LOBACHEVSKY, Nikolai Ivanovich (1792-1856)
Austin, Texas [in fact Rolla, Missouri, School of Mines Press, 1891]. 4to (206 x 153 mm), pp [3] 126-165, with numerous diagrams in the text; a very good copy in contemporary cloth-backed boards, with wrapper title 'Theory of Parallels, Lobatschewsky, Translated by Dr. George Bruce Halsted, Austin, Tex.' laid down on upper cover. The true first edition in English, incredibly rare offprint issue (one of two copies known), of Lobachevsky's revolutionary discovery of non-Euclidean geometry. This work, published in the short-lived and little-known journal Scientiae Baccalaureus, is a translation of Geometrische Untersuchungen zur Theorie der Parallellinien (Berlin, 1840), which was the first complete account of Lobachevsky's work to be published in a Western European language; 'following its publication, in 1842 [sic], Lobachevsky was, on the recommendation of Gauss, elected to the Göttingen Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften' (DSB). Lobachevsky sent Gauss a copy of the 1840 work, and Gauss's opinion of it is recorded in a letter, dated 28 November 1846, written to his colleague the astronomer H. C. Schumacher: 'In developing the subject, the author followed a road different from the one I took myself; Lobachevsky carried out the task in a masterly fashion and in a truly geometric spirit. I consider it a duty to call your attention to this book, since I have no doubt that it will give you a tremendous pleasure'. Lobachevsky's first discussion of non-Euclidean geometry, Exposition succincte des principes de la géométrie avec une démonstration rigoureuse du théorème des parallèles, w … [Click Below for Full Description]

FREUD, Sigmund.
FIRST EDITION of Freud's first, and rarest, book. "Freud's treatise on aphasia, his first book, was little known or appreciated by contemporary neurologists, but Freud always regarded it as the most significant of his neurological writings. The work, subtitled 'A critical study', was the first to criticise the foundations of the Wernicke-Lichtheim theory of aphasia, which held that losses of function aphasia were caused by lesions to anatomically circumscribed centers corresponding to the various functions in language. Freud demonstrated that this concept led to localization schemes of labyrinthine complexity, and did not fit with specific case studies; it was thus necessary to assume that the cerebral areas involved in language were less circumscribed... Departing from the mechanical views of the Helmholtz school, Freud approached the development of speech and reading from a psychological standpoint" (Norman). G&M 4627.1. Of considerable rarity: of the 850 printed, only 257 were sold, and that over a period of nine years. The remainder were pulped. Norman Catalogue F15.

Rock Island Land & Debenture Co; ( Wichita, Ks ? ); pp.; ; VG; nc/1891. Sheet, 28 x 21", printed on one side only. _____ Given their prominence on this map and eventually in El Reno, the Chicago, Rock Island & Western Railroad almost certainly had some stake in this land company. _____ The issuing land company's slug is at the top left._____ They had offices in El Reno, Topeka and Wichita._____ We assume the printing of the map was done in Wichita._____ Manager John V. W R Cross
Photograph. Albumen photograph measures 9 -3/4" x 6 -1/2" on buff mount with title in the negative. Mount measures 10" x 6 -3/4". This photograph was acquired with others credited to the frontier photographer W. R. Cross, but does not have his imprint. Photo taken circa 1891. This image depicts the Minnekahta Block viewed from atop a nearby hill, with a view of the Gillespie Hotel which burned in 1932, a large building located where the historic Hotel Evans still stands, and smaller store fronts. Photograph is in very good condition with light rubbing, light soiling and very light blue ink affecting photo; mount has light wear to all edges and a pinhole on top edge, and light soiling on verso. With good contrast this image shows the growing town Hot Springs. Detailed, one can distinguish that some of buildings were constructed of Lakota sandstone obtained from quarries outside of town. A train is also visible telling of the town's growing popularity for its scenery and mineral springs. "In 1890, the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad extended a branch from its main line running through Buffalo Gap to Hot Springs. The next year, the Burlington constructed a branch into Hot Springs from its main line, which ran through Edgemont to Deadwood" (City of Hot Springs). By 1892, Hot Springs, the "City of Healing Waters", was accessible from all directions by rail. William Richard Cross (1839-1907) was a photographer of the Nebraska and South Dakota frontier. He acquired a gallery in Hot Springs around 1888, photographing the growing town, Native Americans living at the ne … [Click Below for Full Description]

Doyle (Sir Arthur Conan)
colophon: Unwin Brothers Printers -93, 1891. 6 complete volumes (the Holmes stories in vols. ii-vi), copiously illustrated throughout, occasional damp stains in upper margins, large 8vo, recent 2-tone green buckram, good. The first appearance of the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The publication in The Strand is not exactly 'serial' since each story stands on its own. Doyle wrote 'A serial story is a mistake, since if a single number was missed, the interest was gone.' He regarded himself as a pioneer with the present format. Notwithstanding, The Hound of the Baskervilles was serialised in the Strand in 1901/2 - but perhaps the fame of the author and the popularity of Holmes by now permitted this. The binding is library style, but there are no stamps or other signs. (see Green and Gibson A10

GISSING, George (1857-1903)
London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1891. First edition, one of fewer than 1000 copies of the first issue. 3 volumes, 8vo. Half-titles. With the advertisement leaf at end of vol. 1. Original morocco-grained green cloth, titles gilt-lettered on spine, and in blind on front covers, cream endpapers; velveteen-lined morocco-backed folding case. Item #401338 The threats and opportunities of mass culture. Gissing's masterpiece about London literary life in the 1880s, its title referencing London's neighborhood of poor, struggling, lowly writers. James Joyce compared Gissing's inelegant style to a "Triestine noodle and bean soup," and though Gissing neared the hack-ish writers populating his book, his empathy for the disenfranchised characters - and particularly women - keeps him relevant. As does his penchant for suffering, risk and pain that all add up to a search for truth: a space he gained not from an MFA or the right family name, but from doing the work. George Packer wrote that Gissing had only one subject: "the cost of poverty and social isolation to people of intelligence and sensitivity ... Orwell said, 'Gissing's novels are a protest against the form of self-torture that goes by the name of respectability,' but the protest is muted by the fact that Gissing himself partly craved respectability. He might have been a socialist if he'd had more money; instead, the vision is of endurance and defeat. 'New Grub Street' carries it to almost unbearable intensity (George Packer, "The Struggling Writer: George Gissing Had It Right," New York Times Book Review, 13 October 1991, p. 1). FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES
Calcografía Nacional, Madrid. Materia: Colección de Aguafuertes. Goya. Los Proverbios. Arte. [Click Below for Full Description]

Aldis Wright and later John Glover as collaborators, was published in nine volumes by Macmillan, but printed at the University Press, so that it became known as the Cambridge Shakespeare. This important edition was based on a 'thorough collation of the four Folios and of all the Quarto editions of the separate plays, and of subsequent editions and commentaries' (preface), so that in textual matters it constitutes a virtual variorum. LORRAIN (Jean)
[Click Below for Full Description]

This is a limited, Large Paper Copy of Ibsen's most famous play, very rare both institutionally and in commerce, with visually pleasing wide margins, tall proportions, and charming plates. "Hedda Gabler" tells the story of a strong-willed woman marooned in a marriage to a boring pedant, and the destructive results that follow when she refuses to accept society's role for her as the supportive wife. Britannica notes that this play "is remarkable for its nonjudgmental depiction of an immoral, destructive character, one of the most vividly realized women in dramatic literature." Although Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) began his career in the Romantic vein, he became a pioneer of … [Click Below for Full Description]
