        History of Reynard the Foxe

1892 - [CAXTON, William]. The History of Reynard the Foxe. Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1892. Tall quarto, original full limp vellum, yapp edges, original silk ties. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $8200.Splendid limited Kelmscott Press edition of Reynard, set from Caxton's 1481 English translation of the ancient Dutch tale, one of only 310 copies, in the original vellum.Reynard the Foxe, translated from the Dutch, was "perhaps the most popular of Caxton's translations down the ages" (Deacon, 149). In his preface he disclaims, "If anything be written herein that may grieve or displease man, blame me not, but the fox, for they be his words and not mine." The Kelmscott Press was founded in 1891 by William Morris, Pre-Raphaelite painter, designer, architect, and printer. "Morris sought to revive what he saw as the purity of the first century of printing, and to produce what he described as books which 'would have a definite claim to beauty". and be easy to read" (Feather, 152). His "passionate craftsmanship was the spark which ignited a 50-year renaissance of bookmaking in England, on the Continent, and in the United States" (Art of the Printed Book, 36). The Kelmscott printing of Reynard contains "one of Morris' finest designed titles" (Forman, 164). Text printed in black and red Troy type, with full woodcut ornamental border around the title-page opening, numerous partial borders and elaborate eight-line initial letters. This is one of 300 copies printed on paper from a total edition of only 310. Ransom 10. Peterson A10. Small owner stamp.A few instances of mild embrowning to text; original vellum unusually lovely. A nearly fine copy of this impressive production.

Perlen aus der Instrumenten-Sammlung von Paul de Wit, Leipzig

16 plates in photochromolithography. Title printed in red & black. 1 p.l., 14 pp. Oblong folio, orig. board wrappers, & preserved in what appears to be a specially made binding of pink velvet (upper cover now slightly faded to light brown, spine with a little wear), upper cover with central sunken panel with a reproduction of four musicians, elaborate metalwork in each corner. Leipzig: [Privately Published] by de Wit, [1892]. Presentation copy, bound in what I believe is a deluxe presentation binding, inscribed on the title "Souvenir de l'éditeur à M. le dr. Maurice Emmanuel de Paris. Paul de Wit. Leipsic, le 26 Octobre 1897." De Wit (1852-1925), a member of a wealthy Maastricht family, was a viol player and collector of musical instruments; he edited the Zeitschrift für Instrumentenbau in which early instruments were discussed in great detail. De Wit made a number of collections of early musical instruments and the present catalogue contains photographs of the most important pieces in his then-collection. Several hundred instruments are depicted in rich and vivid color. The recipient of this copy was Maurice Emmanuel (1862-1938), French composer and musicologist and one of the genuine independents in French music. A fine copy. ? New Grove, Vol., 6, pp. 154-55 & Vol. 20, pp. 464.

CIVIL WAR - ERA MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK,1858 - 1892. Containing Unrelated Writings by Several Members of the Hinton Family of Mecklenburg, Virginia

