Wilde, Oscar
London: Ward Lock and Co., (1891). First edition. Leather_bound. Very Good. N.d. (1891) .First edition in book form, preceded by the 1890 appearance in Lippincott's Magazine. 8vo. in three-quarter polished dark brown morocco over navy cloth boards; raised hubs, spine lettered and compartmented in gilt; marbled endpapers. vii + 334 pp. with fore edges uncut. A tight, internally clean example, scattered foxing to the marbled endpapers and a touch of foxing to the final leaf of text. The binding, while polished, shows previous scuffing down primarily the left side of the spine strip and has some fading to the leather along the left side of the front cover. Wilde's most famous and widely known work, this tale of horror about a dissipated "young" man whose aging and sinfulness shows not on his person but only on a painted portrait of himself that is kept locked away. Famously, the tale was a result of a luncheon between Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle and their Lippincott publisher who challenged them to each produce a thrilling short story that would appeal to a broad, popular readership; Wilde produced "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and Doyle the Sherlock Holmes novella "The Sign of Four".

Alva Ixtlilxochitl, Fernando de
Mexico City: Secretaria de Fomento, 1891-92. First printing. Two volumes, octavo (23 x 16 cm), pp 508, 455. (Palau 9080) Important indigenous accounts of the Toltecas, Texcocans and the Chichimecas, edited by prominent Mexican archivist Alfredo Chavero. The material in the first volume was previously published in Kingsborough's great tomes The Antiquities of Mexico, and was translated into French by the great French Mexicanist Abbe Ternaux-Compans, though the translation is not considered accurate: this volume is sometimes referred to as the Book of the Kings of Texcoco, as it is a history of that people from its origins through the Spanish Conquest: they were very important allies of Cortes. The material in the second volume was first published here, in this edition, from material that Ixtlilxochitl had himself collected. Connected by birth to the royal house of Texcoco and a great grandson of the last Aztec emperor, he was admirably situated to write the history of his people. He himself was well educated at the college the Spaniards set up for the native royalty -- Sta. Cruz de Tlaltelolco, where he was educated in Najuatl and Spanish. It is said that the Viceroy himself, for whom he was the personal translator, directed him to write these histories. His dates are conjectural, but span somewhere between 1575 - 1650. All subsequent reprints of Ixtlilxochitl's works are facsimiles of Chavero's edition, which remains definitive. Nice example of good Mexican printing, under the direct patronage of President Diaz to commemorate the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Ame … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEMPE, Reverend H.
Octavo, [54] pages (including an 18-page vocabulary). Wrappers with one minute nick and short crease; bottom corner of the leaves at the rear a little curled; a near-fine copy. The author was a missionary attached to the Finke River Mission (Hermannsburg); 'the vocabulary is that of the tribe inhabiting the River Finke, and is also, with only slight variations in the dialect, that of the tribes in the MacDonnell Ranges eastward to Alice Springs, but not far westward of the River Finke, and extending southward to the Peake'. Offered together with a very fine copy of Part 2 of the same volume, issued separately in the same year. It contains SCHULZE, Reverend Louis: The Aborigines of the Upper and Middle Finke River. Their Habits and Customs, with Introductory Notes on the Physical and Natural-History Features of the Country (octavo, [37] pages). The author was a missionary of fourteen years standing in the region at the time the article was written (in German; this translation, from the manuscript, is by J.G.O. Tepper). Both volumes also contain numerous other articles, not least CHEWINGS, Charles: Geological Notes on the Upper Finke River Basin (8 pages plus a plate). Paperbackfirst edition
