        LAUREN FORD COLLECTION

      - FORD,LAUREN. COLLECTION. We are pleased to be able to offer this interesting collection of Lauren Ford material including special copies of books, original art and more. Lauren Ford (1891-1973) was not only an award winning illustrator of children's books but she wrote them as well. According to her mother, she began to draw at the age of only four and eventually studied with F.V. du Mond and George Bridgman. She began professionally by illustrating her mother's books and dust wrappers (her mother was noted children's author Julia Ellsworth Ford). She first collaborated with her mother on Imagina which was illustrated by Arthur Rackham. In 1923 she illustrated entirely on her own, her mother's book Pan and Santa Claus. In 1926 she held her first one man show at the Feragil Gallery in New York which sold-out. Ford is perhaps best known for two books, the Ageless Story, which was a Caldecott Honor title in 1940, and the Little Book About God about which Mahoney and Whitney wrote: "The artist is considered a modern Breughel and the book has the quality of the handmade books of the Middle Ages" (See 5 Years of Children's Books p.18, 148-9). In Illustrator's of Children's books p. 242, Mahoney and Whitney comment that with the publication of the last mentioned books "it is as if Botticelli's angels found themselves dressed in blue gingham in a Connecticut farmhouse and feeling perfectly at home there. And with it they have lost none of their beauty though translated into a homely modern setting." Her art hangs at the Metropolitan in New York, Washington's Corcoran, Art Institute of Chicago and other major museums. Following are the details: -- A BOOK OF FUNNY ONES - AN ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT. This item features 38 watercolor illustrations plus text done for an unpublished book by Ford (possibly not complete). Oblong 8vo on paper, penciled title page dated 1908, reading "Pictured by L.F., versified by S.F." (most likely Ford's father whose name was Simeon). The illustrations themselves are signed by Lauren and many are dated 1897 which would represent her earliest work! According to the dust wrapper blurb from Lauren Ford's Christmas Book "her mother is the authority for the statement that Ford began to draw at [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Parke (1857-1893), an Irish-born physician, joined the Egyptian Army in 1881 and served in the Tel el-Kebir campaign the following year, becoming director of the Army Cholera Hospital at Helwan, south of Cairo, in 1883, and leading the naval brigade at Abu Klea, an engagement in the expedition to relieve Gordon at Khartoum, in 1885. He was living quietly in Alexandria when Stanley, passing through, recruited him as medical officer for the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. His detailed account, in large part transcribed verbatim from his journals, acknowledges the controversy which greeted Stanley on his return to London, but concludes by "saying farewell to a leader whose sagacious forethought and unflinching determination carried us through a series of difficulties which, I believe, no other living man would have been able to battle with so successfully" (p. 512).

2 p.l., 124 pp. Large 8vo, cont. red cloth-backed marbled boards, spine gilt. [Paris]: Rapilly, [1891]. [with]: (-). Catalogue de Dessins anciens, Architecture, Décoration, Ameublement, Orfèvrerie…Dont la Vente aura lieu…les samedi 21, lundi 23, mardi 24, mercredi 25 février 1891… 4 p.l., 104 pp. 8vo, orig. printed wrappers (spine slightly defective). [Paris]: M. Delestre & S. Mayer, [1891]. The rare auction catalogues of Bérard's library and drawing collection, one of the most important assemblages of architecture and decorative arts of its time. An established architect, Bérard (1838-90), inherited the foundations of these collections from his father, André Denis (1806-73), who pioneered the formal study of historical architecture and design. The two sales fetched a total of 164,774 francs, an impressive sum for the period. Alfred de Champeaux, an early historian of decorative arts, composed the Preface for the second sale, which provides valuable information on the evolution of the collections from father to son. The first catalogue lists 1005 lots, many of which are composed of dozens of items. It is novel in its appreciation of all forms of art and books depicting European architecture and decoration from antiquity. It also offers works by Lepautre, Du Cerceau, Bullant, Marot, Meissonnier, and many other important architects and artists of the 17th-19th centuries. Much of this catalogue is annotated in various contemporary hands which provide personal accounts of the bidding and comments on several lots. At the end, pricelists have been tipped-in. The second of 585 lots features work by celebrated artists and architects such as Du Cerceau, Delaune, Gillot, Huet, Le Pautre, Percier, Soufflot, etc. Priced in pencil throughout in a contemporary hand. Nice copies. ❧ I: Lugt 49648.

