ALBERT VICTOR (Christian Edward, Duke of Clarence, 1864-1892, Eldest Son of Edward VII)
Excellent long autograph letter signed ("Eddy") to his tutor Rev. J. N. DALTON (John Neale, 1839-1931, Church of England clergyman, Chaplain to Queen Victoria and tutor to Princes George and Albert Victor) telling him that he leaves "Sandringham tomorrow morning with George and arrive at Cambridge by the 1.16 train, if you will kindly have lunch ready for me. George says he would be very pleased to see you, if you care to come to the station to meet us ...", 2 sides 8vo., Sandringham headed notepaper, Sunday, no date but circa Autograph letters of the Duke of Clarence are unusual due to his early death. He is still considered by some to be the infamous "Jack the Ripper".When Albert Victor was just short of seventeen months old, his brother, Prince George of Wales, was born on 3 June 1865. Given the closeness in age of the two royal brothers, they were educated together. In 1871, the Queen appointed John Neale Dalton as their tutor and he stayed with them throughout their education. Albert Victor and his brother George were parted in 1883 as George continued in the navy and Albert Victor attended Trinity College, Cambridge. At Bachelor's Cottage, Sandringham, Albert Victor was expected to cram before arriving at university in the company of Dalton, his French instructor Monsieur Hua, and a newly chosen tutor/companion James Kenneth Stephen.

Multiple
Scotland: These volumes both rate a strong VERY GOOD since the bindings are very strong and the text pages are unmarked. While Volume 2 has no problems, Volume 1 does have some light tiny "speckles" on the first few and last few pages. These are probably "foxing" spots but they are light and very tiny. Volume 1 is "rough cut" and both volumes have the top fore edge in gilt. Both volumes have matching leather bindings (5 raised ribs) But volume 1 was originally issued as a soft bound book--interestingly, the book was rebound to match volume 2 and the original wraps are included. Volume 1 measures 6 x 8 1/2 inches; Volume 2 measures 6 x 9 1/2 inches. (Please read description carefully). REMINISCENCES OF THE MONKS OF ST. GILES was a "quasi-literary club" founded in 1852. The members met often and celebrated each others company but highlights of their meetings encompassed readings of poetry and sometimes prose that was written by the members. In the beginning, most of the writings were lost and there were (apparently) very little concern about saving them but sometime in 1883 there was an attempt to find some of the old manuscripts still surviving and an attempt to publish as many as possible for private circulation only. There was never any attempt at selecting on the basis of "intrinsic merit" since no "high standard" was asked or claimed but they were kept as simple REMINISCENCES … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kipling, Rudyard
Macmillan & Co, London, 1891. First edition of Kipling's first novel. Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco and chemise case. Uncommon in this condition. Written when Rudyard Kipling was 26 years old, The Light That Failed is semi-autobiographical; being based upon his own unrequited love for Florence Garrard. Most of the novel is set in London, but many important events throughout the story occur in Sudan and Port Said. It follows the life of Dick Heldar, an artist and painter who goes blind, and his unrequited love for his childhood playmate, Maisie. Though it was poorly received by critics, the novel has remained in print for over a century. It was also adapted into a play, two silent films as well as a drama film. Fry, W. Ellerton
London: Self-published, 1891.(1891). First printing. Very heavy folio. Unpaginated (41 stiff card leaves). Illustrated with 154 mounted photographs, all half-plate in size, with 5 panoramas consisting of two plates mounted side-by-side; all photographs have a brief printed caption beneath. Bound in 3/4 black leather with green cloth; gilt stamped. All edges gilt. Although the exact number of the printing is not known, it is generally believed that fewer than 20 copies were published. The photographs were taken by Lieutenant W. Ellerton Fry, who was the official photographer of the Pioneer Column which served as security for the occupation of Mashonaland (now part of Zimbabwe) in 1891 by the British South Africa Company (BSAC). The BSAC was formed by Cecil Rhodes for the purpose of exploiting the mineral wealth (primarily gold) of Mashonaland, and then its colonization. Although Fry considered himself to be an amateur photographer, he was recruited by the famous African big game hunter, F. C. Selous, to be the official photographer to document the progress of the BSAC; Selous served as its guide through territory he knew well. Fry was given the rank of Lieutenant and the post of Intelligence Officer. The photographic record contained in this book is outstanding and showed that Fry was anything but an amateur. This copy was owned by Major Malcolm David Graham, who first served as an officer in the Pioneer Column and then, in 1892, was officially appointed as Magistrate at Umtali in Mashonaland. Graham came from a storied family: his grandfather, Colonel John Graham, founded a … [Click Below for Full Description]

This poetry was often set to music in the form of Lieder by notable composers such as Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. Heine's later verse and prose were distinguished by their satirical wit and irony and their often radical political content, that led to many of his works being banned by German authorities. This however helped to increase his popularity, making him one of the best known artists of the 'Young Germany' movement. Whilst he worked as the translator for this collection of works by Heine, Charles Godfrey Leland was a notable writer in his own right, who like Heine travelled extensively.
