Francis Rabelais
Chiswick Press, London: Lawrence and Bullen. See pictures. Although still handsome, the bindings have been loved and needed restorative work. For two of the boards, strong Japan paper straps were extended from the spine and into the boards (between the lowest pasteboard layers), then an upper joint of Japanese paper was applied and color matched between the boards and spine. For the other two boards, some small strips of Japanese paper were applied at the joint (and also color-matched) to help strengthen them. The joints/hinges are working well now. The board edges are worn. The spine edges and raised cords have some chipping. The endpaper hinges were not repaired to retain originality. Books should be cradled when opening (V-shape). The turn-ins have ghosted onto the nearest pages. Some toning near page edges. Occasional thumbing (thumb wear at right bottom margin). The endpapers have occasional binder notes.Despite wear of time and use, still very handsome and attractive books. A pleasure to have on the shelf. The Works of Master Francis Rabelais, well-illustrated by Chalon, in signed fine-binding, on Japanese Vellum paper, and limited to only 210 copies, with two illustrations specific only to this "Vellum" edition. About the Work - François Rabelais (? - 9 April 1553) was a French Renaissance writer, physician, Renaissance humanist, monk and Greek scholar. He has historically been regarded as a writer of fantasy, satire, the grotesque, bawdy jokes and songs. His best known work is Gargantua and Pantagruel. Addison, Joseph; Steele, Sir Richard]; Thomson, Hugh [Illustrator]
Macmillan and Co., London, 1892. A Near Fine copy of the third edition of this popular work with the front board and spine lettered in gilt and all edges of the closed page block in gilt as well (some darkening to the spine, some wear with slight loss to the spine ends, tiny rubs to the leading corners, minor bump to the front board's lower leading corner, a bit of bubbling to the rear board, small English bookseller's ticket to the front pastedown's lower right corner), in a Very Good or better example of the scarce dust jacket (some light wear, slight toning, and come vertical fold lines due to the jacket's having been placed inside -- and thus well protected by, the book); the illustrations are by Hugh Thomson. Joseph Addison and Sir Richard Steele (who authored the book but are not named therein as its authors) together founded The Spectator, a popular magazine, from which this work was reprinted. A famed illustrator, early in his career Hugh Thomson worked for The English Magazine with Randolph Caldecott. At the time, Thomson's style was said to be in the "straight tradition of Caldecott". He won praise for his work and also illustrated illustrated editions of William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. His work also was featured in a number of exhibitions during his lifetime, including an 1891 exhibit with fellow illustrator Kate Greenaway at the Fine Art Society. Copies in the dust jacket are, in our experience, quite difficult to find. QUITE SCARCE INDEED. [Attributes: Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Very rare very early pop-up in fine condition. Exceptional! Our Friends at the Zoo The Combined Expanding Toy and Painting Book Series. No. 609 Publisher: Raphael Tuck & Sons in London, but printed in Germany 6 pages with some illustrations in colour. 14.5 cm by 18 cm. A "Movable Book," no date but about 1892. This early moveable book is very rare and more do especially in this condition. Inside front cover at the bottom is a neat 1895 handwritten inscription. Please see my photo. The zoo was a favorite place to visit in the Victorian period and many books were published with "the zoo" as a subject. As I found in an article about this little book, Raphael Tuck produced "Our Friends at the Zoo" around the turn of the century. Haining (Movable Books) describes it as an inexpensive souvenir probably sold at the London Zoo and later editions in Europe and America. He states that it enjoyed considerable success. This is a small book ( 7" X 5-1/2") with 16 pages contains 6 brightly colored "sliding" pictures. The original important directions for pushing the pictures so they easily lift into 3-dimensionsl scenes are still pasted on the inside of the front cover. I have shown this in one photo. The story of the visit to the zoo is told by Kitty, one of the children, on 10 pages with sepia writing and drawings on each page. It begins (1) with children entering the gate A Visit to the Zoo, (2) next appears a Polar Bear and a Leopard in cages. The following double scene (3) includes a lively group of monkeys in a large cage with happy children watching. Next (4) are two cages housing … [Click Below for Full Description]

MALLARME Stéphane
Librairie de l'art indépendant. First edition of which there were only printes 50 copies, this one of 5 numbered copies on Japon imperial, the tirage de tete.Autograph inscription by Stephane Mallarme to his friend Francois Nys : "A monsieur Nys tres sympathiquement."This copy enriched in forntispiece with a portrait woddcut in red of Villiers de l'Isle-Adam by Marcellin Desboutin, which he inscribed for Francois Nys. This portrait, present in the second edition of 1892, is not present in every copy of the tirage de tete. Two very clear dampstains, not serious, in the margins of the first and final free endpapers, two small marginal dampstains to the covers.A good and rare copy. [Click Below for Full Description]

Ford (Ford Madox, Ford Madox Hueffer).
T. Fisher Unwin, (The Children’s Library Volume One), 1892. Frontispiece and plate by Ford Madox Brown Small 8vo Spine faded and somewhat rubbed, especially at head and foot, upper cover slightly marked and upper hinge partly cracked, but a nice copy; traces of bookseller’s small label on front pastedown. Presentation Copy, inscribed by the author on the verso of the frontispiece "Sincere regards from Ford H.M. Hueffer" This edition not in Harvey From the hand and style it is clear that this inscription is contemporary with publication and as such is exceedingly scarce. It seems likely that the legend "Second Edition" at the foot of the title-page was added in the press to first edition sheets. The author’s first book, being a fairy story which developed from tales told to his younger sister, Juliet, published through the efforts of his grandfather, Ford Madox Brown. Original white cloth with blue floral pattern repeated on end-papers and all edges (as the first edition) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
