A Study in Scarlet [A Sherlock Holmes Novel].

London: Ward, Lock, Bowden and Co., 1891.. SECOND ENGLISH EDITION, being the first fully-illustrated edition. Octavo., pp.224 + (24) catalogue. Printed on high quality paper. Bound in publisher's quarter scarlet cloth, gilt titles to spine, beige buckram boards titled in red, patterned end-papers, top edge gilt. With several black and white in-text and full-page illustrations. Moderate wear, age-toned to backstrip with some fraying at ends, boards are quite bright, text block a little shaken in the case, browning to endpapers. A very good copy, housed in a custom-made leather-spined clamshell box. The publication of 'A Study In Scarlet' is as follows; The first appearance was in Beeton's Christmas Annual, [November 1887] FIRST EDITION (in book form, with six line drawings) published July 1888 (reprinted March 1889). SECOND EDITION (with 40 illustrations) published December 1891. NB; Confusingly, the second edition has a printed leaf noting the edition as the 'Third Edition, Illustrated'. This is because the Beeton's Annual is listed as the first edition, thus the 'first' edition of 1888 becomes their 'Second edition' and the second becomes the 'third'. The bibliography as set out above is correct; the Beeton 'edition' being an appearance, and not the first edition in book form. The same rule applies to other Sherlockian titles such as 'The Sign of Four', (which first appeared in Lippincott's Monthly) and 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' (first appearing in the Strand Magazine).

Contribute [to THE STRAND MAGAZINE]; The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, (all Doyle), Martin Hewitt, Investigator (Arthur Morrison), etc. Volumes I to X.

London: George Newnes, 1891-1895.. Large octavo, with illustrations. 10 volumes. Original magazine parts bound in half-yearly volumes of morocco-backed pebble-grained cloth, with full gilt backs, marb;ed edges and coloured endpapers. Some light occasional thumbing and marking within; bindings a little rubbed, minor wear to endcaps. An attractive copy in a pleasing vintage leather binding. Contains the first appearance of all the above mentioned Sherlock Holmes stories, plus 'The Adventure of the Cardboard Box' (vol.5, 1893) which was not published in book form until 'His Last Bow' (1917). Several of these Holmes stories feature far more illustrations (notably by Sidney Paget) than in book form, and in some (such as 'Cardboard Box ') the illustrations are exclusive to 'The Strand'. Doyle also contributes the historical caper 'The Exploits and Adventures of Brigadier Gerard' (vol. 8,9,10). The set also includes science fiction from Jules Verne; 'Dr Trifulgas' (vol 4, 1893), and 'An Express of the Future (vol 10, 1895). Volumes 7-8 feature the entire first series of cases for the consulting detective Martin Hewitt; probably the chief rival of Sherlock Holmes- indeed Morrison's ingenious crime stories were commissioned by 'The Strand' entirely due to an appetite for Doyle imitations. A superb literary magazine.

COLLECTION OF ALsS, regarding his reading tours.

1891-1893 All letters written in a clear hand in black ink, signed (one or two with initials) & dated.A collection of fifteen letters and two memoranda, all written by Charles Dickens junior to his Lecture Agency, regarding his various engagements to read publicly from his father's works. Most of the correspondence refer to venues and fees, and in some places to the actual content of the readings. The majority are relatively brief, confirming some point of detail of arrangements. Typical of the correspondence is a letter of July 31, 1891: 'Dear Sirs, Unfortunately I am engaged for Nov. 4 in Scotland and could not possibly get to Banbury on the 5th ... You will see that I suggested the 5th Nov. for Ayr ...'. One letter, dated 19 January 1892, is rather more forthright than the others: 'The essence of my programmes - which I have now given nearly 500 times in all parts of the United Kingdom and America - is that they should consist of two parts, each complete in itself, and I cannot get up an entirely new sort of thing for Stalybridge.' Dickens junior was clearly unaccustomed to altering his well-established routine. Thirteen of the letters are on the headed paper of the Office of All the Year Round, one is from The Metropole Hotel, Brighton, and one is on unheaded paper, from 29 Wellington Street. The memoranda are not addressed. The collection sheds some light on the 'industry' of Charles Dickens, and shows how the Dickens family was sustained through the writer's continued popularity.

Tess of the d'Urbervilles A Pure Woman

Osgood, McIlvaine, London, 1891.. FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST ISSUES (many sets are mixed issue). 3 volumes; octavo, all half-titles present. Elegantly bound in recent half scarlet morocco with five raised bands, spines decorated in gilt, marbled sides and endpapers, top edge gilt. Internally clean, externally fine. An attractive copy. Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Hardy's twelfth published novel, was begun in 1889, eventually serialized in the Graphic (after being rejected by several periodicals) from 4 July to 26 December 1891 and in order to get past magazine censorship, Hardy was forced to cut some of the more sexually explicit passages. When Osgood, McIlvaine published the complete text of Tess in book form (December 1891), critics were both impressed at its brilliance and horrified at its unconventional moral stance. How could a murderess ever be a pure woman, many asked? The novel, which was surprisingly successful, went through a number of editions in the first few years and assured Hardy's financial future. After the notoriety of Tess, and his final novel Jude The Obscure (1895), Hardy gave up trying to write novels to please a mass audience and returned to poetry, his first love.

