        The American Claimant.

New York: Charles L. Webster & Co., 1892 - Octavo (205 x 135 mm). Original green diagonally-ribbed cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt and illustrated in black. 8 pages of publisher's advertisements to rear. Joints and extremities rubbed with a few small sections of wear, spine faded, front inner hinge slightly tender, contents toned. A very good copy. Frontispiece and 25 line-drawings to the text by Dan Beard. Beard would go on to illustrate The £1,000,000 Bank-Note, Tom Sawyer Abroad and Following the Equator, and revelled in being known as "the Mark Twain of art", though after the turn of the century devoted himself mainly to organising youth development groups and was a founding member of the Boy Scouts of America. The American Claimant is notably uncommon in the original cloth. BAL 3434; for Beard see LeMaster, ed., The Routledge Encyclopaedia of Mark Twain, p. 64. [Attributes: First Edition]

Autograph letter signed; "H Bülow," to Hermann Wolff, September 13, 1892

      - Two and a half pages, on three sides of a bifolium, approx. 5 X 8 in. A substantial and somewhat agitated letter from the great conductor to the concert impresario. Hans von Bülow (1830 -1894) was perhaps the most renowned conductor in Germany in the nineteenth century, instrumental in establishing the prominence of Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, and Richard Strauss, among others. Hermann Wolff (1845-1902), the Jewish concert agent and impresario persuaded von Bülow to accept the position of principal conductor at the Berlin Philharmonic, helping to cement that orchestra's longterm reputation. A rectangular portion of a blank facet has been torn away; folded and spit at folds, with two old mends. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Autograph postcard signed; "Wilhelm Furtwängler," to Maria Proelss, December 27, 1931

St. Moritz. -. Two holes punched in left margin, where it was once preserved in a collector's binder, vertical crease, very good.. Written on one side of a plain postcard, addressed in another hand on the other side, approx. 4 X 6 in. A warm note from the great conductor, hoping for a meeting in Berlin, once he returns to Germany. Maria Proelss (1892-1962) was a pianist and painter, about whom Theodor Adorno said, upon her death, that "she played the piano most unconventionally: without all consideration, purely out of the need to realize the sense of the music . . . in stark contrast to the positivistic streamlined musicians who have made their way to the top in the last forty years."

        The Adventure of Silver Blaze

Strand Magazine, 1892 Quite possible the only surviving copy of the rare HARDCOVER edition of this historic publication, and possibly, of any single issue of the Strand Magazine containing a Sherlock Holmes story. It is the December, 1892 issue of the Strand Magazine, which contained the Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of Silver Blaze. The Silver Blaze is certainly the most famous story ever written about a race horse, and one of the greatest Sherlock Holmes stories. In this story, Holmes utters the infamous line referring to "the curious incident of the dog in the night-time," to which the Scotland Yard detective objects, "The dog did nothing in the night-time." And Holmes responds: "That was the curious incident." This is a special hardcover edition of the single issue, with a gold stamp marking the issue with a gold crown and the words "Royal Edition." In addition, the volume in inscribed by the author of the first article. Very good in cloth covers, comes in a custom-made slipcase.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Pierrot Lunaire, Rondels. Deutsch von Otto Erich Hartleben.

Autographiert bei A. Liebmann., Berlin 1892 - Berlin, Autographiert bei A. Liebmann. Diffraction of Cathode Rays by a Thin Film" (Thomson, Paget, Reid) in Nature, Vol. 119, No. 3007, June 18, 1927, p. 890 AND "The Diffraction of Cathode Rays by Thin Films of Platinum (Thomson) in Nature, Vol. 120, No. 3031, December 3, 1927, p. 802

