Wilde, Oscar
London: Ward Lock and Co., (1891). First edition. Leather_bound. Very Good. N.d. (1891) .First edition in book form, preceded by the 1890 appearance in Lippincott's Magazine. First issue with "nd" instead of "and" 8th line from bottom p. 208. 8vo. in three-quarter midnight black morocco over specially hand made dark brown rice paper covered boards; raised hubs, spine labels lettered in gilt; top edge gilt. Binding is fine and interior is clean. vii + 334 pp. with fore edges uncut. Wilde's most famous and widely known work, this tale of horror about a dissipated "young" man whose aging and sinfulness shows not on his person but only on a painted portrait of himself that is kept locked away. Famously, the tale was a result of a luncheon between Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle and their Lippincott publisher who challenged them to each produce a thrilling short story that would appeal to a broad, popular readership; Wilde produced "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and Doyle the Sherlock Holmes novella "The Sign of Four".

WHITMAN, WALT
Good-Bye My Fancy. 2d Annex to Leaves of Grass, 1891. FIRST EDITION. This form of Good-Bye My Fancy is not in Myerson. Myerson notes that examples in binding A are trimmed on all edges and measure 8 7/8 in. tall, while those in bindings B and C are 9 ½ in. tall. The present copy in binding A is 9 ½ in, tall and untrimmed except for the top edge. The present example may have been a special form made for presentation purposes that so pleased Whitman that he ordered those subsequently bound in bindings B and C to replicate it."Whitman, even during the final year of his life, was working on a new book, this one what he called 'an appendix to November Boughs.' ... Whitman enlisted his old printing firm, Ferguson Brothers of Philadelphia, and his old binder, Oldach, and his old emissary, Traubel, to whip this final book together and get a thousand copies printed, most of which McKay purchased to sell under the McKay imprint ... The book contained both poetry and prose (what Whitman called 'melanged prose 'as if haul'd in by some old fisherman's seine'; the poems from this volume would form the second annex of the Deathbed Edition of Leaves" (Folsom, Walt Whitman as a Maker of Books, Whitman Archive).Myerson A 13.Original deep red cloth, top edges gilt, binding A. BOOTH, Charles.
London: Stanfords, 1891. Colour-printed map. 630 x 880mm. Laid on light canvas, as issued, repairs to folds. A map of London colour-coded to show the percentage of the population under the poverty line, with areas marked between under 10% to 70%. It was published in the appendix to Booth's 'Life and Labour of the People in London', Volume II. Examples are uncommon due to the low quality of the paper used at the time. Booth (1840-1916), owner of the Booth Shipping Line, acted in response to an 1886 Pall Mall Gazette article that claimed that 25% of Londoners lived in poverty. Booth regarded this figure as wildly exaggerated, so recruited a team of volunteer researchers to compile an analysis of social conditions based on field visits and interviews with local police, clergy and employers. The first volume of 'Life and Labour' (1889), covering the East End, showed that 35% lived in poverty. The second series, covering the rest of the city (1891) showed that no less than 30 per cent of the city's total population could be classed as poor. HYDE: Victorian Maps of London, 254.

DIDEROT Denis
- Plon & Nourrit & Cie, Paris 1891, 10x16,5cm, reliure de l'éditeur. - Prima edizione. [Click Below for Full Description]

TOLSTOY, Leo
M. Elpidine 1891-6, Geneve. The rare first edition of one of Tolstoy’s main anti-clerical text, in which he methodically rejects all the tenets of traditional religion. Tolstoy considered organized religion an obfuscation of the true Christian spirit, and maintained that if his faith was based solely on theological books, then reading them would certainly make him an atheist. WorldCat apparently locates just three copies outside of Russia: UCLA, Biblitothèque de Genève, British Library. Not in Kilgour. Two parts in one volume, octavo (202 x 134mm). (Margins yellowed; some spotting on the second title page and last few leaves; some small marginal repairs.) Contemporary half leather with the original front wrapper bound-in (neatly re-cased; free endpapers possibly renewed; inscription [‘v dvukh chastiakh’] deleted from the front wrapper). Provenance: A.K. (initials on the first title); Eden Martin, prominent American collector. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DIDEROT Denis
- Plon & Nourrit & Cie, Paris 1891, 10x16,5cm, reliure de l'éditeur. - Edition originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

Kipling had not granted permission for book publication of these letters first published in the PIONEER and PIONEER MAIL, and he consequently insisted on the suppression of this edition and its London counterpart. Manuscript; Wolf, George
1891. Interesting Letter by a Distinguished Nineteenth-Century Pennsylvania Lawyer-Politician [Manuscript]. Wolf, George [1777-1840]. [Autograph Letter, Signed, Washington, DC, December 16, 1825]. Single 9-3/4" x 8" leaf. Four fold lines, two vertical and two horizontal, light browning. Content in small neat hand to recto and verso, fragments of paper (from an album) along left-hand margin. * A lawyer and Jeffersonian, later Jacksonian politician, Wolf was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1814, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1824 to 1829 and the governor of Pennsylvania from 1829 to 1835. Appointed by President Jackson, served as the first comptroller of the Treasury, a post he held until 1838. He is best known as the governor who oversaw the establishment of Pennsylvania's public school system. Addressed to a John Cooper, an associate judge in Pennsylvania, this letter was written when Wolf was a U.S. Representative. Rich with "inside" information, it touches on several interesting topics: his work as a member of the "select committee on the subject of the monument to Geo. Washington," the annual message of President Adams, a mission to Panama, the prosperity of the United States and the impeachment of Robert Porter, a judge in Northampton, Pennsylvania. Letters by Wolf in the market are rare. We could locate only two auction records, the last at Henkels in 1907 (Lot 354, 3 Letters).

DRUMONT Edouard
s.l., 1891. Fine. s.l. 3 avril 1891, 10x13cm, un feuillet remplié. - Signed autograph letter of Edouard Drumont, dated April 3, 1891, 40 lines in black ink on letterhead with the address ""157, rue de l'Université"" Folding inherent in enveloping. Cela distrait. »
