Proof portrait wood engraving of Harriet Beecher Stowe, and artist's Autograph Letter, signed concerning it, with another engraving of unidentified man

n.p, 1892. (STOWE, HARRIET BEECHER) Stowe image 9-1/2 x 7-1/4 inches, 14 x 11 inches overall. . Stowe engraving with almost imperceptible tear without loss, others fine. Scribner's Magazine, February 1895, pp. 186-88 . Gustav Kruell (1843-1907) was born in Germany and established himself as an engraver in Stuttgart. He came to the US in 1873, and quickly obtained commissions from the leading illustrated periodicals. He fell under the artistic influence of the famed engraver W.J. Linton, with the result that his portraits took on a clarity and liveliness uncommon in his day. His most famous work is probably the Lincoln of 1891; the following year he produced the superb Stowe portrait offered here (Stowe died in 1896). His Autograph Letter, signed, written from East Orange, NJ to J.R. Mitchel conveying the proof, reads, "Your favor enclosing check if $15.00 for Portrait of Beecher Stowe came to me today--I send the same by express with this. I hope the picture will not disappoint you for I sought for no effect but tried to make every one see into this great woman who could [be?] so calm in a time of greatest excitements as only a true woman can do. Very truly yours, G. Kruell." Also included is a fine 5 x 7 proof portrait of an unidentified man--both it and the Stowe portrait are signed in the plate and in pencil below.         Scenes From the Chiushingura and the Story of Forty-Seven Ronin, Collotyes by K. Ogawa, Descriptive Text by James Murdoch

      K. Ogawa, Tokyo 1892 - Meiji 25 (1892), string tied, decorated cardboard covers, 17 black and white collotypes, 52 pp. Each plate is preceded by a blank tissue guard. The book recreates a very famous incident in 1701 in which Asano Naganori (Lord Asano) was required to commit harakiri. His forty-seven samurai bodyguards, then reduced to the status of ronin, or masterless samurai, took revenge two years later by assassinating Lord Kira Yoshinaka, the individual responsible for Naganori's death. The ronin were then required by the Shogun to commit harakiri and buried with their master. The 17 collotype plates depict key events and settings in the story. Images involving actual characters are reenacted for the photographs. ~ Condition. The book is in Good condition. The covers have light overall soiling and toning. There is a vertical crease on left side of the front cover. The outside corners of the covers (front and back) are dog-eared and some of the internal pages are also. The spine cover, which is seldom seen on these books, is present but loose in some places. There are two gouges on the back cover. On is 1+ inch long and extends through the colophon page and into plate XVI. The other is 3/4 an inch and does not extends into the colophon page. Internally there is scattered foxing but the image areas are clean. Despite the flaws, the book is in above average condition for this book. ~~ More information, to include digital pictures, available on request. ~~~ Bulky book and extra postage will apply.

Pride and Prejudice - Leather and gilt FINE BINDING

Roberts Brothers, Boston USA 1892 - A simply gorgeous two volume set, originally issued as a strictly limited edition of 250 copies in 1892, these two copies have been rebound at a later date and to a very high standard indeed. The elegant result magnifies the virtues. The leather spines which wrap around the front and back boards, have gilt titling, and five raised bands. The cover boards are in a hard grain brown cloth, with Jane Austen's signature in gilt on the front. The text blocks have been kept exactly as issued, which means the three edges are attractively untrimmed. The high quality hot pressed paper has taken the text cleanly, as befits the very limited print run of just 250 copies. The frontispiece used for volume one shows Elizabeth, Darcy, and Sir William, and volume two shows Elizabeth and Darcy walking together. Both are clean prints of etchings, and the plate mark shows clearly around them, with tissue guards and captions in red. The grading is Near Fine, but this is taking the age of the books into consideration. The corners of the cloth cover boards are a bit soft. A most attractive and enduring collectable, this beautiful set is bound well enough to last for generations, as befits an imperishable classic. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Humourist

London: John C. Nimmo,, 1892. A Collection of Entertaining Tales, Anecdotes, Epigrams, &c. 4 volumes octavo (194 × 142 mm) Early twentieth-century tan half morocco on matching linen boards by Bayntun, title gilt to spines, raised bands, French fillet panels to the compartments, single gilt rule spine and corner edges, top edges gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. Hand-coloured frontispiece, title-page vignette and 8 plates to each volume. A little rubbed at the extremities, head-caps chipping, minor repairs to volumes 1 & 2 but remains a pretty enough set. First thus, number 251 of an edition of 260. This presented to Harold Nicolson by Horace Rumbold in 1929, inked inscription to the first blank of volume I. Nicolson had served under Rumbold twice, the second occasion being in Berlin 1928, Nicolson resigned from the diplomatic service in September, 1929, and Rumbold retired in 1933. Nicolson described Rumbold in the following terms; "The eye-glass in his eye, the vagueness of response, even the half-opened mouth indicated an attitude of mind which the English could recognise as post-Etonian but which the unwary foreigner sometimes mistook for lack of alertness … he had merely trained himself to appear more English than any Englishman had ever seemed before. And if his manner ever misled a foreigner into underrating his intelligence, that foreigner was quickly disabused" (quoted in ODNB). An excellent association copy.

