[cover title] Left by the Indians. Story of my life.

[copyright page: Mt. Vernon, IA: Hawk-eye Steam Print Square 24mo (13 cm; 5"). Front wrapper, [2] ff., 40 pp., port. leaf, blank leaf.. 1892] Howes tells us that “This is the only account by a survivor of the extreme hardships suffered by the [1860] Utter-Myers Overland Train,” and Smith adds that "Among overland disasters, [this tragedy was] equaled in horror only by that of the Donner party; cannibalism was resorted to in both cases."Fuller's account of the party of 44 that left Wisconsin in May 1860 heading for Oregon’s Willamette Valley is unstinting in its telling of attacks by a large party of Shoshone and Bannock along the Snake River, the rapine of the wolves afterwards, and the failure of those yet living to find food except the bodies of dead members of the party. Only 16 survived."It is at the request of many friends I consent to publish the story of my life. They have heard enough of what I have suffered by the Indians, to make them anxious to hear or rest the rest. To repeat the whole story to every individual that wants to hear it is an impossibility — hence I write that they may read for themselves" (preface). Yes, her autobiography does continue her life and travels after the massacre, but only to 1879. She died in either 1923 or 1924.There are two pages of portraits of Fuller's family as they looked in 1860: her mother, father, a baby, a brother and sister, and herself at 14 years. There is an additional full-page portrait of Fuller as she looked in 1892.Life-time published accounts by pioneer women in the Pacific Northwest are uncommon. Those detailing massacres and cannibalism even fewer. Publisher's green wrapper, wire stitched, as issued; lightly soiled. Small brown stain in foremargin of three final leaves. => A rather nice copy of a delicate publication.

Varones ilustres de la Compania de Jesus. Segunda edicion.

Bilbao, 1887-1892. - 9 volumes in-4. Sabin dit concernant la première édition: "This work having been published at different periods during the space almost a century, complete sets are excessively rare. The interest of the work is not inferior to its rarity as it contains accounts of many early voyages to the Indies not elsewhere to be fond" . Bon exemplaire. Palau, 191024-9. A SUPERB AND VERY EARLY LARGE-SIZE PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDY . . A complete, solid and very nice copy. . A superb and obscure work by Japan's leading photographer of the time. This work illustrates Japan's scenic beauty in and around the Hakone district, with nice images of the road to Miyanoshita & Kiga, Tono-sawa, gigantic cryptomeria trees at Ohirodani, the tea-house at Sengen-yama, Fujiiya Hotel, Sengen Yama, Haya-kawa &c. Around the base of Kamurigatake, NiNi-no-taira, Ojigoku, Kowakidani and the sulfur springs. * On March 11, 1691, Engelbert Kaempfer and his companions passed through Hakone or as he wrote it "Fakone," on their way from Nagasaki to the Shogun's Court at Yedo. With lovely photographic images of Mt. Fuji. A very special early resource. . Note: If you are interested in Kaempfer books please contact us as we have them in stock. * Extracted from Wikipedia, corrected & edited by us: Ogawa Kazumasa [1860-1929], first name known as Kazuma or Isshin, was a Japanese photographer, printer and publisher who pioneered in photomechanical printing and photography in the Meiji era Japan. * WHO WAS THE PHOTOGRAPHER OGAWA: . OGAWA Kazumasa was born in Saitama prefecture, in the Matsudaira Samurai clan. He started studying English and photography at the age of 15 under Yoshiwara Hideo, then in 1880 he moved to Tokyo in order to further hone his English language skills. One year later, Kazumasa was hired as an interpreter in the Yokohama Police Department, while learning photography from the celebrated Shimoka Renjo in Yokohama. . In 1882, he moved to Boston where he took courses in portrait photography and dry plate process. He also studied collotype printing in Albert Type Company. . Upon his return to Japan in 1884, he opened a photographic studio in Tokyo's Iidabashi, in Kojimachi, which was the first studio of this kind in Tokyo. Four years later, he established the Tsukiji Kampan Seizo Kaisha [Tsukiji dry plate manufacturing company], which manufactured dry plates for use by photographers. In 1889, he set up Japan's first collotype business, the Ogawa Shashin Seihan jo, also referred to as the K. Ogawa printing factory. In the same year, Kazumasa worked as an editor for Shashin Shimpo [The Photography Journal], the only photographic journal available at the time which he printed using the collotype printing process. He also printed KOKKA journal by the same method. . Ogawa Kazumasa was a founding member of the Japan Photographic Association [Nihon Shashin Kai], which gathered photography amateurs from all around Japan. In 1891 he was responsible for taking 100 pictures of Tokyo's most attractive geisha, to commemorate the opening of the Ryounkaku. . The contribution by Ogawa to Japanese photography is by and large the most important and fascinating of any Japanese photographer. *** REFERENCES: The following are some useful bibliographies to consult for more information on this album and Japanese early photography in general: * BENNETT, Terry.         Oriental scene.

