THE BROWN OWL: A Fairy Story.

London:: T. Fisher Unwin Ltd,. 1892.. Stated "Second edition," though we assume this is actually a second printing or even the first edition, first printing with a new title page inserted (see below). His first book, written to amuse his sister Juliet and published when he was just seventeen years old. Illustrated with two full-page, black-and-white plates by his grandfather, F. Madox Brown, a painter closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. Harvey does not mention this second "edition"-- published the same year as the first--but does note a fourth edition dated 1898 and that "in all editions the title page is in red and black" [Harvey, A1(a-b)]. This copy in quarter blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine with cloth over boards matching that of the first edition, and with pattern on cloth extending to page edges, as in the first. Plain cream-colored endpapers pasted over the original patterned endpapers of the first edition, which are still just barely visible around the edges. Illustrated extra title page lists three titles in the "Children?s Library" on verso, as we presume does the first, and printer's leaf following p.165 reads "Printed by R. & R. Clark, Edinburgh" as in the first edition. INTERESTINGLY, an 1892 New York, Cassell Publishing Company, stated "third edition" DIGITIZED FROM THE HOLDINGS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO LIBRARY is also clearly published using the same plates (if not sheets) and with the same illustrated extra title page listing three titles, printer?s leaf following p.165, and even with the "T. Fisher Unwin" logo on verso of the title page. One has to wonder whether Fisher Unwin sold the sheets from the various print runs with the offer of a cancel title page already inserted. Or, more likely, whether there was only ever one print run--given that there are very few copies in libraries worldwide (between 50 and 60 copies split between several records on OCLC) and only a handful currently offered for sale online. (Which would make Ford?s estimate that "it sold many thousands more copies than any book I ever wrote" highly unlikely [Harvey, p.4].) Contemporary gift inscription at head of page listing titles in the Children?s Library and another pasted to opposing blank page, few minor smudges to margins, covers rubbed and tips a little frayed, still about very good. .

A native of Russia, Metchnikoff moved to Paris in 1888 at the invitation of Louis Pasteur, who gave Metchnikoff a position at the Pasteur Institute. In 1891 Metchnikoff gave a series of lectures at the Institute dealing with “the history of various theories of inflammation and their investigation, and chiefly with the roles of phagocytes in the animal kingdom” (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). The collection lectures were published in 1892, with an English translation appearing the following year. Garrison-Morton.com 2307.

        The Victoria Clock Tower.

1892 - 'The Victorian Clock Tower' Etching, drypoint, printed in black. Buhot's print of the Houses of Parliament and the Clock Tower. Although the print is titled 'The Victoria Clock Tower', the name is slightly mysterious. Although the Victoria Tower was suggested as a name for either the Bell or the Clock Tower in the nineteenth century when Parliament was rebuilt, the nickname of Big Ben became so popular that the idea was abandoned. Instead, the tower at the south west corner was renamed in honour of Queen Victoria during her Diamond Jubilee in 1897, but that was five years after the print was made.         The Principles and Practice of Medicine, Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Students of Medicine

xvi, [2], 1079, [7], 8 pp. 8vo. An immensely important work of general medical knowledge, written by a co-founder of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Osler's creation of the first residency program and emphasis on teaching students through clinical experience rather than lectures led many to call him the father of modern medicine. Garrison-Morton 2231: "Osler's textbook was the best English work on medicine of its time. He became Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford in 1904. Besides being one of the greatest of all clinicians, he was possessed of a fine literary style and an extensive knowledge of medical bibliography. Garrison has written of him: "When he came to die, Osler was, in a very real sense, the greatest physician of our time… Good looks, distinction, blithe, benignant manners, a sunbright personality, radiant with kind feeling and good will toward his fellow men, an Apollonian poise, swiftness and surety of thought and speech, every gift of the gods was his; and to these were added careful training, unsurpassed clinical ability, the widest knowledge of his subject, the deepest interest in everything human, and a serene hold upon his fellows that was as a seal set upon them"." First edition, second state ('Gorgias' spelled correctly on p. vi, June 1892 ads follow text). Professionally rebound - black leather spine, cloth boards, gilt titles, new end sheets. An exceptional copy - no stains, marks, tears, or toning to pages. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1892. First Edition. Collectible; Like New/No Jacket.

The Nature of Gothic A Chapter of the Stones of Venice

London/Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1892. Limited First Edition. Limp Vellum. Very Good. One of 500 copies, all on paper, printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, Hammersmith, and published by George Allen, with a preface by William Morris. 8vo (8" x 5.5".) [1], iv, [1], 127, [1] pp. Elaborate woodcut border on opening page; nine 10-line woodcut initials & numerous 6-line ones, 19 architectural figures in the text, two Kelmscott woodcut devices (front and back). Original limp vellum, yapped edges, spine lettered in gilt, page edges untrimmed. Handsome printing of the chapter from Ruskin's The Stones of Venice. Pages unopened except for the first two leaves. Bookplate of Noel Ledbrook Griffith. John Ruskin (1819?1900) had a strong influence on William Morris and the arts and crafts movement. One can assume that this work must have been an important one for William Morris, who stated in the preface, "In future days [this work] will be considered as one of the very few necessary and inevitable utterances of the century." "This chapter of The Stones of Venice, which Ruskin always considered the most important in the book, was first printed separately in 1854 as a sixpenny pamphlet. Morris paid more than one tribute to it in Hopes and Fears for Art." (Sparling). "This chapter of The Stones of Venice (1853) had previously been reprinted as a 4d. pamphlet by F.J. Furnivall on the occasion of the opening of the Working Men's College in 1853. Cook and Wedderburn, in their Library Edition of Ruskin's Works, add the following bibliographical note: 'The Kelmscott edition was set up from the 1886 edition of the complete work, and some misprints which crept into that issue are repeated.'" (Peterson). From the collection of John Carrol Collins.

A Short History of the English People - 8 Volume Set

Very good condition 4 volume set which consists of 8 books - each volume has a part one and a part 2. 8 volume matched set bound in red levant morocco leather over red cloth covered boards.         The Kiss - Alma-Tadema, 1892.

Prijs: € 3.150,- .

(Garrison-Morton 2307 - Waller 6413 - DSB IX, 334). - Dos passé, bon état intérieur. [Attributes: First Edition]
