Also sprach Zarathustra, Vierter und letzter Theil, (Thus Spoke Zarathustra, part IV in original wrappers)

Leipzig: C. G. Naumann, 1891. First public edition. Wraps. Very Good +. NIETZSCHE, Friedrich. Also sprach Zarathustra, Vierter und letzter Theil, C. G. Naumann, Leipzig, 1891. Original wraps + frontispiece portrait of Nietzsche + TP + Quote page + 5-[135] + half title + 3-21 + [23] = Inhalt, Octavo. First Edition. Schaberg 58. The famous first public printing of Nietzsches notorious conclusion to Zarathustra. Although printed in 1890 and dated 1891, this book did not see public release until March of 1892 due to legal arguments between Nietzsches sister, Elisabeth and the publisher. Elisabeth was worried that the books would all be confiscated as obscene and therefore negotiated until she received a contract from Naumann that protected her against this possibility. This edition which is cited in Printing and the Mind of Man as the first edition (ignoring the private printing of 1885) is rare in any condition and unheard of in original wraps. When copies do make their rare appearances on the market, they almost always come bound with the original three books (1883-1884) or, more commonly, bound with copies of the three books as re-issued in 1886. Containing the first edition printing of Nietzsches poems: Dionysian Dithyrambs.CONDITION: Original wraps printed both front and back. Closed tear (1.5) to upper left corner of front wrap.         Caesar's Column: A Story of the Twentieth Century

F.J. Schulte & Company, Chicago, 1891. 2nd Printing. Very Good/No Jacket. 367 pp. 8vo. Maroon cloth, gilt titles & decoration. One of the first dystopian novels written in the English language. First published in 1890, just three years after Bellamy's classic utopia Looking Backward, this work can be seen as a reaction to Bellamy, as well as to the political climate of the day. It illuminates injustices and social inequalities that exist in civilizations focused on technological progress and the pursuit of wealth. Donnelly was a staunch Populist, and this ideology is evident throughout. Though the novel describes the overthrow of civilization, he states in his preface, "Neither am I an anarchist: for I paint a dreadful picture of the world-wreck which successful anarchism would produce." Though it was popular, it was not reissued until Harvard's Belknap Press reprinted it in 1960. Pre-1960 imprints in general, and Schulte editions in particular, are uncommon on the market. Negley 294. Sargent 41. Bleiler 230.Keywords: FICTION AMERICAN LITERATURE DYSTOPIAN UTOPIAN POPULIST SPECULATIVE 2nd printing, released one year after first edition.         Moulin Rouge Bal tous Les Soirs La Goulue.

Poster for La Goulue's appearance at the Mouin Rouge. Paris: Ch. Lévy 1891. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1898. Plate no. 122.. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche

Autograph letter signed to his friend and patron, Oskar Grohe

      - 2 pp. Octavo. Dated April 1, 1891. In German (with translation). Regarding the forthcoming first performance of his cantata, Christnacht."Please be so kind as to let me know directly, or through Weingartner, if the orchestral rehearsals of Christnacht have already started and how they have gone so far. Please also send word as to when the dress rehearsal is scheduled. If only you could get Weingartner to write me a note!" Wolf's cantata, Christnacht, to a text by August Graf von Platen-Hallermünde, was first performed under the noted Austrian conductor Felix Weingartner (1863-1942) on April 9, 1891 in Mannheim, "the last concert to be conducted by Weingartner at Mannheim before he left to take up an appointment with the Berlin Opera." Walker: Hugo Wolf, p. 285. Apparently conceived as the composer's "answer to Bach's Christmas Oratorio." ". The first sketches for the work are dated Christmas Eve 1886. In a letter to Oskar Grohe (26 February 1891), Wolf wrote that he had conceived the composition as a portrait of Christ's personality in two manifestations, the child and the ?Weltüberwinders';, or hero who overcame the world. At the end, these themes and other musical ideas merge and unfold ?with tongues of flame the dogma of God made man and of salvation';, he told Grohe, adding that if the execution did not keep pace with the concept it was ?nobody's fault but my own'; Christnacht has much to commend it and many admirable effects in the lengthy orchestral introduction alone. But Wolf being neo-Bachian/Lisztian in huge brass-laden choruses is Wolf being bombastic, especially in the chorus of believers (Platen indicates shepherds here, but this was insufficiently solemn for his purposes, so Wolf told Grohe, hence their new designation as ?Gläubigen';) and the final chorus, and the work is in consequence not an unmitigated success." Wolf "intensified the expressive vocabulary of the lied by means of extended tonality and post-Wagnerian declamation while retaining the defining elements of the song tradition he had inherited from Schubert and Schumann. Profoundly responsive to poetry, he incorporated detailed readings of his chosen poems in the compositional decisions he made about every aspect of song: harmonic nuances, tonal form, melodic design, vocal declamation, pianistic texture, the relationship of voice to piano, etc. Seeking an art ?written with blood';, he went below the surface of poetry - even where his musical purposes were inevitably distinct from the poet's - in order to recreate it in music of remarkable intensity, written, as he once proclaimed, for epicures, not amateurs." The first 10 images are single, full-page illustrations with titles in English, French and German: "Indians on the prairie", "Race Between Indian, Cowboy and Vaquero," "Emigrant-train attacked by Indians," "Lassoing wild horses," "Cowboys riding bucking horses," "Attack on the old Deadwood coach by Indians," "Indian War Dance," "Buffalo Bill shooting while riding," "Buffalo-Hunt," and "Attack on a settler's cabin." The last page illustrates 3 separate images: "Colon. W.F. Cody-'Buffalo Bill'," "Miss Annie Oakley," and "Black Heart, Indian chief." The free-endpaper at the rear is blank with a 1.5" x .75" stamped imprint in the center of the page in red ink that reads: "Original-Pictures, Buffalo Bill's Wild-West Cy. 1891." A small .75" x 2.375" printed description from earlier sales catalog affixed to upper corner of blank rear endpaper. A 2" closed tear to blank endpaper along lower portion of inner hinge at rear. One to four very small spots at top blank edge of 8 pages, in no way affecting color images as each page has .5" blank borders. Despite these minor imperfections, an attractive, important souvenir of Buffalo Bill's Wild West tours of Europe containing strikingly beautiful, bright, colorful illustrations of many events portrayed in his classic shows. Rare, in Very Good-Near Fine condition, with light general soiling to front and rear panels.

