Les cahiers d'André Walter - Oeuvre posthume

First edition in trade, one of the 20 numbered copies on Japan, draw of head with 20 China. The first edition, published by Perrin, was judged incorrect by André Gide and he had it destroyed destroyed, only about sixty copies of the press service escaped.Binder in blue half-basane, back with four nerves adorned with golden floral motifs, marbled paper plates, guards and counterplates of paper to the vat, speckled slices, Contemporary binding.Precious autograph signed by André Gide: A Albert Mockel because he asked for it (which is a flat lie). Andre Gide. I, the undersigned acknowledge (the lie) AW "on a first page of false title.Second autographed autograph dedication of the author by André Gide, also to Albert Mockel, on another page of false title: "To Albert Mockel because he is my friend, His authentic André Gide".An astonishing "double" copy on Japan, with two pages of false title, two pages of justification of the draw (No. 39 and 25 on 20 Japan numbered 21 to 40) and two title pages. This peculiarity seems elucidated by this signed autograph letter of André Gide of three pages, addressed to Albert Mockel and mounted on tab after these duplicate pages, in which it seems that the dedicatee received from André Gide two autographed copies of this work and that he has placed the two dedications in the same copy astonishingly.         THE TERRITORIAL TOPIC...SEPTEMBER 24, 1891. Vol. 3, No. 8 [caption title]

Purcell, Indian Territory: H.T. Miller, 1891. Large folio newspaper. [8]pp. Previously folded, with some small separations along old fold lines. Several small chips and closed tears around edges. Tanned, but else clean. Nearly very good. A rare account of the second Oklahoma land rush in 1891, as reported by an important Indian Territory paper printed by American Indians. This second land run occurred on Sept. 22 and 23, 1891 in an attempt to claim lands from the Iowa, Sac and Fox, Potawatomi, and Shawnee reservations, as well as the area around the town of Tecumseh in what would become Pottawatomie County, that were being opened to settlement by the federal government. The paper contains reports from various locations across the newly available territory and also states: "The fact that thousands of 'sooners' have been on the ground for days is sure to cause trouble. Everyone will claim that everyone else is a 'sooner.' It will be a much worse condition of affairs than that which followed the opening of Oklahoma." THE TERRITORIAL TOPIC was established in 1889 by Henry T. Miller, who had brought his printing plant from Kansas to Purcell in Indian Territory. It was the third newspaper printed in the Chickasaw Nation. "The TERRITORIAL TOPIC espoused and was an ardent supporter of the interests of the intermarried disenfranchised citizens of the Chickasaw nation, and for this fact, and also because it was an excellent medium of news, the paper attained a wide and influential circulation" - Foreman. A very rare example of newspaper printing from Indian Territory. Copies of the TOPIC are recorded in only four institutions by OCLC, and none outside Oklahoma and Kansas. Not in Gilcrease-Hargrett. FOREMAN, pp.125-26. OCLC 13764429.

[zweiseitig bedruckt], 34 und 10 doppelseitige Blätter (recto und verso), [3] Bl. [zweiseitig bedr.], 52 Seiten. Schöne Halbleder Bände der Zeit 42 x 31 cm Only edition of the first facsimile of Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks preserved in the Institut de Paris, finely done and only in a small number of copies distributed. The complete set of six volumes. These documents by Leonardo are to be found at the Institute de France in Paris, and comprise twelve pa-per manuscripts, some bound in parchment, others in leather, and others still in cardboard. They are in a variety of sizes, the smallest being Codex M (10 x 7 cm) and the largest Codex C (31 x 22 cm). They are conventionally identified by a letter of the alphabet, from A to M. Various subjects are covered: military art, optics, geometry, the flight of birds, hydraulics. The majority of the pages can be dated, presumably, to the period between 1492 and 1516. After Leonardo's death in 1519 Francesco Melzi, his favourite pupil, brought many of his manuscripts and drawings back to Italy. Fortunately, of Leonardo's vast output, over five thousand pages of drawings and no-tes have come down to us, in his characteristic "mirror-image" hand-writing, running from right to left. But this huge mass of writings, undoubtedly the largest collection of the entire Renaissance, has endured many vicis-situdes following Leonardo's death. In fact, Leonardo's manuscripts are today nothing like the way they appeared and were grouped together during his lifetime, or even when they passed into the hands of his faithful disciple, Francesco Melzi. It was Melzi's heirs who, after his death in 1579, began to scatter the material. Having no idea of their impor-tance, they initially stored Leonardo's drawings and manuscripts in a loft, later giving parts of it away or sel-ling sheets cheaply to friends and collectors. Already in 1630, the Barnabite Antonio Mazenta speaks of the dispersal of the Leonardo manuscripts, and singles out Pompeo Leoni, a sculptor at the court of the King of Spain, as one of those chiefly responsible not only for losing part of the collection, but even worse, for rear-ranging the order of ist contents. Indeed, in an effort to sort the artistic drawings from the technical ones, and to put together the scientific notes, he split up the original manuscripts, cut and pasted pages and created two separate collections. One is now called the "Codex Atlanticus", the other the Windsor collection, which contains some six hundred drawings. Using the same method, Leone went on to create at lest four more volumes. Upon Leoni's death, his heirs brought part of the manuscripts back to Italy, where they were purchased by Count Galeazzo Arco-nati who, in 1637, donated them to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana where they remained until 1796, the year of Napoleon Bonaparte's arrival in Milan. Napoleon ordered the manuscripts to be transferred to Paris, but in 1851 the Austrian government requested their return. Only the Codex Atlanticus was actually returned, while the other twelve manuscripts, marked with the letters A to M, remained in Paris, and were regarded as lost. Other manuscripts stayed in Spain and then went their different ways. Others remained undiscovered until 1966, when they were found quite by chance in the archives of the National Library of Madrid.         Album of 48 Color Plates, one double paged, Paris-Toilette, Daydou Fils

