Cuba, 1891. [28] leaves, various sizes. Eighteen manuscript leaves and ten printed forms completed in manuscript. Some browning and chipping, with occasional worming and paper loss, sometimes affecting text. Several documents with contemporary Cuban institutional ink stamps. Good plus. A collection of twenty-eight death reports and other notices for Cuban slaves and freedmen from the second half of the 19th century. The vast majority of the notices report a death or burial, giving a brief description of the slave or other Cuban person of color, usually including skin tone, country or region of origin, owners or relations if known, cause of death (which include illnesses such as typhoid and epilepsy), and give the date. Most documents are accomplished entirely in manuscript, however there is a significant portion of the group that consist of completed printed forms, both written in quite legible hands. The printed forms note the transfer of the bodies to the cemetery. Several other notices, such as that of a baptism, are also included. While the documents span nearly half of the 19th century, the preponderance date from the 1860s and 1870s. An interesting collection that sheds light on the Cuban bureaucracy surrounding slavery, which continued on the island until 1888.

Philips' Handy-Volume Atlas of London

London: George Philip & Son, 1891. Containing a large scale street plan in 55 sections, on a scale of three inches to the mile of London and suburbs including the whole of the County of London. With special maps showing the Railways of London, the Geology of the London district, The Thames from Kew to Oxford, Richmond and neighbourhood, Epping Forest; and the plans of St.Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, the Zoological and Kew Gardens, Windsor Park and Oxford. Also a directory of Public Buildings, Museums and Art Galleries, Theatres and other places of amusement, Clubs, Hospitals etc. together with a complete index of 11500 streets, squares, parks, railway stations etc. The construction of this atlas is interesting in so far as the sections were never sown but glued only to the mull which also underlays the pastedowns. All the sections have now become cleanly detached which actually helps the ease of use because each double page spread can be laid flat to view. For the moment we intend to leave it this way but will reinstate should a buyer so desire. This atlas is an amazing reference source and extremely scarce.. Limp Cloth. Very Good. 180x110mm.

        Tess of the D'Urbervilles

Three volume, first issue set in original cloth, conforming to the textual issue points noted by Purdy. Re-sewn and re-cased, with the cloth furbished and new endpapers inserted, in similar style to the originals. The books are tightly and squarely bound, the gilt is faded and the corners and spine ends are bumped and rubbed, with minor tears to the cloth, volume 2 looks to have had a label removed from the front board, most likely from a circulating library. The text blocks are slightly toned, with minor foxing and one or two marks, but they are free from inscriptions and in the main clean. Hardy's most famous novel and his favourite, a superb read, though only marginally less gruelling than 'Jude the Obscure', first editions are quite uncommon in the original cloth.

Capital: Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. Translated from the Third German Edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling and Edited by Frederick Engels.

First American printing. Large 8vo. xviii, 506, (52) pp. Publisher's maroon buckram, gilt lettered to the spine, black ruled and lettered to the upper board, patterned endpapers. Neat repair to the front endpaper, very good. The first volume of Karl Marx's groundbreaking work was published in German in 1867 with a second edition in 1873. The author died before the third edition could be issued with Engels stepping in to bring it to completion in 1883 using Marx's notes for his extensive revisions for the earlier first French edition. Engels compiled and edited Volumes II and III from Marx's papers and these appeared in 1885 and 1894. In this period Engels was also able to oversee this translation of the first part, its first appearance in the English language. The translation was carried out by Moore, well connected in British socialist circles, he translated the Communist Manisfesto a year later under Engels editorship. He was ably assisted by Aveling - the partner of Eleanor Marx, the youngest daughter of the author, who was also enlisted to check the quotations used in the work. The first edition with an American imprint appeared in 1889, published by Appleton though it was printed at Aberdeen University Press from Swan Sonnenschein's first edition, itself printed in Perth, so this particular edition is the first to have been printed in the US. Interestingly, Engels in his preface writes of Marx intending for there to be an American edition in his lifetime, but that nothing came of it "for want of a fit and proper translator".

        The Picture of Dorian Gray

London: Ward Locke & Co, 1891. First edition. Fine. An excellent copy of the first UK edition and the first complete edition. Preceded by the abridged Lippincott Magazine edition (and the abridged Ivers & Co. piracy). Offered here is the trade edition, as the book was also issued as a signed, limited edition of 250 copies. With the error on p. 208 "nd" for "and." In a lovely, modern full morocco binding by Asprey Bindery. An excellent copy internally with all edges gilt and marbled end-papers. The author's only published novel and a gothic masterpiece. A complex psychological study of a man who fully embraces an hedonistic world-view, seduced by the idea of ageless beauty. Drawing on a rich literary tradition, including: "Faust," "Jekyll and Hyde," and Shakespeare, among others, Wilde's sensational novel met with moral censure from all sides. However, it quickly became closely associated with the aesthetic movement, which espoused that art and literature need only be beautiful, not send a moral or sentimental message. Modern critics and readers agree that "Dorian Gray" now stands within the very top tier of literary efforts. The book also had a profound impact on Wilde's own life, since a copy was lent by Lionel Johnson to his cousin Lord Alfred Douglas, who begged to be taken to meet the author. Thus Wilde saw his own fictional character come to life. Fine.
