(MASSACHUSETTS TRAVEL DIARY & PHOTO ALBUM)
(MASSACHUSETTS JOURNEY DIARY AND PHOTOGRAPHY ALBUM). Book. 115pg. 1891. Massachusetts. A travel journal and photography album entitled "Coaching Trip June 5th to 20th, 1891". There are typewritten notes about a trip from Malden, Massachusetts west to the Berkshires and across the Hudson River to West Point, and then back to Boston. There are almost a hundred accompanying photographs of the people, scenery and activities. The journal concerns the travels of "Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Sawyer, Miss Converse, Miss Estabrook, Captain H.E. [Harry Elisha] Converse and Messrs G.S. Stockwell, J.E. Cochrane and P.W. Sprague" (page 91). The scrapbook begins with "Coaching Trip June 5th to 20th, 1891. M.B.S., M.C.P. and the scribe meet at the B. & M. [Boston and Maine Railroad] Station in Malden waiting to be joined by F.E.C. and E.A.E. for the 4:10 train to Boston. We wish we had a photograph of the baggage for we are sure it would be interesting as a souvenir. Bags, boxes, shawl straps, kodaks, banjo, umbrellas, etc. are transported across Boston to the B. & A. Station, while the ladies start for Young's Hotel, stopping by the way to purchase finery for Dennis and James. F.E.C. orders dinner, and as time is limited thoughtfully orders Broiled Chicken...Dinner is served in Private Parlors - It consists of Milk and crackers. This being insufficient for the insatiable J.E.C. and F.E. another dinner is ordered for them but the report comes back that fire has gone out...". The ride continues west, seemingly along the path of the modern State Route 2 (aka the Mohawk Trail): "...notwit … [Click Below for Full Description]

DOYLE, ARTHUR CONAN] - George Newnes (Ed.)
London: George Newnes, 1891. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1891, 1892, 1893, 1891. First Edition. Octavo. Original Cloth. Very Good 5 volumes, [Vols. II - VI], in the original light blue cloth with the illustration in black looking down London's Strand, with the title letters suspended on telegraph wires by the Victorian artist and designer George Charles Haité. The initial cover [1891] features a corner plaque showing the name of Burleigh Street, home to the magazine's original offices. The lettering on the plaque in Haité's design was later changed [1892] when Newnes moved to the adjacent address of Southampton Street. Vol. II [July - Dec. 1891] and Vol. III [Jan. - June 1892] contain 12 short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, these were eventually collected by Newnes and published in October 1892 as "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". Vol. IV [July - Dec. 1892], Vol. V [Jan. - June 1893], and Vol. VI [July to Dec, 1893] contain the next 12 stories culminating with 'The Adventure of the Final Problem', where Doyle decided to kill off Holmes. These were collected and published by Newnes in 1894 and published as "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes". However, the first London edition did not include the story, 'The Cardboard Box' as it involves adultery, and was felt to be too scandalous for young readers. All 24 stories are illustrated by Sidney Paget. Includes many first appearances of stories by writers such as Bret Harte, Walter Besant, Rudyard Kipling, Grant Allen, Dick Donovan, first English translation of Jules Verne, 'Zig-Zags at the Zoo' by Arthur Morrison, trans … [Click Below for Full Description]

LUCAS (Édouard)
Paris, Gauthier-Villars. [Click Below for Full Description]

