1891. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr [Manuscrit - Afrique] Marius Perret (1851-1900), En Colonne au Sénégal. [ca.1891], in-8, 78-3p.

[Chile].
Rare, Detailed Look at a South American Revolution[Chile].The Chilean Revolution of 1891 [Large Archive of 145 Broadsides, Broadsheets, and Revolutionary Periodicals].1891. [303] pp. 5.5 x 7.5 inches to 21 x 29 inches. Overall very good, but varies from fair to fine, most somewhat browned, larger sheets with edge tears, a few sheets with a few letters missing, one image torn through, a few with faint print, a few with ragged edges. Item #44239 Despite becoming one third larger in 1883 and much richer with its victory over Peru and Bolivia, Chile could not use its wealth and lavish public spending to insure against civil unrest. A combination of secular and religious battles and conservative versus liberal thinking came to a head in 1891, when Manuel Balmaceda, who had succeeded Santa Maria as president in 1886, refused to share power and patronage with both the opposition and members of his own party, who became divided over Balmaceda's attempt to select his successor. When the Chilean Congress refused to approve Balmaceda's budget for 1891 unless he formed a cabinet with their approval, he unilaterally declared he would use the prior year's budget for 1891. The congressionalists rebelled, backed by the powerful Chilean navy, land owners, and large foreign enterprises, established a government in the port of Iquique, and with better leadership and easy access to capital, defeated the loyalist army at Placilla and Concon. Balmaceda fled to the Argentine embassy for safety. The day after his term officially expired, he committed suicide. This collection contains rare "street" … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York: Croscup & Sterling, 1891. When ordering from the US, parcels may be subject to import tax and duty charges, which the buyer is responsible to pay. This is the Croscup & Sterling Brampton Edition, limited to 250 sets, of which this is (consistently) numbered 173, of The Diary of Samuel Pepys, M. A., F. R. S., edited, with additions by Henry B. Wheatley. This is the complete set of 18 volumes, in very good condition, with minor flaws, but with no significant defects. The publishing dates are from 1891 to 1899. The covers (app. 5.5" x 7.75"), leather spines with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering and decorations, have straight and securely attached spines. There is shallow wear to some top and bottom edges, and there is slight wear to the hinges, but all front and back covers are secure. The boards, marbled paper surfaces with leather outside corners, have several scuffs, though most have few or no scuffs. There are no prominent stains. There is occasional shallow edge wear, but no cuts into the boards. The insides are almost uniformly clean. I've found a small number of pages with light stains or slight waffling, but almost all pages have neither. I've found only one corner crease. The only tears are to two of the fold-out maps, which have shallow edge tears (see photo). The bindings are in good condition, with one loose page, a multi-paneled map, which is otherwise in good condition. There are no stamps or other attachments to the marbled inside cover spreads or elsewhere. I've found no writing or other notations. The gilt page tops are faded, but with no tears or dink … [Click Below for Full Description]

Samuel Pepys
New York: Croscup & Sterling, 1891. The covers (app. 5.5" x 7.75"), leather spines with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering and decorations, are all straight and well-attached. There is shallow wear to some top and bottom edges, and there is slight wear to the hinges, but all covers, front and back, are secure. The boards, marbled paper surfaces except at the outside corners, with are leather, have several scuffs, although most are not notably scuffed. There are no prominent stains. There is occasional slight edge wear, but no cuts into the boards. The insides are almost uniformly clean. I've found a small number of pages with light stains or slight waffling, but almost all pages have neither. I've found only one corner crease. The only tears are to two of the fold-out maps, which have shallow edge tears. The bindings are in good condition, with one loose page, a multi-paneled map, which has no tears, fade or creases. There are no stamps or other attachments to the marbled inside cover spreads or elsewhere. There is shallow wear to some top and bottom edges, and there is slight … [Click Below for Full Description]

Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle - A Study in Scarlet - 1891 - First Illustrated Edition Published in 1891. Third English Edition, being the first fully illustrated edition. 8vo., pp. 224 + (24) catalogue. Printed on high quality paper. Bound in publisher's quarter scarlet cloth, gilt titles to spine, beige buckram boards titled in red, patterned end-papers. With several black and white in-text and full page illustrations. A very good copy with cracks to gutters. John Maynard Keynes' copy. Some staining and browning to the spine. A little staining to the boards and wear to the edges. A very presentable copy indeed. The second edition has a printed leaf noting the edition as the 'Third Edition, Illustrated'. This is due to Beeton's Annual is listed as the first edition, therefore the 'first' edition of 1888 becomes their 'Second edition' and the second becomes the 'third'. The bibliography as set out above is correct; the Beeton 'edition' being an appearance, and not the first edition in bookform. The same rule applies to other Sherlockian titles such as 'The Sign of Four'. ___________________________________________ JOHN ATKINSON BOOKS is a full-time professional bookseller in Ripon, North Yorkshire.