No place, 1892. - Watercolour on paper, 290 x 460 mm, matted (600 x 398 mm). Beautiful orientalist watercolor, inscribed by the artist "à Monsieur Coullon, souvenir affectueux". Lacoste, a genre painter equally adept at landscapes and architecture, was a student of Rouillet, Cambon, and Cogniet. He exhibited at the Salon from 1839 to 1907, also drawing costumes for the various Parisian scenes, including for the Opéra from 1876 to 1885. His series of watercolours painted for Verdi's "Aida" in 1880 is remarkable; a design for "Ramses" is now kept at the Getty Museum. The present orientalist scene is typical of its age but distinguished by its large format and masterly quality. It shows a Middle Eastern oasis with Moorish-type buildings near a palm grove reflected in a waterhole, surrounded by eight characters in local costumes going about their lives: a man is perched on his camel; two men are wearing red hats; two women, possibly slaves, carry jugs on their heads. In the foreground, cargo unloaded from a camel suggests a Bedouin desert stopover. - Slight foxing and waterstaining to matte, not concerning the painting.

Bon exemplaire. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Various locations, 1892. Oblong octavo. Original brown morocco, cover gilt, sympathetically rebacked, a.e.g. Corners heavily worn, covers rubbed. Minor soiling and wear to mounts, but images clean. Very good. An interesting album of photographs compiled by one photographer - presumably an amateur - which includes scenes in Missouri, Illinois, and Florida. The images, which start with scenes of street illumination in St. Louis, include views of significant architectural monuments and parkland in major cities, steamers coaling and loading grain on the Illinois River, and other vernacular subjects such as farms, gardens, rail yards, and people. The album jumps around between states, showing areas around St. Louis, Kansas City, Allendale, and St. Joseph in Missouri; Peoria, Pullman, and Patoka in Illinois; two photographs in Patriot, Indiana, located just south of Cincinnati on the Kentucky border; and views in Palatka, Jacksonville, Tampa, and St. Augustine in Florida. A series of photographs centered on the McElaine farm near Allendale includes studies of horses, workers, "Moving an Old Frame House," "House Movers," "Temporary Quarters," and a portrait of a workman clinging to a pole in the air entitled "Chased by a Bull."

