        Autograph Musical Quotation Signed.

      - The Hungarian-born conductor led the New York Philharmonic from 1891 and was considered one of the greatest Wagnerians of his day. AMuQS, 1p, 6½" X 4½", n.p., 1894. Very good. Moderate even age toning, with couple of mounting traces on verso. At center, the maestro pens a bold "In Remembrance of the / New York Philharmonic Season, / 1893-94. / Anton Seidl / Conductor." Above this, at the upper left, he pens three measures of music, identifying them beneath as "From the New World. (Dvorak.)." At the upper right, he pens two measures of music, identifying them beneath as "Siegfried Idyll. (Wagner.)." Seidl conducted the premiere of Antonin Dvorak's "From the New World" in this very season -- 1893 -- making this an especially choice and timely example, a single item incorporating the most famous premiere with which he's associated and the composer with which he's most often associated. Very scarce. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Picture of Dorian Gray.

London: Ward Lock and Co., 1891., 1891. FIRST EDITION LIMITED LARGE PAPER ISSUE. Large octavo, pp.334 Limited to 250 copies of which this is no. 134. Signed by Wilde to the limitation page. Internally clean, some inevitable light rubbing to covers. Overall an attractive copy of a very important book. Tucked away somewhere another copy of this book has aged terribly, whilst this one appears to have retained much of its youthful beauty. The most popular of Wilde's books, 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' appeared first in Lippincott's magazine in 1890. The story, as published in book-form, contains six new chapters, many alterations and much additional matter. After the famous trial the publishers, although inundated with orders for copies, withdrew the book from circulation.

The Strand Magazine was a monthly magazine composed of fictional stories and factual articles founded by George Newnes. It was first published from January 1891 to March 1950 running to 711 issues, though the first issue was on sale well before Christmas 1890. Its immediate popularity is evidenced by an initial sale of nearly 300,000. Sales increased in the early months, before settling down to a circulation of almost 500,000 copies a month which lasted well into the 1930s. Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared in publication in 1887, was featured in four novels and 56 short stories. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, beginning with A Scandal in Bohemia in 1891; further series of short stories and two novels published in serial form appeared between then and 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1914. The Sherlock Holmes short stories featured in these volumes are: To volume III (1892): The Adventure of the Blue Cabuncle, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb, The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor; The Adventure of the Coronet and The Adventure of the Copper Beeches illustrations by Sidney Paget. Wells,Edgar Wallace,Dornford Yates and even Winston Churchill. The magazine's iconic cover, an illustration looking eastwards down London's Strand towards St Mary-le-Strand, with the title suspended on telegraph wires, was the work of Victorian artist and designer George Charles Hait. Condition: Twenty of the volumes are bound in their original cloth binding, three are rebound in cloth and two are in a half calf binding.         Also sprach Zarathustra, Vierter und letzter Theil, (Thus Spoke Zarathustra, part IV in original wrappers)

Leipzig: C. G. Naumann, 1891. First public edition. Wraps. Very Good +. NIETZSCHE, Friedrich. Also sprach Zarathustra, Vierter und letzter Theil, C. G. Naumann, Leipzig, 1891. Original wraps + frontispiece portrait of Nietzsche + TP + Quote page + 5-[135] + half title + 3-21 + [23] = Inhalt, Octavo. First Edition. Schaberg 58. The famous first public printing of Nietzsches notorious conclusion to Zarathustra. Although printed in 1890 and dated 1891, this book did not see public release until March of 1892 due to legal arguments between Nietzsches sister, Elisabeth and the publisher. Elisabeth was worried that the books would all be confiscated as obscene and therefore negotiated until she received a contract from Naumann that protected her against this possibility. This edition which is cited in Printing and the Mind of Man as the first edition (ignoring the private printing of 1885) is rare in any condition and unheard of in original wraps. When copies do make their rare appearances on the market, they almost always come bound with the original three books (1883-1884) or, more commonly, bound with copies of the three books as re-issued in 1886. Containing the first edition printing of Nietzsches poems: Dionysian Dithyrambs.CONDITION: Original wraps printed both front and back. Closed tear (1.5) to upper left corner of front wrap. Spine chipped at top and a cracked in several places. Uncut. A beautiful copy of a rare work in its original condition. CONDITION: Original wraps printed both front and back.         Caesar's Column: A Story of the Twentieth Century

F.J. Schulte & Company, Chicago, 1891. 2nd Printing. Very Good/No Jacket. 367 pp. 8vo. Maroon cloth, gilt titles & decoration. One of the first dystopian novels written in the English language. First published in 1890, just three years after Bellamy's classic utopia Looking Backward, this work can be seen as a reaction to Bellamy, as well as to the political climate of the day. It illuminates injustices and social inequalities that exist in civilizations focused on technological progress and the pursuit of wealth. Donnelly was a staunch Populist, and this ideology is evident throughout. Though the novel describes the overthrow of civilization, he states in his preface, "Neither am I an anarchist: for I paint a dreadful picture of the world-wreck which successful anarchism would produce." Though it was popular, it was not reissued until Harvard's Belknap Press reprinted it in 1960. Pre-1960 imprints in general, and Schulte editions in particular, are uncommon on the market. Negley 294. Sargent 41. Bleiler 230.Keywords: FICTION AMERICAN LITERATURE DYSTOPIAN UTOPIAN POPULIST SPECULATIVE 2nd printing, released one year after first edition. Boards slightly rubbed, paper along front hinge split, hinge itself holding strongly, pages toned.