Paris: Daydou Fils. Imprimerie Lafontaine & Fils, 1891. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio, 43 by 32 cm. 48 hand-colored plates, one double paged, followed by nine double paged plates, on thin paper, of the same fashions shown in black and white. Paris-Toilette was a fashion magazine issued monthly which would appear to have been heavily oriented towards such color plates, but what we have here is not issues as such but rather a collection of the plates issued by the magazine during the Spring months, and perhaps a little earlier, of 1891. The magazine itself is hard to come by, with the only copies located at the Met, the Danish National Library and Penn State, according to OCLC First Search. (Nothing comes up at the BNF when we search "Paris Toilette Daydou", strangely enough.) The images show somewhat generic looking beautiful women of the era in elaborate, gorgeous gowns. Joints repaired. Fraying and wear to cloth, and moderate wear overall. A few small closed tears to the color plates, and substantial repair to one of the black and white double plates.

        November Boughs [Presentation Copy]

Philadelphia: David McKay, Publisher, 23 South Ninth Street, 1888 [but 1891]. Tall, thin 8vo: 140,[2]pp, with portrait in the text but no frontispiece photograph inserted (as issued). Original dark green V cloth, beveled covers, spine titled in gilt, upper cover stamped in gilt with tile and Whitman's facsimile autograph, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, wove end papers, laid front fly leaf. "These sheets are probably the 400 copies printed in May, 1891. . . . It seems probable . . . that after Whitman's death his executors had these sheets and the remainder of Good-Bye My Fancy [a copy of which we also have on offer] bound in uniform, but separate, bindings." (BAL 21430, printing 3). With occasional underlining and marginal commentary in pencil on first 18 leaves. Book plate of Virginia bibliophile Christopher Clark Geest to front paste down. Inscribed on front fly leaf to Courtney Lemon (his stamp in blue ink to title page) in 1902 by Whitman executor Horace Traubel: "To / Courtney Lemon / with heartfelt / remembrances & with / peaceful joy from Horace Traubel," with note in Traubel's hand beneath inscription, "W. W. assisted with g[reen] binding of N. Boughs for distribution among his friends. It was never printed for the market."A superb survival with fine association, square and tight, cloth clean with bright gilt, pages fresh and unmarked. Myerson A12.I.c. "One of the most remarkable things about Whitman is that as his health deteriorated, he increased his publishing activity. Part of the reason was his new circle of friends in Camden and Philadelphia . . . most importantly, Horace Traubel, trained as a typesetter and an active publisher and printer his whole life. He became Whitman's close friend and disciple when he was a teenager, and, as he grew up, he became Whitman's emissary to the Philadelphia/Camden printing and publishing community. . . . During the last four years of Whitman's life, from March 1888 to Whitman's death in March 1892, he recorded his daily conversations with Whitman (now published in nine volumes of well over 5000 pages), among which are detailed publication histories of Whitman's last books. The first book we have this record for is November Boughs, Whitman's attempt once again to merge poetry and prose in one book . . . [W]hen Traubel asked him when he was going to bring it out, Whitman's response was telling: "it will come out, and before long, God willing, and you, Horace Traubel, willing: for I shall need you to help me through with this expedition. . . ." Traubel would now be his lifeline to ongoing publishing activity, and it turned out he was more than up to the task. The book contains 64 poems and a lot of prose, including "A Backward Glance O'er Travel'd Roads" and an essay on Elias Hicks. The poems are striking reflections on old age, and everything about this book . . . suggests a kind of November of the soul, the self heading into winter and death. Whitman worried about the binding of the book, ordering Traubel to make changes in the lettering when he saw the first sample. . . . For the third printing, bound after the poet's death, his executors moved to a deep green cloth . . . " (Folsom, Whitman Making Books/Books Making Whitman) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly.         The Captain's Daughter]

