"Sol Fa Si La Si Ré Polka" - Autograph Musical Manuscript from his First Performance with a Professional Orchestra

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An historic autograph musical manuscript of a very early short piece for orchestra in the hand of the great conductor known for conducting the premiere of the Rite of Spring and for his tenures with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, and the San Francisco Symphony. A light-hearted polka named after the notes of its primary theme, which when spoken together quickly form the phrase "Sol facile à cirer" -- "Floor easy to polish" -- the work was composed for piano in 1892, when Monteux was only sixteen and studying at the Paris Conservatory. When invited to conduct a piece at a charity event, he then orchestrated the polka. At this event, according to biographer John Canarina, "Standing for the first time in front of a professional orchestra, directing his own composition, he then and there determined to become a conductor, an ambition, that, according to Monteux, he had harbored since the age of twelve." Although Monteux continued to compose and play the viola as a teenager, it was at this point that his attention turned to conducting, his great calling and passion -- making this work an important marker of this turning point.<br style="">Scored for flute, oboe, two clarinets, English horn, bassoon, two cornets, three trombones, percussion, and strings, the polka is 92 measures long, over 10 pp. of manuscript in 10-bar systems. Dedicated on the cover to "mon ami Henri Hamburg." In pen and pencil, with page numbers and the title, inscription, and signature on the cover page in blue colored pencil, on 18-stave manuscript paper embossed at the upper left with the seal of Lard-Esnault, Paris. Overall toning, some light former water damage to the lower edge, and light wear and soiling to the cover and edges; overall in very good condition. 14 x 10.5 inches (35.3 x 27 cm). From the estate of Monteux's daughter, Nancie Monteux Barendse.

        Handwritten Diary covering July 23-December 31, 1892

1892. Hardcover. Good. Rush's daily diary entries cover the first 149 pages (our count), following by 35 blank pages. Rush has written a poem (copied?) and a list of hotels on the final 3 pages. The diary is written in a small (9 x 15cm.) somewhat worn black notebook which a stationer's ticket suggests that she bought in Munich. Rush, the unmarried daughter of Jeremiah McLain Rusk, who served as Governor of Wisconsin (1882-1889) and then as Benjamin Harrison's Secretary of Agriculture (1889-1893), writes in a rather neat and mostly clear hand which would probably become more clear with study. Mary is described, in an undated (1919) obituary for her mother which is laid in, as "dutiful daughter and companion to her mother during the years of her widowhood." The first portion of this diary is Rush's account of the latter portion of a European trip with someone referred to as Annie. It begins in Lucerne and wanders through Switzerland, Paris and London before they embark for home on August 31st aboard the "City of New York." After a few days in New York she returns to her life in Washington with her parents. She visits the White House several times during the illness of Mrs. Harrison, attends her funeral and endures Cleveland's election in November. She heads for Florida in December and spends a week in Kissimmee with stops in Tampa and Jacksonville on the way back to Washington. Her last entry ends: "I can't help but wish that another year will bring me what I so much wish for -- contentment. I sometimes feel that my life is so empty and I can't help thinking it is in a measure my own fault. Farewell forever 1892."

        Oriental scene. No place, 1892.

1892. Watercolour on paper, 290 x 460 mm, matted (600 x 398 mm). Beautiful orientalist watercolor, inscribed by the artist "à Monsieur Coullon, souvenir affectueux". Lacoste, a genre painter equally adept at landscapes and architecture, was a student of Rouillet, Cambon, and Cogniet. He exhibited at the Salon from 1839 to 1907, also drawing costumes for the various Parisian scenes, including for the Opéra from 1876 to 1885. His series of watercolours painted for Verdi's "Aida" in 1880 is remarkable; a design for "Ramses" is now kept at the Getty Museum. The present orientalist scene is typical of its age but distinguished by its large format and masterly quality. It shows a Middle Eastern oasis with Moorish-type buildings near a palm grove reflected in a waterhole, surrounded by eight characters in local costumes going about their lives: a man is perched on his camel; two men are wearing red hats; two women, possibly slaves, carry jugs on their heads. In the foreground, cargo unloaded from a camel suggests a Bedouin desert stopover. - Slight foxing and waterstaining to matte, not concerning the painting.

The book of common prayer and administration of the sacraments and other rites and ceremonies of the Church according to the use of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America together with the psalter or psalms of David.

