A Study in Scarlet [A Sherlock Holmes Novel] With forty illustrations by Geo. Hutchinson

London, Ward, Lock, Bowden and Co., 1891. London, Ward, Lock, Bowden and Co., 1891, 1891. SECOND ENGLISH EDITION, being the first fully illustrated edition. 8vo., pp. 224, with several black and white in-text and full page illustrations. Printed on high quality paper. Bound in old red straight-grained morocco-backed boards with gilt titles. Some acceptable wear and soiling to covers, one chip to headcap, single name 'Alwood' to pastedown. A used but very good copy of this important edition. The publication of 'A Study In Scarlet' is as follows; The first appearance was in Beeton's Christmas Annual, [November 1897] FIRST EDITION (in book form, with six line drawings) published July 1888 (reprinted March 1889). SECOND EDITION (with 40 illustrations) published December 1891. NB; Confusingly, the second edition has a printed leaf noting the edition as the 'Third Edition, Illustrated'. This is because the Beeton's Annual is listed as the first edition, thus the 'first' edition of 1888 becomes their 'Second edition' and the second becomes the 'third'. The bibliography as set out above is correct; the Beeton 'edition' being an appearance, and not the first edition in book form. The same rule applies to other Sherlockian titles such as 'The Sign of Four', (which first appeared in Lippincott's Monthly) and 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' (first appearing in the Strand Magazine). De Waal. Green & Gibson [A1c]. Listed in '100 Books That Shaped World History' [Raftery, 2002].

Die Evangelisch-Lutherische Gemeinde zu Jalta ihrem lieben Pastor Keller den 20. Januar 1891. Unikat: Ledermappe mit 59 Originalfotografien zum Abschied des Theologen und Schriftstellers Samuel Keller aus der Gemeinde der Krimdeutschen.

Jalta 1891 - Ledermappe, 6 Bll. Capital. The Humboldt Library of Science

New York: The Humboldt Publishing Company, 1891. First edition thus. Karl Marx's magnum opus, Capital, published in four monthly parts as part of the Humboldt Library of Science. Translated from the third German edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling; edited by Frederick Engels. Preceded by the first American edition in 1889 by Appleton. & & The first part with spine and rear wrapper replaced in expert facsimile (final page of ads lacking), the other three parts showing wear and some chipping along the spines, but complete and without repair. Paginated consecutively throughout the four parts with title page, table of contents and introduction in the first part then pp. 1-126; 127-254 in v. 2; 255-382 in v. 3; 383-506 in v. 4. & & A scarce set with just one copy in the auction record: Gallerie Bassenge, April 14, 2011 selling for 3,480 euro, equivalent to approximately $5,032 at 2011 market exchange rates. In case you missed it in 2011 or, if like everyone else you were more concerned with keeping your job than German auctions, here's your second chance at a copy for almost no premium, and with the additional advantage of a stunning full gilt slipcase with lined chemise. Lacking from the bibliographies and with just two institutional copies, one in the Library of Congress and one in the Marx-Engels Institute in Berlin.& & One of the most profound and influential thinkers of any age, Marx is known not only for championing socialism, but also for developing the social sciences, important work in economics and political philosophy. "The Athenaeum reviewer of the first English translation (1887) later wrote: ‘Under the guise of a critical analysis of capital, Karl Marx';s work is principally a polemic against capitalists and the capitalist mode of production, and it is this polemical tone which is its chief charm';." (PMM 359 for the first edition).

The Club was formed in 1883 by canoeists who had decided that the Humber Estuary conditions required heavier and more seaworthy craft, giving birth to the canoe sterned Humber Yawl design, originally an open boat, but by the begining of the 20th-century, fitted with cabin accommodation.         Three etchings by John Sloan for the series of etchings entitled Westminster Abbey

n.p., N.P. 1891 - John Sloan (1871-1951) was forced to drop out of school at the age of 16 due to the mental breakdown of his father. He got a job as a cashier at Porter and Coates, a local stationery store where he met A. Edward Newton, a fellow employee. When Newton established his own stationery business in 1890, he hired Sloan. Sloan designed greeting cards and calendars, and etchings which were used in various gift books published by Newton. Peter Morse, in his catalogue of Sloan prints, describes one of John Sloan's earliest efforts as this Westminster Series of 13 etchings and provides great detail, noting that only one complete surviving example of the booklet and etchings has survived to his knowledge which is held by The Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Delaware Art Museum holds signed copies of the etchings through the kind donation of Helen Farr Sloan. Any of these early Sloan works are extremely scarce. We have the following three etchings from this series: Morse 13. The West Front. Morse 17. Saint Erasmus' Doorway. Morse 21. The Poets Corner. Morse notes that A. Edward Newton's name does not appear anywhere in the booklet or on the etchings, but assigns them to Newton on their similarity to other projects executed by Sloan for Newton. The three ethings have been removed from an older framing (By Schneider Art Galleries of Seattle) and measure 7 5/8 x 5 7/8 inches with the etching itself varying in size. There are remnants of glue along the top edge of the white outer border where they were mounted and framed. The margins of the outer border are foxed and stained in places. One etching has notes in pencil beneath the etching giving instructions to the framer. The etchings themselves are well preserved.

[Broadside]: Grand Military Entertainment by St. Joseph's College Battalion, Wednesday Eve, Nov. 18, in The College Auditorium

[No place - Rensselaer, Indiana: St. Joseph's College?. 1891?]. Broadside. Approximately 8.5" x 11.75". Old folds, small tears and nicks, old and small pencil name ("Lizzie"), very good. No publishing information, our best guess (and it is a guess, but based on some provenance) is that this broadside is from St. Joseph's College of Indiana, which was founded in 1889 by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood as a secondary school to educate Native Americans.
