Benjamin Harrison TLS 7/21/1892
- He will ÒconferÓ with them, but had no desire to ÒcontrolÓ their discretionBenjamin F. Tracy was Secretary of the Navy throughout the administration of President Harrison. He reformed the Navy, making it into a move offensive force, and also removed the politics from naval appointments. In these things he had the PresidentÕs full support. Julian Hawthorne was a noted author and journalist, and the son of novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. He saw himself as caretaker of his fatherÕs legacy. In 1892, JulianÕs wife apparently sought an appointment for someone within the gift of Navy Secretary Tracy, and when Tracy was not forthcoming, she did not hesitate to go over his head and complain directly to the President.Typed letter signed as President, on Executive Mansion letterhead, Washington, July 21, 1892, to Mrs. Julian Hawthorne. ÒI saw Secretary Tracy yesterday and he tells me you misunderstood him; that he only said he would confer with me about the appointments which the law devolves upon him; and this he did. I said to him that I had no desire to control his discretion, but talked over with him some of the cases that were pending. The matter is with him, and I think the appointments have all been determined upon, so that nothing further can be done just now.ÓAn interesting letter that reveals HarrisonÕs ability to delegate authority, and disinclination to interfere with decisions on patronage appointments made by his cabinet members. PEMBERTON, Capt. E. St. C.
London: Harrison and Sons, 1892. 8vo. 73, [1]pp. Extra-illustrated with a chromolithographed folding map, printed by George Philip & Son. Original wrappers bound in. Contemporary manuscript annotations. Early red morocco by Zaehnsdorf, marbled endpapersProvenance: Capt. E. St. C. Pemberton (inscription on label mounted to upper wrapper)The author's copy of a confidential report on a journey across Central Asia.Beginning Moscow in February 1892, the author, a Captain in the Royal Engineers, travels across present-day Kazakhstan as far as Karakol in Kyrgyzstan, returning through present-day Uzbekistan, across the Caspian Sea and eventually returning to London via Moscow. The primary aims of the 5-month journey would seem to relate to the Russian prison system, as well as the construction of the trans-Siberian railway. However, Pemberton's journal entries give much detail in way of local industry, geography, peoples and international relations. The work was commissioned by the Secretary of State for War, and marked confidential. A printed label on the upper wrapper identifies the present copy as being transmitted to Pemberton himself. Included in the work are a few manuscript annotations, including a note on the Russian calendar and on a meeting with Sir Robert Morier at the British Embassy in Petersburg.Apparently unrecorded, with no extant example cited in OCLC and no copy located at the British Library. The map would appear to be an extra-illustration inserted by Pemberton and dates from around 1895.

1892 - Manuscript Journal Royal Escort Voyage - China & Russia
Kiel [Northern Germany], 1896-1899. Fair copy manuscript account written by Johann Heinrich Hermann Neubauer (born 1874) who was a volunteer in the German Imperial Navy, recounting his numerous voyages and service in vast corners of the globe including China, Japan, Russia, the Phillipines, Brazil and Patagonia, over a period of seven years, looking back to his naval training in April 1892 and leading up to December 1899. Especially captivating are the descriptions of China and South America. With frontis portrait photograph of the writer in navy attire, taken in Nagasaki, and manuscript dedication to adjacent leaf dated 18 December 1896 when he began the work. Text is in German. With tipped-in manuscript message by a Navy Captain on the stationery of the SMS Gefion pertaining to 13 July 1896, and a tipped-in German newspaper printed in Tsingtao 29 March 1899. 8vo. 271 in manuscript. Brown cloth boards, original endpapers. A pleasing naval memoire in a fine hand, centered largely on China. German imperialism is the distinct theme in this manuscript volume, which features naval service during the occupation of Kiautschou Bay, and foremost German colonial influence over Tsingtao as its primary East Asia trading and naval post, while offering detailed observations of the Tsingtao in particular. Up and coming German colonies in Brazil also appear in the journal as the writer served on a vessel sent to quell the Brazilian Naval Revolts (Revoltas da Armada) in Rio de Janeiro in 1893. A voyage was further made to Manila in an effort to secure German colonial possessions in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

A real photo postcard of John and Charles Ruggles, brothers, who were hung in July 1892 by a lynch mob in Redding, California. The brothers robbed the Weaverville Stage, just outside of Redding on May 14, 1892. John Ruggles stole the strong box, killing the stage messenger, Amos Montgomery, in the process, and ran for it, abandoning a wounded Charles Ruggles at the scene. Being wounded, Charles was soon caught and sent to the Shasta County Jail, where his brother joined him in June. On July 24th, 1892 a mob of about forty men stormed the jail, dragging the two brothers to a tree and hanging them. This Real Photo Postcard depicts the gruesome hanging, and on verso has a short handwritten note to "Gary" of the San Mateo Times from "Bill" of Shasta: "Dear Gary-These guys sold a crippled horse to a friend. Having a wonderful time-wish you were here. Bill. P. S. The car is in the garage today." Postcard is in good condition and was at one time folded in half, affecting content; all edges have light wear; moderate soiling on verso. ; 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" .

It prints Macdonald's 366-verse poem on the rectos only, and was produced so that people could sign their names facing the verse representing their birthday. The printed Dedication is a poem by Macdonald explaining this: "Sweet friends, receive my offering. You will find / Against each worded page a white page set: - / This is the mirror of each friendly mind / Reflecting that. In this book we are met. / Make it, dear hearts, of worth to you indeed: - / Let your white page be ground, my print be seed, / Growing to golden ears, that faith and hope shall feed." The author has signed the dedication in this copy, and dated his signature to 1895. This copy derives directly from the Morrell estate by descent. … [Click Below for Full Description]