        Across East African Glaciers.

London: George Philip & Son,, 1891. An Account of the First Ascent of Kilimanjaro. Translated from the German by E. H. S. Calder. Large octavo. Original green cloth over bevelled boards, spine lettered in gilt and decorated in black, gilt title and pictorial block of Kilimanjaro in black to front board, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, green surface-paper endpapers, binder's ticket of Leighton, Son, and Hodge to the rear pastedown. Mounted chromolithographic frontispiece, 8 mounted photographic plates, 12 photogravure plates from watercolours by E. T. Compton after photographs by the author, 3 folding colour maps, wood-engravings to the text. Extremities lightly bumped and rubbed, rear board faintly soiled and very gently bowed, mild cockling to the mounted frontispiece, short closed tear to fore edge of pp. xiii/xiv (gathering unopened). An excellent copy, crisp and fresh, with notably bright plates retaining their rich tonal contrasts. First edition in English of this landmark in mountaineering literature, describing the first ascent of Kilimanjaro, originally published in German the previous year, and "a most handsome volume" (Neate), illustrated with a series of atmospheric mounted photographs and watercolours after photographs; copies also noted with multicolour blocking to the front board. Meyer had already made two unsuccessful attempts at scaling the mountain when he returned in 1889 with Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller, painter Ernst Platz, and a well-organised support team, establishing advance camp at 4300 metres and deciding to go by the south-eastern slope. Setting off on 3 October at 1 am, they took nine hours to reach the Ratzel glacier which had blocked Meyer's progress on the first attempt, and which they now scaled in four gruelling hours to reach the rim of the crater, 150 metres below the summit, but with time and strength running out they returned to advance camp to try again three days later. "This time the route was clearly marked and the previously cut ice steps had held their shape. The rim was reached in six hours, and at exactly 10.30 am on 6 October 1889 they reached the summit at what Meyer called 'Kasier-Wilhelm-Spitze' (now known as Kibo) … With Purtscheller's help, various scientific observations were carried out and the massif was mapped for the first time. Meyer and Platz then remained for several weeks more in the vicinity of the mountain and examined the relatively unknown north and west sides of the Schira plateau. Meyer returned to Germany to considerable public acclaim … As an authority on East Africa, Meyer through his writings profoundly influenced German attitudes towards its colony and in 1905 he was given charge of the Landeskundlichen Kommission des Reichskolonialamtes" (Howgego).

A pair of photographs of a Melbourne house and garden taken when new and sometime later.

      - n.p. [188-?] Two albumen prints on photographer's printed mounts; the mounts 248x304mm, the images 155x209mm and 150x211mm. The mounts damaged and stained, the second photograph with some spotting; a small blotch on the first. Unusual: a pair of professional house portraits taken from the same spot a few years apart. In the first the comfortable bungalow is brand new and the bare garden is laid out and optimistically stars three tree ferns. In the second the garden is established but for the poor tree ferns and the owners are proud to be on display showing off house, garden and industrious maid. A curious feature of this house is what must be a mock stone exterior, should make it easy to identify if it still exists. Lind's address on the later photo here is 91 Chapel Street, Windsor. Davies and Stanbury place him at 915 Chapel Street, Prahran, in 1891 but I think that's a transcription error.