        Grammatica linguae numipu.

Desmet, ID: Typis Puerorum indorum 8vo (22 cm; 8.5"). [3] ff., iv, 255, [1] pp., fold. tables.. 1891 The title-page of this grammar of the Nez Percé language gives the author as "Presbytero missionario e Soc. Jesu in Montibus Saxosis" ("By a missionary of the Society of Jesus in the Rocky Mountains") and that missionary seems to have been one of the two offered above. The work was printed at the "Typis Puerorum Indorum" ("Indian Boys' Press") of the Sacred Heart Mission, a press that (despite its name) was unlike that at the St. Ignatius Mission that was used for teaching the art of printing; the Desmet press was apparently solely operated by the Jesuits themselves and was not used as a teaching tool. Another difference between these two famous mission presses is that the origin of this one is not known — but it is suspected that it came new from St. Louis. The present copy of the grammar is of unbound, never sewn sheets. If the online catalogue records are to be believed, many of the copies in college and university libraries are incomplete, lacking pp. 130–33. Or are those records a serious case of careless copy-cataloguing? => This copy is complete with all pages and both title-pages. Fine condition is a blue cloth clamshell box.

Entsefalometricheskiye issledovaniya mozga v svyazi s polom, vozrastom i cherepnymi ukazatelyami [i.e. En ephalographic Research of the Brain in Connection with Sex, Age and Skull Measurements]

Moscow, 1891. The First Stereotact INstrument for Mapping the BrainAltukhov, Nikolai. Entsefalometriya mozga cheloveka v otnoshenii k polu, vozrastu i cherepnomu ukazatelyu [in Cyrillic]. iii, 55, [1]pp. 6 folding plates, text illustrations. Moscow: Izdatelstvo Moscovskogo Universiteta, 1891. 265 x 180 mm. (mostly unopened). Original printed wrappers, spine repaired, edges strengthened. Minor foxing but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by the author to Konstantin Alekseevich Satunin (1863-1915), a Russian zoologist who described many previously undiscovered mammals of Russia and Central Asia. First Edition. In 1889, nearly 20 years before Horsley and Clarke published their paper on the use of stereotaxy to examine the brain, Dmitrii Zernov, a professor of anatomy at Moscow University, invented the first prototype of a stereotaxic instrument, an arc-based device for cerebral mapping that he called an encephalometer. In a preliminary communication on his device, published in the Russian journal Trudy Fiziko-meditsynskogo Obshestva Moscovskogo Universiteta (Vol. 2 [1889]: 70-80), Zernov stated: "I built an instrument which enables to project the pattern of cranial sutures or cerebral sulci or deep-seated brain structures on the spherical surface and then transform it onto the plane similar to the projection of the terrestrial globe on the map. The localization of a given point on the brain surface is determined by the degrees of latitude and longitude (quoted in Lichterman, p. 1)." Two years later Zernov’s student Nikolai Altukhov gave a complete description of the encephalometer in the present thesis, which included six detailed projection maps based on 40 post-mortem examinations. “Projections of anterior and posterior parts of the corpus callosum, insula and some basal ganglia (thalamus, nucleus lenticularis and caput nuclei caudate) were localized on the surface of the head. [Altukhov] also noted similarity in female and pediatric brains and concluded that the former are underdeveloped” (Lichterman, p. 3). Since both Zernov and Altukhov’s papers were published only in Russian, Western scientists did not learn of Zernov’s encephalometer until much later.
