[Click Below for Full Description]

Rudaux, Lucien
1892. Rudaux, Lucien (1874-1947). (1) Observations de Mars. Illustrated autograph document signed, in French. 3-1/2pp. on three sheets. Donville, ca. August 1892. (2) Autograph letter signed, in French, most likely to G. Secretan, manufacturer of scientific instruments; includes sheet with drawings of Mars. 4pp. on 3 sheets. Donville, 9 October 1892. "De la part de M. Secretan" inscribed in pencil on the first sheet in another hand. Together 2 items, 6 sheets total. Approx. 300 x 202 mm. Edges a bit frayed, small tears along some folds. Very good. Excellent illustrated manuscript and letter by Lucien Rudaux, one of the founders of modern space art, who was the first to create accurate images of our moon and Mars. The Rudaux crater on Mars, and the Lucien Rudaux Memorial Award honoring masters of space art, are both named for him. He was the author of Sur les autres mondes (1937), a classic work containing over 400 illustrations of our solar system's planets and moons. "Never before had readers seen such an accurate and spectacular depiction of the worlds of the solar system. So accurate were [Rudaux's] paintings that many of them look as though they were done last year instead of more than 70 years ago" (Miller). Rudaux's "Observations de Mars," which he wrote when he was just 18, contains 10 beautifully rendered ink and wash drawings of Mars made between June 10 and August 15, 1892 in Donville, Normandy, using a 95 mm. lunette (small telescope) manufactured by the firm of G. Secretan. Each illustration is accompanied by Rudaux's notes detailing times, weather conditions … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Grundwerk in 16 Bänden sowie die Ergänzungsbände 17 (Ergänzungen und Nachträge, Register), 18 (Erstes Jahres-Supplement 1890 ? 91) und 19 (Zweites Jahres-Supplement 1891 ? 92), somit vollständiges Exemplar in 19 Bänden. Auflage ?
[Click Below for Full Description]

[RUDYARD KIPLING, TRAVEL PHOTOS, JAPAN, EGYPT] Offered here is a group of three VERY interesting travel photos of a man visiting Yokohama, Japan, Kamakura, Japan and Cairo, Egypt. The albumen images are mounted on card stock and are in excellent condition within a custom, annotated mat measuring 10.75 in x 23.5 in. We have no idea who the photographer is for these images. They have no backmarks save for the penciling shown. The first image (from the left) is of a gentleman in a bowler hat sitting in a rickshaw. The rickshaw driver has his attention on the photographer as well. (measures 4.0 in x 5.5 in in mat) The second image (center) is of the same man standing in front of the Daibutsu statue in Kamakura, Japan. The man is standing holding an umbrella and is shown with another man also holding an umbrella who could be a tour guide or translator ?? (measures 7.0 in x 8.0 in in mat) The third image (far right) is of a man in a pith helmet in a light colored suit riding a donkey with two Egyptian men standing close by. (measures 4.5 in x 6.5 in in mat) WE HAVE STRONG, SUBSTANTIVE REASONS TO BELIEVE THE MAN SHOWN IS THE BRITISH AUTHOR, RUDYARD KIPLING. Kipling visited Yokohama Japan about the time these photos were taken (1892) and not only visited both Yokohama, but also visited Kamakura and even wrote a poem about the very statue the man is standing in front of. The poem 'Buddha at Kamakura' was written in 1892 and appeared in different forms in several of his books including 'Kim' (1901) and 'Five Nations' (1903). HENRY JAMES
JAMES, HENRY & ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON. The Wrecker. By Robert Louis Stevenson & Lloyd Osborne. London: Cassell & Company, 1892. First Edition. Signed presentation copy inscribed by author, Henry James to the hospitalized sixteen year old son of his intimate friend, Margaret Brooke, Ranee of Sarawak. Inscribed: "To the brave Adeh from his affectionate friend, Henry James." Skillfully rebacked with the original cloth laid down, a little foxgood. Margaret Brooke is discussed in Leon Edel's James biography and Brooke discusses James in her autobiography. Additionally, Robert Louis Stevenson and James were intimate friends, so it was most natural that James would present one of Stevenson's mystery and adventure novels to a boy. Adeh was Captain Bertram Willes Dayrell Brooke, Tuan Muda of Sarawak (b. 8 August 1876 at Kuching - 15 September 1965, Weybridge, Surrey) was a member of the family of White Rajahs who ruled Sarawak for a hundred years. He was the son of Charles, the second of these rajahs, and brother to Vyner of Sarawak, the third and final ruler of that family. He was sometime heir presumptive to his brother, a claim he relinquished in favour of his son. He held the title of "Tuan Muda" (literally "Little Lord") and the style of His Highness.. Enclosed in a custom cloth clamshell box. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

