Rare Original Photograph of O'Neill as a boy, unsigned, oblong 8vo, with full signature on a small 12mo visiting card

The image shows the future playwright in full length profile, sitting on a rock, with pad and pencil as if he is about to sketch or write. He sits near a lake with a house visible at the lake's edge. The photo has been cropped at the top. On verso, docketed in pencil, are notations for further cutting of the image to remove unwanted margins from the central focus of a charming portrait of O'Neill as a boy. The docketing reads, "Eugene O'Neill 25 years ago." The photographer's stamp shows upside down at the top edge indicating to whom credit should be given when reproductions would be made. The photographer is Nickolas Muray (1892- 1965) who had made other images of O'Neill as an adult. On the black bordered visiting card, Oâ??Neill has crossed out his printed name and written his full name below

[The Works] Hillingdon Hall; Handley Cross; Jorrock's Jaunts and Jollities; Hawbuck Grange; "Plain or Ringlets?"; Mr. Romford's Hounds; Ask Mamma; Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour

London: Bradbury, Agnew & Co., [and others], circa 1892. 8 works in eight volumes, octavo. (8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches). Numerous hand-coloured plates after John Leech, Henry Alken and others, 1 hand-coloured additional title, 6 hand-coloured title vignettes, uncoloured illustrations in 'Handley Cross'. 20th-century red half morocco over cloth-covered boards, bound for Henry Sotheran of Sackville Street, London, by Bayntun-Riviere of Bath, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and fourth compartments, the first with a fox's mask tool, the third with a whip and horseshoe tool, the fifth with a hound's head, the sixth with a horse's heads bordered in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. A finely bound set from the pen of the 19th-century's best known sporting author: Thackeray envied him, William Morris considered him 'a master of life'. The 'Dickens of the Sporting field' Surtees is still very readable today. Surtees' best-selling works are humorous and lively. The author was arguably a match for Dickens in the field of social observation, whilst surpassing him as an observer of the natural world: with warmth and humour Surtees captured an era and a way of life that reached its zenith during Queen Victoria's reign. The 'Sporting Novels' were essential reading in the country houses of Victorian England and deserve a place on the shelves of today's private library.

London: Lawrence & Bullen 1892. London: Lawrence & Bullen, 1892.. Three volumes. Original medium green textured cloth, ruled in blind, spines lettered in gilt. Spine lettering very slightly dull, endsheets a bit tanned, a few minor smudges to cloth, but a very good, tight set, with the bookplate of Pickford Waller in each volume. First edition. Davidson's only triple-decker, a collaboration with Charles James Wills, M.D., M.R.C.S. (1842-1912), and a rare book. Wills was trained as a physician and spent some time in that practice before turning to literature in 1882, at the age of 40. He began his new career as a travel writer, and then went on to publish more than a dozen novels. John Davidson, some 15 years younger than his colleague, is now the better known of the two. He wrote plays, poetry of ideas, journalism, short stories, and philosophy; he was a member of the Rhymers' Club, and a contributor to THE YELLOW BOOK. Davidson's later years were wretched, despite the patronage of such notables as Edmund Gosse and George Bernard Shaw, and in the end he committed suicide. Recent studies have revealed that Davidson wrote other books with Wills, but this title is the only one to acknowledge the collaboration on the title- page. The NUC lists four copies (CtY, MiU, NjP, NNC), to which OCLC adds two others (CLU [Sadleir], TxU). Not in Wolff and not in the Colbeck collection. We've handled one other set, some years ago, as part of a Davidson collection sold en bloc. SADLEIR 676. STONEHILL 9. NCBEL III:620.

London: L. Upcott Gill. 1892. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. H Hard Cover. Good. Published 1892-1894. Five volumes. Originally published as a three volume set, with this copy bound into five separate volumes in half leather, the bindings consistent with the date of publication (1890s). An important and well-illustrated work on ferns and selaginellas, with 22 plates in full color (one folding), 19 plates in a single color, either green or brown, 50 plates in black and white, seven of which are folding plates. Half reddish-brown leather lettered in gilt with gilt spine banding, boards covered in red and black marbled paper. Vol I: 320p plus plates, bound without preliminaries (such as title page), beginning at page one with a frontis plate. Vol II: 321-666p. plus plates. Vol. III: 288p. plus plates, again bound without preliminaries. Vol. IV: 289- 621p., (1), 2p. ads. plus plates. Vol. V: (8), 457p. 3p. ads, plus plates. Volume III was bound with a separate half-title and title page at the front, as well as an index to the entire work at the back (all included in page count). Covers have some edgewear and rubbing but no chips, a bit of fading to the spines, joints/hinges good with covers firmly attached. No names or other markings, some very light scattered foxing affecting a few text pages, not the plates. One tiny lower margin tear to p. 257/258 in volume I, no other chips or tears. The rear cover and a few pages of volume I have been exposed to moisture, with the marbled paper on the rear cover a bit lifted, the rear pastedown bubbled, and pages 257-320 of volume I a bit rippled, only affecting two black and white plates. The rippling is accompanied by a faint margin dampstain to pages 275-320, with the dampstain a bit darker and affecting a bit more of the final twenty pages, perhaps about 15% of the page area at lower right. A sound and attractive set.

