        Handbuch der Ohrenheilkunde. 2 Bde.

      - Leipzig, Verlag von F.C.W. Vogel, 1892, 8°, VI, (2), 714 pp.; (8), 915, (1) pp., 310 Abbildungen im Text, 2 feine Halbledereinbände. Erste Auflage! Seven Years in the Soudan:

London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company,, 1892. being a record of Explorations, Adventures, and Campaigns against the Arab Slave Hunters. Collected and Edited by his Son Felix Gessi. Octavo. Original dark red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt and ruled in black, pale yellow surface-paper endpapers. Portrait frontispiece of Gessi from a photograph, 22 plates (2 double-page, largely from wood-engravings), illustrations in the text, folding coloured campaign map. Just a little rubbed, spine slightly sunned, a scatter of pale foxing, mainly front and back, a very good copy. First edition in English, published just a year after its Milan publication, and including letters "which do not appear in the Italian edition" (Note by the Translators); uncommon. In 1877 General Gordon was appointed as Governor of Sudan and he immediately made preparations to move against the thriving slave trade based at Bahr el Ghazal (now in South Sudan) and it's leader Al-Zubayr Rahma Mansur, known as the "Black Pasha". After various manoeuvrings the latter was detained in Cairo and his son Suleiman, in accordance with his father's wishes, started an insurrection, raising 6,000 troops and conducting large scale raids. Gordon instructed his right-hand man, the Italian soldier and explorer, Romolo Gessi, also called Gessi Pasha (1831-81), to crush the insurrection. The multi-lingual Gessi had served originally as a translator with Gordon during the Crimean War. Following his campaign against the slavers, for which he earned the title of "Il Flagello degli schiavisti" (The Scourge of the slavers), Gessi became Governor of Bahr-el-Ghazal.

        The American Claimant.

New York: Charles L. Webster & Co., 1892 - Octavo (205 x 135 mm). Original green diagonally-ribbed cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt and illustrated in black. 8 pages of publisher's advertisements to rear. Joints and extremities rubbed with a few small sections of wear, spine faded, front inner hinge slightly tender, contents toned. A very good copy. Frontispiece and 25 line-drawings to the text by Dan Beard. First edition, the illustrator's personal copy, expansively inscribed by him "Dan Beard [indicating arrow] His mark" on the front pastedown. The American Claimant was the second Twain novel illustrated by Beard. Twain first noticed Beard's drawings in Cosmopolitan magazine and eagerly commissioned him to illustrate A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889): he was so convinced of the artist's talent that he gave him free rein to interpret the text as he pleased. Beard would go on to illustrate The £1,000,000 Bank-Note, Tom Sawyer Abroad and Following the Equator, and revelled in being known as "the Mark Twain of art", though after the turn of the century devoted himself mainly to organising youth development groups and was a founding member of the Boy Scouts of America. The American Claimant is notably uncommon in the original cloth. BAL 3434; for Beard see LeMaster, ed., The Routledge Encyclopaedia of Mark Twain, p. 64. [Attributes: First Edition]

Autograph letter signed; "H Bülow," to Hermann Wolff, September 13, 1892

      - Two and a half pages, on three sides of a bifolium, approx. 5 X 8 in. A substantial and somewhat agitated letter from the great conductor to the concert impresario. Hans von Bülow (1830 -1894) was perhaps the most renowned conductor in Germany in the nineteenth century, instrumental in establishing the prominence of Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, and Richard Strauss, among others. Hermann Wolff (1845-1902), the Jewish concert agent and impresario persuaded von Bülow to accept the position of principal conductor at the Berlin Philharmonic, helping to cement that orchestra's longterm reputation. A rectangular portion of a blank facet has been torn away; folded and spit at folds, with two old mends. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Autograph postcard signed; "Wilhelm Furtwängler," to Maria Proelss, December 27, 1931

St. Moritz. -. Two holes punched in left margin, where it was once preserved in a collector's binder, vertical crease, very good.. Written on one side of a plain postcard, addressed in another hand on the other side, approx. 4 X 6 in. A warm note from the great conductor, hoping for a meeting in Berlin, once he returns to Germany. Maria Proelss (1892-1962) was a pianist and painter, about whom Theodor Adorno said, upon her death, that "she played the piano most unconventionally: without all consideration, purely out of the need to realize the sense of the music . . . in stark contrast to the positivistic streamlined musicians who have made their way to the top in the last forty years."