Album of 48 Color Plates, one double paged, Paris-Toilette, Daydou Fils

Daydou Fils. Imprimerie Lafontaine & Fils, Paris 1891 - Folio, 43 by 32 cm. 48 hand-colored plates, one double paged, followed by nine double paged plates, on thin paper, of the same fashions shown in black and white. Paris-Toilette was a fashion magazine issued monthly which would appear to have been heavily oriented towards such color plates, but what we have here is not issues as such but rather a collection of the plates issued by the magazine during the Spring months, and perhaps a little earlier, of 1891. The magazine itself is hard to come by, with the only copies located at the Met, the Danish National Library and Penn State, according to OCLC First Search. (Nothing comes up at the BNF when we search "Paris Toilette Daydou", strangely enough.) The images show somewhat generic looking beautiful women of the era in elaborate, gorgeous gowns. Joints repaired. Fraying and wear to cloth, and moderate wear overall. A few small closed tears to the color plates, and substantial repair to one of the black and white double plates. A very good, tight copy First edition in English. This was in fact Von Wissman's (1853-1905) third expedition to Africa, but his second in command: he had previously accompanied the 1881-2 German African Society expedition from Luanda to the Lualaba under Paul Pogge, and the following year was invited by King Leopold of Belgium to undertake a survey of the southern basin of the Congo. After a short convalescence on Madeire, he "accepted an invitation to explore to the northeast of the River Lulua. Returnign to Léopoldville in 1886, he ascended the Congo, turned into the Kasai and ascended the river to Luluaburg. His first excursion took him into the territory of the hostile Baluba tribesmen on the Buschimanie River, a tributary of the Lubliash. On a second he succeeded in crossing the Sankuru River … he made his way to Nyangwe, the familiar trading centre on the Lualaba, from where he proceeded to Lake Tanganyika and trekked southward to arrive at the northern tip of Lake Nyasa. By an established route down the Shire and Zambezi rivers, he reached Quelimane in 1887 and from there returned to Europe via Zanzibar and Egypt" (Howego). For his efforts he was personally appointed Reichskommissar for German East Africa by Otto von Bismarck. His account, "somewhat reminiscent of Henry Stanley's experiences" (Czech), was first published in German the previous year.

        Max Ernst.

Max Ernst (* 2. April 1891 in Brühl - + 1.

Pre-Raphaelite Art- Georgie Gaskin] Original Pencil Drawing for a Laurence Hodson's Wedding by the wife of Arthur Gaskin, Bronze Medal, 1891

      - Offered here is a superb original Pre-Raphaelite style drawing for the wedding invitation of renowned printer, collector and philanthropist, Laurence Hodson and Mary Elizabeth Belliss. The drawing is executed by Georgie Gaskin, before she married Arthur Gaskin, the latter a noted artist and illustrator and ally of Arts & Crafts and the Morris Movement. One matte, with two openings, an original pencil drawing signed G. C. France, i.e. the artist's maiden name before she married Arthur Gaskin. The wonderfully crafted and drawn invitation is for the wedding of Mary Elizabeth Belliss to Laurence Hodson.Illustrated with a border of interlaced sweet pea vines and blossoms, with cherubs holding each of the four corners of the central panel bearing the names and the location of the event, surrounded by the motto: "Poets are all who feel great truths and tell them. And the truth of truths is love." Matted together with a a small original woodblock print in red and black by Arthur Gaskin, inscribed by the artist with a Christmas greeting to Mr. & Mrs. Laurence Hodson. Laurence W Hodson (1864-1933), founder of Birmingham University and Chairman of the Wolverhampton Art and Industrial Exhibition of 1902, was an ardent admirer, patron and friend of William Morris and his circle. Although he was neither artist nor craftsman himself, he was a good friend of the Morris family, Sydney Cockerell (the secretary of the Kelmscott Press). Arthur Gaskin and his wife Georgie, were both talented artists and were widely known in art circles. Hodson lectured on the work of his friends, and was even sent a set of the 87 glass slides of Sir Edward Burne-Jones’s illustrations for the Kelmscott Chaucer for use in one of his lectures. In fine condition. (The invitation drawing measures 5 1/2 by 7 inches, the reproduction is slightly reduced to 4 3/4 by 5 3/4 inches, and the Christmas greeting measures 4 1/4 by 7 inches). On verso, the drawing is inscribed by the artist with a denotation for exhibition, winning Bronze Medal: "Georgie E. Cave France/ Bronze Medal 1891 S.K." A wonderful piece of art and association.

An excellent copy, crisp and fresh, with notably bright plates retaining their rich tonal contrasts. Mounted chromolithographic frontispiece, 8 mounted photographic plates, 12 photogravure plates from watercolours by E. T. Compton after photographs by the author, 3 folding colour maps, wood-engravings to the text. The rim was reached in six hours, and at exactly 10.30 am on 6 October 1889 they reached the summit at what Meyer called 'Kasier-Wilhelm-Spitze' (now known as Kibo) With Purtscheller's help, various scientific observations were carried out and the massif was mapped for the first time. Meyer and Platz then remained for several weeks more in the vicinity of the mountain and examined the relatively unknown north and west sides of the Schira plateau. Meyer returned to Germany to considerable public acclaim As an authority on East Africa, Meyer through his writings profoundly influenced German attitudes towards its colony and in 1905 he was given charge of the Landeskundlichen Kommission des Reichskolonialamtes" (Howgego).         THE TERRITORIAL TOPIC...SEPTEMBER 24, 1891. Vol. 3, No. 8 [caption title]

