London: Privately Printed for Mr. & Mrs. F.T. Davies, 1891. - "A Night in Town" - Probably Louis Wain's Very First Published 'Cat Caricature'[WAIN, Louis, artist]. [DOBSON, Austin, contributor]. A Book of Drawings. By A. Bryan, L. Davis, A.T. Elwes, Harry Furniss, J. Jellicoe, Louise Jopling, J.B. Partridge, Jo. Pennell, R.H. Moor, H. Railton, Hugh Thomson, L. Wain, C. Wilkinson & W. Wilson: with a prefatory poem by Austin Dobson. London: Privately Printed for Mr. & Mrs. F.T. Davies, [1891]. One of a hundred large paper copies on hand-made paper, signed by F.T.W. Davies, the plates individually signed by the illustrators. 43, [1 imprint] pp. Folio (12 7/8 x 10 3/8 inches; 326 x 263 mm.). Original thin white vellum over parchment wrappers. Front cover decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. A near fine copy. The two Louis Wain drawings, each of which is signed by Wain in pencil are: "A Night in Town" and [A Single Cat].From studying the 209 entries in Rodney Dale's A List of Books Illustrated by Louis Wain, it would appear that A Book of Drawings (Dale 20, 1891) was only preceded by Madame Tabby's Establishment (Dale 141, 1886) and Dreams by French Firesides (Dale 56, 1890). We believe that the drawing "A Night in Town" is most probably the very first published Louis Wain 'multi-cat caricature'.Extremely rare - OCLC lists just two copies in libraries worldwide: Yale University Library, CT., and R. G. Menzies Library, ANU, Canberra."Mr. and Mrs. Davies, who are well known for their unsparing efforts on behalf of the poor of St. Pancras, have issued a book of drawings with the same charitable intentions as have been displayed in their concerts. For this purpose they have secured the services of several well-known artists, who have contributed, each with his own especial style, and the result is a recherché book of pictures not often seen. The title-page is by Herbert Horne, and Mr. Austin Dobson furnishes a prefatory poem; the artists who have sent their charitable mites are W. Wilson, H. Railton, J. Jellicoe, A.T. Elwes, Louise Jopling, Joseph Pennell, H. Furniss, C. Wilkinson, A. Bryan, R.H. Moore, J.B. Partridge, Lucien Davis, Hugh Thomson, Louis Wain, and Selwyn Image, who sends a tail-piece. Anyone wishing to make a Christmas or New Year's Gift will help on the good work Mr. and Mrs. Davies are doing by sending for a book. A special large paper edition, limited to 100 copies, printed on hand-made paper, with India proofs of the drawings, and bound in parchment, will also be issued from Wilsford House, 16 Fitzroy-street, London, W., or may be obtained through Mr. Tregaskis." (The British Bookmaker. Volume V. 1891-92)."Until 1890, Louis Wain had made little or no attempt to portray cats as anything other than fluffy animals which, though they slept between sheets, or wrote letters with quill pens, were otherwise recognisably feline. The 'Louis Wain cat' had not yet been born. But in 1890, he began to explore the possibility of the comic cat; cats drawn in human situations - or humans drawn as cats, which amount to the same thing. He insisted that he did not caricature cats, but drew them as he saw them, though his approach makes it clear that he generally saw them as humans. Naturally, then, he studied humans when drawing cats. ' If I want a mild, irresponsible caricature, a grinning cat, then I have to let loose my nature impressions and let myself go on my own account, and it is astonishing what variety one can get in this way, and how one's moods vary from day to day. I have done as many as one hundred and fifty laughing cats at a time, no two being alike. ' There is another way of sketching cats, and this way I often resort to. I take a sketch-book to a restaurant or other public place, and draw the people in their different positions as cats, getting as near to their human characteristics as possible. This gives me double nature, and these studies I think my best humorous work.' The foundations of this approach were laid in 1890. That Christmas, there appeared in Holly Leaves and [Attributes: First Edition]