When the Book of Common Prayer was revised in 1892, a first edition of five impressions (including the "standard edition") was immediately printed by the De Vinne Press. These differed in material and decoration, and this fourth, in folio, on paper, and with Art Nouveau borders designed by Daniel Updike and Bertram Goodhue, was sumptuous. Produced in 525 copies only, for subscribers and for presentation to designated libraries, its glory was exceeded only by that of the one-copy impression done from its same setting but entirely on vellum for the General Convention itself. The floral borders Updike produced for these pages vary with the season, feast, or service of the Church. For example, Ash Wednesday has a border of hyssop and Easter a border of lilies. The borders vary in richness according to the dignity of the feast or service being celebrated, and many of the borders incorporate scrolls inscribed with Latin quotations from Benedicite Omnia Opera Domini Domino, with a few from elsewhere in the the Prayer Book or the Bible.Provenance: There is a gift inscription on the front pastedown: "To the Rev. Hugh G.E. Crosby from the Warwick family with gratitude."Binding: Publisher's vellum over bevelled boards, front cover and spine ornately gilt-stamped and with heavy brass clasps. Gilt-stamped endpapers. The binding and endpapers are in a neo-gothic design by Bertram Goodhue and incorporate the first verse of the Benedicite, as well as employing rose and thistle badges and a rose pattern to denote the English and Scottish origins of the American Episcopal Church. Upper edge gilt, tail and fore-edge deckled.Affixed to one of the rear fly-leaves is: Updike, Daniel Berkeley. On the decorations of the limited edition of the standard prayer book of MDCCCXCII. New York: Pr. at the De Vinne Press, 1893. 4to (25.5 cm, 10"). [2] ff.

      - Paris, Masson 1892, 8°, XI, (1), 239, (1) pp., 3 farblith. Tafeln, feiner Halbledereinband; St.a.Tit. First and the original edition of Elie Metchnikoff's classic lectures on the pathology of inflammation! - - Russian zoologist and microbiologist Elic Metchnikoff (1845-1916) received (with Paul Ehrlich) the 1908 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discovery in animals of amoeba-like cells that engulf foreign bodies such as bacteria-a phenomenon known as phagocytosis and a fundamental part of the immune response. - In Messina, Italy (1882-86), while studying the origin of digestive organs in bipinnaria starfish larvae, he observed that certain cells unconnected with digestion surrounded and engulfed carmine dye particles and splinters that he had introduced into the bodies of the larvae. He called these cells phagocytes (from Greek words meaning "devouring cells") and named the process phagocytosis. - Working at the Bacteriological Institute, Odessa (1886-87), and at the Pasteur Institute, Paris (1888-1916), Metchnikoff contributed to many important discoveries about the immune response. Perhaps his most notable achievement was his recognition that the phagocyte is the first line of defense against acute infection in most animals, including humans, whose phagocytes are one type of leukocyte, or white blood cell. This work formed the basis of Metchnikoff's cellular (phagocytic) theory of immunity (1892), a hypothesis that engendered much opposition, particularly from scientists who claimed that only body fluids and soluble substances in the blood (antibodies) -and nor cells - destroyed invading microorganisms (the humoral theory of immunity). Although the humoral theory held sway for the next 50 years, in the 1940s scientists began to reexamine the role cells play in fighting off infections. Eventually Metchnikoff's theory of cellular immunity was vindicated when aspects of both schools of thought became integrated in the modern understanding of immunity." Kara Rogers (Ed.), The Cell (2011), pp.51-53 - - "Inflammation was once regarded as a harmful or disease process, not a normal protective response. The associated heat, pain, and discomfort might cause an affected person to agree. However, Elie Metchnikoff placed the process in its correct biological position by a careful series of phylogenic studies establishing its origin and evolutionary development. Immunity and inflammation came together or, from the reverse perspective, originated with the mesodermal phagocyte. However immune mechanisms may vary among orders and phyla, the phagocyte is the common denominator. Indeed, aside from the controversial and limited antitoxins, these cells were the only general immune mechanism known when Metchnikoff presented his lectures summarizing the research from his and other laboratories. Through its positive and negative chemotaxis and its digestive granules, be it of sponge, frog, or rodent, the phagocyte was described as an active destroyer of living invaders, all obeying the evolutional laws of variation and natural selection. All other subsequently developed inflammatory activities of tissues were quasiindependent adjuncts. - Metchnikoff returned from the August 1890 meeting of the International Congress of Medicine in Berlin unshaken by the reports on specific bactericidal serum. The challenge of the December 1890 reports on serum antitoxins, however, needed a reply. (He first discounted their significance in vivo, since tetanus and diphtheria do not produce serous exudates.) To solidify his position and educate others in his zoological approach, Metchnikoff published his well-received lectures as a book, . - - In his last lecture Metchnikoff completed his survey by considering immunity in humans. Seeing the concomitant and united evolution of all biological components of the organism, and with bold, sure mental brush strokes as in Zen calligraphy and painting, Metchnikoff merged immunity, neurons, and .
