BORN IN EXILE

      1892. [the handsome Ulizio set] A Novel. In Three Volumes. London and Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1892. 2 pp Vol III undated ads. Original brownish-mauve cloth. First Edition, which consisted of only 500 copies.~BORN IN EXILE... is one of Gissing's most sustained pieces of fictional autobiography and among his most fascinating performances.... It brings together in closest proximity the themes of class, money, and women so central to all his work; and the exile motif is nowhere else so ubiquitous. [Halperin]~Gissing submitted BORN IN EXILE (then called GODWIN PEAK, for the protagonist) to Smith Elder, and, since he felt NEW GRUB STREET had been such a success, "stated" his price of 250 pounds; Smith Elder denied that NEW GRUB STREET had been a success and got him to lower his price to 150 pounds, but even then told him his books would not sell unless he made them less pessimistic. It was at this point that Gissing contacted the literary agent A.P. Watt, who, after having no luck with Chatto & Windus, with Longmans, nor with Bentley, managed to place the novel with the Scottish firm of A. & C. Black -- for 150 pounds less Watt's 10%. The book sold only moderately well as a three-decker, but did better in subsequent one-volume "cheap" editions.~This is a handsome, near-fine set, with minor rubbing at the extremities (a little more at the foot of Vol I's spine than elsewhere). Atypically, the front covers are clean and unmarred -- indicating that this set managed to escape the clutches of the lending libraries, which bought most three-deckers and promptly defaced them with labels. Except for minor cracking of one endpaper, the original black-coated endpapers are present and intact.~In terms of Gissing scarcity, Sadleir (who did not have a copy) considered this title third behind THE UNCLASSED and ISABEL CLARENDON (of which he did have a copy of each). Coustillas A11.1; Collie A11a; Spiers & Coustillas N1; not in Sadleir but see p. 378; Wolff 2542. Provenance: each front paste-down bears the bookplate of renowned bibliophile B. George Ulizio (1889-1969) of Pine Valley NJ, whose initial library was sold at Anderson Galleries in 1931 and whose subsequent collection of 1500+ titles went to Kent State University.

Tony Aubin, Jean Cartan, Georges Hugon, Georges Favre und Olivier Messiaen.