Dr. Wordsworth (9), bishop of Lincoln. (1) The Guild of Women- Binders was founded by Frank Karslake (who also founded The Hampstead Bindery) in 1898. It operated until 1904 as a loosely-knit federation of women binders from such groups as the Edinburgh Social Union, the Kirkby Lonsdale Handicraft Class, the Chiswick Art Workers' Guild, and Miss Bassett's Leighton Buzzard Handicraft Class for crippled girls, among others. Some of the more outstanding women binders represented by the Guild included Miss Constance Karslake, Miss Edith de Rheims, Florence de Rheims, Miss Helen Schofield, Mrs. Frances Knight, Mrs. Macdonald, Miss Lilian Overton, Miss Gaskell and Miss Edwards. The Guild, together with its counterpart, The Hampstead Bindery, published "The Bookbindings of To- morrow" in 1902, and held both exhibitions and sales of their bindings at Sotheby's. (2) George Augustus Sala was a renown British journalist. In 1851 Charles Dickens accepted his article, "The Key of the Street," for his journal, Household Words. This was the first of many articles that Dickens published over the next few years. In April, 1856, Dickens sent Sala to Russia as the journal's special correspondent. Sala also contributed to the author's next venture, "All the Year Round." (3) Douglas William Jerrold was an English dramatist and writer. He founded and edited for some time, with indifferent success, the Illuminated Magazine, Jerrold's Shilling Magazine, and Douglas Jerrold's Weekly Newspaper; and under his editorship Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper rose from almost nonentity to a circulation of 582,000. The history of his later years is little more than a catalogue of his literary productions, interrupted now and again by brief visits to the Continent or to the country. Douglas Jerrold died at his house, Kilburn Priory, in London on the 8 June 1857 and was buried at West Norwood Cemetery, where Charles Dickens was a pall-bearer. Dickens gave a public reading to raise money for Jerrold's widow. (4) George Hogarth was a Scottish newspaper editor, music critic, and musicologist. He authored several books on opera and Victorian musical life in addition to contributing articles to various publications. From 1846Ð1866 he worked as a music critic for The Daily News, a paper which was founded by Charles Dickens. He had previously met Dickens in 1834 while they were both working for the Morning Chronicle. In 1836 Dickens married Hogarth's eldest daughter Catherine. One of his younger daughters, Georgina, was Dickens' housekeeper, adviser, and, after Dickens' death, the editor of "The Letters of Charles Dickens from 1833 To 1870." (5) Dante Gabriel Rossetti was an English poet, illustrator, painter and translator. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, and was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement, most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. (6) Charles Roach Smith was an English antiquarian & amateur archaeologist who was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and the London Numismatic Society. He was a founding member of the British Archaeological Association. Roach Smith pioneered the statistical study of Roman coin hoards. (7) Mark Lemon was founding editor of both Punch & The Field. He played in the 1851 production of 'Not So Bad As We Seem,' a play written by Edward Bulwer and featuring many notable Victorians (including Dickens). (8) John Ruskin was an English critic of art, architecture, & society. He was also a gifted painter, a distinctive prose stylist, and an important example of the Victorian Sage, or Prophet: a writer of polemical prose who seeks to cause widespread cultural and social change. John Ruskin came to the rescue of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and countered Dickens' dreadful review of Millais' painting 'Christ in the House of His Parents' by defending the young artist.         Photographs of the Milky-Way & Nubeculæ taken at Sydney Observatory 1890

Sydney: for the Observatory, January, 1891. Album of 16 albumen photographs typically measuring 206 x 153 mm., each mounted on stiff card with descriptive verso letterpress, with a title page and short preface by Russell; sporadic foxing yet very good in old green cloth, a little rubbed at the extremities. 19th-century star photography from the Sydney Observatory. Accomplished - and curiously beautiful - album of original star photographs taken from the Sydney Observatory during the late nineteenth-century: Russell's 'a unique published record of colonial endeavour and enterprise of international scientific significance' (Holden). This book was the first of its kind to be published in Australia and results from the purchase of a new photographic telescope which was successfully installed in April 1890. The Government Astronomer Henry Russell advocated the pivotal role of photography in recording new stars, and writes of these images: 'they are believed to be the first of their kind of the Southern Skies, and they present well-known Star Spaces under new conditions, so much so, that in several important respects we must modify the views which had been the outcome of the study of these Star Spaces with ordinary telescopes'. The son of merchant navy officer and colonial entrepreneur Bourn Russell, Henry graduated from the University of Sydney and was director of the Sydney Observatory from 1862-64 before being awarded the title of Government Astronomer in 1870. In this role he also worked as a meteorologist and greatly expanded the infrastructure for collecting weather data in New South Wales. In many respects Russell's career was an extension of the beloved project of Sir John Herschel in mapping the stars and constellations of the southern hemisphere. Where Herschel's 1847 masterpiece Results of Astronomical Observations…at the Cape of Good Hope relied on lithography in reproducing stellar formations, Russell was able to use photography. Hundreds of new stars were revealed in the process. However, photography was not without its challenges as 'the period over which the work was extended has been very unfavourable, the extent of cloud being very much in excess of the average'. Nonetheless, the images are impressive, especially the final plate showing fine detail of the Orion nebula.