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THOMSON & REID'S NOBEL PRIZE WINNING PAPERS "for the experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals" (Nobel Prize Portal). The experiments conducted here "beautifully confirmed the [de Broglie's] wave theory" (Lindau Nobel Laureate Portal). Sir George Paget Thomson was born in 1892, the son of the physicist Sir J. J. Thomson. Paget Thomson studied at Cambridge's Trinity College, later working for a year studying atomic structure with his father; this was followed by work at Cavendish Laboratory until WWI. Following a post at Cambridge, Paget Thomson became Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen. It is at Aberdeen that Paget Thomson began to carry out experiments revealing the phenomena of electron diffraction with thin metal foils and high-voltage electrons. In 1924, the de Broglie hypothesis argued that a wave must be associated with the motion of any material corpuscle. "Reasoning that the effect would be easier to analyze with a solid than with a gaseous target, Thomson asked one of his students, Alexander Reid, to modify an existing apparatus and investigate the scattering of a beam of electrons with energy in the keV range through this celluloid films at normal incidence" (Lindau). In the first paper offered here (June 1927), Reid and Paget Thomson describe "the rings formed when a beam of cathode rays was sent at normal incidence through a thin film of celluloid and struck a photograph plate placed some distance behind the film. These were attributed to a diffraction of the cathode rays by the film, the cathode rays behaving as waves of wave-length h/mv according to de Broglie's theory of wave mechanics, and regularities in the structure of the film, or in the size of the molecules, making it behave as a kind of diffraction grating" (Abstract). In the paper of 1927 December, Paget Thomson (working alone) confirmed and extended his experimentation "to films of gold, aluminium, and of an unknown (probably organic) substance. In particular, the relation that the size of the rings is in all cases inversely as the momentum of the cathode rays is fully confirmed, and the number and size of the rings correspond remarkably with what is to be expected from the known crystalline structure of gold and aluminium, using de Broglie's expression for the wave- length of the cathode rays" (Abstract). "Whereas his father had seen the electron as a particle (and won his Nobel Prize in the process), Paget Thomson demonstrated that it could be diffracted like a wave, a discovery proving the principle of wave-particle duality which had first been posited by de Broglie in the 1920s as what is often dubbed the de Broglie hypothesis" (Strickland, Creators of Quantum Physics, 180). CONDITION & DETAILS: Two issues in original wraps. London: Macmillan. 4to. (10.5 x 7.5 inches; 262 x 188mm). Ex-libris with stamps on front wraps; professionally rebacked at the spine (see scan).         La conquête du pain. Préface par Élisée Reclus.

Paris, Tresse & Stock, 1892. Small 8vo. Original printed red wrappers. A few tears and nicks to extremities. The extremely fragile spine miraculously preserved, very neatly restored. A very fine, completely uncut copy. XV, (1), 297, (1) pp. + (1, contents) f.. The very rare first edition of Kropotkin's main work, "The Conquest of Bread", the great constructivist work of the libertarian tradition and the greatest modern work of anarchism. By 1880, Kropotkin had broken with the Bakunist idea of remuneration for labour in the post-revolutionary society. While Bakunin and the Federalist wing of the First International suggested a period of economic transition between Capitalism and Libertarian Communism, Kropotkin believed it necessary to leap from one to the other, from day one of the revolution. Any retention of the wages system in whatever form, such as labour cheques or time coupons, would only result in further exploitation and injustice. The revolution has to consist in the belief that all things are the common inheritance of humanity and should also be held in common; therefore, Kropotkin states in his magnu opus, collectivists merely tinker with the wages system in stead of destroying it, and the only way forward is to get rid of it completely. Kroptkin's groundbreaking "The Conquest of Bread" constitutes a work of anarcho-communist economics and history rather than a mere text book on revolutionary organization. "[I]n "The Conquest of Bread", [h]e doesn't seem to see anarchism as a political ideology on a par with, say Marxism, but rather he sees it as a constantly present tendency within human groups. Anarchism, then, is more of an anthropological category than a political one for Kropotkin... He highlights events from the French revolution where associations of labourers sprang up to till the soil together. He looks at aspects of Russian and Swiss peasant communal land use as well as the English lifeboat crews who voluntarily aid seamen in distress. This is where Kropotkin's real worth is - in the field of history and ethics. Of course some of his historical conclusions can be criticised: medieval cities were not as democratic and peaceful as he would have us believe. But he did illuminate an aspect of human history which had been completely neglected. Academics of the nineteenth century were heavily under the influence of neo-Darwinist ideas which sought to justify both capitalism and imperialism. Kropotkin was one of the very first to attempt to refute the 'survival of the fittest' idea. The basic point that humanity has made most progress under conditions of co-operation runs through the length and breadth of "The Conquest of Bread".The book contains much of interest for present day libertarians. Kropotkin touches on "integral education", agricultural production in cities, international trade, the decentralisation of industry and much else of importance currently. It is, to reiterate, one of the great constructivist anarchist works". (Gary Heyter, A Review of Kropotkin's "The Conquest of Bread"). Prince Pyotr Alexeyevich Kropotkin (1842 -1921) was a Russian activist, scientist, and philosopher, who advocated decentralized government and anarchism. Kropotkin was a proponent of a communist society free from central government and based on voluntary associations between workers. He wrote many books, pamphlets and articles, the most prominent being his groundbreaking "The Conquest of Bread" from 1892. He also contributed the article on anarchism to the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition."The Conquest Of Bread" first appeared in Paris in 1892, after having been serialized in the anarchist journals "La Révolté" and "Le Révolte". After the appearance of the book, it became extremely influential and was serialized again, though only in part, between 1892 and 1894 in the London journal "Freedom". It quickly reached an extremely large audience and was translated an reprinted numerous times. It was translated into Norwegian already in 1898, and in Japanese in 1909."The Conquest of bread" came to play an enormous role in the modern development of anarchism and is the most significant modern work of the libertarian tradition