This is an unusually beautiful set in Fine condition. Three minor stains to rear dustjacket of volume I. Konstantin Georgiyevich Paustovsky (31 May [O.S. 19 May] 1892 July 14, 1968) was a Russian Soviet writer nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature in 1965. Paustovsky began writing while still in Gymnasium. His first works were imitative poetry. He eventually limited his writing to prose, after Ivan Bunin who wrote in a letter, "I think that your sphere, your real poetry, is prose. It is here, if you are determined enough, that I am sure you can achieve something significant." His first stories to be published were Na vode (On The Water) and Chetvero (The Four) in 1911 and 1912. During World War I, Paustovsky wrote some sketches of life at the front, and one of them was also published. His first book, Morskiye Nabroski (Sea Sketches), was published in 1925, but was little noticed. It was followed by Minetoza in 1927, and the romantic novel Blistaiushie Oblaka (Shining Clouds) in 1929. His work of this period was influenced by Alexander Grin as well as the writers of the "Odessa school", (Isaac Babel, Valentin Kataev, and Yuri Olesha). In the 1930s Paustovsky visited various constructions sites and wrote in praise of the industrial transformation of the country. To that period belong the novels Kara-Bugaz (1932) and Kolkhida (1934). Kara-Bugaz won particular praise. It is essentially a tale of adventure and exploration in the region around Kara-Bugaz Bay, where the air is mysteriously heavy. It begins in 1847 and moves to the Russian Civil War period when a group of Red Guards is abandoned to near-certain death on a desolate island. There are, however, survivors, who are rescued by an explorer. Some of the survivors stay on to help in the exploration, development and study of the natural wealth of the region. Paustovsky continued to explore historical themes in Severnaya Povest ("Tale of the North", 1938). In this tale, after the anti-Tsarist Decembrist uprising in Saint Petersburg, a wounded officer who took part in the uprising and a sailor try to make it by foot across the ice to Sweden. They are captured in a sequence of dramatic events. Years later, in Leningrad of the 1930s, the great-grandsons of the participants in the events unexpectedly meet. In the late 1930s, Russian nature emerged as a central theme for Paustovsky, for example, in Letniye Dni ("Summer Days", 1937) and Meshcherskaya Storona (1939). For Paustovsky, nature was a many-faceted splendor in which man can free himself from daily cares and regain his spiritual equilibrium. This focus on nature drew comparisons with Mikhail Prishvin. Prishvin himself wrote in his diary, "If I were not Prishvin, I would like to write like Paustovsky." During World War II Paustovsky served as a war correspondent on the southern front. In 1943 Paustovsky produced a screenplay for the Gorky Film Studio production of "Lermontov", directed by A. Gendelshtein. Another work of note is Tale of the Woods (1948). This story opens in a remote forest in the 1890s, where Tchaikovsky is composing a symphony. The young daughter of the local forester often brings Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky berries. Half a century later, the daughter of this girl is a laboratory technician at the local forest station. From 1948 until 1955 Paustovsky taught at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute. Paustovsky also edited a few literary collections, Literary Moscow (1956) and Pages from Tarusa, in which he tried to bring new writers to the public's attention and to publish writers suppressed during the Joseph Stalin years. Other major works include Snow, Crossing Ships (1928) The Black Sea (1936) and The Rainy Dawn (1946). Paustovsky was also the author of several plays and fairy tales, including "Steel Ring". Perhaps Paustovskys most famous work is his autobiography Povest o Zhizni (Story of a Life). It is not a strictly historical document but rather a long, lyrical tale focusing on the internal perceptions and poetic development of the writer . It has been called a "biography of the soul" rather than a biography of events. Nonetheless, it does provide a unique view of life in Russia during the turbulent years of WWI, the Russian Civil War and rise of the Soviets, all of which Paustovsky participated in. In 1965, Paustovsky was nominated for a Nobel Prize for literature, the prize was awarded instead to Mikhail Sholokhov. In February 1966 he was one of the 25 prominent figures from science and the arts who signed a letter to the 23rd Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, appealing against re-Stalinization in the wake of the Sinyavsky-Daniel trial. He died in Moscow on July 14, 1968. (Wikipedia)

      - An historic autograph musical manuscript of a very early short piece for orchestra in the hand of the great conductor known for conducting the premiere of the Rite of Spring and for his tenures with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, and the San Francisco Symphony. A light-hearted polka named after the notes of its primary theme, which when spoken together quickly form the phrase "Sol facile à cirer" -- "Floor easy to polish" -- the work was composed for piano in 1892, when Monteux was only sixteen and studying at the Paris Conservatory. When invited to conduct a piece at a charity event, he then orchestrated the polka. At this event, according to biographer John Canarina, "Standing for the first time in front of a professional orchestra, directing his own composition, he then and there determined to become a conductor, an ambition, that, according to Monteux, he had harbored since the age of twelve." Although Monteux continued to compose and play the viola as a teenager, it was at this point that his attention turned to conducting, his great calling and passion -- making this work an important marker of this turning point.Scored for flute, oboe, two clarinets, English horn, bassoon, two cornets, three trombones, percussion, and strings, the polka is 92 measures long, over 10 pp. of manuscript in 10-bar systems. Dedicated on the cover to "mon ami Henri Hamburg." In pen and pencil, with page numbers and the title, inscription, and signature on the cover page in blue colored pencil, on 18-stave manuscript paper embossed at the upper left with the seal of Lard-Esnault, Paris. Overall toning, some light former water damage to the lower edge, and light wear and soiling to the cover and edges; overall in very good condition. 14 x 10.5 inches (35.3 x 27 cm). From the estate of Monteux's daughter, Nancie Monteux Barendse.