        King Poppy

Longmans 1892 - Presentation copy of King Poppy, with a letter from the first Earl's widow laid in on front flyleaf, and the letter's original envelope laid in on the front pastedown. The book itself is in very good condition, with foxing to front & rear endpapers but light scattered foxing elsewhere. A blank sheet immediately before the frontespiece appears to have been removed. The outer cover is very good, some marking to the spine as illustrated but otherwise signs of handling consistent with age; top edge of text block gilded. Supplied in loose acetate protective cover. The dedication reads: To W. P. Westell with kind regards and appreciation from the widow of the author Edith Lytton June 11. 1916. This is presumably W. Percival Westell, author of My Life as a Naturalist, which was published by Cecil, Palmer and Hayward in London in 1918, to which Lord Lytton had contributed the Introduction (written years earlier prior to his death in 1891). The letter pasted into King Poppy is a thank you by Lady Lytton to Westell for a copy of My Life as a Naturalist, and reads as follows: June 20 Evening My dear Mr. Westell I was most grateful for your letter of June 15. [We] have waited to thank you for it, until I learned that your lovely book had reached me. This morning it arrived and from a rapid glance this evening I can see that it is perfect - for every season of the year - then the sea treasures described - and the stars - of the names of which I always long to be reminded - are so well mapped out. I therefore look forward to many quiet readings and imaginary rambles, for alas I can't walk so far as I used to do. I am also very pleased by the kind inscription & personal touch marked by my Christian name introduced. So pray accept my sincere thanks and believe how much I shall appreciate your thoughts and descriptions in this fascinating volume. I need hardly say that Conny & Nurse had the first look through the book, & they were much excited. Each unfolded part of 18 sections measures 24.5 inches high by 74.5 inches wide, the entire map unfolds to eight feet two inches in height and six feet two inches wide. Title continues: Y De Los Paises Limtrofes. Development ofrailways in Argentina dates from 1857 and was mostly supported by private companies largely controlled in England, about 15% being owned and operated by the government. Produced following an investment crisis in 1890, this map may have been intended toencourage support of an already well developed transportation system carrying thepastoral and agricultural products of Argentina?s steadily developing export trade, which contributed greatly to maintaining the country?s economic stability. Besides showing railways, the large scale on which this map was produced allows acomprehensive view of the country and its physical peculiarities. Dry rivers, mountain peaks, saline lakes, central plateaus, the Gran Chaco, countless rivers? allareshown with the detail and elevations one expects from railroad survey expeditions. Stock#NS0156.

The Golden Legend. 3 volumes complete.

