The New Englander, New Englander and Yale Review, and the Yale Review, in 131 bound volumes, from 1843 through Summer 1969, missing only one year (1862)

Maltby, Wiley, Ginn, Yale, et al., New Haven 1892 - Ex-Library set of bound volumes of "The New Englander," which was later called "New Englander and Yale Review," which was later called "The Yale Review," from 1843 - Summer, 1969. The journal, regarded as the oldest literary quarterly in the US, was founded originally in 1819 as The Christian Spectator. In 1843 it changed its name to "The New Englander," and its focus to history and economics. In 1885 it was renamed to "The New Englander and Yale Review." Finally, in 1892, new editor Henry Walcott Farnam changed the name to its current title, "The Yale Review," and decided to focus more on politics and history, and, eventually, literature and poetry. This set contains 131 bound volumes, starting with Volume 1 of "The New Englander" (1843), through Volume 58 of "The Yale Review," (1968- 9). This set lacks only one book, Volume 21 of "The New Englander," (1862), but it does have an additional index to the first 19 volumes of "The Yale Review." Library stickers on spines, bookplates on front pastedowns, and stamping (ink and blindstamps) to prelims and title pages. Contents are readable and unmarked. Many of the early volumes have tissue- covered plates. Some of the earliest volumes are in 1/2 leather bindings, but most of their boards are loose. The later volumes are bound in green and black library buckram. "The New Englander" attracted some well known names, but the modern history of the journal, beginning with its appointment of Wilbur Cross as editor in 1911, featured writers such as Thomas Mann, Henry Adams, Virginia Woolf, George Santayana, Robert Frost, José Ortega y Gasset, Eugene O’Neill, Leon Trotsky, H.G. Wells, Thomas Wolfe, John Maynard Keynes, H.L. Mencken, A.E. Housman, Ford Madox Ford, Wallace Stevens, John Berryman, W. H. Auden and Randall Jarrell. 131 volumes. Will require extra postage.         The Works] Hillingdon Hall; Handley Cross; Jorrock's Jaunts and Jollities; Hawbuck Grange; "Plain or Ringlets?"; Mr. Romford's Hounds; Ask Mamma; Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour

Bradbury, Agnew & Co., [and others], London 1892 - 20th-century red half morocco over cloth-covered boards, bound for Henry Sotheran of Sackville Street, London, by Bayntun-Riviere of Bath, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and fourth compartments, the first with a fox's mask tool, the third with a whip and horseshoe tool, the fifth with a hound's head, the sixth with a horse's heads bordered in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt A finely bound set from the pen of the 19th-century's best known sporting author: Thackeray envied him, William Morris considered him a master of life. Surtees' best-selling works are humorous and lively. The author was arguably a match for Dickens in the field of social observation, whilst surpassing him as an observer of the natural world: with warmth and humour Surtees captured an era and a way of life that reached its zenith during Queen Victoria's reign. The Sporting Novels were essential reading in the country houses of Victorian England and deserve a place on the shelves of today's private library. (8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches). Numerous hand-coloured plates after John Leech, Henry Alken and others, 1 hand-coloured additional title, 6 hand-coloured title vignettes, uncoloured illustrations in Handley Cross. 8 works in eight volumes, octavo [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In His generous patient bosom he bears the anguish of a worldÓ, and in Volume II where she quotes from Uncle TomÕs death scene: Ã’Oh MasÕr George yeÕ are too late. The LordÕs bought me, and is going to take me home and I long to go. Heaven is better than Kintuck...Ó& Both volumes are also inscribed Ã’Written for Mr. W. H. Cathcart...Ó and signed and dated in full, and inserted in Volume I is an ALS by StoweÕs daughter, Miss H. B. Stowe, 4 pages, 8vo, Hartford, Oct. 17, 1894. Ã’. . . I wished my mother to write in them for you if possible. But writing for her is such an effort now . . . [I] only ask it of her very occasionally . . . I have had her write an extract for each volume on separate paper. I did not venture to have her write in the books, for fear of defacing them . . . I have had her attempt two or three times to write for you but without success until to day, when what she has written is quite as good as we can ever expect from her again. . .Ó.         Robbery Under Arms . A story of life and adventure in the bush and in the goldfields of Australia