MY LIFE WITH STANLEY'S REAR GUARD

London: Chatto & Windus, 1891. First Edition. Hard Cover. viii with half-title, (1)pp. ad, double-paged map, 163pp., 32pp. ads at rear, bound in dark blue pictorial cloth stamped in brown, floral endpapers, from the library of William S. Dalliba (1847-1921), a 50 year veteran of American Express in the United States and Europe and was president of the American Chamber of Commerce 1905-1906. He lived and died in Southern California. This is one of the author's more scarce works. Herbert Ward also authored Five Years with the Congo Cannibals, among others. A very nice copy showing light edge wear; near fine. The author, Herbert Ward, was recruited by H. M. Stanley to rescue Emin Pasha from the Mahdi. This expedition, including the rear guard, was not successful; there were a number of casualties. Consequently, Ward and others felt they had been maligned for their participation in the venture. So this is Ward's account and his contribution to the history of European intervention in Africa.

Asexualization as a penalty for crime and reformation of criminals: A paper read before the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, February 27, 1888

Cincinnati: [Printed for the author by] W.B. Carpenter & Co., n.d. (ca. 1891-1892). First Edition in book form. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. 8 pp. Original drab printed wrappers (newly stitched; inner hinges mended with Japanese tissue). Preserved in a mylar sleeve. One of the first American medico-legal works advocating the asexualization of all convicted criminals, of whatever class, thus arresting their procreation and the descent of their respective vices of constitution. The work was widely read and often cited among pioneering asexualization advocates. Rare in private ownership: ours is the only copy currently on the market. "The first widely cited advocate of sexual surgeries as a solution to complex personal and social problems, and therefore an author we can justifiably identify as one of the founders of the American sterilization movement, was Orpheus Everts, the superintendent of the Cincinnati Sanitarium. [In the present paper] Everts explained how he had 'given the subject of emasculation a good deal of attention in the course of twenty years' constant association with, and study of, one of the several defective classes of society.' He believed that castration, while not a proper penalty for rape, was appropriate for those who were convicted of crimes that indicated 'constitutional depravities that are recognized as transmissible by heredity.' A law that allowed for the surgical asexualization of certain criminals would, he argued, 'eventuate in an effectual diminution of crime and reformation of criminals.' Everts offered a long list of claims to support his assertion that castration would deter prospective criminals, remove the power of confirmed criminals to rape again, and 'diminish the number of the defective classes of society, by limiting, to the extent of its application, the reproductive ability of such classes.' Most of his supporting claims emphasized the basic animal nature of humans, using Darwinian language about 'the struggle for existence, in which the fittest, most capable, survive; and the unfit, deficient, perish.' He concluded by contrasting asexualization with the death penalty, which 'goes beyond the necessities of the case or the requirements of Nature and destroys the man.' With execution as a widely accepted means of punishment, castration seemed a much less drastic intervention." (SOURCE: Mark A. Largent, "Breeding Contempt: The History of Coerced Sterilization in the United States," Rutgers University Presss, 2011, pp. 12-14). The pamphlet represents a fascinating conjunction of the legal and medical professions in the late 19th-century, for which arguments continue until the present day. According to the Everts, "Surgical asexualization of all criminals convicted of offenses that, circumstantially considered, indicate constitutional depravities that are recognized as transmissible by heredity, is not only practicable, but expedient, for the protection of society against the ever-impending danger of invasion by the 'savages of civilization,' known as the vicious, criminal, or defective class, and would, properly enforced by law, eventuate in an effectual diminution of crime and reformation of criminals." "For purposes of intimidation [castration] presents features second only in degree of repulsiveness and terrifying power to the death-penalty itself. For the purpose of reformation it presents features more promising than any other known method, because it is in accordance with the great facts recognized by science, that all feelings, desires, purposes, and consequently all conduct, is definitely related to antecedent conditions of living mechanisms, and may be permanently modified by permanent modifications of such mechanisms or organs. But the most important of all the features of this proposition to asexualize all constitutionally depraved convicts is that which promises to surely, however slowly, diminish the number of the defective classes of society by limiting, to the extent of its application, the reproductive capability of such classes. For this purpose it has no practicable competitor." First issued in the journal "Medical News" (vol. 52, no. 13) on Mar 31, 1888, this represents the first edition in book form. The text was here reprinted by the author in response to the "many applications" he had received for it, which on p. 8 he states were occasioned by the arguments of John B. Hamilton, who retired as Surgeon-General of the United States in 1891 (thereby more accurately dating the present pamphlet, wrongly assigned by NLM to "1888").
