HARDY, Thomas.
London: James R. Osgood, McIlvaine and Co., 1891. 3 volumes, octavo. Original brown cloth, spines lettered in gilt, two-stem honeysuckle design by Charles Ricketts to front covers blocked in gilt, bottom edges untrimmed. Housed in custom blue cloth chemises within blue half morocco box, spine lettered in gilt, blue cloth sides. Contemporary library stamp of W. H. Smith to front free endpaper of vol. I. Front joint of vol. I expertly repaired, light finger-soiling to cloth. A very attractive copy. First edition in book-form, first issue with the requisite points. Tess of the d'Urbervilles was originally published as a serial in the Graphic from July to December 1891, with two episodes - the seduction of Tess by Alec d'Urberville and the baptism and death of Tess's baby - removed by the editor. "This temporary dismemberment of the novel necessitated changes in plot, such as the introduction of a mock marriage and the omission of the encounter with the painter of texts, and there were numerous scattered bowdlerizations and omissions. When the novel was published in book form the original text was, of course, restored, and Hardy was able to 'piece the trunk and limbs of the novel together, as originally written'" (Purdy). Printed in the week of 29 November 1891 in an edition of 1,000 copies, Tess proved an immediate success and a second issue of 500 copies was published in February the following year; in addition to the dates (1891) on the verso of the title-pages, the first issue can be distinguished by a number of textual points, including: vol. I, p. [v], line 12, "have it s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Campbell Black
St Paul MN: West Publishing Co. Very Good in original leather bindings. Very nice 1891 first Edition Black's Law Dictionary in it's original state. Not rebound and NOT a reprint. I flipped through each and every page of this book and noted anything I could find. Obviously, most of these points are being very miniscule and very few sellers note such things. I do because I want you to know exactly what you are getting, in detail, before you bid. The thumb tabs are crisp and sharp, with no worn or torn edges. The pages are crisp, clean and supple. The exterior is much better than average for an original, unrebound copy. This is an exceptionally solid copy, condition is Very Good. Buy from a seller who cares enough to give you an ACCURATE and DETAILED description! If you'd like more, or higher resolution photos, contact me and I will send them to you. For those who want extreme detail - The exterior shows light signs of wear around the edges, but far from what is typical for a book like this where edge wear from "shelf pull" was normally quite heavy. You can actually still see the dimpling on the top and bottom of the covers which indicates it wasn't used that much as those dimples wear away fairly quick( ie the raised ridges and indentations kind of like the rippling found on the edge of a dime). There is only light wear to the faces of the covers. The leather is smooth and supple, with a nice even patina from being handled and aged over the last 127 years. The only points to note on the exterior are a small bit of leather flaking at the very top edge of the spine and the corn … [Click Below for Full Description]

1891. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr [Manuscrit - Afrique] Marius Perret (1851-1900), En Colonne au Sénégal. [ca.1891], in-8, 78-3p.

Dickinson, Emily
Roberts Brothers, Boston, 1891. First edition, first issue of Emily Dickinson's second book of poetry, containing the six typographical errors corrected in all subsequent printings. Octavo, original cloth gilt, top edge gilt. One of 960 copies printed. In near fine condition with a some rubbing to the extremities. Contemporary name to the front free endpaper. Emily Dickinson published only 11 poems during her lifetime, but upon her death in 1886, her sister Lavinia discovered 1775 manuscript poems. Mabel Todd edited and published the three series of these poems until a quarrel between the Dickinson and Todd families led to a division of the manuscripts, preventing the further publication of complete and authoritative editions of Dickinson's poetry until 70 years after her death (Wolff). Dickinson's lyrics, "her letter to the world," offer an account "of the life about her, of tiny ecstasies set in motion by mutations of the seasons or by home and garden incidents, of candid insights into her own states of consciousness, and of speculations on the timeless mysteries of love and death. Her mind was charged with paradox" (Hart, 201). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Princesse Sapho
[Click Below for Full Description]

BOOTH, Charles.
London Stanfords, 1891. Lithograph map, printed in colours, extending west to east from East Acton to Homerton and north to south from Hampstead to Plumstead. Published with the Appendix to Labour and Life of the People, Vol II. Framed and glazed, overall size: 101.5cm by 78cm. Charles Booth (1840-1916), had always taken an interest in the welfare of working men, but it was not until he was past middle age that there began to appear the works which established his reputation as a writer on social questions, including his inquiry into the condition and occupations of the people of London, the earlier part of which appeared, along with this map, as Labour and Life of the People (1889), and the whole as Life and Labour of the People in London (1891-1903). Booth's works appeared at a critical time in the history of English social reform. A lively interest was being taken in the problems of pauperism, and it was coming to be recognized that benevolence, to be effective, must be scientific. Life and Labour was designed to show 'the numerical relation which poverty, misery, and depravity bear to regular earnings and comparative comfort, and to describe the general conditions under which each class lives'. Among the many who helped him to compile his material, and edit it, were his wife's cousin, Miss Beatrice Potter (Mrs. Sidney Webb) and (Sir) Graham Balfour for the earlier volumes, and Ernest Aves for the later. It was no proper part of Booth's plan to analyse economic changes or to trace the course of social development. His object was to give an accurate picture of the conditi … [Click Below for Full Description]
