Entsefalometricheskiye issledovaniya mozga v svyazi s polom, vozrastom i cherepnymi ukazatelyami [i.e. En ephalographic Research of the Brain in Connection with Sex, Age and Skull Measurements]

Moscow, 1891. The First Stereotact INstrument for Mapping the BrainAltukhov, Nikolai. Entsefalometriya mozga cheloveka v otnoshenii k polu, vozrastu i cherepnomu ukazatelyu [in Cyrillic]. iii, 55, [1]pp. 6 folding plates, text illustrations. Moscow: Izdatelstvo Moscovskogo Universiteta, 1891. 265 x 180 mm. (mostly unopened). Original printed wrappers, spine repaired, edges strengthened. Minor foxing but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by the author to Konstantin Alekseevich Satunin (1863-1915), a Russian zoologist who described many previously undiscovered mammals of Russia and Central Asia. First Edition. In 1889, nearly 20 years before Horsley and Clarke published their paper on the use of stereotaxy to examine the brain, Dmitrii Zernov, a professor of anatomy at Moscow University, invented the first prototype of a stereotaxic instrument, an arc-based device for cerebral mapping that he called an encephalometer. In a preliminary communication on his device, published in the Russian journal Trudy Fiziko-meditsynskogo Obshestva Moscovskogo Universiteta (Vol. 2 [1889]: 70-80), Zernov stated: "I built an instrument which enables to project the pattern of cranial sutures or cerebral sulci or deep-seated brain structures on the spherical surface and then transform it onto the plane similar to the projection of the terrestrial globe on the map. The localization of a given point on the brain surface is determined by the degrees of latitude and longitude (quoted in Lichterman, p. 1)." Two years later Zernov’s student Nikolai Altukhov gave a complete description of the encephalometer in the present thesis, which included six detailed projection maps based on 40 post-mortem examinations. “Projections of anterior and posterior parts of the corpus callosum, insula and some basal ganglia (thalamus, nucleus lenticularis and caput nuclei caudate) were localized on the surface of the head. [Altukhov] also noted similarity in female and pediatric brains and concluded that the former are underdeveloped” (Lichterman, p. 3). Since both Zernov and Altukhov’s papers were published only in Russian, Western scientists did not learn of Zernov’s encephalometer until much later.

- "Al-Tusi was the first to write a work on trigonometry independently of astronomy. Al-Tusi, in his Treatise on the Quadrilateral, gave an extensive exposition of spherical trigonometry, distinct from astronomy. It was in the works of Al-Tusi that trigonometry achieved the status of an independent branch of pure mathematics distinct from astronomy, to which it had been linked for so long" (Wikipedia Abruf vom 12.05.2015). - "This treatise Kashf al-qina` ‘an asrar al-Shakl al-qatta` (Removal of the Veil from the Mysteries of the Secants Figure) bears sometimes other titles, that is al-Risalat al-qatta` fi ‘ilm al-Handasa (Treatise on Secants in the Science of Geometry) and Kitab al-shakl al-qatta` (The Book on the Secant Figure). In all manuscripts, it is in Arabic. Al-Tusi`s work is the first systematic trigonometry text, independent of astronomy in Muslim civilization. Hajji Khalifa proposes that this book is related to the first figure in the first chapter of Menelaus of Alexandria`s (c. 70-140 CE) Kitâb al-Ukar`s (Sphaerica). It was also first written in Arabic and then translated into Persian by the author himself as a five-chapter book. The number of copies of the Kashf al-qina` in the libraries indicates how commonly and frequently it was used through scholars. The French and the Turkish translations of the book in the Ottoman state at the last quarter of 19th century and first quarter of the 20th century shows that this book still very well-liked. Alexandr Carathéodory published an Arabic edition of the text, accompanied by a French translation. The work was also translated into Turkish by Celal Saygin (d. 1954). The printing of this book in the Ottoman state at the end of the 19th century and translation of it in the beginning of the 20th century shows how the Ottomans were still interested al-Tusi`s works" (muslimheritage). - Text auf Französisch und in Arabisch.         Atlas of the Hudson River Valley: From New York City to Troy, including a section of about 8 miles in width

Watson and co. B000893UFU For your consideration is the 1891 edition of the title, "Atlas of the Hudson River Valley," by F. W Beers. Our book is graded Fair-to-Good. The exterior is Good while the interior is Fair. The green, cloth-covered boards are clean with light-to-moderate edgewear and rubbing. The textblock edges are yellowed from age, but are unmarked. The leather over the spine and the corners is wearing slightly at the corners, but is firm and in good condition. Map #8 is missing and has been replaced with a different, smaller map, otherwise all maps are present. At lease half of the maps have had some old tape repairs around the edges. Out of those with repairs, some have extensive repairs while most have just one or two small pieces of tape on the edge. The maps towards the end of the book are in better condition than those in the beginning. The binding is partially split in a couple of places, but is overall good and intact (the pages are coming out). There is occasional foxing to the blank pages and a handful of pages have small pen or pencil markings. This book will be stored and delivered in a secure storage box with foam padding. Published by Watson and co, 1891; Hardcover binding; Extra-Large, Tall Format; Green cloth covers with dark green leather over the spine and to the corner. . Good.