ENGELS, Friedrich.
Stuttgart: J. H. W. Dietz, 1892. Octavo. Original red cloth, triple black rule border to boards, spine decorated in black, lettered in gilt. Small nick to lower edge of front board, spine ends and corners lightly rubbed; a very good copy. With illustrations in the text and a folding map at the end. Second edition, first published in 1845, and here published as volume 14 of the Internationale Bibliothek. "In 1842, Engels left for England to work in his father's Manchester firm [his father was a textile manufacturer in Westphalia]. Already converted by Moses Hess to a belief in 'communism' and the imminence of an English social revolution, he used his two-year stay to study the conditions which would bring it about. From this visit, came two works which were to make an important contribution to the formation of Marxian socialism: 'Outlines of a Critique of Political Economy' (generally called the 'Umrisse') published in 1844 [in the short-lived Deutsch-Französischen Jahrbüchern] and The Condition of the Working Class in England, published in Leipzig in 1845" (The New Palgrave). Bertini, Francesca
8,5 x 13,5 cm tadelloser Zustand , near mint condition Lebenslange Echtheitsgarantie. Lifetime authenticity guarantee. Very rare!! Francesca Bertini (eigentlich Elena Seracini Vitiello * 11. April, nach anderen Quellen 5. Januar 1892 in Florenz ? 13. [Click Below for Full Description]

YEATS, William Butler]
London T. Fisher Unwin 1892 3rd Edition. London, T. Fisher Unwin, 1892 (third edition)/ [November] 1891 (second edition)/ [September] 1891 [first edition]. Duodecimo, [iv], 195, [1] (colophon) pages. Light tan cloth, ruled and lettered in blue, top edge gilt, others uncut; corners lightly bumped; minimal wear to the head and foot of the spine; endpapers lightly foxed and offset, with a trifling blemish to the rear flyleaf; an excellent copy. These first extended prose works by Yeats were published together as Volume 10 in Unwin's Pseudonym Library. The first edition in cloth has always been rare, but later research suggests that the second and third editions are even rarer. The Yeats scholar Richard Finneran notes in his introduction to the 1991 edition of this work that it is 'rather likely that the accepted figure of 2,000 copies for the first edition (1,644 paper, 356 cloth) may well encompass at least both the first and second "editions" ... It seems virtually certain that ... they were printed simultaneously, the only difference being the cover and title page'. In 1892, Unwin issued a third 'edition'; 'Yeats makes no mention of this "edition" in the extant correspondence, and it is likely to have consisted of a small number of copies.... It is possible the total print run of 2,000 copies includes this edition as well'. Hardcover Very Good [Attributes: First Edition]

Prescott, Arizona: Erwin Baer, 1892. Very Good. Boudoir gelatin silver photograph mounted on a thick card imprinted on the verso with the name of photographer Erwin Baer and a list of ten "Views in Arizona" (this one not listed among them). Image size approximately 8" x 5". Tiny stain in bottom corner of mount with almost no effect on the image, a damp mark on verso, and a few tiny foxed marks on the sky portion of the landscape, very good. Captioned in ink in a contemporary hand on verso: "Whipple Barracks, Arizona in 1892 - Thumb Butte on left." The image taken from an overlook, shows a frontier fort, with several barracks, central buildings, parade grounds, officer's quarters, stables, pasture, and cultivated crops. Presumably a scarce image. OCLC appears not to find anything from the "Views in Arizona" series.

Slave Trade].
London, Harrison and Sons, 1892. 8vo. 2 vols. XIV, 259, (1) pp. (4), 205, (1) pp. Contemporary black half calf with giltstamped spine. First edition of this rare manual for British naval officers, reprinting in full the texts of all the treaties signed between the Gulf Sheikhdoms and the United Kingdom between 1820 and 1847. - The first agreement is the General Treaty with the Friendly Arabs, signed at Ra¬ís al-Khaymah in 1820 (pp. 144-146). Arab signatories include "Sheikh Shakbool", that is Tahnun b. Shakhbut, Sheikh of the Bani Yas and ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1818 to 1833, "Sultan bin Sugger", or Sultan bin Saqr al-Qasimi, ruler of Sharjah, and the "Sheikh of Dubey", who in later agreements is named explicitly as Maktum b. Bati, who announced the independence of Dubai from Abu Dhabi in 1833 and founded the Maktoum dynasty. The treaty binds the Arab sheikhdoms to aid the British against piracy in the Gulf, illustrating that the British, despite their naval supremacy, found their interests genuinely threatened by the activities of Arab sailors in the region. A further set of agreements, signed in 1838, with the chief of Abu Dhabi, now known as "Khaleefa ben Shakbool", gives the British the right to detain and search any ships entering their ports which are suspected of carrying slaves. The final set of treaties, agreed with the various Gulf sheikhs over the course of 1847, including the chief of Bahrain, Muhammad b. Khalifah b. Subman, gives licence to British cruisers to seize any ships suspected of involvement in the slave trade. These "Instructions" were published in lig … [Click Below for Full Description]