      A. I. Mamontov and Chardon-Wittman Paris plates only for V. G. Gote Moskva 1891 - Tall 8vo (24.7 x 17 cm). pp. 156, [2], including title, pp. [2] half-title with limitation page on reverse bound at the end, portrait frontispiece after Wright and 12 full-page engraved plates after Pavel [Petrovich] Sokolov, all engraved by Alphonse Lamotte and protected by tissue guards; occasional light spotting. Later amateur maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Fresh copy of this limited illustrated edition, one of 900 copies printed on vélin paper, signed by the publisher Gote (Gautier), out of a total edition of 1,000. The Captain's Daughter, originally published in 1836 in the literary journal Sovremennik, is a fictional account of the Pugachev Rebellion, which took place between 1773 and 1775. Emelian Pugachev, who had already become something of a folk hero by Pushkin's time, was a Cossack from the Don region (nowadays Ukraine) who led an explosive uprising against Catherine the Great. Pugachev was one of several Russian rebels who claimed to be Tsar Peter III. In reality, Peter had been murdered six months after ascending the throne, in a coup that brought his wife, Catherine, to power in 1762. Legend had it, however, that Peter had been rescued from this assassination attempt by loyal Christians. The revolt involved a brutal and extended assault on the fortress town of Orenburg and at one point even threatened Moscow. However, Pugachev's forces had little chance in the long run against the much larger and better-fortified imperial army; Pugachev was eventually captured, taken to Moscow in a cage, and beheaded. Pushkin's novel takes the form of a first-person family memoir written by the soldier and friend of Pugachev Petr Grinev. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Events in the Taeping Rebellion.

London: W. H. Allen and Co. Ltd.,, 1891. Being Reprints of MSS. copies by General Gordon in his own Handwriting. With Monograph, Introduction, and Notes by A. Egmont Hake. Octavo (212 × 134 mm). Contemporary prize-binding of red calf by Relfe Brothers, raised bands gilt to spine, black morocco morocco label to second compartment, the rest gilt-tooled with arabesque cornerpieces and central floral lozenges, rolled foliate border gilt to boards, crest of Bancroft's School, Woodford, to front, marbled edges and endpapers, gilt roll incorporating alternate palmette, fleur-de-lys and flower motifs to turn-ins. Photogravure portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard, folding sketch-map hand-coloured in outline to rear. Prize plate dated 1902 to the front pastedown. Faint soiling to boards, tips bumped and slightly worn, short closed tear to map fold. A very good copy. First and only edition. Gordon's ingenious defeat of the Taiping rebellion earned him the nickname Chinese Gordon and made him a totem of the cult of the Christian military hero which had emerged after the Indian Mutiny. "In 1862 he was summoned to join the British, French, and imperial Chinese troops protecting the international settlement at Shanghai from the Taiping insurgents … A private force grandiloquently named the Ever Victorious Army was … mustered at the expense of Shanghai's foreign merchants. On 24 March 1863 Gordon (promoted brevet major on 30 December 1862) took command of this mutinous rabble of 4000 Chinese officered by a gallimaufry of European and American adventurers. He pitched them against the insurgents, who formidably outnumbered them and were at least as well equipped … He defeated them by the mobility of his forces, particularly the swift and flexible manoeuvring of armed steamboats along the extensive medieval canal system in the Suchow (Suzhou) region. This unorthodox warfare, combined with the ascendancy which Gordon established over his men, enabled him to crush the rebellion in eighteen months … Like T. E. Lawrence he had a genius for guerrilla warfare and for leading destitute, ill-trained forces" (ODNB). The editor, Hake (1849-1916), was a relation of Gordon's and also wrote a popular biography, The Story of Chinese Gordon (1884) and other works, which contributed to his lifetime apotheosis and remain important.