Black, Henry
St. Paul: 1891. So you know an attorney who just settled a big case for you, kept a friend out of jail, or otherwise did a great job for you? Perhaps you are looking for a gift for the senior partner so you can get noticed when it is promotion time The best and most famous book in the law is Black's Law Dictionary. Wittenmeyer, Annie
Boston: E.B. Stillings & Co., 1891 First edition. Revised and updated editions of the Red Book continued to be released. Publisher's red cloth lettered in gilt on front cover. . Octavo. Some rubbing to extremities, some fading to cloth, and a couple small black stains on back cover (probably ink or paint). Yellow floral endpapers. Hinges cracking slightly and binding a bit shaken. Toning to edges, margins, and endpapers. A bit of pink staining, possibly paint, at bottom edges of final ten or so leaves. The final printed leaf in the book is a bit short at fore-edge, possibly from imprecise binding. Overall a good, sound copy of a scarce book. Sarah Annie Turner Wittenmyer (1827-1900) was a writer and Civil War nurse who was elected president of the Women's Relief Corps in 1889. She was also the first president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. The Women's Relief Corps was an offshoot of the Grand Army of the Republic, which was established in 1866 as a political advocacy group by veterans of the Union Army. The GAR campaigned for the voting rights of black veterans and for the establishment of veterans' pensions. The WRC advocated for similar goals, as well as for establishing an infrastructure to support the wives and children of Union Army soldiers killed or injured during the Civil War. The introduction to this book explains that the WRC sought to honor and establish pensions for the numerous women who provided medical care to the Union Army. Wittenmyer received her own pension in 1898. [Attributes: First Edition]

Henry Campbell Black
St Paul MN: West Publishing Co. Very Good in original leather bindings. See very detailed description. Very nice 1891 first Edition Black's Law Dictionary in it's original state. Not rebound and NOT a reprint. I flipped through each and every page of this book and noted anything I could find. Obviously, most of these points are being very miniscule and very few sellers note such things. I do because I want you to know exactly what you are getting, in detail, before you bid. The thumb tabs are crisp and sharp, with no worn or torn edges. The pages are crisp, clean and supple. The exterior is much better than average for an original, unrebound copy. This is an exceptionally solid copy, condition is Very Good. Buy from a seller with experience (30+ years selling law books) and who can give you an ACCURATE and DETAILED description! If you'd like more, or higher resolution photos, contact me and I will send them to you. For those who want an extremely detailed description- The exterior shows light signs of wear around the edges, but far from what is typical for a book like this where edge wear from "shelf pull" was normally quite heavy. You can actually still see the dimpling on the top and bottom of the covers which indicates it wasn't used that much as those dimples wear away fairly quick( ie the raised ridges and indentations kind of like the rippling found on the edge of a dime). There is only light wear to the faces of the covers. The leather is smooth and supple, with a nice even patina from being handled and aged over the last 127 years. The only points to note on the ex … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original green pictorial cloth, gilt, with a little bruising to spine extremities. Fore-edge of front free endpaper slightly frayed as hinge tender between frontispiece and title page. Publisher's note tipped in. xiii, 404pp. London, George Philip & Son, Rare, and increasingly difficult to find in the publisher's pictorial cloth binding. ?Kilimanjaro is now an open secret; the great crater of Kibo has been discovered, the summit of the mountain has been attained, and the scientific material collected is such as to afford a tolerably complete picture of the most interesting region of equatorial East Africa? (Preface). The first serious attempts to climb Kilimanjaro weren't made until the late 1880's. In 1887 Count Teleki climbed as high as 17,300 feet and Meyer himself reached the ice-cap at 18,000 feet before being forced to return. Meyer's successful ascent with Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889 was all the more difficult for being made over the Ratzel glacier and without any climbing irons. Upon reaching the summit, he was able to refute the claim made by Ehlers in the same year that there was no crater. Neate, 517. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

YEATS, William Butler) GANCONAGH, pseud.
T. Fisher Unwin. (Pseudonym Library) 1891. FIRST EDITION. Half title. Uncut in orig. mustard yellow envelope wraps; sl. dusted & marked, spine chipped & split but sound. Wade 4; quoting Symons that the initial print run consisted of 1644 copies in wrappers and 356 in cloth. Despite the disparity in numbers of the two original formats, of the ten copies offered at auction in the last 30 years, six have been in cloth and only four in wrappers. These two stories represent Yeats' only completed attempt at realistic fiction. John Sherman tells the story of a man being torn between two different cities (London and Dublin), and two different women; Dhoya is a mythological tale about the relationship between a fairy and a mortal. Meyerheim, Paul - (1842 - Berlin - 1915)
1891. Bleistift, auf Bütten, verso Nachlaßstempel. 29:21,8 cm.