Upper Mall Hammersmith; The Kelmscott Press sold by Bernard Quaritch 15 Piccadilly 1892 - Three volumes 4to [text block 295 x 210mm], publisher's canvas (holland) backed pale blue paper covered boards, printed paper labels. Printed slip tipped-in on fly-leaf before half-title 'If this book be bound the edges of the leaves should only be TRIMMED, not cut. In no case should the book be pressed, as that would destro the "impression" of the type and thus injure the appearance of the printing. W. MORRIS.' VOLUME 1: xii [ii], 464pp. VOLUME 2: [ii], 465-864pp. VOLUME 3: [ii], 865-1286pp. One of 500 copies printed on hand-made paper; no copies were printed on vellum. Of the fifty-three books published by the press between 1891 and 1898 this was intended to be the first but, because of a delay caused by a problem with the paper size, it was the seventh issued. Sawyer & Darton, English Books 1475-1900: Morris 'christened the first fount the 'Golden', type, from The Golden Legend, for which work it was designed. The fount consists of eighty-one designs. The title and two woodcuts were designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Morris's old Oxford friend. It is one of the most handsome and desirable of the Kelmscott books. The Troy type [the second of four founts designed by Morris] was used to print the title labels, which are glued to the canvas backs.the first appearance of the type.' [See also Roderick Cave, 'The Private Press' for a good description of the origins of the press; William S. Peterson: A Bibliography of the Kelmscott Press, A7]. The canvas spines are very browned and splitting; hinges split, those to volumes 1 and 3 nearly broken; labels browned, chipped and split; text block edges browned; contents near fine. Two armorial bookplates on all volumes: on the front pastedowns that of Henry Martin Gibbs of Barrow Court, Somerset, dated 1891; on the front free endpapers that of Walter Henry James. Tipped-in on front fly-leaf volume 1 a cutting from the Sotheby auction catalogue for July 29th, 1957, lot 224 describing this book, The Property of the Rt. hon. Lord Northbourne, and a pencilled note in margin 'This copy'. Each volume now secure in a strong, well-made, if inelegant, drop-boxes, pale brown cloth, simple black leather lettering piece, gilt. A slightly corrected edition, described in some detail in a memoranda by the editor in volume 3, of Caxton's edition of 1483. The 'Golden Legend' was Caxton's magnum opus, a translation into English a French version of the 'Legenda Aurea' of de Voragine, Archbishop of Genoa. It consists of the lives of Saints together with much legendary matter plus Scripture. As the work had received a Papal blessing Caxton risked nothing by bringing out a translation. The introduction to the Holbein Society's 400th anniversary book on 'The Golden Legend' states: "We have seen that Caxton dare not print the Bible, with avowed intent; but under the guise of legendary stories, he smuggled into his book a great part of the text of the Sacred Writings. To such an extent has this been carried, that in the Caxton Celebration Catalogue.the Golden Legend was included in the list of Bibles; 'because', says Mr Henry Stevens, who had charge of that department, 'it contains a translation into English of nearly the whole of the Pentateuch, and a great part of the was no doubt read in churches, and though the text is mixed with much priestly gloss and dross, it nevertheless contains, in almost literal translation, a great portion of the Bible; and it became thus one of the principal instruments in preparing the way for the Reformation." Jahre 1462 'Die beiden Patrone des Frankfurter Domes'. Minim. Berieb an d. Carl Wolff (* 1. Januar 1860 in Elberfeld; † 25. Seine Lehrer waren dabei u.a. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Cloth a bit foxed and lightly soiled, otherwise a very good copy. First edition, clothbound issue, preceded by the copies in the two forms of printed wrappers. An important association copy, inscribed by Bierce on the half-title: "Lora Bierce from Ambrose." The recipient of the inscription was the wife of his brother Albert Bierce's son Carleton ("Carlt") Bierce, and the party to whom Bierce sent some of his final letters from Laredo, prior to his departure for Mexico (after which he disappeared). The most famous of those letters read, in part: "Good-bye - if you hear of me being stood up against a Mexican stone wall and shot to rags please know that I think that a pretty good way to depart this life. It beats old age, disease, or falling down the cellar stairs To be a Gringo in Mexico - ah, that is euthanasia!" BAL 1112. STARRETT A9. WRIGHT III:524.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1892. Thick octavo. Light tan cloth elaborately decorated in olive and black, spine lettered in gilt. Frontis and plates (by William Hole and W.L. Metcalf). Binding rubbed, with a few patches of edgewear, crown of spine slightly frayed, slight cracking between prelims (sewing still sound), some scattered foxing; a good, sound copy. Folding half-morocco slipcase. First US edition, following slightly the publication of the UK edition (July). This copies is inscribed by the authors on the half-title: "To Teuila Stewart [/] from [/] Robert Louis Stevenson [/] + [/] Lloyd Osbourne [/] August 5th 92," followed by two line (six words) possibly in Samoan. The inscription, except for Osbourne's signature, is in Stevenson's hand. The recipient, Isobel Stewart Osbourne (1858-1953), who was regularly referred to by herself, her family and her friends as "Teuila" (see her biographical sketch, RLS Museum, Online), was Stevenson's stepdaughter and Osbourne's brother. As Stevenson wrote in another context, "She is my wife's daughter, my secretary, my amanuensis, my woman-Friday on my desert island, my finder of things, my last assistance, my oasis, my staff of hope, my grove of peace, my anchor, my haven in a storm" - as quoted from "An Object of Pity" by Stuart Campbell, RLS IN LOVE (2009). Joseph Strong and Isobel joined Stevenson in Vailima in May 1891 (they were divorced in 1892), and among other responsibilities, she transcribed RLS's dictation when he was too ill to write. In this copy, in pencil, in the upper margin of the title, appears the comment "135,000 words, and in the upper margin of the first page of text, similarly appears the comment "containing 135,000 words." Both comments would seem to reflect an intimate acquaintance with the composition of the text. Lloyd Osbourne and Isobel wrote about their experiences in Samoa with Stevenson in MEMORIES OF VAILIMA (1902). BEINECKE 559.