        The Little Minister

Book condition is above excellent. No Mars, markings, discoloration or tears. Original end-tissue still enact. The book looks as new. First Edition. Very rare!!Sir James Matthew Barrie is one of the writers whom everyone has heard of, but few know the actually sad, somewhat tragic story behind the tale. Like his most famous literary creation; Peter Pan, the biography of J.M. Barrie is filled with mysteries. It is relatively unknown, for example, that 'Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up' was never a book at all, but rather a 'fairy play. The book that is now famous as the story of Peter Pan was actually written after the play, at the request of Barrie's publisher's Hodder and Stoughton in 1911, and later abridged in 1915.J M Barrie was, by all accounts, one of life's innocents. He was devoted to the study of myth, and to the power of fairy stories in particular. This coupled with a dedication to an imaginative childhood led him to create works that centred around boy's stories, fairy stories, or children's nonsense tales. Although well connected (he was made a baronet by King George the V of England), Barrie remained unhappy, or least unlucky in life. His early literary career was as a playwright, especially of comic plays which, although well received, never achieved the great success that he desire. He was also unlucky in love as his first marriage failed, and, with a broken heart he turned to wandering London's parks where he first met the Llewelyn Davies family, the inspiration for Peter Pan and Wendy. For the collector, Barrie wasn't so long ago as to make collecting original editions impossible. A First Hardcover edition of Peter and Wendy, for example (1911, Hodder and Stoughton) can still be found for as little as five hundred US dollars if you are willing to accept a little wear and possible restoration work. A fine copy would cost upwards of a thousand US dollars. If you are looking for a more select edition of some of Barrie's work, then consider his early novel Auld Licht Idylls, (1888 Hodder and Stoughton) which is considerably rarer and shows Barrie's first experiments with the novel form. These can be found at auction in good condition, for as little as six hundred US dollars.

Signed By Convocation December 20th, 1661, and Attached to the Act of Uniformity, 1662 (13 & 14 Charles 2. Cap. 4).

London: Longman & Co., et al / Eyre & Spottiswoode et al, 1871 / 1891. (2 volumes). First volume: [11], [544] pp., folio (16 x 10.5 inches), contemporary dark brown cloth with blindstamped ornaments to boards, gilt spine title. Second volume: [7], 544, [16] pp.; folio (15 x 10.5 inches), bound in same style as first volume. First volume with presentation inscription by Lady Georgina Home-Drummond dated June 1913 and bookplate of George Stirling Home Drummond on front pastedown. Binder's ticket of James Truscott & Son, London on rear pastedown. First volume neatly rebacked preserving all original materials, front inner hinge starting, but heavy sewing tapes holding firm, some foxing to endpapers, text mostly unopened. Second volume: Moderate edgewear, mostly to spine ends and corners, some finger smudging to to title and intro pages, text unopened. Photo-lithographic facsimiles of the original 17th-century volumes. The first book represents a true facsimile of the "Booke of Common Prayer" printed by Robert Barker in 1636 and edited, corrected, and amended by bishops of the church in 1661 and approved by Convocation as the official text of the revised Book of Common Prayer. This book, with all the marginalia, notes, redactions, etc. was preserved in the House of Lords where it is generally known as "The Convocation Book." The second volume, published in 1891 as a companion to the foregoing, is a true facsimile of the fair copy manuscript that was prepared in 1661 from the "Convocation Book" and formally attached to the Act of Uniformity in 1662. This manuscript is generally referred to as the "Annexed Book" and was the textual source for the published 1662 edition of the Book of Common Prayer, the text which remains the official prayer book of the Church of England. (See Ratcliffe, Edward C. "The Booke of Common Prayer, its making and revisions mdxlix - mdclxi" p. 109-110). Very good.

