Fry, W. Ellerton:
Looking for 'a few paying gold reefs' and with a concession granting him rights to minerals, Cecil J. Rhodes formed the British South Africa Company which sent its heavily guarded Pioneer Column north to exploit the land between the Limpopo and Zambezi rivers in 1890. The Column, consisting of 192 prospective miners, with the famous hunter Frederick Courtney Selous as guide, and 500 troopers of the newly formed British South Africa Police Company, established a camp, Fort Salisbury, at the site of present day Harare. 'An album was produced of 154 of W. Ellerton Fry's original whole-plate photographs, which form a comprehensive record of the historic trek of the Pioneer column from Mafeking to Fort Salisbury in 1890.' Jules Verne
London, England: Sampson, Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington. In impressive condition for its age....printed and bound in 1891. The binding is loose and needs preservation. The green cloth cover has several spots and scratches. But the pages are all intact, and remarkable for their age. Includes short catalog bound in the back from 1889. Book is AS-IS, just as you can see in the pictures. The Flight to France, or, The Memoirs of a Dragoon. A Tale of the Days of Dumouriez. With 32 illustrations. Published in London by Sampson, Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington, 1891. This is in the original green cloth, with pictures in black, and the title in gold. The First British edition, also the first hardbound and first illustrated edition in English....the first printing of which was in 1888, and this one was printed in 1891, according to the cover sheet....my understanding is that Verne's books were in such demand at the time that they were constantly in print. The primary binding, which this binding is NOT, had gilt "streaks of rain" across the front cover. This one does not have that cover. It was in the same constant print run by the publishers, but was the "New and Cheaper Edition." A similar copy from 1888 is on sale on Abebooks.com at this moment for $1950, in slightly better condition. This one has some spots and scratches on the cover, and the binding is loose, just as pictured. Still, however, it is in impressive condition for its age, and is priced accordingly, though there are very few examples to be found for sale. Sold AS-IS, just as you can see in the pictures. MARSHALL, Alfred.
London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1891. London and New York: Macmillan and Co.,, 1891. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, ruling continued to boards in blind, dark green endpapers. A very fresh copy. Second edition, one of 3000 copies, from the library of L. J. Rowell of Iowa City, with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper verso. Principles of Economics is a classic and the first full exposition of Marshall's theoretical position. Keynes described its publication as inaugurating "the modern age of British economics" (Economic Journal, 1940). Schumpeter writes that "Marshall's great work is the classical achievement of the period, that is, the work that embodies more perfectly than any other, the classical situation that emerged around 1900 … Behind the great achievement there is a still greater message. More than any other economist—with the exception, perhaps, of Pareto—Marshall pointed beyond himself … Naturally his work is out of date. But there is in it a living spring that prevents it from becoming stale" (History of Economic Thought, pp. 834, 840). Marshall maintained for twenty years that this would be followed by a companion volume covering foreign trade, money, trade fluctuations, taxation, collectivism and more, but none was ever published. Running to 770 text pages in this edition, with a hefty text block that places strain on its case, the book is rare in the original cloth.

Bergh, Rudolph
I. Cohens Bogtrykkeri, Copenhagen, 1891. 8vo,16 pp, with double-paged two color lithograph at rear. Saddle-stapled in wraps. The first edition of this brief but important early essay on the relationship to prostitution and tattoos, notable for the beautiful double-paged lithograph plate at rear which reproduces drawings of 18 tattoos observed by Bergh in his research and are scarce early visual documentation on the subject, published 8 years before Le Blond. A German translation was published in the same year in an academic journal, in which form it was more widely circulated. This first edition of the pamphlet is rare, this being the only copy we've handled in over a decade. Bergh based his observations on a study of 800 prostitutes in Denmark, of which about 10% were tattooed. According to Jane Caplan, who mentions the pamphlet in her essay "Educating the Eye" in: Sexology in Culture: Labeling Bodies and Desires, over half of the tattoos observed were done by a single sailor tattoo artist, whom Bergh credited with reviving a tradition previously in decline. Wraps toned, and split at spine for half the length, but holding. Ownership signature to cover, along wtih a numeric notation in red pencil, and inscription in an unknown hand inside front cover. About very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
