Bridges' literary work, however, started long before his retirement, his first collection of poems having been published in 1873. As a poet Bridges stands apart from modern English verse yet his work has had great influence in a select circle, by its restraint, purity, precision, and delicacy yet strength of expression.Major Clive Behrens (1871-1935)was the son of Edward Behrens. He married Charlotte Louisa Adela Evelina Rothschild, daughter of Nathan Mayer de Rothschild, 1st Baron Rothschild and Emma Louisa Rothschild, on 4 October 1899. They lived at Swinton Grange, Malton, Yorkshire, England. He held the offices of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) and Justice of the Peace (J.P.)

SUBJECT(S) : Jews - - Education - - New York (State) - - New York. The Hebrew Free School Association was a ?19th - century organization that countered efforts of Christian missionaries by founding a group of free schools for New York City?s Jewish immigrant children. In 1864, Christian missionaries had opened a school on the Lower East Side that offered to teach Hebrew to Jewish children, but the offer proved only a lure to convert Jewish children to Christianity. Outraged, a dozen Reform and Orthodox congregations opened a Hebrew free school nearby, with a complete Hebrew studies program that supplemented the standard curriculum of secular public schools. The school was so successful that the organizers formed a Free Hebrew School Association that opened branches in other Jewish neighborhoods. Aside from turning back the threat posed by Christian missionaries, the association, which was made up of successful, Americanized Jews of German origin, became a major instrument for helping newly arrived Jews?mostly from impoverished shtetls and ghettoes of eastern Europe?to adapt to their new country. In addition to traditional secular education and studies in the Hebrew language and Jewish religion and history, the schools taught the new arrivals hygiene and other American ways unknown in their homelands. The schools began closing in the 1870s, as the New York public school system expanded and as those Jews who had learned their lessons well emerged from the slums and moved elsewhere to assimilate with other Americans? (Encyclopedia of American Education, 2011) . OCLC lists 2 copies (HUC & Harvard) , but the HUC copy listing indicates only 8 leaves and so may be defective. Very light wear to cloth, old spine label and institutional number on title page, faint damp stain along extreme bottom edge of last few leaves, otherwise very clean. (AMR - 39 - 5)

        Lettre autographe signée

      - MILLER Henry (1891-1980), écrivain américain. L.A.S. adressée à M. LYONS. Big Sur, 22 janvier 1951. 1 p. in-4. En anglais. À propos de The Books of my life et de la parution française de Plexus. Miller travaille à l'appendice de The Books of my life (paru en 1952) dans lequel il recense tous les livres qu'il se souvient avoir lu : « Somme job! So far as I know, no writer has ever published a list of this kind. Hence my interest in your statement about the late Justice Holmes » [Quel travail ! I (.) You must have ¿double¿ vision.

        Lapsus Calami

Cambridge: Macmillan and Bowes, 1891. First edition. Very Good. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (some pushing to the spine ends and light fading to the cloth extremities, modest rubbing to the spine ends and board corners) in a Very Good example of the rare dust jacket (modest soiling, some short tears, and only a bit of loss, creasing to the rear flap), of this small volume by James Kenneth Stephen here writing as J. K. S., and perhaps the only copy to survive in jacket. James Kenneth Stephen was an English Poet, cousin to Virginia Woolf, and tutor to Queen Victoria's grandson Prince Albert Victor who was the eldest son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later to become Edward VII, King of England). This slim volume contains Stephen's famous poem "To R.K." (Rudyard Kipling), a Poem which Kipling mentioned in his Autobiography "Something of Myself, For My Friends Known and Unknown" (Macmillan & Co, 1937). There, reviewing his career, Kipling called Stephen "that genius" and referred to Stephen's poem --- contained here for the first time in book form --- in which Stephen deplored the state of contemporary writing: Kipling stating "And I had the additional luck of not being taken seriously for some time. People talked, quite reasonably, of rockets and sticks; and that genius, J.K.S., brother to Herbert Stephen, dealt with Haggard and me in some stanzas which I would have given much to have written myself. They breathed a prayer for better days when: - ' The world shall cease to wonder / at the genius of an Ass, / And a boy's eccentric blunder / Shall not bring success to pass: / when there stands a muzzled stripling, / Mute beside a muzzled bore: / When the Rudyards cease from Kipling / and the Haggards Ride no more'." Kipling further stated "It ran joyously through all the papers. It still hangs faintly in the air and, as I used to warn Haggard, may continue as an aroma when all but our two queer names are forgotten." Subsequent to Stephen's "To R. K.", Kipling went on to win the 1907 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first English language writer to win the Prize. ["Lapsus Calami" means a slip of the pen and Haggard, of course, is H. Rider Haggard.] A Very Good copy in considerably better condition than any other copy we ever have seen and rather scarce as such. We have never seen or heard of another copy in the original dust jacket. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