        The Picture of Dorian Gray

Ward, Lock & Company, London., 1891. First edition. Royal octavo. pp viii, 334. Original parchment-backed boards with gilt design by Charles Ricketts, bevelled edges. Top edge gilt. Number 176 of 250 copies signed by the author. From the library of Sir Winston Churchill: laid in is a slip of paper on which is written, ''de M. Winston Churchill - Château du Muguet''. The Château du Muguet, in the Val-de-Loire region of France, was the setting for the penultimate session of the Anglo-French Supreme Allied Council on 11th and 12th June, 1940. Even as the Nazis were at the gates of Paris, Churchill flew to southern France in one last attempt to try and stiffen the resolve of the French military and promise them every assistance he could muster. Although de Gaulle was receptive to Churchill's ideas for a heroic defence of Paris, Pétain was already resigned to defeat. It is poignant that Churchill chose this book to accompany him on his mission, as France had long stood as a symbol of the individual's rights to freedom. Indeed, in the Preface to this book Wilde defends the artist's right to freedom of expression. The book was among effects sold at auction sale of the Château du Muguet's contents . The slip of paper with its inscription is contemporaneous with Churchill's stay and is likely to have been written shortly after his hurried departure from the Château to indicate that the book had been inadvertently left behind .In his book The Literary Churchill, Jonathan Rose quotes Wilde's son Vyvyan Holland: 'Winston Churchill was once asked whom he would like to meet and talk with in after life and he replied, without hesitation, ''Oscar Wilde'' '. In the 1890's Wilde was very friendly with Churchill's mother Jennie and described her as ''both beautiful and brilliant''. Churchill himself was given on occasion to quoting from Wilde's plays, both in private conversation and public speeches.Inner hinges cracking but tight. Spine rubbed, chipped and splitting. Covers a bit marked and rubbed. Preserved in a recently custom-made quarter red morocco folding box by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, Churchill's choice of binders for his own books for presentation.

"It leaves you out of the modern life, so banal, so cruel, and so heavy, and I thank you for having taken me from your frightful environment by your very curious book"Exceptional autograph letter from Joris-Karl Huysmans to the poet Stuart Merrill. Huysmans gives his impressions on one of the masterpieces of Merrill, the collection of poems entitled The Pleasures: Thyrses - Sceptres - Torches , published in 1891.The symbolic accents of Merrill's work seem to have profoundly affected Huysmans, who never ceased to praise the poems of a " very ardent beauty " of his colleague. The Fastes join the famous decadent and refined esthetics of Huysmans; A striking parallel can be drawn between the "tendency towards artifice" of the character of Des Esseintes in A Rebours , and the " artificial lilac and more charming, finer than nature " acclaimed by Huysmans in the letter. The mutual admiration of Merrill and Huysmans goes back to the publication in 1887 of the first collection of Merrill, Les Gammes . Huysmans, to whom Merrill dedicates the Nocturne poem, discovers at the same time this "whispering Verlaine" and his "subjugating" poetry (letter from Huysmans to René Ghil). They both attend the Tuesdays of Mallarmé in his apartment in the Rue de Rome, a must for symbolist writers.Evidence of a brilliant literary complicity between the two men, this letter full of poetry evokes the finest symbolist writings of the end of the century. s.l.

Imprimerie Nationale, Paris., 1891. First edition. Quarto. 308 pages. Six-page Introduction ("Documents Épigraphiques recueillis dans le Nord de l'Arabie par M. Charles Doughty") by Ernest Renan. Original blue wrappers, printed label on spine.Contains "Note de. M. Doughty sur son Voyage" which despite the French title is in English (29 pages); also "Transcription et Traduction des Inscriptions Nabatéennes de Medaïn-Salih (in French and Hebrew) (18 pages), "Transcription des Notes contenues dans les Planches" (in English) (9 pages). 57 plates, these being facsimiles of notes and drawings of rubbings which Doughty made from carved rock inscriptions, maps and drawings, 9 folding photogravures of inscriptions. The reason this was published in France was that Doughty had tried without success to sell the Nabatean inscriptions he had collected to the British Museum and the Royal Geographical Society. Meanwhile the French philologist Ernest Renan was in the process of preparing a work on Semitic inscriptions for the Academie des Inscriptions and offered Doughty the opportunity of publication. Renan later deciphered these, using Doughty's transcriptions. A number of the plates in this book, which are of superb quality, were used for later editions of Arabia Deserta. The rest of the volume is devoted to E. Amélineau's "Notice sur le Papyrus Gnostique Bruce".Wrappers chipped and torn at edges. Spine a little cracked and discoloured. Apart from minor water-staining to the lower margins of four maps, internally a bright and clean copy. Very good. Very scarce.

