Cf. Jacques Lacan, Séminaire Les formations de l'inconscient , 1957-1958 (passim). (Ellenberger, Découverte de l inconscient , p.628. Heirs of Hippocrates, n°2188. P. Morel, Dict. Dr. Albert Leffingwell
1891-1914. Dr. Leffingwell joined the anti-vivisection movement in the 1880s: protesting against the use of live animal (and human) subjects for medical testing. He and his fellow activists worked tirelessly to gain public support: distributing educational pamphlets and submitting articles that called attention to doctors and educators who tried to defend the practice. His collection of anti-vivisection material is the result of his years of activism, and has examples of a wide variety of pamphlets, newspaper articles, and items from a wide variety of anti-vivisection organizations across the country between 1891 and 1914. 1. American Humane Society: sixteen (16) items – Formed in 1877 as the “International Humane Association,” then changed to “American Humane Society” in 1878, the American Humane Society is dedicated to the safety and welfare of animals. One of the larger organizations involved in the animal vivisection debate, the Society published many anti-vivisection pamphlets, leaflets, and books, some of which Dr. Leffingwell himself wrote. This organization exists to this day, under the name “American Humane,” and continues to champion animal rights. -Thirteen (13) different pamphlets and leaflets. Six items are booklets with 12 or more pages, the majority of which are published by Leffingwell himself. Titles include “Scientific Chicanery: Does it Pay?”, “The Starvation of Cattle on the Western Plains, “and “Is Vivisection Painful?”, among others. Pamphlets and leaflets are primarily devoted to educating the reader on the subject of vivisection in school, how pa … [Click Below for Full Description]

A Member of the Company [Frederick Daniel

Frederick Daniel's Richmond Howitzers in the War is described in the Nevins bibliography as "a strictly military history of one of the Confederacy's most famous batteries; a few personal insights appear amid the flood of facts." Stanley for the relief of Emin Pasha. During this time, Casati also explored the region and made important discoveries in the Welle basin of modern north-east Zaire. These were not without personal risk to himself and his account contains details of his imprisonment at the command of King Chua in Unyoro, condemnation to death and eventual escape. 1891. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr [Manuscrit - Afrique] Marius Perret (1851-1900), En Colonne au Sénégal. [ca.1891], in-8, 78-3p.

Her sweet depictions of children perfectly capture the playfulness and charm of Mother Goose; each verse has its own colour illustration, with the text printed in calligraphic lettering. The beautiful, soft colours and contours of the illustrations create a unique reading of these beloved nursery rhymes. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter green cloth with light green paper boards, gilt lettering and colour illustrations by Maud Humphrey on the front and rear boards, frontispiece a colour illustration by Humphrey, featuring Little Bo Peep, title page with lettering in brown, blue, and pink with colour illustration, pink and blue decorative initial capitals throughout, text printed in brown calligraphic script, full-colour illustrations by Maud Humphrey throughout, printed on the rectos only except for the frontispiece; quarto size (11" by 9.25"), 46 unnumbered pages. ___CONDITION: Volume is better than very good, with c … [Click Below for Full Description]

THE designer, in the projection of this work, had in view a volume which should give the country, at an important time in its industrial affairs, some idea of the relation which Newark bears to the manufacturing world. The Columbian World's Fair was then being actively canvassed, and it was thought' essential that the volume should be in time for that important industrial event.A Newark mechanic himself, he felt a personal pride in designing and producing something that would bear inspection and warrant approval. How well he has succeeded must be left to the judgment of the manufacturers of Newark, and those allied with her industries. Fairhaven Land Company.
San Francisco: Elliot Publishing Company, 1891. San Francisco:: Elliot Publishing Company,, 1891.. First printing. Very Good. Original Lithotint. Folio (41.75 x 27.75 inches). Very Good Condition. Professionally restored. Rebacked on Rice Paper. A large handsome depiction of this coastal Washington Boom Town laid out on the shores of Bellingham Bay, and a particularly compelling example of the promotional power of the bird's eye view. It shows the town already much developed, but with many choice lots still unoccupied. A railroad line runs along the waterfront, the bay is busy with steam vessels, and a lumber mill and stands of conifers at the edge of town carry the suggestion of a great natural resource nearby. Fairhaven failed in its bid against Seattle to become the commercial hub of Washington, joining with Sehome, Whatcom, and Bellingham to form the city of Bellingham shortly after 1900. SIDGWICK, Henry.
London: Macmillan and Co., 1891. Octavo. Original red-brown pebble-grain cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, covers ruled in blind, black coated endpapers. With an autograph postcard, signed by Sidgwick, printed in red on buff card. Spine ends and corners bumped and rubbed, joints rubbed, and boards a little scuffed, front hinge cracked but firm, contents occasionally faintly spotted, overall a bright, clean copy. The postcard creased but otherwise in very good condition. First edition, with an autograph postcard from Sidgwick to the Scottish physician Donald MacAlister laid in, postmarked from the year of publication, 15 August 1891, and sent from Zermatt. Mailed to MacAlister at his St John's College, Cambridge address, Sidgwick writes: "It was stupid of me to omit to say that I should be in Switzerland at the launch-time: I hope everything went off well. H. Sidgwick". The event to which Sidgwick refers is unknown. As students, both Sidgwick and MacAlister were members of the highly selective Cambridge Apostles society, though at different times; the former was invited to join in 1857, and the latter was a member from 1876 to 1882. The weekly meetings of the Apostles and the friendships that stemmed from them constituted a formative part of Sidgwick's career: "It was these gatherings rather than his formal education that revealed to Sidgwick his true vocation, which he later characterized simply as 'thought exercised on the central problems of human life' (Sidgwick and Sidgwick, 35)" (ODNB).
His collection of anti-vivisection material is the result of his years of activism, and has examples of a wide variety of pamphlets, newspaper articles, and items from a wide variety of anti-vivisection organizations across the country between 1891 and 1914. 1. Richard Bowdler Sharpe & John Gould, William Hart
London, 1891. This stunning hand-colored folio lithograph is from "Monograph of the Paradiseidae, or Birds of Paradise and Ptilonorhynchidae, and Bower-Birds" by Richard Bowdler Sharpe. The work was published in London by Taylor & Francis for Henry Sotheran & Co between 1891 and 1898. The "Birds of Paradise" was the idea of John Gould's but completed after his death by Sharpe. The plates were predominantly drawn by William Matthew Hart, John Gould, and John Gerard Keulemans. It was the first monograph devoted to the remarkable birds of paradise and the "last of the fine bird books" (Fine Bird Books p.107) --- The remarkable-looking Birds of Paradise have captivated western science since Magellan first brought back a skin of such a creature in 1522. The skins, highly prized by East Indian natives, was given by the ruler of Batchian (in the Mollucas) as a gift to the King of Spain. The legs and wings of the bird, however, had been removed when skinned, presumably to better show its impressive plumage. When asked why the bird had no wings or feet, the natives replied that none were needed as the bird simply floated in its heavenly paradise. Thus, the earliest descriptions of the species, and indeed even its scientific naming by Linnaeus in the 18th century as Paradisaea apoda (legless bird of paradise), perpetuated that myth. Due to the remote nature of their rain forest habitat in New Guinea, it was not until the mid-19th century that these remarkable birds were first scientifically observed and accurately described. --- Gould had intended to publish the first monograph devot … [Click Below for Full Description]
