Canceled Check Payable to Lucy Stone.

Jan 2, 1892, Boston - Canceled check drawn on the North National Bank by Henry R. Blackwell drawn to the order of "Mrs. Lucy Stone" and endorsed by her at reverse in black ink Lucy Stone. Size: 2-7/8" x 7-7/8", white paper printed in dark blue. Two punch holes, else fine. Lucy Stone (1818-1893) feminist, abolitionist and suffragist, had as a young woman decided against marriage; she would " 'call no man my master' " [NAW]. Henry Blackwell, seven years her junior, set out to persuade her that marriage need not be a constraint but a partnership. After marriage, Lucy chose to keep her maiden name, prefixing it with a "Mrs." to denote her marital status and thus added the phrase "Lucy Stoner" to the language to mean a married woman retaining her given name. Henry Blackwell kept faith with his wife; throughout her life he worked to enable her to pursue the cause of women's rights. His financial and moral support made her long-time editorship of the WOMEN'S JOURNAL possible. Written at the end of her life, the check documents the respect and integrity between these two remarkable people who so profoundly directly and indirectly effected the women's rights movement.         Catalogue of the Works of Antiquity and Art Collected by the Late William Henry Forman, Esq., Pippbrook House, Dorking, Surrey, and Removed in 1890 to Callaly Castle, Northumberland, by Major A. H. Brown

Printed for Private Circulation. 1892. 4to, [4],209,[32]pp., 7 plates of outlines of Greek vases, section on Greek vases, Statuary, Bronze etc. and Hogarth's life and work, cont. full polished calf, five raised bands, spine gilt extra, contrasting red morocco label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, a fine copy. Thomas Seaton Forman (1791-1850) and his brother William Henry Forman (1794-1869), had a very successful career within the Welsh iron trade. "His wealth also allowed him to purchase Pippbrook House, Dorking, in 1849, and then to indulge fully in his hobby of collecting antiques and objets d'art. He died in 1850 at Pisa, while on a collecting trip to Italy."—(Oxford DNB). The collection then past into the hands of William Henry who had a purpose built museum erected at Pippbrook to house it. "Upon his death the 'London Illustrated News' informs us that the house was left to Thomas Seaton's widow Elizabeth, but that the residue of the estate, presumably including the contents of the museum were left to William's nephew, Alexander Henry Brown, the eldest son of his sister Helena, who had married a Major Arthur Henry Browne of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Before the removal of the contents of Pippbrook House a 'Catalogue of the Works of Antiquity and Art collected by the late William Henry Forman... and removed in 1890 to Callaly Castle, Northumberland' was produced by Major Arthur Henry Browne and William Chaffers. Upon the death of Elizabeth, who had since remarried, the estate was bedevilled by family disputes; Pippbrook House was eventually sold up by order of the Court of Chancery, and the Forman Collection was dispersed at a sale by Sotheby's on 19th June 1899."—Ashton, Pictures in the Garrick Club. pp. 266-267. The Catalogue briefly listing over 4000 items and includes a 32 page glossary of terms used in ancient art.

        Autograph letter signed.