        CIVIL WAR - ERA MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK,1858 - 1892. Containing Unrelated Writings by Several Members of the Hinton Family of Mecklenburg, Virginia

      [Mecklenburg, VA], 1892. Sewn gatherings, disbound, with remanants of perished leather spine. Wear and soiling throughout; some chips occasionally causing minimal textual loss; last leaf quite ragged to inner margin, significantly affecting final third of text. Writing in general legible and neat. Good condition, withal.. 29 leaves of lined wove paper, including 4 half-leaves. Lacking first leaf [pp 1 - 2 of lecture notes]; 4 stubs. Inconsistently hand-numbered throughout.Manuscript notes in ink and/or pencil to recto and verso of leaves, with varying amounts of writing per pg. ~1500+ words. Some intratextual hand-drawn illustrations and graphs to lecture notes. 11-1/2" x 7-1/2" A notebook that appears to have been intended for lecture notes kept by Presley Llewellyn Hinton, Jr., during a science class at Randolph-Macon College from 1858 - 59, but that was employed for several different purposes by other members of his family during the same period and throughout the Civil War. The Hintons were slaveholders, owning at least 13 slaves according to the 1860 slave schedule, and longtime prominent members of the community. The lecture notes, which comprise hand-numbered pp 3 - 30 and 51 - 55, are from lectures taught by B. Puryear, Professor of Chemistry and Natural Philosophy; subjects covered include fairly introductory material regarding dew, evaporation, electricity, elements of chemistry (hydrogen and nitrogen gas, carbon, etc.), and the like. Following the first section of lecture notes, three pages by one of the Hinton parents (we speculate Mrs. Hinton) detail Presley’s service in the Confederate Army (Company A, 3rd Virginia Cavalry), as well as that of his brother, William, from 1861 - 63, largely their leave-taking and visits home: “My Son William Emmet Hinton joind the Confederate Army and left home on the 14th day May 1861, to join his company (Mecklinburg Cavalry) at Lockets Store near Lombardy Grove. Many relatives and friends met . . . to take leave of their dear sons, relations, & friends, who consented with cheerfulness to leave their quiet and happy homes to battle against our enemy, the Yankee, who are worse than Indian savages, Yea, to go through all the hardships, privations, difficulties and [?] attending a camp life. . . . My Son Presley Lewellyn Hinton joind the Confederate Army and left home on the 26th day May 1861 . . . He would have gone on with his brother William but he was not prepared, as he had just returned from the University of Virginia . . .” Approximately 15 remaining pages (interrupted by the last section of Presley’s lecture notes) are filled with a detailed account record of tuition charged for teaching the daughters and some sons of local families, which we speculate was kept by the boys’ sister, primarily because of the type of lessons taught. These included piano lessons, worsted work and samplers, grammar, arithmetic, geography, the history of England, and philosophy; fees for ink, copy books, and other supplies are also included. Another account record follows for bonds of some sort, in the same hand as other, and a love letter from Presley to a Miss Annie fills both recto and verso of the final leaf. Interspersed with these and sometimes written over top in pencil are the youthful scribblings and pencilled math work of James H. Palmer, also of Mecklinberg, dated 1892; he appears to have used the manuscript for scrap paper. All in all, a uniquely faceted manuscript, illustrating many aspects of the life of one Virginia family during the Civil War, as well as the paper shortages that likely occasioned such thrift.

        The Influence of Sea Power Upon History 1660?1783;

