LORRAIN (Jean)
[Click Below for Full Description]

IBSEN, HENRIK
New York: John W. Lovell & Co, 1891. FIRST AMERICAN PRINTING. No. 49 OF 100 COPIES of the Large Paper Edition. This is a limited, Large Paper Copy of Ibsen's most famous play, very rare both institutionally and in commerce, with visually pleasing wide margins, tall proportions, and charming plates. "Hedda Gabler" tells the story of a strong-willed woman marooned in a marriage to a boring pedant, and the destructive results that follow when she refuses to accept society's role for her as the supportive wife. Britannica notes that this play "is remarkable for its nonjudgmental depiction of an immoral, destructive character, one of the most vividly realized women in dramatic literature." Although Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) began his career in the Romantic vein, he became a pioneer of the realist style, and each later play concentrates on the troubled psyche of a protagonist caught between individualism and social pressure. It is not an overstatement to say that Ibsen revolutionized the theater; PMM notes that "[his] influence on the whole course of modern drama may be indicated by the inclusion of his plays in the repertoire of every avant-garde theatre of his day." Our American edition is surprisingly rare on the market, with no listed on ABPC or RBH in the last 50 years.. 210 x 165 mm. (8 1/4 x 6 1/2"). xv, 236 pp.Translated from the Norwegian by Edmund Gosse. I, dated 1902, mild age-toning, a few spots to endpapers, else near-fine, contemporary half red morocco with superbly gilt-tooled spines, top edge gilt, and others uncut, joints slightly rubbed, otherwise an excellent set. Sir Edward George Clarke (1841-1931), became a barrister in 1864, was made a queen's counsel in 1880 and a bencher of Lincoln's Inn in 1882. Clarke quickly made a name for himself at the Bar and was considered one of the leading barristers of the Late Victorian era. His legal career included representing Oscar Wilde in 1895 in his disastrous prosecution of the Marquess of Queensberry for libel. Clarke entered Parliament as an MP in 1880 and served as Solicitor General in the Conservative government of 1886-92. In 1899 he found himself in disagreement with his party over the government's South African policy and resigned his seat in Parliament the following year. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Paris: Librairie L. Conquet, 1891. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Small 12mo. [10], 51, [9] pp. Bound by the well-known French artisan and bookbinder Leon Gruel in red Morocco, top edge gilt. Stylized gilt borders and gilt rules on the boards, gilt lettering and decorations on the spine, red fabric with floral design on endpapers and matching fabric used on the pastedowns, surrounded by elaborate gilt designed border on red Morocco, with a light blue silk bookmark bound in. Vignette title page in color along with a frontispiece and eleven plates and numerous decorations, all by the author. This is the publisher's presentation issue on vellum paper, signed by publisher and bookseller Leon Conquet with his indication that this copy is for Monsieur Legrand. This almost certainly was the well-known French illustrator Louis Legrand. Legrand moved to Paris in 1884 and began studying printmaking with the Belgian artist Felicien Rops who was under exclusive contract to Conquet from 1883 to 1885. Conquet's bookshop in Paris was a kind of salon for Parisian bibliophiles and illustrators and Conquet, Rops, Morin, and Legrand would have been well-acquainted by the time of this book's publication in 1891. Although there are no other ownership markings, the foregoing and Conquet's eschewal of using initials or a first name to identify the intended recipient suggests that there was only one person named Legrand who could be the intended recipient of a presentation copy of this book, Louis Legrand himself (See W. Édition originale. There is some minor rubbing and fading to the spines, especially the edges, but otherwise the bindings are nicely preserved and in lovely condition. Carroll, Lewis [Dodgson, Charles]
London: Macmillan and Co., 1891. Tenniel, John. Hard Cover. Very Good. Illustrated by John Tenniel. Later printing (Eighty-Fifth Thousand). Signed by Tenniel on the title page. Publisher's red cloth, with an illustration of Alice holding a pig to the front board, with an illustration of the Cheshire Cat to the rear panel, lettered in gilt, black coated endpapers. Very good, with some light toning to the spine, minor soiling to the boards, bright gilt, spine lightly starting inside the front cover, otherwise sturdy binding, bright and clean pages. Overall, a tight and attractive copy, extremely scarce with Tenniel's signature. Housed in a custom slipcase with matching chemise. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson wrote the nonsensical story Alice's Adventures in Wonderland under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll for Alice Liddell, who was a frequent subject of Dodgson's revolutionary portrait photography. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland includes a black and white frontispiece along with forty-two in-text illustrations by John Tenniel, Dodgson's frequent artist collaborator, with whom he had a somewhat volatile relationship due to their mutual perfectionism. Indeed, the true first issue of Alice was published by Macmillan in London in a print run of 2,000 copies, but was quickly suppressed because neither author nor artist approved of the quality of the reproductive illustrations.

William Butler (W.B) Yeats
T. Fisher Unwin, 1891. T. Fisher Unwin. A first edition and first print published in 1891 by T. Fisher Unwin. One of only 2000 copies printed, with only 356 of these in buff cloth. The remaining copies were in soft wraps. Part of 'The Pseudonym Library', this was the tenth title in that series. This copy is in near fine condition with only minor wear to the top and bottom of the spine and a small split to the edge of the spine of around 1cm. corners are bumped. Pages are very clean with very little wear and no previous owner's marks. This was only Yeats third published book - writing as 'Ganconagh', a close descendant perhaps to 'Gancanagh' a male fairy in Celtic Mythology that is fond of the ladies. There are two short stories. The first 'John Sherman leaves Ballah' is a short love story that takes place in Ballah and London, two contrary locations representing the virtuous countryside and the villainous city. The second story 'Dhoya' is about a local Sligo legend and a spirit that lives in a fictional bay yearning for human love. A scarce title especially in this condition . Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1891.

Verlaine, Paul
Paris: Léon Vanier. Published 1891 (first published 1884), inscribed to fellow writer Guy de Passillé, and with a manuscript poem 'Tu fus souvent cruelle' that would appear two years later in his 'Odes de son Honneur' (1893), also signed, but titled 'Extrait d'un livre inedie' (Verlaine could simply be referring to the book he has not yet released). Poèmes Saturnien bound afterwards, with separate title page (dated 1890) also bears an inscription from Verlaine on the blank before the half title. 8vo, quarter vellum, marbled boards, red spine label, very good, light soil to vellum, pages of Poèmes Saturnien a bit tanned. Thus, three signatures of Verlaine plus manuscript poem of 20 lines. Very Good.
