The Journal of Indian Art, Vol. 4, Nos. 33-37

London: W. Griggs, 1892. Hardbound. Contents are VG or better, front inner hinge and gutter weak. Bottom 3 inches of spine cloth attached only at back hinge. Edges of 6 leaves chipped with small pieces of margin area missing. There is light off-setting from each colored plate onto the facing page (usually a blank page, so no text is marred). The volume is ex-library from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with a stamp on the title page, a sticker on the back free end paper, and the remnant of a pocket inside the back cover. In addition, each color plate is library-stamped on the reverse. A personal bookplate of William Sturgis Bigelow, Boston surgeon and collector of Asian (especially Japanese) art. He donated his entire collection of 25,000 works of art to the MFA. The contents are bound consecutively but without original covers, as various "chapters" of a book. The original paper covers are bound together, in order, at the back of the volume.. Green gilt embossed publisher's cloth. Unpaginated, and filled with breathtaking colored chromolithographs and other two-tone plates and images (1 folding bw plate, 1 folding color plate, 2 double-page color plates, and 28 single color plates). A bit heavy at 6 pounds and will require extra postage. Scholarly literature on the decorative arts in India is scanty and mainly in learned journals. The Journal of Indian Art and Industries (1886-1916) is the most important and contains numerous pioneering studies. Original front and rear wraps from each issue are bound in at the rear. These covers have the contents of each issue printed on them. This is the exceedingly rare third volume of this seminal and Influential periodical on Indian arts. See article by Peter H. Hoffenberg entitled "John Lockwood Kipling, W. H. Griggs and The Journal of Indian Art and Industry" written in 2003 for a complete description of this periodical. He states: "...Kipling's and Buck's vision encouraged use of the latest photographic and reproductive innovations to ensure accurate and attractive illustrations of lasting quality. Griggs and his editorial staff took advantage of that encouragement and of the most current technology to produce exquisite color chromo- and photo-lithographs bound in leather. Black and white illustrations were also included...No doubt the publisher applied chromo-lithographic technologies from Britain and the continent, but the pages of the Journal also included illustrations resulting from innovative work in the heliogravure and collotype sections of India's own Revenue and Agriculture Department, particularly the offices devoted to the Survey of India. " The first 4 or 5 volumes of this publication seem exceedingly scarce.

The Ancient Art Stoneware of the Low Countries and Germany, or "Grès de Flandres" & "Steinzeug", Vols. I & II Complete

London, England: Privately Printed, 1892. "Its Principal Varieties, and the Places where it was Manufactured during the XVIth and XVIIth Centuries." Signed by the author in a neat ink hand on the colophon page. Copy no. 89 of a limited edition of 270 copies on Dutch handmade paper. An additional XXX copies were issued on Japan paper. Privately printed by the Chiswick Press in collaboration with C. Whittingham and Co. With copperplate etchings produced by T. Brooker & Co., London, apparently using the chine-collé process, to allow the printmaker to pull finer details off the plate and to provide a background color behind the image that is different from the surrounding backing sheet. First and presumed only printing of this book. Principal text in English. 15.5 x 11.5 inches. Original paper wrappers and European-style over-wrappers, as issued, not a later rebinding. With title page reproduced on the front of the over-wrappers. The over-wrappers are somewhat age-darkened, especially along the spines, and there is some splattering to the front over-wrapper of Vol. l. Text blocks with generally unbumped spine heads and tails, and bindings with moderately bumped corners. Off-setting to the front and rear FEPs from the over-wrappers. With gently deckled fore and bottom page edges to a handsome effect. With 208 and 183 umbered pages. Illustrated with 15 copperplate etchings and with 210 B&W illustrations in text. All etchings and illustrations are by the author. Also with charming headbands and decorated initials. A few of the etchings with tiny, light spots to the outer margins, quite minor. Several text pages with light spotting or off-setting. Else the book is impressively clean. With many pages unopened, hence largely unread. A Very Good copy in Very Good Minus over-wrappers. Very scarce in any condition. A valuable reference work for collectors and dealers of ceramics and stoneware from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Extensive commentary, information, and examples are given for each geographic region discussed. Marc-Louis Solon [1835-1913] was a French-born pottery artist and expert.. Signed by Author.         "Sol Fa Si La Si Ré Polka" - Autograph Musical Manuscript from his First Performance with a Professional Orchestra

