Naquet, Alfred, Chemiker und Politiker (1834-1916)
Paris, 19. V, 1891. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. [Click Below for Full Description]

Cranford is one of Gaskell's better-known novels. It was first published in 1851 as a serial in the magazine Household Words, which was edited by Charles Dickens. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, ne Stevenson (1810 - 1865), often referred to simply as Mrs Gaskell, was a British novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of society, including the very poor, and as such are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature. Hugh Thompson's style reflected the nostalgia of the time, his fine line drawing of rural characters and gentle countrified society appealing to the imagination of the public. Walter Müller-Grah
Walter Müller-Grah (1891-1976). [Click Below for Full Description]

Siehe Petermanns Mitt. 1893, Literaturbericht S. 19.

With the personal bookplate of George Frederick Harp to the front pastedown. Dr Carl Peters was a German colonial ruler, explorer, politician and author who was a major promoter of the establishment of the German colony of East Africa. Peters is regarded as an extremely controversial figure owing to his beliefs in Social Darwinism and Volkisch philosophy which highly impacted his treatment regarding the indigenous population. Victor Schoelcher
[Click Below for Full Description]

Tello, Fray Antonio
Imprenta De La Republica Literaria, Guadalajara, 1891. XXIV pgs, 886, XXVII pgs, 23cms x 19cms. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Dickinson, Emily
Roberts Brothers, Boston, 1891. First edition of Emily Dickinson's second book of poetry, one of only 960 copies of the first printing. Octavo, original cloth, original gray cloth, top edge gilt. In near fine condition with a touch of rubbing. Housed in a custom cloth and chemise case. Emily Dickinson published only 11 poems during her lifetime, but upon her death in 1886, her sister Lavinia discovered 1775 manuscript poems. Mabel Todd edited and published the three series of these poems until a quarrel between the Dickinson and Todd families led to a division of the manuscripts, preventing the further publication of complete and authoritative editions of Dickinson's poetry until 70 years after her death (Wolff). Dickinson's lyrics, "her letter to the world," offer an account "of the life about her, of tiny ecstasies set in motion by mutations of the seasons or by home and garden incidents, of candid insights into her own states of consciousness, and of speculations on the timeless mysteries of love and death. Her mind was charged with paradox" (Hart, 201). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