Proof portrait wood engraving of Harriet Beecher Stowe, and artist's Autograph Letter, signed concerning it, with another engraving of unidentified man

n.p 1892 n.p, 1892. (STOWE, HARRIET BEECHER) Stowe image 9-1/2 x 7-1/4 inches, 14 x 11 inches overall. . Stowe engraving with almost imperceptible tear without loss, others fine. Scribner's Magazine, February 1895, pp. 186-88 . Gustav Kruell (1843-1907) was born in Germany and established himself as an engraver in Stuttgart. He came to the US in 1873, and quickly obtained commissions from the leading illustrated periodicals. He fell under the artistic influence of the famed engraver W.J. Linton, with the result that his portraits took on a clarity and liveliness uncommon in his day. His most famous work is probably the Lincoln of 1891; the following year he produced the superb Stowe portrait offered here (Stowe died in 1896). His Autograph Letter, signed, written from East Orange, NJ to J.R. Mitchel conveying the proof, reads, "Your favor enclosing check if $15.00 for Portrait of Beecher Stowe came to me today--I send the same by express with this. I hope the picture will not disappoint you for I sought for no effect but tried to make every one see into this great woman who could [be?] so calm in a time of greatest excitements as only a true woman can do. Very truly yours, G. Kruell." Also included is a fine 5 x 7 proof portrait of an unidentified man--both it and the Stowe portrait are signed in the plate and in pencil below.

Munchen, Franz Hanfstaengl, s. d.

The New Englander, New Englander and Yale Review, and the Yale Review, in 131 bound volumes, from 1843 through Summer 1969, missing only one year (1862)

Maltby Wiley Ginn Yale et al. New Haven: Maltby, Wiley, Ginn, Yale, et al.. 1892. First edition. Hardcover. Ex-Library. Ex-Library set of bound volumes of "The New Englander," which was later called "New Englander and Yale Review," which was later called "The Yale Review," from 1843 - Summer, 1969. The journal, regarded as the oldest literary quarterly in the US, was founded originally in 1819 as The Christian Spectator. In 1843 it changed its name to "The New Englander," and its focus to history and economics. In 1885 it was renamed to "The New Englander and Yale Review." Finally, in 1892, new editor Henry Walcott Farnam changed the name to its current title, "The Yale Review," and decided to focus more on politics and history, and, eventually, literature and poetry. This set contains 131 bound volumes, starting with Volume 1 of "The New Englander" (1843), through Volume 58 of "The Yale Review," (1968- 9). This set lacks only one book, Volume 21 of "The New Englander," (1862), but it does have an additional index to the first 19 volumes of "The Yale Review." Library stickers on spines, bookplates on front pastedowns, and stamping (ink and blindstamps) to prelims and title pages. Contents are readable and unmarked. Many of the early volumes have tissue- covered plates. Some of the earliest volumes are in 1/2 leather bindings, but most of their boards are loose. The later volumes are bound in green and black library buckram. "The New Englander" attracted some well known names, but the modern history of the journal, beginning with its appointment of Wilbur Cross as editor in 1911, featured writers such as Thomas Mann, Henry Adams, Virginia Woolf, George Santayana, Robert Frost, José Ortega y Gasset, Eugene O’Neill, Leon Trotsky, H.G. Wells, Thomas Wolfe, John Maynard Keynes, H.L. Mencken, A.E. Housman, Ford Madox Ford, Wallace Stevens, John Berryman, W. H. Auden and Randall Jarrell. 131 volumes. Will require extra postage.

