Beautiful chromolitographed plates. Meredith [née Twamley], Louisa Anne (1812–1895) was a writer and naturalist, born in Birmingham. As a young woman she became a centre of lively interest in Birmingham literary, artistic, and Chartist groups, and by 1836 she was a published poet and artist. In 1839, together with her husband, Charles Meredith, she sailed to Sydney, Australia. They settled permanently in New South Wales. Louisa Meredith returned to England only once at the age of seventy-nine. In the 1860s and 1870s, her career as writer, botanist, and artist brought her at last to individual prominence in England and Australia. Following on her early naturalist English books and poems, and mostly publishing in both London and Hobart, she combined her narrative, naturalist, and artistic talents to produce gorgeous folio celebrations of the natural life of Tasmania. Her valuable record of life and landscape, vivid, accurate, and readable, is also punctuated with elegiac passages on the rapid destruction of that world by the settler invasion. She won literary distinctions, awards, and medals at exhibitions around the world and was a notable scientific collector and correspondent. (ODNB). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Capital: Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. Translated from the Third German Edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling and Edited by Frederick Engels

New York: The Humboldt Publishing Co., [c. 1891]. First American printing. Large 8vo. xviii, 506, (52) pp. Publisher's maroon buckram, gilt lettered to the spine, black ruled and lettered to the upper board, patterned endpapers. Neat repair to the front endpaper, very good. The first volume of Karl Marx's groundbreaking work was published in German in 1867 with a second edition in 1873. The author died before the third edition could be issued with Engels stepping in to bring it to completion in 1883 using Marx's notes for his extensive revisions for the earlier first French edition. Engels compiled and edited Volumes II and III from Marx's papers and these appeared in 1885 and 1894. In this period Engels was also able to oversee this translation of the first part, its first appearance in the English language. The translation was carried out by Moore, well connected in British socialist circles, he translated the Communist Manisfesto a year later under Engels editorship. He was ably assisted by Aveling - the partner of Eleanor Marx, the youngest daughter of the author, who was also enlisted to check the quotations used in the work. The first edition with an American imprint appeared in 1889, published by Appleton though it was printed at Aberdeen University Press from Swan Sonnenschein's first edition, itself printed in Perth, so this particular edition is the first to have been printed in the US. Interestingly, Engels in his preface writes of Marx intending for there to be an American edition in his lifetime, but that nothing came of it "for want of a fit and proper translator". Printing and the Mind of Man, 359.

TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES (In A Magnificent Signed Cedric Chivers Binding)

London: Osgood, McIlvaine, 1891. Hardy, Thomas. TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES. A Pure Woman. London: Osgood, McIlvaine, and Co., (1892, 1891). Three volumes. FIRST EDITION (2nd issue of Volume One, 1st issue of Volumes 2 & 3). Dark green morocco binding circa 1900 by Cedric Chivers, stamp-signed on lower turn-in of the last volume, gilt-ruled upper covers with pink inlay and gilt roses in each corner, spine gilt lettered and ornamented with gilt and pink inlay flowers, top edge gilt. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 23 UNIQUE ORIGINAL INSERTED WATERCOLORS, deftly accomplished and produced specifically for these volumes, likely commissioned by Chivers from one of his local Bath artists, all artwork depicting places found in the novel. There is an inserted title page featuring some splendid calligraphy with a strikingly produced D'Urbervilles Crest along with a second inserted leaf listing the page-location and captions of each watercolor. For those who love Thomas Hardy's masterpiece of tragic and transcendent fiction, this is a compelling way to own a copy. The condition of the binding is absolutely superb and Chivers's work here is without doubt worthy of his reputation as one of the paramount (and most innovative) English binders of his generation. Although not featuring a Chivers signature "vellucent" binding or "vellucent" element of design, it is rare to see his work gracing a Victorian three-decker novel, especially one written by the greatest late Victorian novelist. Sadleir 1114. Purdy pp 67-78.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Fine. Illus. by Cedric Chivers.

        ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN

New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1891. Early printing, formatted and bound identically to the first printing. With 174 black and white illustrations by E.W. Kemble. 8vo, original green cloth elaborately decorated in gilt and black on the upper cover and spine. 366 pp. A nicely preserved copy in the publisher’s decorated cloth. The lower inner hinge with some cosmetic splitting to the endpaper and the binding with some light overall mellowing, internally sturdy and uncommonly clean. Along with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn is considered the stepping stone to modern American literature. And along with Tom Sawyer, for the first time, the hero of the novel was a boy. These books are landmarks and Hemingway often offered his opinion that the modern novel would have been impossible without them. With Whitman’s Leaves of Grass and Melville’s Moby Dick, they provide us with a view of America transcending its past and beginning its future. True first editions of this American Masterpiece have become prohibitively expensive to all but a few collectors. This early printing, nearly identical in format and appearance, is a fine substitute.

        The Princess of Cleves

Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1891. Fine press edition of Madame de La Fayette's pioneering roman d'analyse, one of 250 copies, splendidly bound. First published anonymously in French in 1678, the novel remains a high spot of French literature. In the tale of a faithful wife tempted by the fascinating Duc de Nemours at the court of Henri II, The Princess of Cleves introduces a modern psychological realism into the highly stylized conventions of French court romance: "Women generally judge the love one has for them by the pains one takes to please them and to pursue them; but that is an easy matter, provided they are charming. What is difficult is not to yield to the pleasure of pursuing them, -- it is to avoid them, from fear of showing to the public or to them one's feelings." In the tension between her disciplined self-presentation and passionate inner life, the Princess foreshadows the heroines of countless novels to follow. A fine copy of a classic of both French and English literature, in a beautiful fin-de-siècle binding. Two octavo volumes, full contemporary crushed red morocco, raised bands, black spine labels lettered in gilt, spine ruled in gilt, all edges gilt, red morocco doublures bordered in gilt, marbled endpapers, additional heavy gilt-patterned flyleaves, silk ribbon markers. Printed on Japan paper, title pages printed in red and black, preface by P. Laffitte. Illustrated throughout text with engravings by A. Lamotte after drawings by Jules Garnier.

        1891 Skull & Bones Yearbook

[New Haven]. 1891. Large octavo photo album. Black morocco with original silver colored clasp. Embossed name and date ("Joe G. Estill. 1891") in silver on front board and the number "322" on the rear. Light shelf wear, minor rubbing at the tips, else tight, bright, and unmarred, and near fine. The volume includes cabinet photographs of 15 members, many loosely inserted in page mounts, each signed below by the member. Additionally there are two unsigned photographs of unnamed older African-American men, presumably servants; and two additional images: one of the skull and bones, the of the ivy-covered entrance to the Tomb. "Skull and Bones is the oldest of Yale's secret societies and by far the most determinedly secretive. As such, " (Alexander Robbins. The Atlantic. May 2000). A fascinating album from Yale's famous Skull and Bones society, comprising real photos of members with their signatures, as well as photos of the club and related images and iconography. Undoubtedly produced in small numbers for members only, these "yearbooks" are understandably scarce and literally put a face(s) on this notoriously secretive club. Skull and Bones has counted as members many of the most powerful men in the country, from Presidents and Supreme Court Justices to writers and athletes. Prominent among the images here displayed is future Senator Frederick Collin Walcott of Connecticut. Also noteworthy are the photos of the African-American servants who attended to the club. Though unnamed, their inclusion might (or more likely not) offer a more complex portrait of a group often popularly thought of as a bastion of white male privilege. .
