        King Poppy

Longmans 1892 - Presentation copy of King Poppy, with a letter from the first Earl's widow laid in on front flyleaf, and the letter's original envelope laid in on the front pastedown. The book itself is in very good condition, with foxing to front & rear endpapers but light scattered foxing elsewhere. A blank sheet immediately before the frontespiece appears to have been removed. The outer cover is very good, some marking to the spine as illustrated but otherwise signs of handling consistent with age; top edge of text block gilded. Supplied in loose acetate protective cover. The dedication reads: To W. P. Westell with kind regards and appreciation from the widow of the author Edith Lytton June 11. 1916. This is presumably W. Percival Westell, author of My Life as a Naturalist, which was published by Cecil, Palmer and Hayward in London in 1918, to which Lord Lytton had contributed the Introduction (written years earlier prior to his death in 1891). The letter pasted into King Poppy is a thank you by Lady Lytton to Westell for a copy of My Life as a Naturalist, and reads as follows: June 20 Evening My dear Mr. Westell I was most grateful for your letter of June 15. [We] have waited to thank you for it, until I learned that your lovely book had reached me. This morning it arrived and from a rapid glance this evening I can see that it is perfect - for every season of the year - then the sea treasures described - and the stars - of the names of which I always long to be reminded - are so well mapped out. I therefore look forward to many quiet readings and imaginary rambles, for alas I can't walk so far as I used to do. I am also very pleased by the kind inscription & personal touch marked by my Christian name introduced. So pray accept my sincere thanks and believe how much I shall appreciate your thoughts and descriptions in this fascinating volume. I need hardly say that Conny & Nurse had the first look through the book, & they were much excited. Believe me ever sincerely yrs Edith Lytton Language: eng [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Each part consists of a single horizontal fold and nine vertical folds and isattached to its covers at the lower left section. Each section measures 8.25 x 12.25 inches. Each unfolded part of 18 sections measures 24.5 inches high by 74.5 inches wide, the entire map unfolds to eight feet two inches in height and six feet two inches wide. Title continues: Y De Los Paises Limtrofes. The four parts are bound in embossed green cloth covers printed in gold. Despite a bit of old worming and minor stains, the map is handsome and brilliant. Scale: 1: 1,000,000. Oval stamp of the DFCN near the cartouche. The map encompasses approximately 41 South latitude to approx. 20 S. latitude, and approx. 53 West longitude to a little beyond 73 W. latitude. This includes Chile along its entire western border, in some cases to the Pacific, and parts of Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Railroad lines are shown as far south as Baha Nueva in Chubut on the east coast and a bit inland from Valdivia (Chile) in the west; in the north Asuncin is the farthest inland reach, and both completed and projected sections of the Transandine (Valparaiso toBuenos Aires) line are shown (the last tunnel was completed in 1909). Development ofrailways in Argentina dates from 1857 and was mostly supported by private companies largely controlled in England, about 15% being owned and operated by the government. Produced following an investment crisis in 1890, this map may have been intended toencourage support of an already well developed transportation system carrying thepastoral and agricultural products of Argentina?s steadily developing export trade, which contributed greatly to maintaining the country?s economic stability. Besides showing railways, the large scale on which this map was produced allows acomprehensive view of the country and its physical peculiarities. Dry rivers, mountain peaks, saline lakes, central plateaus, the Gran Chaco, countless rivers? allareshown with the detail and elevations one expects from railroad survey expeditions. Stock#NS0156.

The Golden Legend. 3 volumes complete.