Boston: Henry G. Peabody,, 1891 & 1893. A Collection of One Hundred Views. Photographed by ? With Descriptive Sketches by George A. Stewart. [together with;] Representative American Yachts, 1893 Supplement. Photographed by ? With Descriptive Sketches by William E. Robinson. Landscape folio (268 x 330 mm). Modern dark blue half morocco, matching sand-grain boards, title gilt to plain spine, compartments formed by wide gilt rolls, double rules to the spine and corner edges, marbled endpapers. Housed in a striking drop-back box with a wooden spine and board edges with decorative "trunnel" dowels, red and black morocco labels to the spine, central panels of the boards of sail-cloth, blue moiré silk lining. 110 high-quality photogravure plates in a range of tints. Text leaves lightly browned, occasional mild fingersoiling, a few minor knocks to the box, one dent to the lower edge of the front "board", but overall very good indeed. First editions, extremely uncommon OCLC lists just 6 copies of the first, all in the United States, 2 copies of the 1893 supplement and a few copies of subsequent portmanteau editions. A superb collection of images of some the great yachts of a Golden Age of American boat-building. Missouri-born and Dartmouth College-educated, Peabody initially embarked on a career as an engineer, but after a year joined the studio of photographer Alexander Helser in Chicago, making photography his lifelong profession. Thereafter he based himself in Boston, where he specialized in marine photography publishing The Coast of Maine (1889) and the present works. In 1893 he was commissioned by the Notman Studio to travel to British Columbia via the Great Northern Railway, and in 1896 he became photographer to the Boston and Maine Railroad. A successful trip to Mexico in 1899 with journalist and urban planning expert Sylvester Baxter to record Spanish colonial architecture ? Spanish-Colonial Architecture in Mexico, (1901?2), with illustrations from Peabody's photographs ? resulted in his joining the Detroit Publishing Company, one of America's biggest producers of picture post-cards. For them Peabody was based in Pasadena, where he remained even after the firm folded in 1924. Until his death in 1951 he regularly photographed the National Parks, and his lantern-slide and filmstrip shows were used to promote the railway company-backed 'See America First' campaign.

        LEAVES OF GRASS

Mount Vernon, NY: The Peter Pauper Press, n.d. . Commemorative edition limited to 1100 hand-numbered copies, this being copy 22. With woodcuts by Boyd Hanna, printed directly from the block. Printed on mould-made paper specially produced for this book by the Hurlbut Paper Company. Folio, very handsomely bound in the publisher’s half brown morocco over patterned boards decorated in a “grass” motif, elaborately designed lettering in gilt on the spine.. In the original slipcase of stiff boards covered by blue paper and with a cream paper lettering label printed in brown. [viii], 400, [3]. A fine and bright copy essentially as pristine and mint internally, the binding in excellent condition, only the slipcase shows some light wear. An especially pleasing copy. A BEAUTIFUL PRINTING OF THIS CORNERSTONE WORK IN AMERICAN LITERATURE. This very attractive edition of LEAVES OF GRASS, arguably the greatest work of poetry by an American author contains the complete poems following the arrangement of the edition of 1891-1892. Hanna’s powerful charcoal-style illustrations in burnt umber are both a pleasing and a moving addition to this great work of poetry. The Peter Pauper Press had great influence on the Fine Press Movement in America. Their works are an excellent combination of quality type, printing, artwork and materials. This production of Whitman’s great work is a truly impressively designed printing and may well be the finest achievement of the Press. This edition of LEAVES OF GRASS contains the final revisions of Whitman’s body of poems---he died shortly before the release of the first issue in 1892 ---and has been the format for most standard editions since. Whitman’s LEAVES OF GRASS portrayed America at the crossroads between an old world, soon to be caste off, and the new world of our future present. “Always the champion of the common man, Whitman is both the poet and the prophet of democracy. The whole of LEAVES OF GRASS is imbued with the spirit of brotherhood and a pride in the democracy of the young American nation. In a sense, it is America’s second Declaration of Independence: that of 1776 was political, this of 1855 intellectual. ...The poems are saturated ‘with a vehemence of pride and audacity of freedom necessary to loosen the mind of still-to-be-formed America from the folds, the superstitions, and all the long, tenacious, and stifling anti-democratic authorities of Asiatic and European past’. To the young nation, only just becoming aware of an individual literary identity distinct from its European origins, Whitman’s message and his outspoken confidence came at a decisive moment. “LEAVES OF GRASS was Whitman’s favorite child. From the time of its original publication...until the year of his death, he continued revising and enlarging it. If (his) reputation has fluctuated over the years and his position among, if indeed not at the head of, the list of great American poets was not assured until some time after his death, there was never any doubt of the matter in his own mind. ‘I know I am deathless’, he wrote. ‘Whether I come to my own today or in ten thousand or ten million years, I can cheerfully take it now, or with equal cheerfulness I can wait.’ Time has vindicated his conviction.” PMM

        Autograph Musical Quotation Signed.

      - The Hungarian-born conductor led the New York Philharmonic from 1891 and was considered one of the greatest Wagnerians of his day. AMuQS, 1p, 6½" X 4½", n.p., 1894. Very good. Moderate even age toning, with couple of mounting traces on verso. At center, the maestro pens a bold "In Remembrance of the / New York Philharmonic Season, / 1893-94. / Anton Seidl / Conductor." Above this, at the upper left, he pens three measures of music, identifying them beneath as "From the New World. (Dvorak.)." At the upper right, he pens two measures of music, identifying them beneath as "Siegfried Idyll. (Wagner.)." Seidl conducted the premiere of Antonin Dvorak's "From the New World" in this very season -- 1893 -- making this an especially choice and timely example, a single item incorporating the most famous premiere with which he's associated and the composer with which he's most often associated. Very scarce. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