Native Flowers, Fruits and Insects, Drawn from Nature, with Prose Descriptions and Illustrations in Verse - Last Series. Limited edition of 700 signed and numbered copies. Beautiful chromolitographed plates. Meredith [née Twamley], Louisa Anne (1812–1895) was a writer and naturalist, born in Birmingham. As a young woman she became a centre of lively interest in Birmingham literary, artistic, and Chartist groups, and by 1836 she was a published poet and artist. In 1839, together with her husband, Charles Meredith, she sailed to Sydney, Australia. They settled permanently in New South Wales. Louisa Meredith returned to England only once at the age of seventy-nine. In the 1860s and 1870s, her career as writer, botanist, and artist brought her at last to individual prominence in England and Australia. Following on her early naturalist English books and poems, and mostly publishing in both London and Hobart, she combined her narrative, naturalist, and artistic talents to produce gorgeous folio celebrations of the natural life of Tasmania. Her valuable record of life and landscape, vivid, accurate, and readable, is also punctuated with elegiac passages on the rapid destruction of that world by the settler invasion. She won literary distinctions, awards, and medals at exhibitions around the world and was a notable scientific collector and correspondent. (ODNB). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Capital: Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. Translated from the Third German Edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling and Edited by Frederick Engels

New York: The Humboldt Publishing Co., [c. 1891]. First American printing. Large 8vo. xviii, 506, (52) pp. Publisher's maroon buckram, gilt lettered to the spine, black ruled and lettered to the upper board, patterned endpapers. Neat repair to the front endpaper, very good. The first volume of Karl Marx's groundbreaking work was published in German in 1867 with a second edition in 1873. The author died before the third edition could be issued with Engels stepping in to bring it to completion in 1883 using Marx's notes for his extensive revisions for the earlier first French edition. Engels compiled and edited Volumes II and III from Marx's papers and these appeared in 1885 and 1894. In this period Engels was also able to oversee this translation of the first part, its first appearance in the English language. The translation was carried out by Moore, well connected in British socialist circles, he translated the Communist Manisfesto a year later under Engels editorship. He was ably assisted by Aveling - the partner of Eleanor Marx, the youngest daughter of the author, who was also enlisted to check the quotations used in the work. The first edition with an American imprint appeared in 1889, published by Appleton though it was printed at Aberdeen University Press from Swan Sonnenschein's first edition, itself printed in Perth, so this particular edition is the first to have been printed in the US. Interestingly, Engels in his preface writes of Marx intending for there to be an American edition in his lifetime, but that nothing came of it "for want of a fit and proper translator".         1891 Skull & Bones Yearbook

[New Haven] 1891 - Large octavo photo album. Black morocco with original silver colored clasp. Embossed name and date ("Joe G. Estill. 1891") in silver on front board and the number "322" on the rear. Light shelf wear, minor rubbing at the tips, else tight, bright, and unmarred, and near fine. The volume includes cabinet photographs of 15 members, many loosely inserted in page mounts, each signed below by the member. Additionally there are two unsigned photographs of unnamed older African-American men, presumably servants; and two additional images: one of the skull and bones, the of the ivy-covered entrance to the Tomb. "Skull and Bones is the oldest of Yale's secret societies and by far the most determinedly secretive. As such, " (Alexander Robbins. *The Atlantic*. May 2000). A fascinating album from Yale's famous Skull and Bones society, comprising real photos of members with their signatures, as well as photos of the club and related images and iconography. Undoubtedly produced in small numbers for members only, these "yearbooks" are understandably scarce and literally put a face(s) on this notoriously secretive club. Skull and Bones has counted as members many of the most powerful men in the country, from Presidents and Supreme Court Justices to writers and athletes. Prominent among the images here displayed is future Senator Frederick Collin Walcott of Connecticut. Also noteworthy are the photos of the African-American servants who attended to the club. Though unnamed, their inclusion might (or more likely not) offer a more complex portrait of a group often popularly thought of as a bastion of white male privilege. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES (In A Magnificent Signed Cedric Chivers Binding)

London: Osgood, McIlvaine, 1891. Hardy, Thomas. TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES. A Pure Woman. London: Osgood, McIlvaine, and Co., (1892, 1891). Three volumes. FIRST EDITION (2nd issue of Volume One, 1st issue of Volumes 2 & 3). Dark green morocco binding circa 1900 by Cedric Chivers, stamp-signed on lower turn-in of the last volume, gilt-ruled upper covers with pink inlay and gilt roses in each corner, spine gilt lettered and ornamented with gilt and pink inlay flowers, top edge gilt. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 23 UNIQUE ORIGINAL INSERTED WATERCOLORS, deftly accomplished and produced specifically for these volumes, likely commissioned by Chivers from one of his local Bath artists, all artwork depicting places found in the novel. There is an inserted title page featuring some splendid calligraphy with a strikingly produced D'Urbervilles Crest along with a second inserted leaf listing the page-location and captions of each watercolor. For those who love Thomas Hardy's masterpiece of tragic and transcendent fiction, this is a compelling way to own a copy. The condition of the binding is absolutely superb and Chivers's work here is without doubt worthy of his reputation as one of the paramount (and most innovative) English binders of his generation. Although not featuring a Chivers signature "vellucent" binding or "vellucent" element of design, it is rare to see his work gracing a Victorian three-decker novel, especially one written by the greatest late Victorian novelist. Sadleir 1114. Purdy pp 67-78.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Fine. Illus. by Cedric Chivers.