Simla (India), 23. V. 1892. - 8vo. 8 pp. on 4 ff. Gilt-embossed crowned royal stationery. With original stamped and sealed mailing envelope. An engaging letter, evidently sent in conjunction with a listing of the maharajrana's horses ("every one tells me that if is the finest Arab stable in India [.]"). In it he gives accounts of his successes as a participant in local racing: "As it was the 1st year I gave this I did not think it right to run myself for the gold cup [.] I also divided the Guzrot cup this year with my cousin. I did not care to run against him, as I saw lie was awfully nervous & nearly cried when he was in the final & knew he had to run [against] me [.] I was [.] delighted to divide with him, for I have taught him the game & this was the first time we [tied for] a cup & as I have all the cups now I prefer it with both of our names on this for we may never have a chance of putting our names on one again [.]". - His Highness discusses other racing matters, and ends by reporting that the temperature is 120 in the shade. Nihal Singh received the order of Commander of the Bath, and frontier medal for services in the Tirah campaign; he ruled from 1873 until his death in 1901. General Sir Thomas Dennehy (b. 1829) served as Political Agent, Dholpur, 1879-85; he was extra Groom in Waiting to Queen Victoria in 1888 and to Edward VII in 1901. The sharing of enthusiasm for equestrian sports between British officers and administrators and well-placed Indians was an imperishable feature of the British Raj, as this interesting and affectionate letter shows. - Letter in fine condition, envelope with closed tear.       Buenos Aires, Direccin de Ferro Carriles Nacionales, 1892. Printed color topographical map, four parts of eighteen sections each, backed with linen. Each part consists of a single horizontal fold and nine vertical folds and isattached to its covers at the lower left section. Each section measures 8.25 x 12.25 inches. Each unfolded part of 18 sections measures 24.5 inches high by 74.5 inches wide, the entire map unfolds to eight feet two inches in height and six feet two inches wide. Title continues: Y De Los Paises Limtrofes. Construido segun los datos instrucciones suministrados por el Presidente de la Direccion Dor Don Luis Faraoz por el Ingeniero Gegrafo Dor Jos Chavanne. The four parts are bound in embossed green cloth covers printed in gold. Despite a bit of old worming and minor stains, the map is handsome and brilliant. Scale: 1: 1,000,000. Oval stamp of the DFCN near the cartouche. The map encompasses approximately 41 South latitude to approx. 20 S. latitude, and approx. 53 West longitude to a little beyond 73 W. latitude. This includes Chile along its entire western border, in some cases to the Pacific, and parts of Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Railroad lines are shown as far south as Baha Nueva in Chubut on the east coast and a bit inland from Valdivia (Chile) in the west; in the north Asuncin is the farthest inland reach, and both completed and projected sections of the Transandine (Valparaiso toBuenos Aires) line are shown (the last tunnel was completed in 1909). Development ofrailways in Argentina dates from 1857 and was mostly supported by private companies largely controlled in England, about 15% being owned and operated by the government. Produced following an investment crisis in 1890, this map may have been intended toencourage support of an already well developed transportation system carrying thepastoral and agricultural products of Argentina?s steadily developing export trade, which contributed greatly to maintaining the country?s economic stability. Besides showing railways, the large scale on which this map was produced allows acomprehensive view of the country and its physical peculiarities. Dry rivers, mountain peaks, saline lakes, central plateaus, the Gran Chaco, countless rivers? allareshown with the detail and elevations one expects from railroad survey expeditions. Stock#NS0156.

THE GERM GROWERS. AN AUSTRALIAN STORY OF ADVENTURE AND MYSTERY. By Robert Easterley and John Wilbraham [pseudonym]

Melbourne: Melville, Mullen, & Slade. London: Hutchinson & Co.,. 1892. original medium blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in dark blue.. Cloth rubbed at spine ends, corner tips, and along outer joints,. spine panel a bit darkened, some foxing and darkening to endpapers, a. very good copy. Still a nice copy and better than most extant copies.. (#110244). First edition, Australian issue. The Australian issue utilizes the same sheets as the British issue with signature [A] replaced. Among the earliest novels to postulate an invasion of earth by malignant aliens. "The two most imaginative and colorful of the early [Australian] romances were THE LAST LEMURIAN: A WESTRALIAN ROMANCE (1898) by G. Firth Scott and THE GERM GROWERS (1892) by Robert Potter... Potter's THE GERM GROWERS more closely resembles the SF of today. It is probably the world's first story of an alien invasion, produced in Melbourne six years before H. G. Wells's THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. Shape-shifter aliens establish bases in wilderness areas of Earth, including northwest Australia. Unlike the Martians of Wells's book, they do not resort to open warfare with vastly superior technology, but use airships, invisibility, and biological weapons. While exploring the Kimberleys, two English youths stumble upon a plot by the aliens to destroy humanity through the breeding of new forms of plague. At first the conspirators appear merely to be members of some secret society, but it is soon revealed that they are nothing less than devils from outer space (their leader being Signor Niccolo Davelli). The heroes refuse to work for these disease-disseminating devils, and good triumphs over evil when they are rescued by an angel. As in much modern 'aliens among us' SF, the world remains blissfully unaware of the danger by the novel's end because another more benevolent race of aliens steps in to keep the peace." - Blackford, et al., Strange Constellations: A History of Australian Science Fiction, pp. 14-6; 227. "History as an occult battle between two races for humanity." - Suvin, Victorian Science Fiction in the UK, p. 50. "A literate, pre-Wellsian novel with considerable imagination." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1227. Bleiler, Science- Fiction: The Early Years 646.       Zurich, M. Kreutzmann, 1892. 4to. xlii, 118 pp., 52 chromolithographed plates, finished by hand, and two plain lithographs. Original half leather binding with title printed in gilt on the front cover.* Rare German edition (Volbracht: "sehr selten") of this finely illustrated work on the edible and poisonous mushrooms of Switzerland, and bordering regions in France and Germany. The plates, drawn by the author, are of an outstanding quality and often sold separately. Fritz Leuba (1848-1910) was a Swiss pharmacist and as such very interested in venomous and edible mushrooms. Professionally rebacked, with part of the original spine with gilt title laid down. A very good copy with nice clean plates. Nissen BBI, 1183; Stafleu & Cowan, 4458; Volbracht, 1172.