London: Macmillan, 1892. Small octavo; in very good condition, bound in later half red morocco with marbled boards, spine with raised bands, top of front board partly sunned. Australian bushranging classic. An attractive nineteenth century edition of Boldrewood's most famous work. Thomas Alexander Brown (1826-1915), best known as novelist Rolf Boldrewood, born in London and immigrated with his family to Sydney in 1830. His father served on the East India Company. Before becoming a police magistrate and gold commissioner Brown lived many years as a squatter in Victoria, a life he described later in his books. Boldrewood's stories are generally regarded as the best descriptions of the squatter's life. Robbery Under Arms is set in the bush and the goldfields about a gang of bushrangers led by Captain Starlight. The tale is narrated by a former bushranger awaiting execution for his crimes. The story was rejected originally by two journals and then finally accepted by the Sydney Mail and published between mid 1882 to 1883 in a weekly serial. When finally published in London in 1888, it achieved wide popularity. It is now considered an Australian classic.

Description of the Star Camera, at the Sydney Observatory

S.T Leigh & Co., Sydney 1892 - Quarto, with a photograph and seven large lithograph plates; original red cloth, some browning and a few institutional stamps, a good copy recased with new endpapers. An overview of an important piece of astronomical instrumentation. The principal observatories in New South Wales during the nineteenth century were at Sydney and Parramatta, and from the 1890s to the 1930s an astrometric camera was run as a field station by Sydney Observatory at Red Hill, which today is Observatory Park, Pennant Hills. The author of this rare work was the Government Astronomer from 1870, who was responsible for some of the major astronomical programmes undertaken in Australia during the nineteenth century. His book shows details of the camera that was used at Red Hill for photographing the Milky Way and for gaining experience in stellar photography. Russell's work with photography was of great importance: see Holden, Photography in Colonial Australia, pp. 61-3 for further details. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Indian Art in Marlborough House and at Sandringham. With an Introduction By Sir George C M Birdwood, K.C.I.E.

W Griggs, London 1892 - Coloured frontispiece of Prince of Wales' arms, 2 plates of royal pedigrees of England and Denmark, printed photo portraits of Prince and Princess of Wales, coloured plate of Marborough House and 4 monochrome plates of rooms there showing collections of Indian arms and armour, colouured plate of Sandringham, 4 plates of room views with arms [one coloured], 11 further plates of artefacts and edged weapons [8 in colour]. 4 other plates called for in the contents list are not present [enamelled plate from Jeypore, Atardan from Jeypore, enamelled inkstand, Kincob]11pp prelims and introduction. Original chromolitho coloured pictorial boards with later overlaid black leather spine [presumably covering a decayed papder covered spine], damage and loss to paper along the edges of the book, covers a little discoloured through age, internally clean apart from some off-setting from the frontispiece plate. A lavishly produced work produced in response to requests for photographs from many of the Ruling Princes of India who had presented the Prince of Wales with many of these weapons and artefacts during his visit to India in the 1870s. That is probably the reason why the book is seldom encountered in England. These objects were displayed around the UK and in Paris after the Prince's return from India and at the Colonial and INdian Exhibition of 1886 before finally being displayed in these two residences. Those at Marlborough House were removed some years ago. Folio [11 x 15ins, 28 x 33cm] [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Jena: Gustav Fischer, 1892 First Edition. A fine copy with a little dustiness. 8vo.,. There are text illus. Weismann, a physician by training, is best known for this classic book on heredity offered here. ' Das Keimplasma ' is the best statement of his new theories regarding life and inheritance. Weismann hypothesized that although the cells of living organisms ultimately die that some portion of the cells do pass from generation to generation carrying the elements of heredity. This he named the ' germ plasm ' the forerunner, so to speak, of genetical science.