Codice Mendieta: Documentos Franciscanos Siglos XVI y XVII

Imprenta de Francisco Diaz de Leon, Mexico City 1892 - 2 volumes bound in one: xvi+280 pages; 280 pages. Octavo (9" x 5 3/4") bound in full leather with red and black labels on spine in gilt lettering. Nueva Coleccion de Documentos para la Historia de Mexico, volumes IV and V. From the library of George M Foster. Limited to 200 copies. 1st edition. The Codex Mendieta is a collection of documents and letters relating to the writings of Mendieta to his superiors in both the church and state. In volume two there is a discussion of the codex Tlatelolco. This is volumes IV and V of the five volume in the Neuva Coleccion de Documentos para la Historia de Mexico. Joaquín García Icazbalceta defined his primary role as "writing nothing new but gathering materials that others might do so." As a collector, bibliographer, and editor of historical and linguistic documents he received in his life-time and afterwards much well-derserved acclain for meticulously carrying out this important mission. His works have generally withstood the test of time, and are a modern point of departure for serious study of colonial Mexico. About 1849 Garcia Icazbalceta began to form a "Collection of Documents for the History of America," which eventually grew to 87 large volumes, each containing one or more copies of original manuscripts, some of the highest importance. Fortunately, after Garcia Icazbalceta's death his large manuscript collection and important library of 12,000 volumes remained relatively intact. The manuscript collection passed nearly complete by sale to the University of Texas Library in 1937. Condition: Two volumes wonderfully rebound in one volume else a very good to fine set of an extremely rare item. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Iola Leroy, or Shadows Uplifted

Philadelphia: Garrigues Brothers. 1892. First. First edition. Brown cloth gilt. Frontispiece portrait of the author (occasionally lacking). Introduction by William Still. A fine copy with just the slightest of bumping at the corners and hinge repaired, the gilt bright and unrubbed. Small stamp of the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society on first blank, and beneath that Inscribed by Harper in pencil: "C. Impey. Street Somerset 1893 from the Author (and Publisher W. Still)".The only novel by Harper, better known for her poetry and essays, this was long considered the first novel to be published by an African-American woman, until Henry Louis Gates, Jr. advanced the cause of Harriet E. Wilson's Our Nig (1859).Although this novel contains many conventional elements, it also concerns itself with the personal independence of women of color, and particularly of the race in general. The protagonist, the daughter of a wealthy white father, is unaware that her mother is not only mulatto, but also the property of the husband. Iola and her brother and sister lead lives of privilege in North Carolina and at an expensive boarding school until her father dies, when her uncle claims them as slaves. Soon liberated by the Union Army, she offers her services as a nurse, and attracts the attentions of a white doctor, who discovers she is of mixed race, and encourages her to "pass" for white, which she rejects, setting off to seek her parents accompanied by a light-skinned black doctor instead. Iola commits herself to the education and furtherance of her race, and particularly of the freed slave, but is especially adamant about maintaining her status as an employed woman, saying at one point: "I think that every woman should have some skill or art which would insure her at least a comfortable support. I believe there would be less unhappy marriages if labor were more honored among women." Iola is also strongly in support of the temperance movement and in the principles of the Women's Christian Temperance Union in particular. While the novel has a conventional ending -- Iola marries the black doctor -- she continues her educational endeavors and social work as a married woman. The inscription in this copy is to Catherine Impey (of Street Somerset) a British Quaker activist against racial discrimination who founded Britain's first anti-racist journal, Anti-Caste, in 1888. The journal focused largely on issues in America. In 1893, she formed The Society for the Recognition of the Universal Brotherhood of Man, with the American Ida B. Wells, who visited her in Britain to campaign against lynching. This is the first of only four 19th Century editions. In addition to this first edition, there was a second edition published by Garrigue Brothers in 1893; the third edition, published by James H. Earle, which is dated 1892, but is stated third edition, and was probably published after 1893; and a fourth edition, also published by Earle, in 1895. OCLC locates 28 copies of the first edition, a surprisingly large number, all but a handful are found in the libraries of traditionally black colleges, where they would have been of particular interest, and more readily available at an early date. However, the list of institutions that do not have a copy of the first edition is impressive. A single inferior copy at auction in the past 25 years. We have occasionally, if infrequently, seen copies of the later printings, this is the third copy of the first edition we've seen in 30 years; in beautiful condition, the only signed copy of which we are aware, and a pleasing association. .
