The Poetical Works of Matthew Prior

London - George Bell & Sons, 1892. London - George Bell & Sons, 1892 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A finely bound revised edition of The Poetical Works of Matthew Prior with Memoir. Bound in half leather and decorative paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering. A New Edition. Bound by Hatchards, with a bookbinder's ink stamp on the front free-endpaper. Matthew Prior, 1664 1721, was an English poet and diplomat. He was educated at Westminster School, and St Johns College, Cambridge, becoming friends with Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax, from an early age. It was an age when satirists could be sure of patronage and promotion. Montagu was promoted at once, and Prior, three years later, became secretary to the embassy at the Hague. After four years of this, he was appointed a gentleman of the King's bedchamber. The poet's knowledge of French is specially mentioned among his qualifications. After his return from France, where he had acted as ambassador, Prior became under-secretary of state and succeeded John Locke as a commissioner of trade. In 1701 he sat in Parliament for East Grinstead. When the Tories came into power in 1710, Prior held a prominent place in all negotiations with the French court, however when the Queen died and the Whigs regained power, he was impeached by Robert Walpole and forced into retirement. Prior published works throughout his life, from 1687 onwards. In the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Prior is described as the famous British diplomatist who was arguably the most important poet writing in English between the death of Dryden (1700) and the poetic majority of Pope in 1712. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is slight wear to the extremities, including very mild bumping and rubbing to the heads of the spines particularly. Internally the pages have slight browning to the edges, and very occasional spot..

Text by Erast? Ramiro, (pseud. of Eug? Rodrigues). Paris: E. Dentu, 1892. First edition. one of 300 copies. Tall 8vo. Red morocco with marbled boards and endpapers. Partially printed in color. With 11 original etchings in black. Cours de danse fin de si?e is a charming fin-de-si?e work, but one which depicts ballet studies with an accuracy and rigor. Gordon Ray notes Legrand creates etchings that avoid the prurient Parisian fascination with naked legs, choosing instead a Zolaesque accuracy of the exercises that ballet dancers practiced day after day. "No more than with Degas is there anything titillating about the dancers poses; indeed, Legrand seems to have selected their most difficult positions." Reference: Carteret IV; 331; Ray.         Bracebridge Hall

London - Macmillan and Co., 1892. London - Macmillan and Co., 1892 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A lovely illustrated edition of Irving's novel, illustrated by Caldecott in astraight grain moroccoBumpus binding with binder's stamp to front pastedown. With an engravedillustration to frontispiece and illustrated title page and numerous further illustrations throughout. A reprint of the 1887 third edition. Bracebridge Hall, or The Humorists, A Medley was written by Washington Irving in 1821, while he lived in England, and published in 1822. This episodic novel was originally published under his pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon. As this is a location-based series of character sketches, there are a number of individual plots. The tales centre on the occupants of an English manor (based on Aston Hall, near Birmingham, England, which was occupied by members of the Bracebridge family and which Irving visited). Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 -November 28, 1859) was an American author, essayist, biographer and historian of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle, both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. He made his literary debut in 1802 with a series of observational letters to the Morning Chronicle, written under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. After moving to England for the family business in 1815, he achieved international fame with the publication of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. in 1819. He continued to publish regularly - and almost always successfully - throughout his life. Irving, along with James Fenimore Cooper, was among the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe, and Irving encouraged American authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Edgar Allan Poe. Irving was also admired by some European writers, including Sir Walter Scott, Lord Byron, Thomas Campbell, Francis Jeffrey, and Charles Dickens. As America's first genuine internationally best-selling author, Irving advocated for writing as a legitimate profession, and argued for stronger laws to protect American writers from copyright infringement. Condition: In afine straight-grain morocco binding. Externally, generally smart but with minor wear to extremities. Front hinge strained, rear hinge slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Bright withonly the odd spot. With an ink stampto front blank that has been erased in ink, creating slight loss and an ink mark to subsequent page. Overall: VERY GOOD.

The nurse, turned equestrian explorer, was intent on bringing medical relief to Russias forgotten wounded, as well as finding a herb which was allegedly a cure for leprosy.
