DOUGHTY, C.M. (contributes). RENAN, Ernest (edits and introduces).
Imprimerie Nationale, Paris, 1891. First edition. Quarto. 308 pages. Six-page Introduction ("Documents Épigraphiques recueillis dans le Nord de l'Arabie par M. Charles Doughty") by Ernest Renan. Original blue wrappers, printed label on spine.Contains "Note de. M. Doughty sur son Voyage" which despite the French title is in English (29 pages); also "Transcription et Traduction des Inscriptions Nabatéennes de Medaïn-Salih (in French and Hebrew) (18 pages), "Transcription des Notes contenues dans les Planches" (in English) (9 pages). 57 plates, these being facsimiles of notes and drawings of rubbings which Doughty made from carved rock inscriptions, maps and drawings, 9 folding photogravures of inscriptions. The reason this was published in France was that Doughty had tried without success to sell the Nabatean inscriptions he had collected to the British Museum and the Royal Geographical Society. Meanwhile the French philologist Ernest Renan was in the process of preparing a work on Semitic inscriptions for the Academie des Inscriptions and offered Doughty the opportunity of publication. Renan later deciphered these, using Doughty's transcriptions. A number of the plates in this book, which are of superb quality, were used for later editions of Arabia Deserta. The rest of the volume is devoted to E. Amélineau's "Notice sur le Papyrus Gnostique Bruce".Wrappers chipped and torn at edges. Spine a little cracked and discoloured. Apart from minor water-staining to the lower margins of four maps, internally a bright and clean copy. Very good. Very scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Osler
First state, with the misspelling "Georgias" on page vi. With ads dated November 1891. There were 3000 copies printed of the first state. Very rare in first state. Hinges weak and tender, outside backstrip peeling on both sides of outer boards. Inside spine webbing can be seen in places on hinge. Textblock tight, square, and pages clean with a slight hint of foxing on some pages. Green cloth. "One of the most influential textbooks of general medicine ever written. The chapters describe specific diseases by systems--an innovation now generally followed--and the work's elevated literary style, coupled with its vast store of medical knowledge, brought something new to the medical textbook genre. Writing at the end of a revolutionary period in medicine, Osler was able to fill a widely felt need by incorporating into his textbook the tremendous advances, particularly in microbiology, that had forever altered the face of medicine" (Hook & Norman, 1612). "This great book was for more than a generation the bible of medical students and practitioners in all parts of the English-speaking world" (Singer & Underwood, 317). Professor of clinical medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and later the first chief of medicine at Johns Hopkins, Osler was "one of the bright stars of medical North America" This important book was designed for the use of practitioners and students of medicine. This book has been described by experts as "The best English work on medicine of its time, and probably the most influential general textbook of medicine ever published.

Columbus, Christopher
London Bernard Quarich, 1891. In-Folio. (ii), 33+(1) pages. Bound in old half red calf. The rare First edition of Quaritch Facsimil reprinted in 1893. In 1891 Bernard Quaritch published this edition of Christopher Columbus s Letter to Santángel, or the Spanish Columbus Letter, including a reproduction of the unique surviving 1493 copy and an introduction by his assistant, Michael Kerney. This was a most significant publication and not merely because it made available the earliest surviving printed account of the discovery of the New World by the Old . It also demonstrated that the recently discovered 1493 imprint, whose authenticity had been questioned at a time when Columbus forgeries were prevalent, was indeed genuine. The Letter, consisting of just two large folio leaves, was sold by Quaritch in 1892 to the Lenox Library, now part of New York Public Library. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

BÖHM-BAWERK, Eugen von.
London & New York: Macmillan and Co, 1890 & 1891. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, boards blocked in blind, black endpapers. Capital and Interest: ownership stamp tooled in gilt to front board, contemporary presentation bookplate (dated 1897) and bookseller's ticket to front pastedown, a couple of neat pencil annotations to the text; extremities rubbed, spine ends and corners bumped, small tear to rear endpapers across hinge, overall a very good copy, occasionally spotted. Positive Theory: spine ends and corners rubbed and bumped, some very minor cockling to rear board with faint dampstain to bottom edge, tear to rear free endpaper, contents toned, otherwise a very good copy. First edition in English of both parts of Kapital und Kapitalzins (first published in German in 1884 and 1889 respectively). Böhm-Bawerk's monumental study provided a major contribution to the Austrian school of modern interest theory and serves as an important critique of Marx. "A monument of creative analysis and a milestone on the road of our science, this work presents a series of critiques of theories of interest, each a piece of theoretical cabinet work, each a work of art unequalled in its perfection" (Schumpeter, p. 152). The translator William Smart was the foremost exponent of the Austrian School in Britain during this period. Einaudi 569 & 573. See Batson, p. 18; Schumpeter, Ten Great Economists (Routledge, 1997). FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES
Calcografía Nacional, Madrid, 1891. Materia: Colección de Aguafuertes. Goya. Los Proverbios. Arte. Publicación: Madrid, Real Academis de San Fernando, 1916. 6ª edición. Descripción física: 28,5 x 41 cm. 18 láminas grabadas al aguafuerte. Carpeta. Técnica: Grabado al aguafuerte. Medidas del papel 28,5 x 41 cm. Tinta sepia y negra. Tirada limitada a 50 ejemplares. Hansemann, David Paul v.
Virch. Arch. path. Anat., 123/2. - Berlin, Verlag von Georg Reimer, 1891, 8°, pp.197-388, 10 lith. Taf., feiner Pappband. First Edition! "Further analysis of de-differentiation and numbers of chromosomes in tumour cells Involving "differentiation" in the analysis of tumours created even more difficulties for Hansemann's theory than are mentioned above. In fact they added to the complexity which was to overwhelm his chromosomal concept of the pathogenesis of tumours. Our speculation as to why he involved "differentiation" at all was presented in the previous section. It is clear that Hansemann thought he had discovered the mechanism of the "normal" loss of chromosomes; Weismann had implied that this occurs in normal embryological differentiation. Hansemann in fact went further than Weismann by suggesting that there are successive "phases" of differentiation, each triggered by an asymmetric division of a cell from the previous phase (see above). What now follows is an analysis of Hansemann's probable further thoughts on the problems in his theory at this point, although we recognise that nowhere did he express himself as succinctly as we do for him now. After asymmetric mitosis, Hansemann was not certain which of the two daughter cells is the tumourous one (Hansemann 1891c, 1904c, 1904q).
