GISSING, George (1857-1903)
London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1891. First edition, one of fewer than 1000 copies of the first issue. 3 volumes, 8vo. Half-titles. With the advertisement leaf at end of vol. 1. Original morocco-grained green cloth, titles gilt-lettered on spine, and in blind on front covers, cream endpapers; velveteen-lined morocco-backed folding case. Item #401338 The threats and opportunities of mass culture. Gissing's masterpiece about London literary life in the 1880s, its title referencing London's neighborhood of poor, struggling, lowly writers. James Joyce compared Gissing's inelegant style to a "Triestine noodle and bean soup," and though Gissing neared the hack-ish writers populating his book, his empathy for the disenfranchised characters - and particularly women - keeps him relevant. As does his penchant for suffering, risk and pain that all add up to a search for truth: a space he gained not from an MFA or the right family name, but from doing the work. George Packer wrote that Gissing had only one subject: "the cost of poverty and social isolation to people of intelligence and sensitivity ... Orwell said, 'Gissing's novels are a protest against the form of self-torture that goes by the name of respectability,' but the protest is muted by the fact that Gissing himself partly craved respectability. He might have been a socialist if he'd had more money; instead, the vision is of endurance and defeat. 'New Grub Street' carries it to almost unbearable intensity (George Packer, "The Struggling Writer: George Gissing Had It Right," New York Times Book Review, 13 October 1991, p. 1). ALMA-TADEMA, SIR LAWRENCE
Prijs: Euro 1.650,- (incl. lijst) ?.

Verne, Jules
London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1891. 32 pp ads dated Oct 1890. Original pictorial maroon cloth, all page edges gilt. First British Edition (also the first hardbound and the first illustrated edition in the English language). This is one of Verne's scarcest tales, a story of adventure during the revolt of Quebec in 1837 ("two sons of an infamous French Canadian traitor fight for the revolution in an effort to make up for their father's crime" - Kytasaari). The climax occurs at Niagara Falls.~After publication in French in 1889, each of the two Lovell brothers (Frank and John) plus George Munro quickly came out with wrappered American editions -- the first editions in English. In December 1890 (but dated 1891), Sampson Low published this first hardbound and first fully-illustrated edition in London, priced at 6s. There has never been an American illustrated edition of this title; in fact there was not a hardbound American edition until 1963 (two volumes, LEADER OF THE RESISTANCE and INTO THE ABYSS).~A FAMILY WITHOUT A NAME was unfortunately bound in deep maroon cloth, a color extremely prone to fading (in fact we have seen a couple of copies with spines that have become bright white); this copy does have some fading, but less than usual. There are a few minor cover marks, the original endpapers show some cracking but remain tight, and a few of the gilt-edged gatherings stand slightly proud. All 80 plates are present and and clean. In all, very good-plus or perhaps near-fine. This is only the second copy of this Verne edition that we have been able to offer … [Click Below for Full Description]

Multiple
Scotland: These volumes both rate a strong VERY GOOD since the bindings are very strong and the text pages are unmarked. While Volume 2 has no problems, Volume 1 does have some light tiny "speckles" on the first few and last few pages. These are probably "foxing" spots but they are light and very tiny. Volume 1 is "rough cut" and both volumes have the top fore edge in gilt. Both volumes have matching leather bindings (5 raised ribs) But volume 1 was originally issued as a soft bound book--interestingly, the book was rebound to match volume 2 and the original wraps are included. Volume 1 measures 6 x 8 1/2 inches; Volume 2 measures 6 x 9 1/2 inches. (Please read description carefully). REMINISCENCES OF THE MONKS OF ST. GILES was a "quasi-literary club" founded in 1852. The members met often and celebrated each others company but highlights of their meetings encompassed readings of poetry and sometimes prose that was written by the members. In the beginning, most of the writings were lost and there were (apparently) very little concern about saving them but sometime in 1883 there was an attempt to find some of the old manuscripts still surviving and an attempt to publish as many as possible for private circulation only. There was never any attempt at selecting on the basis of "intrinsic merit" since no "high standard" was asked or claimed but they were kept as simple REMINISCENCES … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLYTH, JAMES. - [THE WORLD'S FIRST POWER-GENERATING WIND-MILL]
London, Darling & Son, 1891. 8vo. Disbound. Stamp to p. 1. 1 .p + 1 plate. ¶ Scarce original printed patent for the world's first energy-generating wind-mill, the "Blyth Turbine", being the first wind turbine used to convert wind energy into power.Blyth's seminal invention marked the dawn of wind turbine development. Although previously credited with being the first to use a wind powered machine to generate electricity, it is now an accepted fact that the American inventor Charles Brush came second to Blyth and his wind mill. There were, of course wind mills before the time of Blyth, but these were used to pump water or grind grain, and Blyth's groundbreaking invention, described and patented for the first time here, is the first used to convert wind energy into power. Blyth experimentend, prompted by his friend Lord Kelvin, with three different turbine designs, which ultimately resulted in a 10-meter-high, cloth-sailed wind turbine, which was installed in the garden of his holiday cottage at Marykirk in Kincardineshire. He used the electricity it produced to charge accumulators, and the stored electricity was used to power the lights in his cottage, which thus became the first house in the world to be powered by wind-generated electricity. The wind turbine in Blyth's garden is said to have operated for 25 years."The first person to harness the wind to produce electricity was a Scotsman, James Blyth ('America reaps the wind harvest', 21 August). He first consulted his colleague, Lord Kelvin, about the possibility of using a windmill for the purpose. Kelvin thought it would … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, 19. V. 1891. Large 8vo. 3 pp. on double leaf. To "Mr.