        AUTUMN

1892. Edited by H.G.O. Blake. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1892. Original dark green cloth with facsimile signature in gilt, beveled. First Edition, which consisted of only 1020 copies (Borst says there were only 500, but Blanck's figure is more likely). This was the last of Thoreau's four "seasons" to be posthumously published from his journal: EARLY SPRING had come out in 1881, followed by SUMMER in 1884; curiously, WINTER came next, in 1888. Even using Blanck's larger number of copies, AUTUMN is one of the two scarcest (EARLY SPRING consisted of 1018 copies, while the other two consisted of 1260 and 1550 respectively).~This is a bright copy, fine with just a bit of rubbing at the extremities. With the bookplate of Henry Hornblower, plus part of the small Brentano's booklabel (probably from this copy's initial sale). Borst A11.1.a; Blanck 20130.

        Favorite Flies & Their Histories

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin, 1892. First Edition, first issue, with date "1892" on title-page. Thick 8vo. Illustrated with 32 color plates of flies, engravings of natural insects & 8 photos. viii, [ii], 521 pp. Bound in three quarters morocco and marbled boards. Ownership of Alfred A. Kiggins. About fine. Wetzel p. 180; Goodspeed, p. 276 et seq.; Bruns M40 . The classic work of late nineteenth century American fly fishing. An interesting and attractive book, "an important work on the flies in use during the latter past of the nineteenth century - exquisite colored plates -" (Wetzel), which went into several editions. It was written (and compiled from her father's correspondence) by the daughter of Charles F. Orvis, famed American tackle-maker and author of "Fishing With the Fly" (1883). Goodspeed notes that while Mrs. Marbury was "not herself a fisher-woman", she was an expert at making flies, which she tied without the aid of a vise. Much of the book consists of the replies her father received from anglers to whom he had posed questions concerning the sport

Untersuchungen Ueber die Ausbreitung der elektrischen Kraft [ Über ]

Johann Ambrosius Barth Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1892. Half-Leather. Very Good. VI, [2], 295, [1] pages. Half leather over marbled boards. Minor wear and scuffing to the leather extremities, front joint just starting at top. Bright and clean internally.'THE THEORY OF WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY'. Hertz produced experimental proof of Faraday and Maxwell's hypothesis that 'electrical waves can be projected through space...' starting in 1887. 'By inducing the waves to produce an electric spark at a distance, with no apparentt connexion between the oscillator and the spark gap, and by moving the sparking apparatus so that the length of the spark varied, [Hertz] proved beyond question the passage of electric waves through space...J. J. Thomson described the results as 'one of the most marvellous triumphs of experimental skill.'' This volume collects and reprints papers on electrical waves first published between 1887-1890 in Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Includes explanatory notes and Hertz's 31 page introduction.'This discovery and its demonstration led directly to radio communications, television and radar.'