Upper Mall Hammersmith; The Kelmscott Press sold by Bernard Quaritch 15 Piccadilly 1892 - Three volumes 4to [text block 295 x 210mm], publisher's canvas (holland) backed pale blue paper covered boards, printed paper labels. Printed slip tipped-in on fly-leaf before half-title 'If this book be bound the edges of the leaves should only be TRIMMED, not cut. In no case should the book be pressed, as that would destro the "impression" of the type and thus injure the appearance of the printing. W. MORRIS.' VOLUME 1: xii [ii], 464pp. VOLUME 2: [ii], 465-864pp. VOLUME 3: [ii], 865-1286pp. One of 500 copies printed on hand-made paper; no copies were printed on vellum. Of the fifty-three books published by the press between 1891 and 1898 this was intended to be the first but, because of a delay caused by a problem with the paper size, it was the seventh issued. Sawyer & Darton, English Books 1475-1900: Morris 'christened the first fount the 'Golden', type, from The Golden Legend, for which work it was designed. The fount consists of eighty-one designs. The title and two woodcuts were designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Morris's old Oxford friend. It is one of the most handsome and desirable of the Kelmscott books. The Troy type [the second of four founts designed by Morris] was used to print the title labels, which are glued to the canvas backs.the first appearance of the type.' [See also Roderick Cave, 'The Private Press' for a good description of the origins of the press; William S. Peterson: A Bibliography of the Kelmscott Press, A7]. The canvas spines are very browned and splitting; hinges split, those to volumes 1 and 3 nearly broken; labels browned, chipped and split; text block edges browned; contents near fine. Two armorial bookplates on all volumes: on the front pastedowns that of Henry Martin Gibbs of Barrow Court, Somerset, dated 1891; on the front free endpapers that of Walter Henry James. Tipped-in on front fly-leaf volume 1 a cutting from the Sotheby auction catalogue for July 29th, 1957, lot 224 describing this book, The Property of the Rt. hon. Lord Northbourne, and a pencilled note in margin 'This copy'. Each volume now secure in a strong, well-made, if inelegant, drop-boxes, pale brown cloth, simple black leather lettering piece, gilt. A slightly corrected edition, described in some detail in a memoranda by the editor in volume 3, of Caxton's edition of 1483. The 'Golden Legend' was Caxton's magnum opus, a translation into English a French version of the 'Legenda Aurea' of de Voragine, Archbishop of Genoa. It consists of the lives of Saints together with much legendary matter plus Scripture. As the work had received a Papal blessing Caxton risked nothing by bringing out a translation. The introduction to the Holbein Society's 400th anniversary book on 'The Golden Legend' states: "We have seen that Caxton dare not print the Bible, with avowed intent; but under the guise of legendary stories, he smuggled into his book a great part of the text of the Sacred Writings. To such an extent has this been carried, that in the Caxton Celebration Catalogue.the Golden Legend was included in the list of Bibles; 'because', says Mr Henry Stevens, who had charge of that department, 'it contains a translation into English of nearly the whole of the Pentateuch, and a great part of the gospels.it was no doubt read in churches, and though the text is mixed with much priestly gloss and dross, it nevertheless contains, in almost literal translation, a great portion of the Bible; and it became thus one of the principal instruments in preparing the way for the Reformation." Jahre 1462 'Die beiden Patrone des Frankfurter Domes'. Minim. Berieb an d. Carl Wolff (* 1. Januar 1860 in Elberfeld; † 25. Seine Lehrer waren dabei u.a. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE MONK AND THE HANGMAN'S DAUGHTER

Chicago: F.J. Schulte & Co., 1892. Gray cloth, printed in black. Frontis and plates by Theodor Hampe. Text printed in black and red. Cloth a bit foxed and lightly soiled, otherwise a very good copy. First edition, clothbound issue, preceded by the copies in the two forms of printed wrappers. An important association copy, inscribed by Bierce on the half-title: "Lora Bierce from Ambrose." The recipient of the inscription was the wife of his brother Albert Bierce's son Carleton ("Carlt") Bierce, and the party to whom Bierce sent some of his final letters from Laredo, prior to his departure for Mexico (after which he disappeared). The most famous of those letters read, in part: "Good-bye - if you hear of me being stood up against a Mexican stone wall and shot to rags please know that I think that a pretty good way to depart this life. It beats old age, disease, or falling down the cellar stairs To be a Gringo in Mexico - ah, that is euthanasia!" BAL 1112. STARRETT A9. WRIGHT III:524.