London: Elkin Mathews & John Lane, 1892. ONE OF 250 COPIES. A Prominently Signed Binding by Annie MacDonald,With Impressively Modelled Detail in Cover Scenes 197 x 146 mm (7 3/4 x 5 3/4"). 6 p. l., 100 pp., 4 leaves (colophon and ads). EXCEPTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE MODELLED GOATSKIN BY MRS. ANNIE MACDONALD OF THE GUILD OF WOMEN BINDERS, front cover with large lobed frame, its upper corners enclosing the binder's initial and the date (1897), the lower corners with daffodil blooms, the large central panel showing an elaborately detailed scene featuring a woman with long, flowing hair entreating the god Mercury in his signature winged hat and sandals, the two figures surmounted by an imperial crown through which twines a sprig of mistletoe (a design that appears in the woodcut frame on the title page), lower cover showing the woman kneeling by a man reclining on a couch, this scene enclosed in an oval beaded frame; flat spine with modelled title flanked by pine cone device at head and tail, green watered silk pastedowns framed by unusual turn-ins decorated with gilt vines and calf circles painted green and blue, leather hinges, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Title page with full woodcut border filled with intertwined pine branches and mistletoe, colophon with pine cone device. Verso of front flyleaf with engraved bookplate of Charles Williston McAlpin (see below); extra paper title labels tipped onto rear blank. Two tiny red (ink?) marks to upper cover, inevitable offsetting from turn-ins to endpapers, once-detached front flyleaf tipped onto front free endpaper, other trivial defects, but still A VERY ATTRACTIVE COPY, the binding lustrous and scarcely worn, and the leaves fresh and clean. This book is a wonderful example of both the writing and binding skills of women in the Arts and Crafts movement. According to DNB, "Michael Field" was the pseudonym adopted by poet Katharine Harris Bradley (1846-1914) and her niece Edith Emma Cooper (1862-1913), who together aspired "to write great verse tragedies based on historical subjects, calling up the male Elizabethan tradition and eschewing modern realism." This work is a dramatic retelling of a popular Medieval tale: the poisoning of the Holy Roman Emperor Otho III by his concubine Stephania, in revenge for the murder of her husband, Otho's political opponent Crescentius. DNB tells us our poets "issued much of their work through private presses in small, beautifully decorated editions," many of them designed by their friend, the artist Charles Ricketts. The future founder of the Vale Press designed and illustrated several books for our publishers Mathews and Lane around the time this work was issued, so it is conceivable that he is responsible for the attractive woodcut decoration here. The style of modelled leather that we see on our covers originated in Edinburgh with Mrs. Annie MacDonald (d. 1924), whose own work and that of her pupils played an important role in the history of British bookbinding, especially among women. Inspired by Medieval books, she began teaching herself and others in the early 1890s (in a group that became known as the Edinburgh Arts and Crafts Club) the special technique of modelling seen on our binding. MacDonald used undressed goatskin, which mellows with age from white to a rich amber color, and worked it with one small tool, without cutting, raising, or padding the leather. Tidcombe gives MacDonald the credit for inspiring the bookseller Frank Karslake in 1898 to establish the Guild of Women Binders (see following two items) and says that "MacDonald was the prime mover in this, as she was eager to have a London outlet for bindings produced by her group. . . . Their modelled goatskin bindings comprised 40 of the 114 bindings shown in the first Guild exhibition." The design of our binding is impressive in the precision and extent of detail seen in the modelling, and it is, as a whole, a fine, flamboyant, and prominently signed exemplar of MacDonald's work. Former owner Charles Williston McAlpin, son of tobacco magnate David McAlpin, served as Secretary of Princeton University (his alma mater) from 1901 to 1914.

An encampment of Kelly's Army with Jack London

A few brown spots in upper area (sky), a pencilled arrow pointing to Jack London in lower right corner, pencilled in the sky area "Jack London". Background faded but middle and foreground very strong and clear. Original photographic print approximately 5-1/2 x 7-3/4 inches. sepia toned photograph, mounted on black cardboard The photograph was taken in the spring of 1892 when the young author-to-be was briefly a member of "Kelly's Army". This west coast group was a contingent of what was known as "Coxey's Army". Jacob S. Coxey had the idea that nationwide road building backed by vast federal funding would provide a source of enployment during that depressed time. The reason behind the "armies" was to have them march on Washington in support of the idea.& This photograph shows a large group of men sprawled on the ground with a rooster in the center. Some tents and two American flags are visible in the closer background. In the foreground are two men, one facing away from the camera and the other, Jack London, facing the camera.& The photograph was first reproduced in The Book of Jack London by Charmian London on page 165, later in A Pictorial Life of Jack London by Russ Kingman, page 53.& With:& The Palimpsest. Jack London and Kelly's Army. Iowa City, Iowa: The State Historical Society of Iowa, 1971. 12mo, pictorial wrappers. Fine. The volume contains the part of London's diary or "log" that he wrote while with Kelly's army by permission of Charmian London. It gives a rich background to the photograph .