      London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company, Limited,, 1892-92?99-1905. [together with:] The Influence of Sea Power upon the French Revolution and Empire 1793?1812; [and:] The Life of Nelson, the Embodiment of the Sea Power of Great Britain. Together 3 works in 5 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, titles gilt to spines, gilt pictorial devices to the front boards, top edges gilt, black surface-paper endpapers. Numerous plates, maps, plans diagrams, some of them folding, as called for. Just a little rubbed, corners bumped, a few slightly dings to the front board of the first-named, one or two hinges a touch strained, but overall a very good group. Early London editions of some of Mahan's most influential texts. Described by John Keegan as "the most important American strategist of the nineteenth century", and by Barbara Tuchman as "the Clausewitz of naval warfare". Mahan's development of the concept of "sea power" has been identified as one of the major factors in the outbreak of the naval arms race at the end of the nineteenth century. All three works were first published in Boston. The editions offered here are: a second London edition, 1892, of The Influence of Sea Power Upon History (first published 1890), using American sheets with cancel titles, mentioning The Influence of Sea Power upon the French Revolution on the title; an unidentified early London edition of The French Revolution and Empire; and a first London edition, 1897, of The Life of Nelson. Armorial bookplates of Robert Balloch to the front pastedown of the first two named.

        Mapa De Los Ferro Carriles De La RepÃ?ºblica Argentina...

      Buenos Aires, DirecciÃ?³n de Ferro Carriles Nacionales, 1892. Printed color topographical map, four parts of eighteen sections each, backed with linen. Each part consists of a single horizontal fold and nine vertical folds and isÃ? attached to its covers at the lower left section. Each section measures 8.25 x 12.25 inches. Each unfolded part of 18 sections measures 24.5 inches high by 74.5 inches wide, the entire map unfolds to eight feet two inches in height and six feet two inches wide. Title continues: Y De Los Paises LimÃ?trofes. Construido segun los datos Ã?© instrucciones suministrados por el Presidente de la Direccion Dor Don Luis Faraoz por el Ingeniero GeÃ?³grafo Dor JosÃ?© Chavanne. The four parts are bound in embossed green cloth covers printed in gold. Despite a bit of old worming and minor stains, the map is handsome and brilliant. Scale: 1: 1,000,000. Oval stamp of the DFCN near the cartouche. The map encompasses approximately 41Ã?° South latitude to approx. 20Ã?° S. latitude, and approx. 53Ã?° West longitude to a little beyond 73Ã?° W. latitude. This includes Chile along its entire western border, in some cases to the Pacific, and parts of Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Railroad lines are shown as far south as BahÃ?a Nueva in Chubut on the east coast and a bit inland from Valdivia (Chile) in the west; in the north AsunciÃ?³n is the farthest inland reach, and both completed and projected sections of the Transandine (Valparaiso toÃ? Buenos Aires) line are shown (the last tunnel was completed in 1909). Development ofÃ? railways in Argentina dates from 1857 and was mostly supported by private companies largely controlled in England, about 15% being owned and operated by the government. Produced following an investment crisis in 1890, this map may have been intended toÃ? encourage support of an already well developed transportation system carrying theÃ? pastoral and agricultural products of Argentinaââ?‰?¢s steadily developing export trade, which contributed greatly to maintaining the countryââ?‰?¢s economic stability. Besides showing railways, the large scale on which this map was produced allows aÃ? comprehensive view of the country and its physical peculiarities. Dry rivers, mountain peaks, saline lakes, central plateaus, the Gran Chaco, countless riversââ?‰? allÃ? areÃ? shown with the detail and elevations one expects from railroad survey expeditions.         EDGAR (1889). Dramma lirico in tre atti di Ferdinando Fontana. Opera completa per Canto e Pianoforte. Nuova edizione [in tre atti]. Riduzione di Carlo Carignani. timbro a secco Febbraio 1892 (Pl.n°53736).