        THE WRECKER

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1892. Thick octavo. Light tan cloth elaborately decorated in olive and black, spine lettered in gilt. Frontis and plates (by William Hole and W.L. Metcalf). Binding rubbed, with a few patches of edgewear, crown of spine slightly frayed, slight cracking between prelims (sewing still sound), some scattered foxing; a good, sound copy. Folding half-morocco slipcase. First US edition, following slightly the publication of the UK edition (July). This copies is inscribed by the authors on the half-title: "To Teuila Stewart [/] from [/] Robert Louis Stevenson [/] + [/] Lloyd Osbourne [/] August 5th 92," followed by two line (six words) possibly in Samoan. The inscription, except for Osbourne's signature, is in Stevenson's hand. The recipient, Isobel Stewart Osbourne (1858-1953), who was regularly referred to by herself, her family and her friends as "Teuila" (see her biographical sketch, RLS Museum, Online), was Stevenson's stepdaughter and Osbourne's brother. As Stevenson wrote in another context, "She is my wife's daughter, my secretary, my amanuensis, my woman-Friday on my desert island, my finder of things, my last assistance, my oasis, my staff of hope, my grove of peace, my anchor, my haven in a storm" - as quoted from "An Object of Pity" by Stuart Campbell, RLS IN LOVE (2009). Joseph Strong and Isobel joined Stevenson in Vailima in May 1891 (they were divorced in 1892), and among other responsibilities, she transcribed RLS's dictation when he was too ill to write. In this copy, in pencil, in the upper margin of the title, appears the comment "135,000 words, and in the upper margin of the first page of text, similarly appears the comment "containing 135,000 words." Both comments would seem to reflect an intimate acquaintance with the composition of the text. Lloyd Osbourne and Isobel wrote about their experiences in Samoa with Stevenson in MEMORIES OF VAILIMA (1902). BEINECKE 559.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes

London: George Newnes. FIRST EDITION. Morocco by Bayntun. Fine. FIRST EDITION of Doyle's second, and arguably greatest, collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, with 90 illustrations by Sidney Paget. In stunning early morocco binding by George Bayntun. Beginning with "The Adventure of Silver Blaze", the eleven-story collection includes such classics as "The Gloria Scott" (Holmes's first case), "The Musgrave Ritual", and "The Greek Interpreter" (with the first appearance of Mycroft Holmes) before concluding with Watson's account of the apparent death of Holmes at Reichenbach Falls in "The Adventure of the Final Problem". The stories were originally printed in issues of the Strand Magazine from 1892-1893 before being collected in book form. The rich crushed morocco binding with gilt ruling and decorations is of the highest quality, with Bayntun's stamp: "Bayntun. Binder. Bath. Eng." George Bayntun died in 1940 and the firm began using the name "Bayntun-Riviere" in 1939.

London: George Newnes, 1894 [1893]. Quarto, early (pre-1939) blue crushed morocco by Bayntun, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With original cloth front cover and spine bound in. Superficial split to end of joints (all holding), mild uniform fading to spine. A beautiful copy.

[COMMERCIAL PROMOTIONAL ALBUM CONTAINING ADVERTISEMENTS AND NUMEROUS BEAUTIFUL CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS OF SPORTING SCENES, WOMEN'S DRESS, ORNITHOLOGICAL SCENES, AND MORE].

New Haven: George S. Lester, [n.d., ca. 1890s].. [22]pp. (versos only) plus twenty chromolithograph plates. Large folio. Original brown cloth stamped in black and gilt, rebacked, with original cloth laid down. Minor edge wear. Light thumb-soiling and occasional very minor foxing. Very good. An attractive collection of advertisements and chromolithographs from the late 19th century, the advertisements mostly related to Connecticut or Boston companies. The ads are mostly single- company, full-page ads, with a few featuring more than one company per page. Carriage makers, organ and piano manufacturers, chain makers, lithographers, and more are among the advertisers, with locations ranging from Boston to Bridgeport, New Haven, Middletown, Meriden, and other cities in Connecticut. The chromolithographs, which are most likely printed in Europe based on the style of the subjects and the printing, feature men in military dress, women in fine clothing, various sporting scenes, a few ornithological views, some rural scenes featuring children, and more. A bookplate from the New Haven publisher, George S. Lester, affixed to the front pastedown indicates the book was the property of a hotel "is presented for the guests of the house, and should not be removed from this room." "At different times book publishing has been very active.... George S. Lester and William Gay have also done much to make New Haven a center of book publishing" - Rockey. A handsomely-produced commercial promotional book, with gorgeous chromolithographed scenes. J.L. Rockey, ed., HISTORY OF NEW HAVEN COUNTY, CONNECTICUT (New York: W.W. Preston & Co., 1892), p.
