Rare Autograph! Joseph Pulitzer pays a $400 dividend to John A. Cockerill, editor of the ?St. Louis Post-Dispatch? ? endorsed by Cockerill

"Partly Printed Check Signed ?Joseph Pulitzer? in red ink, 8? x 3?. Office of the Post-Dispatch, St. Louis, May 27, 1892. Filled out in another hand to John A. Cockerill Esq. ?dividend? penned in red in unknown hand. Pictorial logo at left. Endorsed ?John A. Cockerill? on verso. Folds. Fine condition.John A. Cockerill (1845-1896) became editor of the ?St. Louis Post-Dispatch? in 1878. In October 1882, at a political rally, lawyer Alonzo Slayback, whose partner was running for Congress, had called the paper ?blackmailers.? In the ?Post-Dispatch,? Cockerill called Slayback a ?coward.? On October 13, 1882, less than five months after endorsing this check, Slayback went to Cockerill?s office and, after a short conversation, pulled a gun from his pocket and aimed it at Cockerill who grabbed his pistol and fired, killing Slayback. Cockerill was tried for murder. Newspapers took sides. The jury?s verdict was ?justifiable homicide committed in self-defense.? After the trial, the ?Post-Dispatch? saw a drop in circulation and number of advertisers. Pulitzer reassigned Cockerill to be editor of his newly acquired ?New York World.? Joseph Pulitzer?s eyes began to fail in the 1880s and by the end of the decade, at age 42, he was virtually blind. Autograph material authentically signed by Pulitzer has rarely appeared on the market. In fact, before this item became available, only one Joseph Pulitzer signed document or letter had appeared at a major public auction in at least the last 25 years."

Neue Studien ueber Hypnotismus, Suggestion und Psychotherapie... Uebersetzt von Dr. Sigm. Freud

Leipzig & Vienna: Deuticke, 1892. BERNHEIM, Hippolyte (1840-1919). Neue Studien ueber Hypnotismus, Suggestion and Psychotherapie .. . Uebersetzt von Dr. Sigm. FREUD. 8vo. xii, 380pp. 245 x 165 mm. Contemporary cloth-backed boards. Ex library but a very good copy. Leipzig & Vienna: Deuticke, 1892. FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN, translated by Freud and one of his earliest contributions to psychiatry. See Garrison-Morton 4999. Bernheim opposed Charcot's view of hypnosis and emphasized the verbal, cultural and emotional in treating hysteria. Freud was very much impressed with him: "I went to Nancy in the summer of 1889 where I spent several weeks. I witnessed the astonishing experiments performed by Bernheim on his hospital patients, and it is there that I experienced the strongest impressions relating to the possible use of powerful psychical processes which remained hidden from human consciousness. I had many interesting discussions with him and I undertook to translate into German his two works on suggestion and its therapeutic effects" (quoted in D.S.B.). Grinstein 316.

[Dance Card or Carnet du Bal] Ball der Stadt Wein 7 Februar 1892

Vienna: August Klein, 1892. Morocco, with composite material mount on boards. Very Good Plus. An elaborate Renaissance styled leather dance card, with brass mount ornamentation. Oblong, 9 by 13 cm. Setting this dance card apart from the norm is that it is more like a small book within, with 27 leaves, plus an actual card, and each of the leaves is enriched with B/W illustrations on the rectos. Each of these pages is dedicated to one of the dances, and on most pages, there is a photographic oval cameo of the composer (or composer and lyricist), with the balance of the page given over to illustration(s) of the dance, or a scene somehow evocative of the dance or its spirit. The style of these etched drawings, and the ornamentation that frames and graces them, is very typical of the late nineteenth century and complements the Renaissance Revival relief work on the cover. The front and rear cover have gilt lined rectangular plaques for the title and date. The pencil which also holds the card closed has a brass finial at the top. A pink and white twine runs through the spine and can be suspended by a hook attached to a lady's garment, as usual, and the twine has a decorative tassel as well. Suspended below is a red wax medallion encased in wood, and this is attached to a red and white ribbon. Light rubbing to the leather. The ribbon holding the medal is torn in one place and held together with but a thread. One of two pencil stays partially torn.

"Great care and planning went into his ambitious scheme to explore Japan, Korea, and the little known parts of the northwestern Himalaya and central and western China. He set up collecting stations and trained local people to collect for him. In addition he employed well-known western collectors, such as Albert Stewart Meek (1871-?), who had done so much successful collecting for Lord Rothschild... He was largely successful and his work still stands out as a standard reference work" (Gilbert, Butterfly collectors and painters p. 106). Leech described many species new to science in the present work. John Henry Leech (1862-1900) was educated at Eton and Trinity Hall, Cambridge and developed an early interest in entomology, in particular, the Coleoptera and Lepidoptera.//Nissen ZBI, 2414.

Perlen aus der Instrumenten-Sammlung von Paul de Wit in Leipzig = Perles de la collection d'instruments de M. Paul de Wit à Leipzig (Saxe) = Pearls from the collection of musical instruments of Paul de Wit in Leipzig (Saxony).

Verlag von P. de Wit, Leipzig, first edition, 1892. - Light blue cloth, mounted cover illustration, oblong folio, 23 x 37 cm, 14, [1] pp, 16 chromolithograph plates by Emil Pinkau. A magnificently-illustrated catalogue of nearly 200 antique musical instruments loaned by Paul de Wit to a Viennese exhibition, the text being given in German, French and English. Paul de Wit was founder and editor of the Zeitschrift fur Instrumentenbau, a viola da gamba player and one of the keenest and most successful 19th century collectors of obsolete instruments, who had already sold two previous collections to the Prussian Government to found the Berlin Academy of Music's collection. In the words of a contemporary reviewer this third collection included "many remarkable specimens of the keyboard kind, clavichords, spinets or virginals, and harpsichords, many of these being of great beauty and originality of decoration ; there are also Positive and Portable organs as well as Regals, those scarce instruments of which Herr de Wit has a large and a small specimen. As to lutes and viols and their kin there is all the keenest student may care to see." The illustrations - nearly 200 in all, with between 1 and 50 on each of 16 plates - are superb examples of the accuracy and beauty of representation achievable through chromolithographic reproduction of photographic images. The illustrations comprise: early keyboard instruments (plates 1 - 10), harps (plate 11), plucked instruments (plates 12 - 13), stringed bowed instruments (plate 14), brass, woodwind and percussion instruments (plates 15 - 16).         The Origin of Metallic Currency and Weight Standards

Cambridge at the University Press, England, 1892, Hardcover, Book Condition: Reading Copy, First EditionSize: 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall, 417 pages. Index. Appendices. Footnotes. List of sixty black and white illustrations. A rare surviving copy of this important reference, made all the more engaging by today's environment of competing fiat currency devaluations. "Hitherto Numismatists when stydying the Origines of Coinage had confined themselves to the materials presented to them in the earliest money of Lydia, Greece and Italy, and on the other hand the Metrologists had almost completely limited their range of observation to the systems of Babylon, Egypt, Greece and Rome. As the Comparative Method has yielded such excellent results in the study of other human institutions, I have endeavoured by its aid to get some new principles which may throw some fresh light on the first beginnings of monetary and weight systems." - from Preface. Attractive gilt decoration upon green front board. Legible gilt lettering upon backstrip. Average external soiling and wear. Several chips from and lengthy openings along backstrip which has become brittle with age. Narrow opening along most of front hinge. Back hinge open. Bookplate inconspicuously removed inside front board. Unmarked. A tender but worthy copy.
