La conquête du pain. Préface par Élisée Reclus.

Paris, Tresse & Stock, 1892. Small 8vo. Original printed red wrappers. A few tears and nicks to extremities. The extremely fragile spine miraculously preserved, very neatly restored. A very fine, completely uncut copy. XV, (1), 297, (1) pp. + (1, contents) f.. The very rare first edition of Kropotkin's main work, "The Conquest of Bread", the great constructivist work of the libertarian tradition and the greatest modern work of anarchism. By 1880, Kropotkin had broken with the Bakunist idea of remuneration for labour in the post-revolutionary society. While Bakunin and the Federalist wing of the First International suggested a period of economic transition between Capitalism and Libertarian Communism, Kropotkin believed it necessary to leap from one to the other, from day one of the revolution. Any retention of the wages system in whatever form, such as labour cheques or time coupons, would only result in further exploitation and injustice. The revolution has to consist in the belief that all things are the common inheritance of humanity and should also be held in common; therefore, Kropotkin states in his magnu opus, collectivists merely tinker with the wages system in stead of destroying it, and the only way forward is to get rid of it completely. Kroptkin's groundbreaking "The Conquest of Bread" constitutes a work of anarcho-communist economics and history rather than a mere text book on revolutionary organization. "[I]n "The Conquest of Bread", [h]e doesn't seem to see anarchism as a political ideology on a par with, say Marxism, but rather he sees it as a constantly present tendency within human groups. Anarchism, then, is more of an anthropological category than a political one for Kropotkin... He highlights events from the French revolution where associations of labourers sprang up to till the soil together. He looks at aspects of Russian and Swiss peasant communal land use as well as the English lifeboat crews who voluntarily aid seamen in distress. This is where Kropotkin's real worth is - in the field of history and ethics. Of course some of his historical conclusions can be criticised: medieval cities were not as democratic and peaceful as he would have us believe. But he did illuminate an aspect of human history which had been completely neglected. Academics of the nineteenth century were heavily under the influence of neo-Darwinist ideas which sought to justify both capitalism and imperialism. Kropotkin was one of the very first to attempt to refute the 'survival of the fittest' idea. The basic point that humanity has made most progress under conditions of co-operation runs through the length and breadth of "The Conquest of Bread".The book contains much of interest for present day libertarians. Kropotkin touches on "integral education", agricultural production in cities, international trade, the decentralisation of industry and much else of importance currently. It is, to reiterate, one of the great constructivist anarchist works". (Gary Heyter, A Review of Kropotkin's "The Conquest of Bread"). Prince Pyotr Alexeyevich Kropotkin (1842 -1921) was a Russian activist, scientist, and philosopher, who advocated decentralized government and anarchism. Kropotkin was a proponent of a communist society free from central government and based on voluntary associations between workers. He wrote many books, pamphlets and articles, the most prominent being his groundbreaking "The Conquest of Bread" from 1892. He also contributed the article on anarchism to the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition."The Conquest Of Bread" first appeared in Paris in 1892, after having been serialized in the anarchist journals "La Révolté" and "Le Révolte". After the appearance of the book, it became extremely influential and was serialized again, though only in part, between 1892 and 1894 in the London journal "Freedom". It quickly reached an extremely large audience and was translated an reprinted numerous times. It was translated into Norwegian already in 1898, and in Japanese in 1909."The Conquest of bread" came to play an enormous role in the modern development of anarchism and is the most significant modern work of the libertarian tradition

"Alfredo Leonardo Edel, semplicemente conosciuto come Alfredo Edel (Colorno, 15 maggio 1856 ? Gesammelte Abhandlungen

Autograph letter signed in full to arts administrator Richard Sternfeld

      - 3 pp. of a bifolium. 8vo (175 x 110 mm.). Dated Döbling [now part of Vienna], November 4, 1892. In black ink. In German (with translation). Wolf asks Sternfeld (who is not named in the letter but may be identified by circumstantial evidence) about the "popular concerts" series in Berlin, which Sternfeld had suggested as a venue for showcasing Wolf's music. He doubts whether the setting of these concerts was suited to the purpose:"Would you please, most esteemed [Sir], be so kind as to reveal to me the character of the so-called popular concerts in Berlin? Are your popular concerts such at which [the audience] is eating, drinking, and smoking? Of course such concerts would prohibit the performance of vocal music, and when you proposed a popular concert to me, you intended to perform my instrumental works only. In such a case a popular concert would not serve me well because, as you know, my specialty is vocal music. However, should it be otherwise and should the said concerts also include vocal music then I would of course prefer such a popular concert to one at the Singakademie, if only to save money. It also would appear that these popular concerts are held in the hall of the Philharmonic, which should not be underestimated."Creased at horizontal fold; short split to lower portion of central fold. "[Wolf] intensified the expressive vocabulary of the lied by means of extended tonality and post-Wagnerian declamation while retaining the defining elements of the song tradition he had inherited from Schubert and Schumann. Profoundly responsive to poetry, he incorporated detailed readings of his chosen poems in the compositional decisions he made about every aspect of song: harmonic nuances, tonal form, melodic design, vocal declamation, pianistic texture, the relationship of voice to piano, etc. Seeking an art ?written with blood';, he went below the surface of poetry - even where his musical purposes were inevitably distinct from the poet's - in order to recreate it in music of remarkable intensity, written, as he once proclaimed, for epicures, not amateurs." Eric Sams and Susan Youens in Grove Music Online.Richard Sternfeld (1858-1924) was a prominent arts administrator in Berlin at the time. A board member of the Wagner-Verein, he organized several performances of Wolf's works. The Berlin concert Wolf was planning at the time finally took place on January 8, 1894?but not as a "popular" concert. Siegfried Ochs, director of the Philharmonischer Chor, conducted some of Wolf';s choral-orchestral works.