      2ª edizione. Cm.27,2x20,2. Pg.(4), 248. Legatura in mz.pergamena non editoriale con piatti marmorizzati. La coperta originale, in riproduzione fotostatica policroma, è conservata all'interno. Bruniture al frontespizio e restauri cartacei alle ultime nove carte. In generale, causa il tipo di carta usato, i margini delle carte sono abbastanza fragili. Con indicazione degli interpreti della prima esecuzione assoluta del 21 aprile 1889 al Teatro alla Scala: Romilda Pantaleoni, Gregorio Gabrielesco, Pio Marini, Antonio Magini Coletti, Aurelia Cataneo. Al piede dei nominativi degli interpreti la notazione a stampa "Prima esecuzione della nuova Edizione in tre Atti: Ferrara, Teatro Comunale, 28 febbraio 1892". Sempre alla seconda carta dedica autografa manoscritta di Puccini: "All'illustre avvocato Senatore Pelosini, Omaggio di Giacomo Puccini. Torre del lago, 29 ottobre 1894". Buona grafia, firma estesa. Si tratta di una rara seconda edizione dello spartito per canto e Piamo dell'"Edgar" pucciniano. Dopo il buon successo de "Le Villi", opera prima del maestro lucchese nel 1884, Giulio Ricordi commissionò a Puccini una seconda opera, e la scelta cadde su "Edgar", anch'essa, come "Le Villi", su libretto di Ferdinando Fontana, liberamente tratto da "La coupe et les lèvres" di Alfred De Musset. L'opera fu composta dal 1886 al 1889, quando il 21 aprile 1889, sotto la direzione di Franco, fu eseguita, in quattro atti, alla Scala, con discreto successo. In vista di una ripresa, sempre sollecitato dall'attento Ricordi, Puccini revisionò la partitura in vista di una ripresa. Dopo tali modifiche e aggiustamenti, l'opera fu di nuovo rappresentata, sempre in quattro atti, a Lucca nel settembre del 1891, al Teatro del Giglio. Fu dopo questa esecuzione che venne decisa la soppressione del quarto atto, e la nuova versione in tre atti andò in scena al Teatro Comunale di Ferrara il 28 gennaio 1892, sotto la direzione di Carlo Carignani. La presente edizione è quella adottata in tale occasione, e fu utilizzata anche nelle successive messe in scena dello stesso anno, al Teatro Regio di Torino (5 marzo) con Mario Ancona, al Teatro Real di Madrid diretta da Luigi Mancinelli (19 marzo) ed al Teatro Grande di Brescia (18 agosto). In seguito vi furono altre revisioni. La presente edizione è particolarmente rara in quanto, presentando il timbro a secco del febbraio 1892, costituisce in assoluto uno dei primissimi esemplari usciti dai torchi di Casa Ricordi. Il tutto, ovviamente, impreziosito dal bell'autografo del Maestro al Pelosini. "Narciso Feliciano Pelosini (Fornacette di Cascina, 9 giugno 1833 - Pistoia, 9 luglio 1896) si dedicò, oltre al suo mestiere di avvocato, anche alla carriera politica nel campo liberale, ma lasciò traccia di sé anche nel campo della letteratura, che fu la giovanile aspirazione della sua vita. Firmò le sue opere o con la sigla N.F.P. o come Giovan Paolo d'Alfiano, l'antico nome del paese natale. Fu amico di Giacomo Puccini e in un'occasione ne fu anche l'avvocato difensore. Fu titolare della cattedra di diritto penale presso la Scuola di scienze sociali di Firenze e partecipò ad illustri processi dell'epoca, tra cui anche quello fra il politico Giovanni Nicotera e "La Gazzetta d'Italia", giornale di Firenze. Tra le sue conoscenze e amicizie annoverò anche quella di Giosuè Carducci. Il 4 dicembre 1890 fu nominato senatore, militando nella destra. Morì a Pistoia il 9 luglio 1896 e attualmente riposa nel Cimitero della Misericordia della stessa città. Ancora oggi è visibile una lapide presso la sua casa natale in via Tosco Romagnola a Fornacette (Pisa)" (da wikipedia) . > Schickling, 62.E.2, "Second Italian edition": "The edition was announced in the "Gazzetta Musicale" of February 1892 and, according to MRK, printed on February 1892. Compared to 62.E.1 [the first edition], this edition contains numerous minor changes in dynamics, expression marks, and in the part-writing of the voices". Hopkinson, 2B, "The Dedication has been dropped from this edition. On the Personaggi page the names of the cast are those who took part in the original production but at the foot there is a note giving the place and date of the first production of this new second version". Codice libreria 128559.