[Mecklenburg, VA], 1892. Sewn gatherings, disbound, with remanants of perished leather spine. Wear and soiling throughout; some chips occasionally causing minimal textual loss; last leaf quite ragged to inner margin, significantly affecting final third of text. Writing in general legible and neat. Good condition, withal.. 29 leaves of lined wove paper, including 4 half-leaves. Lacking first leaf [pp 1 - 2 of lecture notes]; 4 stubs. Inconsistently hand-numbered throughout.Manuscript notes in ink and/or pencil to recto and verso of leaves, with varying amounts of writing per pg. ~1500+ words. Some intratextual hand-drawn illustrations and graphs to lecture notes. 11-1/2" x 7-1/2" A notebook that appears to have been intended for lecture notes kept by Presley Llewellyn Hinton, Jr., during a science class at Randolph-Macon College from 1858 - 59, but that was employed for several different purposes by other members of his family during the same period and throughout the Civil War. The Hintons were slaveholders, owning at least 13 slaves according to the 1860 slave schedule, and longtime prominent members of the community. The lecture notes, which comprise hand-numbered pp 3 - 30 and 51 - 55, are from lectures taught by B. Puryear, Professor of Chemistry and Natural Philosophy; subjects covered include fairly introductory material regarding dew, evaporation, electricity, elements of chemistry (hydrogen and nitrogen gas, carbon, etc.), and the like. Following the first section of lecture notes, three pages by one of the Hinton parents (we speculate Mrs. Hinton) detail Presley’s service in the Confederate Army (Company A, 3rd Virginia Cavalry), as well as that of his brother, William, from 1861 - 63, largely their leave-taking and visits home: “My Son William Emmet Hinton joind the Confederate Army and left home on the 14th day May 1861, to join his company (Mecklinburg Cavalry) at Lockets Store near Lombardy Grove. Many relatives and friends met . . . to take leave of their dear sons, relations, & friends, who consented with cheerfulness to leave their quiet and happy homes to battle against our enemy, the Yankee, who are worse than Indian savages, Yea, to go through all the hardships, privations, difficulties and [?] attending a camp life. . . . My Son Presley Lewellyn Hinton joind the Confederate Army and left home on the 26th day May 1861 . . . He would have gone on with his brother William but he was not prepared, as he had just returned from the University of Virginia . . .”Approximately 15 remaining pages (interrupted by the last section of Presley’s lecture notes) are filled with a detailed account record of tuition charged for teaching the daughters and some sons of local families, which we speculate was kept by the boys’ sister, primarily because of the type of lessons taught. These included piano lessons, worsted work and samplers, grammar, arithmetic, geography, the history of England, and philosophy; fees for ink, copy books, and other supplies are also included. Another account record follows for bonds of some sort, in the same hand as other, and a love letter from Presley to a Miss Annie fills both recto and verso of the final leaf. Interspersed with these and sometimes written over top in pencil are the youthful scribblings and pencilled math work of James H. Palmer, also of Mecklinberg, dated 1892; he appears to have used the manuscript for scrap paper. All in all, a uniquely faceted manuscript, illustrating many aspects of the life of one Virginia family during the Civil War, as well as the paper shortages that likely occasioned such thrift.

Pittsburgh 1892 - 390pp. plus plates and folding blueprint map, Laid in. Original gilt cloth. With the blueprint map: from an edition limited to fifty copies. This copy contains the scarce folding blueprint map, showing the route of the forty-niners from Independence, Missouri to Sacramento, California, and the political subdivisions of the West in the mid-19th century. This is one of the most important and readable of all the forty-niner overland narratives. Jim Stewart served as the guide for the author's party.         1891 ????: ?????? ????????? ?????? ? ?????? ????????? ??????????. [St. Petersburg's City Public Administration in 1891. Reports of the City Council and Other City Agencies].

Tipografia Shredera S.-Peterburg 1892 - Octavo (24.3 x 15.5 cm), two parts in 1 vol. CCXLVI pp., including title, with 12 plates (1 double page), 1 folding plan and a large folding map of Saint Petersburg; 598 pp. with 1 folding table; owner's inscription to title, closed tear to large folding map. Original publisher's pictorial cloth. A fine example of an annual report of the city council and other Saint Petersburg institutions that provides a wealth of statistical and financial data, including population of the city, urban development and construction, important decisions implemented by the council and a financial report for the year. At the end of XX century Saint Petersburg was the largest city in the Russian Empire. Like other large European cities that faced a rapid development it started to struggle with a growing number of urban problems: housing, transport, public health, which were turning critical in the absence of an effective management. A solution for such large scale problems required not only a consistent urban policy and substantial investments, but also changes in the relationships between the state, the city authorities and citizens. Pressure for changes prompted Alexander II to conduct a major reform in 1870, under which the central government delegated responsibility for the urban development and general administration of cities to the local councils. The report offered here shows the results of the work of the city council 21 years after it assumed the responsibilities for managing the city. Of special interest is the financial part showing the revenues, the largest part of which came from taxes on property, trades, crafts and enterprises located in the city, and expenditure. All the real estate property that belonged to the ministries and members of the Imperial family was freed from taxation. As Saint Petersburg was the capital of the Russian Empire and, hence, home to the Imperial family and all the central government agencies, it was struggling to fill the city budget.         The Journal of Indian Art, Vol. 4, Nos. 33-37

