MORRIS, William & RUSKIN, John.
William Morris: Kelmscott Press. 1892 Elaborate woodcut boarder on opening page, woodcut initials throughout text, two woodcut Kelmscott devices. Uncut in orig. stiff vellum, spine lettered in gilt, green silk ties, yapp edges; vellum v. sl. darkened, ties faded. Ink inscription on leading f.e.p. 'To Dr. Sunderland, in memory of a great kindness'. v.g.One of 500 copies; printed in Golden type. William Morris, 1834-1896, social activist, poet, novelist, textile designer and one of the most important figures of the Arts and Crafts Movement. He was heavily influenced by the writings of John Ruskin, and especially his notion of rejecting industrial manufacturing and championing a return to hand-craftsmanship: the artisan as artist. This concept was what inspired Morris to found the Kelmscott Press at his house in Hammersmith in 1891. 'On the Nature of the Gothic' from Ruskin's The Stones of Venice was particularly important to Morris and in his Preface to this volume he calls it 'one of the very few necessary and inevitable utterances of the century'. He continues that 'the lesson which Ruskin here teaches us is that art is the expression of man's pleasure in labour; that it is possible for man to rejoice in his work'. Morris's joy in his work is clear on every page of a Kelmscott book: it is a beautiful object.

GALTON, Francis
London: Macmillan and Co., 1892, 1893, 1895. London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1892, 1893, 1895. 3 volumes, octavo. Original dark red cloth, titles to spines gilt, green and black coated endpapers. 41 plates in the set (16 to vols one and two, 9 to vol. three). Bookplates of the "Oliver Collection" to all three pastedowns. Spines somewhat sunned, otherwise an excellent set. First editions of Galton's three publications on fingerprints, this a very scarce presentation set with the first work inscribed by Galton to his brother, "Erasmus Galton, from F.G.", on the half-title, the second work with Erasmus's ownership inscription "E. Galton, Oct 9 1893" to verso of front free endpaper. Erasmus (1815-1909) was presumably named after their maternal grandfather Erasmus Darwin. Though not the first to propose the use of fingerprints for identification, Galton was among the first to explain their possibilities in the identification of criminals. "Galton gathered together all the earlier studies and recorded other experiments, illustrated from photographs and drawings. The outcome of this was the appointment in 1899 of a Royal Commission which came out in favour of the adoption of the system by the British police forces" (PMM 376). Inscribed copies of this key publication are very scarce indeed.

BARBUSSE Henri
1892. Fine. [Circa 1892], 10,2x23,8cm, en feuilles. - An autograph poem ""Frisson du réel"" and a fragment of signed autograph poem, 36 lines in total on two sheets of different sizes. A photographic portrait, albumen paper, is attached. These two poems of youth are part of the collection of poems ""Pleureuses"", published in 1895 to the editions Charpentier and Fasquelle. [Click Below for Full Description]