George Newnes, London 1892 - Doyle, A(rthur) Conan. THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. London: George Newnes, 1892. FIRST EDITION, first issue (without the words "Southampton Street" on the front cover street sign). A VERY FINE COPY for this title, remarkably bright with its cloth unrubbed and its gilt virtually unblemished, in original publisher's light blue cloth over beveled boards, spine blocked and lettered in gilt and black, all edges gilt. The free endpapers are just lightly browned. With all one-hundred-and-four of Sidney Paget's famous illustrations. The notoriously fragile inner hinges show only the slightest separation of paper with no cracking or breaking. Although Sherlock Holmes first appeared in the initially unheralded novels A Study In Scarlet and The Sign Of Four, it was the wildly enthusiastic reception of this volume which, once and for all, made famous the most enduring fictional character of the Victorian era. THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES contains the first twelve of the fifty-six Sherlock Holmes stories eventually collected, including several of his most famous: "A Scandal In Bohemia," "The Five Orange Pips," The Man With The Twisted Lip," and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band." This is a CONDITION-CENSUS COPY; in 25 years, we've seen only two other examples in equally brilliant condition (and they both had dust jackets). Green & Gibson A10a. Housed in a wine-red vintage quarter-morocco slipcase. [TOGETHER WITH:] Doyle, A(rthur) Conan. THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. Illustrations by Sidney Paget. London: George Newnes, 1894. First Edition. AN EXCEEDINGLY FINE and remarkably bright copy in original publisher's dark blue cloth over beveled boards, spine blocked and lettered in gilt and black, all edges gilt. There is only the slightest touch of rub to the extremities, the free endpapers are just lightly browned, inner hinges expertly and invisibly restored to perfection, some minimal foxing. The ninety illustrations by Sidney Paget include the famous frontispiece: "The Death Of Sherlock Holmes. THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES contain Doyle's second set of twelve Sherlock Holmes short-stories, including "The Final Problem" which introduces Holmes' arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty. We've seen countless copies of this title in poor to average condition. This is about as good as it gets. Green & Gibson A10a. Housed in a wine-red vintage quarter-morocco slipcase. A perfectly matched set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Divan Japonais.

Poster for the Divan Japonais cabaret. Paris: Ancourt 1892. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1896. Plate no. 2.. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche

Chicago, Published By The Ritual Committee 1892 - Period Limp Leather binding (ironically with David Einhorn listed on the front cover as the author!), 12mo, 260, 140 pages. The scarce true first edition, quickly recalled after publication by the Reform movement because of opposition led by the Einhorn wing. "Rabbi Wise's intent notwithstanding, Minhag America was not universally accepted. Neither was the first draft of the Union Prayer Book (UPB), the prayer book which the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) planned to publish based on Minhag America. For by the time the CCAR was ready to release the Union Prayer Book in 1892, a more radically Reform wing, led by Rabbi David Einhorn of Baltimore, had the votes to change the CCAR's direction away from its centrist origins. The 1892 version of the UPB was actually recalled, at considerable expense; its replacement, published in 1895 as the ‘first edition’ of theUnion Prayer Book, was more in keeping with the tenets of Classical Reform" (Stevens, in Reform Judaism, 2006)]. Hague (1840-1917), United States geologist did many geological surveys in the U.S., of which the best known was that for Yellowstone National Park. He also had assignments in China and Guatemala. He was member of scientific societies both in the United States and Europe, and in 1885 was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. ". The summer and autumn of 1880 were spent by Mr. Hague in the field study of the Eureka district, Nevada. His assistants were Charles D. Walcott, fresh from the Grand Canyon of the Colorado, and J. P. Iddings . In his report on the Eureka district, published in 1892, he recognizes the fact that all the varieties of volcanic rocks in the district pass by insensible gradations` from one extreme of composition to the other."         Uncle Tom's Cabin.

      - Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1892. 2 vols., 8vo, lviii, 309; ix, 382 pp. Signed on the title page of Volume I by the author, and with lengthy autograph quotations signed tipped to the half-title pages of both volumes, each dated October 17, 1894. Full brown suede, decorative stamp and title on all four covers, gilt lettering on backstrip, green silk doublures, gilt top. Handsome volumes with minor wear to the backstrip crowns and feet and one or two marks on the suede. The Riverside Press large paper edition, number 246 of 250, illustrated by E. W. Kemble; a late but magnificent edition of this work of tremendous historical significance. The elderly author shows a flash of her old industriousness in the full page inscription in Volume I: "Not one throb of anguish not one tear of the oppressed is forgotten by the Man of Sorrows the Lord of Glory. In His generous patient bosom he bears the anguish of a world", and in Volume II where she quotes from Uncle Tom's death scene: "Oh Mas'r George ye' are too late. The Lord's bought me, and is going to take me home and I long to go. Heaven is better than Kintuck."Both volumes are also inscribed "Written for Mr. W. H. Cathcart." and signed and dated in full, and inserted in Volume I is an ALS by Stowe's daughter, Miss H. B. Stowe, 4 pages, 8vo, Hartford, Oct. 17, 1894. ". . . I wished my mother to write in them for you if possible. But writing for her is such an effort now . . . [I] only ask it of her very occasionally . . . I have had her write an extract for each volume on separate paper. I did not venture to have her write in the books, for fear of defacing them . . . I have had her attempt two or three times to write for you but without success until to day, when what she has written is quite as good as we can ever expect from her again. . .". Only two copies are recorded at auction with inscriptions by Stowe from the text, neither having two inscriptions. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Instructions for the Guidance of Her Majesty's Ships of War Employed in the Suppression of the Slave Trade.

London: for Her Majesty's Stationery Office by Harrison and Sons,, 1892. 2 volumes, octavo (236 × 150 mm). Contemporary black half calf; dark blue cloth sides, vol. I morocco-grain and vol. II watered; spines gilt in compartments, raised bands, buff endpapers, edges speckled red. Occasional blind-stamps of the Barbados Corporation. Slightly rubbed overall, extremities bumped, vol. II sunned along head of front board, spotting to endleaves of vol. I, a few pages finger-marked in the margins not affecting text. A very good copy. Rare first edition of this handbook for British sailors, published in light of the Brussels Anti-Slavery Conference of 1889-1890 and in the same year as the Exclusive Agreement, the last in a series of 19th-century treaties agreed between the various Gulf shaykhdoms and the British, for whom the suppression of slavery and piracy provided a useful pretext for the protection of Indian shipping routes. Reproduced here in full are the texts in each treaty signed between the United Kingdom and the Gulf shaykhdoms from 1820 to 1847. The first agreement is the General Treaty with the Friendly Arabs, signed at Ra's al-Khaymah in 1820 (p. 144). Arab signatories include "Sheik Shakbool", that is Tahnun b. Shakhbut, shaykh of the Bani Yas and ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1818 to 1833, "Sultan bin Sugger", or Sultan bin Saqr al-Qasimi, ruler of Sharjah, and the "Sheik of Dubey", who in later agreements is named explicitly as Maktum b. Bati, who announced the independence of Dubai from Abu Dhabi in 1833 and founded the Maktum dynasty. The treaty binds the Arab shaykhdoms to aid the British against piracy in the Gulf, illustrating that the British, despite their naval supremacy, found their interests genuinely threatened by the activities of Arab sailors in the region. A further set of agreements, signed in 1838, with the chief of Abu Dhabi now known as "Khaleefa ben Shakbool", gives the British the right to detain and search any ships entering their ports which are suspected of carrying slaves. The final set of treaties, agreed with the various Gulf shaykhs over the course of 1847, including the chief of Bahrain, Muhammad b. Khalifah b. Subman, gives licence to British cruisers to seize any ships suspected of involvement in the slave trade. A rare and valuable source for the emergence of the modern Gulf states, this one of 500 copies printed, a printed issue-slip tipped in at the title page of volume I appearing to indicate that a maximum of 250 copies were actually issued in the first instance, with just six copies now traced in libraries worldwide.

1892. Edited by H.G.O. Blake. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1892. Original dark green cloth with facsimile signature in gilt, beveled. First Edition, which consisted of only 1020 copies (Borst says there were only 500, but Blanck's figure is more likely). This was the last of Thoreau's four "seasons" to be posthumously published from his journal: EARLY SPRING had come out in 1881, followed by SUMMER in 1884; curiously, WINTER came next, in 1888. Even using Blanck's larger number of copies, AUTUMN is one of the two scarcest (EARLY SPRING consisted of 1018 copies, while the other two consisted of 1260 and 1550 respectively).~This is a bright copy with scarcely any wear -- fine except for a bit of very faint speckling of the cloth (as is often the case). Borst A11.1.a; Blanck 20130.