London: W. Griggs, 1892. Hardbound. Contents are VG or better, front inner hinge and gutter weak. Bottom 3 inches of spine cloth attached only at back hinge. Edges of 6 leaves chipped with small pieces of margin area missing. There is light off-setting from each colored plate onto the facing page (usually a blank page, so no text is marred). The volume is ex-library from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with a stamp on the title page, a sticker on the back free end paper, and the remnant of a pocket inside the back cover. In addition, each color plate is library-stamped on the reverse. A personal bookplate of William Sturgis Bigelow, Boston surgeon and collector of Asian (especially Japanese) art. He donated his entire collection of 25,000 works of art to the MFA. The contents are bound consecutively but without original covers, as various "chapters" of a book. The original paper covers are bound together, in order, at the back of the volume.. Green gilt embossed publisher's cloth. Unpaginated, and filled with breathtaking colored chromolithographs and other two-tone plates and images (1 folding bw plate, 1 folding color plate, 2 double-page color plates, and 28 single color plates). A bit heavy at 6 pounds and will require extra postage. Scholarly literature on the decorative arts in India is scanty and mainly in learned journals. The Journal of Indian Art and Industries (1886-1916) is the most important and contains numerous pioneering studies. Original front and rear wraps from each issue are bound in at the rear. These covers have the contents of each issue printed on them. This is the exceedingly rare third volume of this seminal and Influential periodical on Indian arts. See article by Peter H. Hoffenberg entitled "John Lockwood Kipling, W. H. Griggs and The Journal of Indian Art and Industry" written in 2003 for a complete description of this periodical. He states: "...Kipling's and Buck's vision encouraged use of the latest photographic and reproductive innovations to ensure accurate and attractive illustrations of lasting quality. Griggs and his editorial staff took advantage of that encouragement and of the most current technology to produce exquisite color chromo- and photo-lithographs bound in leather. Black and white illustrations were also included...No doubt the publisher applied chromo-lithographic technologies from Britain and the continent, but the pages of the Journal also included illustrations resulting from innovative work in the heliogravure and collotype sections of India's own Revenue and Agriculture Department, particularly the offices devoted to the Survey of India. " The first 4 or 5 volumes of this publication seem exceedingly scarce.

The over-wrappers are somewhat age-darkened, especially along the spines, and there is some splattering to the front over-wrapper of Vol. l. Text blocks with generally unbumped spine heads and tails, and bindings with moderately bumped corners. Off-setting to the front and rear FEPs from the over-wrappers. With gently deckled fore and bottom page edges to a handsome effect. With 208 and 183 umbered pages. Illustrated with 15 copperplate etchings and with 210 B&W illustrations in text. All etchings and illustrations are by the author. Also with charming headbands and decorated initials. A few of the etchings with tiny, light spots to the outer margins, quite minor. Several text pages with light spotting or off-setting. Else the book is impressively clean. With many pages unopened, hence largely unread. A Very Good copy in Very Good Minus over-wrappers. Very scarce in any condition. A valuable reference work for collectors and dealers of ceramics and stoneware from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Extensive commentary, information, and examples are given for each geographic region discussed. Marc-Louis Solon [1835-1913] was a French-born pottery artist and expert.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Illus. by Solon, Marc-Louis. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Limited Edition.

"Sol Fa Si La Si Ré Polka" - Autograph Musical Manuscript from his First Performance with a Professional Orchestra

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An historic autograph musical manuscript of a very early short piece for orchestra in the hand of the great conductor known for conducting the premiere of the Rite of Spring and for his tenures with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, and the San Francisco Symphony. A light-hearted polka named after the notes of its primary theme, which when spoken together quickly form the phrase "Sol facile à cirer" -- "Floor easy to polish" -- the work was composed for piano in 1892, when Monteux was only sixteen and studying at the Paris Conservatory. When invited to conduct a piece at a charity event, he then orchestrated the polka. At this event, according to biographer John Canarina, "Standing for the first time in front of a professional orchestra, directing his own composition, he then and there determined to become a conductor, an ambition, that, according to Monteux, he had harbored since the age of twelve." Although Monteux continued to compose and play the viola as a teenager, it was at this point that his attention turned to conducting, his great calling and passion -- making this work an important marker of this turning point.<br style="">Scored for flute, oboe, two clarinets, English horn, bassoon, two cornets, three trombones, percussion, and strings, the polka is 92 measures long, over 10 pp. of manuscript in 10-bar systems. Dedicated on the cover to "mon ami Henri Hamburg." In pen and pencil, with page numbers and the title, inscription, and signature on the cover page in blue colored pencil, on 18-stave manuscript paper embossed at the upper left with the seal of Lard-Esnault, Paris. Overall toning, some light former water damage to the lower edge, and light wear and soiling to the cover and edges; overall in very good condition. 14 x 10.5 inches (35.3 x 27 cm). From the estate of Monteux's daughter, Nancie Monteux Barendse.