Herman Melville's "Moby Dick or the White Whale". Very early printing from 1892 published by the United States Book Company, New York. The true first edition was published by Harper and Brothers in 1851. The book measures 4.5" x 7.25", 545 pages including Extracts. Ex-library. Re-cased in half cloth binding over marbled boards. Gold and black leather labels to the spine with raised bands and gold tooling. New endsheets. This book had previously been a library book with a library binding. Previous repairs had been made with tape, especially to the first few pages of text. There was some amateur sewing to the textblock, with the first and last few pages of text reattached crookedly. Library stamps and notations. A professional bookbinder was able to mend some of the tears to the textblock but was unable to remove the tape repairs as they would ruin the integrity of the pages. Moisture stains and soiling to the textblock with some small tears. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. KROPOTKINE, PIERRE (PETER KROOPOTKIN). - [FOUNDING MODERN ANARCHISM]
Paris, Tresse & Stock, 1892. 8vo. Contemporary red half calf with lovely gilt ornamentation to spine and gilt library-lettering to bottom of spine. Spine slightly soiled. Binder's stamp to front free end-paper. Evenly browned throughout. Title-page closely shaven at outer margin, but not affecting print. XV, (1), 297, (1) pp. + (1, contents) f. ¶ The very rare first edition of Kropotkin's main work, "The Conquest of Bread", the great constructivist work of the libertarian tradition and the greatest modern work of anarchism. By 1880, Kropotkin had broken with the Bakunist idea of remuneration for labour in the post-revolutionary society. While Bakunin and the Federalist wing of the First International suggested a period of economic transition between Capitalism and Libertarian Communism, Kropotkin believed it necessary to leap from one to the other, from day one of the revolution. Any retention of the wages system in whatever form, such as labour cheques or time coupons, would only result in further exploitation and injustice. The revolution has to consist in the belief that all things are the common inheritance of humanity and should also be held in common; therefore, Kropotkin states in his magnum opus, collectivists merely tinker with the wages system in stead of destroying it, and the only way forward is to get rid of it completely. Kroptkin's groundbreaking "The Conquest of Bread" constitutes a work of anarcho-communist economics and history rather than a mere text book on revolutionary organization. "[I]n "The Conquest of Bread", [h]e doesn't seem to see anarchism as a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Erste Ausgabe dieses extrem seltenen und bahnbrechenden Werkes, oft zitiert, aber selten gelesen! Mit eigenhändiger Widmung auf Titel "Herrn Kollegen Blatt zur frdl. Erinnerung an gemeinsames medizinisches Arbeiten. Dr. R. Wolff". His experience led to him establishing the patterns of an individual's fingerprints do not alter with age, allowing them to be used for personal identification. To which end Galton developed a taxonomic system by which these patterns could be described and catalogued. TOLSTOI, Lev Nikolaievich)
Scherer, Nabholz & Co. [1892]. Black and white landscape photograph, image 22 x 16cm within grey card mount, 34 x 25cm; at some point removed from a frame. This is a very important and well-preserved original photograph, given by Tolstoi's wife Countess Sophia Tolstaia, and signed by members of the Tolstoi family including Lev Nikolaievich. It shows the author and his wife, along with seven of their children, gathered round a table in their garden at Yasnaia Poliana, the family's home near Tula. Tolstoi, seated to the left of the group side-on to the camera, is typically attired in a white smock and with a long greying beard. Sophia, sitting opposite him, is in a long polka dot dress. The scene is at once relaxed and formal. The table is set for tea, with a large samovar at the centre; there is a white tablecloth, white crockery, and a vase of flowers. The older members of the family fix the camera with a steady gaze, while the children are mostly smiling. All nine family members have been identified; Running left to right, the subjects are 'Michail, Leo [i.e. Lev Nickolaievich], Ivan, Lev [Tolstoi's second son], Alexandra, Andrew [Andrei], Tatiana, Sophia, Maria'. A neat contemporary manuscript note beneath the image states, 'Count Tolstoi and his family. Given to me by Countess Tolstoi in 1893 - at Moscow. The names pencilled in by Tatiana'. Despite this statement, it is clear that the names are written in separate hands and it would appear likely (perhaps with the exception of young Ivan) that the names have been added by the subjects themselves; indeed the signature 'Le … [Click Below for Full Description]

THE SOUTH PARIS WHEEL CLUB IN OXFORD COUNTY, MAINE
South Paris, Maine: South Paris Wheel Club, 1892., 1892. First edition. First edition. Twenty three glass plate negatives measuring 4" x 5" each. Although the bicycle had been around for several decades by the 1890's, technological innovations in the late nineteenth century that made bikes lighter, faster, and easier to ride led to a new burst of enthusiasm for cycling among the American public. People of all ages and social classes purchased bicycles and took to the streets and country lanes, sparking a movement to improve the quality of roads. Monthly magazines began publishing long articles about bicycle tours, newspapers added regular columns on the sport and filled their pages with ads for bicycles and accessories, doctors discussed the health risks and benefits, women’s skirts got shorter to facilitate riding (much to the dismay of some), and hundreds of new cycling clubs organized races and outings. One such club was the South Paris Wheel Club in Oxford County, Maine.