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An historic autograph musical manuscript of a very early short piece for orchestra in the hand of the great conductor known for conducting the premiere of the Rite of Spring and for his tenures with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, and the San Francisco Symphony. A light-hearted polka named after the notes of its primary theme, which when spoken together quickly form the phrase "Sol facile à cirer" -- "Floor easy to polish" -- the work was composed for piano in 1892, when Monteux was only sixteen and studying at the Paris Conservatory. When invited to conduct a piece at a charity event, he then orchestrated the polka. At this event, according to biographer John Canarina, "Standing for the first time in front of a professional orchestra, directing his own composition, he then and there determined to become a conductor, an ambition, that, according to Monteux, he had harbored since the age of twelve." Although Monteux continued to compose and play the viola as a teenager, it was at this point that his attention turned to conducting, his great calling and passion -- making this work an important marker of this turning point.<br style="">Scored for flute, oboe, two clarinets, English horn, bassoon, two cornets, three trombones, percussion, and strings, the polka is 92 measures long, over 10 pp. of manuscript in 10-bar systems. Dedicated on the cover to "mon ami Henri Hamburg." In pen and pencil, with page numbers and the title, inscription, and signature on the cover page in blue colored pencil, on 18-stave manuscript paper embossed at the upper left with the seal of Lard-Esnault, Paris. Overall toning, some light former water damage to the lower edge, and light wear and soiling to the cover and edges; overall in very good condition. 14 x 10.5 inches (35.3 x 27 cm). From the estate of Monteux's daughter, Nancie Monteux Barendse.

        Handwritten Diary covering July 23-December 31, 1892

1892. Hardcover. Good. Rush's daily diary entries cover the first 149 pages (our count), following by 35 blank pages. Rush has written a poem (copied?) and a list of hotels on the final 3 pages. The diary is written in a small (9 x 15cm.) somewhat worn black notebook which a stationer's ticket suggests that she bought in Munich. Rush, the unmarried daughter of Jeremiah McLain Rusk, who served as Governor of Wisconsin (1882-1889) and then as Benjamin Harrison's Secretary of Agriculture (1889-1893), writes in a rather neat and mostly clear hand which would probably become more clear with study. Mary is described, in an undated (1919) obituary for her mother which is laid in, as "dutiful daughter and companion to her mother during the years of her widowhood." The first portion of this diary is Rush's account of the latter portion of a European trip with someone referred to as Annie. It begins in Lucerne and wanders through Switzerland, Paris and London before they embark for home on August 31st aboard the "City of New York." After a few days in New York she returns to her life in Washington with her parents. She visits the White House several times during the illness of Mrs. Harrison, attends her funeral and endures Cleveland's election in November. She heads for Florida in December and spends a week in Kissimmee with stops in Tampa and Jacksonville on the way back to Washington. Her last entry ends: "I can't help but wish that another year will bring me what I so much wish for -- contentment. I sometimes feel that my life is so empty and I can't help thinking it is in a measure my own fault. Farewell forever 1892."

        Oriental scene. No place, 1892.

1892. Watercolour on paper, 290 x 460 mm, matted (600 x 398 mm). Beautiful orientalist watercolor, inscribed by the artist "à Monsieur Coullon, souvenir affectueux". Lacoste, a genre painter equally adept at landscapes and architecture, was a student of Rouillet, Cambon, and Cogniet. He exhibited at the Salon from 1839 to 1907, also drawing costumes for the various Parisian scenes, including for the Opéra from 1876 to 1885. His series of watercolours painted for Verdi's "Aida" in 1880 is remarkable; a design for "Ramses" is now kept at the Getty Museum. The present orientalist scene is typical of its age but distinguished by its large format and masterly quality. It shows a Middle Eastern oasis with Moorish-type buildings near a palm grove reflected in a waterhole, surrounded by eight characters in local costumes going about their lives: a man is perched on his camel; two men are wearing red hats; two women, possibly slaves, carry jugs on their heads. In the foreground, cargo unloaded from a camel suggests a Bedouin desert stopover. - Slight foxing and waterstaining to matte, not concerning the painting.
