The Chronicles of Barsetshire (8 Volumes Complete)

London: Chapman and Hall, Limited, 1891. Octavo, 8 volumes. Original three quarters leather over marbled boards, gilt toolin the the spine, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels. Marbled enpapers. In very good condition. The Chronicles of Barsetshire " revealed a new humorist and type of humour. No such picture of the special features of cathedral society had been given before, nor has anything so good been done since, excepting the corresponding portions of Barchester Towers and the rest of the Barsetshire novels…. These, however, are much more complex, Trollope having discovered that the same gifts which enabled him to portray clergymen were equally available for other classes of society. For humour, Barcester Towers perhaps stands first; for the suspense of painful interest, Framley Parsonage; for general excellence, The Last Chronicle of Barset. They stand at the head of his writings" (Sadleir, 245).

        JOHN SHERMAN AND DHOYA

1891. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1891. Original printed yellow wrappers. First Edition of Yeats's third book, following MOSADA (1886) and THE WANDERINGS OF OISIN (1889). Comprising a novella and a short story, this volume earned Yeats forty pounds at a time when he really needed it. Thirteen years later Yeats wrote that this book was "written when I was very young & knew no better."~This was issued as the tenth volume in Unwin's "Pseudonym Library," both in wrappers (as here) and in cloth. Symons (cited by Wade) stated that the first edition, published in November 1891, consisted of 2000 copies, of which 1644 were in wrappers and 356 were in cloth; however, since the first printing is known to have been done by September 1891, and since the British Library deposit copy and at least two presentation copies (all dated November 1891) were from Unwin's "Second Edition" of this work, it is now widely suspected that Symons's 2000-copy figure probably encompassed both the first and second printings. Although there were supposedly four times as many copies issued in wrappers than in cloth, today it is these wrappered copies that we find to be more elusive.~This is a near-fine copy, with the leaves entirely unopened. There is quite minor wrapper soil but scarcely any wear, and the first and last leaves have faint tape-stains. Very scarce in this condition. Wade 4.

Improvements in Wind Engines. [British Patent] Number: 19,401. A.D. [Date of Application, 10th Nov., 1891 - Accepted, 12th Dec., 1891].

London, Darling & Son, 1891. 8vo. Disbound. Stamp to p. 1. 1 p + 1 plate.. Scarce original printed patent for the world's first energy-generating wind-mill, the "Blyth Turbine", being the first wind turbine used to convert wind energy into power.Blyth's seminal invention marked the dawn of wind turbine development. Although previously credited with being the first to use a wind powered machine to generate electricity, it is now an accepted fact that the American inventor Charles Brush came second to Blyth and his wind mill. There were, of course wind mills before the time of Blyth, but these were used to pump water or grind grain, and Blyth's groundbreaking invention, described and patent for the first time here, is the first used to convert wind energy into power. Blyth experimentend, prompted by his friend Lord Kelvin, with three different turbine designs, which ultimately resulted in a 10-meter-high, cloth-sailed wind turbine, which was installed in the garden of his holiday cottage at Marykirk in Kincardineshire. He used the electricity it produced to charge accumulators, and the stored electricity was used to power the lights in his cottage, which thus became the first house in the world to be powered by wind-generated electricity. The wind turbine in Blyth's garden is said to have operated for 25 years."The first person to harness the wind to produce electricity was a Scotsman, James Blyth ('America reaps the wind harvest', 21 August). He first consulted his colleague, Lord Kelvin, about the possibility of using a windmill for the purpose. Kelvin thought it would be possible and urged Blyth to set up a large horizontal windmill at his holiday home in Marykirk near Montrose in 1888. Blyth lit his own house and offered to light the streets of Marykirk, but his offer was not accepted because the villagers thought electricity was the work of the devil. He did, however, provide emergency power for the local asylum."         Jenseits von Gut & Boese / Zur Genealogie Moral

      C. G. Naumann. Two scarce second edition Nietzsche titles bound in one. Jenseits von Gut & Boese ~ Edition: Second, Zweite Auflage. ~ Leipzig ~ Druck und Verlag von C. G. Naumann. ~ 1891. ~AND~ Zur Genealogie der Moral ~ Edition: Second, Zweite Auflage ~ Leipzig C. G. Naumann. ~ 1892.. Historical: Nietzsche's two main works probing the depths of ""good"" and ""evil"", moral relativism and investigating the history of morality. Their English titles are ""Beyond Good and Evil"" and ""Genealogy of Morals"" and, as Nietzsche notes on the verso of the title leaf, ""Dem letztveroeffentlichten 'Jenseits von Gut und Boese zur Ergaenzung und Verdeutlichung beigegeban."" Nietzsche here is essentially saying that the ""Genealogy"" is intended to be an elaboration of the ideas in ""Beyond Good & Evil"". Thus, it was very appropriate to bind these two texts together.. SCARCE: Publication of these early editions was privately paid for by Nietzsche and published in his lifetime. Less than 1, 000 copies of each were printed.. Condition: GOOD+. Rebound by an unknown source--but probably contemporary 1890s--in half-calf leather with marbled boards. Gilt rule outlines leather; gilt to one title ""Jenseits von Gut und Boese"" on spine; decorative light green endpapers that are slightly tanned in places and chipped in others (not original end papers); tanning to original pre-title papers; boards chipped and worn at edges; speckled treatment of page ends; title page of ""Jenseits"" tanned and chipped at edges; title page of ""Genealogie"" near perfect with just one smudge; little to no foxing; leather corners and edges of cover beautiful; ""Jenseits"": 269 pps.; ""Genealogie"": 182 pps. + 'Inhalt'.