Purcell, Indian Territory: H.T. Miller, 1891. Large folio newspaper. [8]pp. Previously folded, with some small separations along old fold lines. Several small chips and closed tears around edges. Tanned, but else clean. Nearly very good. A rare account of the second Oklahoma land rush in 1891, as reported by an important Indian Territory paper printed by American Indians. This second land run occurred on Sept. 22 and 23, 1891 in an attempt to claim lands from the Iowa, Sac and Fox, Potawatomi, and Shawnee reservations, as well as the area around the town of Tecumseh in what would become Pottawatomie County, that were being opened to settlement by the federal government. The paper contains reports from various locations across the newly available territory and also states: "The fact that thousands of 'sooners' have been on the ground for days is sure to cause trouble. Everyone will claim that everyone else is a 'sooner.' It will be a much worse condition of affairs than that which followed the opening of Oklahoma." THE TERRITORIAL TOPIC was established in 1889 by Henry T. Miller, who had brought his printing plant from Kansas to Purcell in Indian Territory. It was the third newspaper printed in the Chickasaw Nation. "The TERRITORIAL TOPIC espoused and was an ardent supporter of the interests of the intermarried disenfranchised citizens of the Chickasaw nation, and for this fact, and also because it was an excellent medium of news, the paper attained a wide and influential circulation" - Foreman. A very rare example of newspaper printing from Indian Territory. Copies of the TOPIC are recorded in only four institutions by OCLC, and none outside Oklahoma and Kansas. Not in Gilcrease-Hargrett.

Schöne Halbleder Bände der Zeit 42 x 31 cm Only edition of the first facsimile of Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks preserved in the Institut de Paris, finely done and only in a small number of copies distributed. The complete set of six volumes. These documents by Leonardo are to be found at the Institute de France in Paris, and comprise twelve pa-per manuscripts, some bound in parchment, others in leather, and others still in cardboard. They are in a variety of sizes, the smallest being Codex M (10 x 7 cm) and the largest Codex C (31 x 22 cm). They are conventionally identified by a letter of the alphabet, from A to M. Various subjects are covered: military art, optics, geometry, the flight of birds, hydraulics. The majority of the pages can be dated, presumably, to the period between 1492 and 1516. After Leonardo's death in 1519 Francesco Melzi, his favourite pupil, brought many of his manuscripts and drawings back to Italy. Fortunately, of Leonardo's vast output, over five thousand pages of drawings and no-tes have come down to us, in his characteristic "mirror-image" hand-writing, running from right to left. But this huge mass of writings, undoubtedly the largest collection of the entire Renaissance, has endured many vicis-situdes following Leonardo's death. In fact, Leonardo's manuscripts are today nothing like the way they appeared and were grouped together during his lifetime, or even when they passed into the hands of his faithful disciple, Francesco Melzi. It was Melzi's heirs who, after his death in 1579, began to scatter the material. Having no idea of their impor-tance, they initially stored Leonardo's drawings and manuscripts in a loft, later giving parts of it away or sel-ling sheets cheaply to friends and collectors. Already in 1630, the Barnabite Antonio Mazenta speaks of the dispersal of the Leonardo manuscripts, and singles out Pompeo Leoni, a sculptor at the court of the King of Spain, as one of those chiefly responsible not only for losing part of the collection, but even worse, for rear-ranging the order of ist contents. Indeed, in an effort to sort the artistic drawings from the technical ones, and to put together the scientific notes, he split up the original manuscripts, cut and pasted pages and created two separate collections. One is now called the "Codex Atlanticus", the other the Windsor collection, which contains some six hundred drawings. Using the same method, Leone went on to create at lest four more volumes. Upon Leoni's death, his heirs brought part of the manuscripts back to Italy, where they were purchased by Count Galeazzo Arco-nati who, in 1637, donated them to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana where they remained until 1796, the year of Napoleon Bonaparte's arrival in Milan. Napoleon ordered the manuscripts to be transferred to Paris, but in 1851 the Austrian government requested their return. Only the Codex Atlanticus was actually returned, while the other twelve manuscripts, marked with the letters A to M, remained in Paris, and were regarded as lost. Other manuscripts stayed in Spain and then went their different ways. Others remained undiscovered until 1966, when they were found quite by chance in the archives of the National Library of Madrid.