FUJI SANJU ROKKEI & EDO YONJU HAKKEI: THE THIRTY-SIX VIEWS OF MT. FUJI & FORTY-E

      - [Edo 1891]. A brocade silk covered album, Oban size, all edge gilt, with a total of 65 fine color prints, including 2 title pages, and one dedication print, book size 24.5 x 35.5 cm., 4.15 cm. thick. A stunning group of his most famous prints well represented. Hiroshige II [1826-1869] and III [1843-1894] were one in the same, a pupil of the most famous & great Ando Hiroshige. Using his master's name plus his old name Ichiryusai, he was the adopted son of Hiroshige I and was a very skilled painter, who actually painted along side & with the master until his master's death in 1858. After that, Ichiryusai specialized in railroad prints depicting these new innovations recently imported from the West around Yokohama, as well as issuing many series of beautiful prints. In his later years, he executed a most beautiful and exquisite set of his own interpretation of his master's most well-known series of prints showing Mt. Fuji & the celebrat- ed places around Edo. This was not done to merely copy the master's works, but rather as a sincere Confucian tribute to his adopted father [& now father-in-law] and master. He took each of the master's views & repainted them in pastel colors with great control & precision. Some of the more delicate places such as rainbows and clouds behind a flock of birds were actually brushed on by hand, a technique rarely ever done. The wood blocks used were of the highest quality, a majority of which were center cuts & these have left a most beautiful wood-pattern in the print. This example shows 28 prints from the Fuji Sanju Rokkei and 35 from the Edo Yonju Hakkei series, with the title page from each present. There is a dedcation & memorial print to Hiroshige I from his fai- thful son and pupil. This print is most similar to one found as the frontispiece to the book by E. F. Strange: THE COLOR PRINTS OF HIROSHIGE, London [1925].Its clear that this print by Kunisada [who is Toyokuni I] was used as a model by Ichi- ryusai, as it differs in what the master is holding.Kunisada shows him holding his rosary beads, while Ichiryusai shows the master with his Fude [brush pen] and paper in hand.Ichi- ryusai and Kunisada had collaborated to issue a series of 36 prints:EDO JIMAN or THRIY-SIX PLACES OF WHICH YEDO IS PROUD. Ichiryusai has taken much care to represent the most wonder- ful views of Fuji & Edo with great skill.A majority of these prints are certainly well-known to the art world at large, as well as to Japanese print collectors. Many of these prints prints show up in the usual references. Some of the more famous Edo views are showing a falcon in winter, rain on the river bridge, storks, cat view in Asakusa, busy street scenes, Asakasa temple & lantern in snow, river scenes &c. Some Fuji views show many snow scenes, seasonal views, cherry blossoms, a majority show water and mountains, charming set of prints. Alternate title is MEISHO EDO HYAKKEI. See L. Roberts: A DICTIONARY OF JAPANESE PRINTS ARTISTS p.44-45 for background on Hiroshige I,II & III. R. Lane: IMAGES FROM THE FLOATING WORLD p.232-254, most all of the prints in this album are listed under Hiroshige I's series: MEISHO EDO HYAKKEI: ONE HUNDRED FAMOUS VIEWS OF EDO. Beautifully bound in tradition- al brocade silk-gilt brocade, with prinnts on both sides of an accordion folded album. A L W A Y S R A R E !

        Die Sinnlichkeit.

      - Radierung, nach dem gleichnamigen Gemälde, signiert. 22:17,1 cm.

Rarissime. Reliure curieuse, mais attachante. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Region of the Eternal Fire. An Account of the Petroleum Region of the Caspian in 1883 ... New Edition.

London, Allen, 1891. 8vo. Original red pictorial cloth; pp. xxii, [2], 406, [2, advertisements], mounted Woodbury type photographic portrait-frontispiece with tissue guard, maps and wood-engraved plates; light marking to binding, spine a little faded; internally, apart from light spotting to a few illustrations, a very clean and fresh copy. Revised and updated edition, first 1884. Marvin was an important commentator on the Russian threat in Central Asia to British interests in India. His fluency in Russian and personal acquaintance with several of Russia's leading generals gave him an insight into the 'Great Game' lacking from other writers of the time. The present work deals with the Russian oil fields of Baku, the geopolitics of the entire region, and the threat of Russian gains towards India through Afghanistan. Marvin had travelled the region between the Black and Caspian Sea extensively and updated this edition with the developments since 1883.

London, Frederick Warne and Co., 1891. 8vo. 2 volumes. First edition. Casati's 10 years with Emin Pasha in Equatoria involved him in the events surrounding the Mahdist uprising which led to the death of General Gordon at Khartoum and the march by Henry M. Stanley for the relief of Emin Pasha. During this time, Casati also explored the region and made important discoveries in the Welle basin of modern north-east Zaire. These were not without personal risk to himself and his account contains details of his imprisonment at the command of King Chua in Unyoro, condemnation to death and eventual escape. A classic of African travel literature, Ten Years in Equatoria remains an important work.

(Brun-Durand).