A Narrative of Incidents in the Eventful Life of a Physician

Melbourne: M. L. Hutchinson, 1891. Octavo, with the frontispiece mounted photographic portrait and 24 plates, owner inscription to flyleaf; fine in original blue-green cloth. First edition, the superior issue in cloth with mounted photographic frontispiece portrait found only in this issue. Singleton, a Dublin-born physician and philanthropist, emigrated to Victoria in 1851. He practised there throughout the gold rush years, assisting the poor. Rather puritanical, he was in other ways a man of advanced views - supporting women medical practitioners, for example - and he was a key influence on colonial society. He became a gaol visitor, opposing capital punishment and becoming a thorn in the side of John Price, then Governor of Pentridge Prison. Among his major philanthropic achievements were the initiation of the Singleton Bread Fund for the unemployed, the establishment of night shelters for destitute women, a mission to the blind, Widows Cottages in Collingwood, the West Melbourne night shelters for men, the Women's Model Lodging House, and the Retreat for Friendless and Fallen Women (now Singleton House) in Collingwood.

Astrarchia Stephane [Princess Stephanie Bird of Paradise]

Taylor & Francis for Henry Sotheran & Co, London 1891 - A beautiful print from Sharpe's 'Monograph of the Paradiseidae, or Birds of Paradise, and Ptilonorhynchidae, or Bower Birds'. Sharpe's work on the most spectacular of all bird families depicts the birds of paradise in all their glowing splendor, whilst the bower birds are pictured with their elaborately constructed "bowers", surrounded by the shells, bones and other small found objects with which they decorate the bower thresholds in an instinctive attempt to provide the finest backdrop to their highly elaborate courtship displays. R. Bowdler Sharpe was John Gould's assistant for many years and was the only man knowledgeable enough and sufficiently attuned to the famous ornithologist's vision to complete several of his works. Sharpe's comments in his monograph strike a chord with contemporary feelings on the preservation of endangered species. Writing of the then current fashion for decorating women's hats with the feathers of rare Birds of Paradise, he concludes 'What will be said in the future by the civilized world and its scientific investigators when they find that we had the chance of learning the habits of these extraordinary birds, and allowed them to pass out of existence for the adornment of our women-folk, with scarcely a word of protest'. Fine Bird Books (1990) p.142; Nissen IVB 865; Whittel p.663; Wood p.565; Zimmer p.581. Hand-coloured lithograph by William Hart, printed by Mintern Brothers. Very good condition.

Autograph letter signed to his friend and patron, Oskar Grohe

2 pp. Octavo. Dated April 1, 1891. In German (with translation). Regarding the forthcoming first performance of his cantata, Christnacht. "Please be so kind as to let me know directly, or through Weingartner, if the orchestral rehearsals of Christnacht have already started and how they have gone so far. Please also send word as to when the dress rehearsal is scheduled. If only you could get Weingartner to write me a note!" . Wolf's cantata, Christnacht, to a text by August Graf von Platen-Hallermünde, was first performed under the noted Austrian conductor Felix Weingartner (1863-1942) on April 9, 1891 in Mannheim, "the last concert to be conducted by Weingartner at Mannheim before he left to take up an appointment with the Berlin Opera." Walker: Hugo Wolf, p. 285. Apparently conceived as the composer's "answer to Bach's Christmas Oratorio..." "... The first sketches for the work are dated Christmas Eve 1886... In a letter to Oskar Grohe (26 February 1891), Wolf wrote that he had conceived the composition as a portrait of Christ's personality in two manifestations, the child and the ‘Weltüberwinders’, or hero who overcame the world. At the end, these themes and other musical ideas merge and unfold ‘with tongues of flame the dogma of God made man and of salvation’, he told Grohe, adding that if the execution did not keep pace with the concept it was ‘nobody's fault but my own’... Christnacht has much to commend it and many admirable effects in the lengthy orchestral introduction alone... But Wolf being neo-Bachian/Lisztian in huge brass-laden choruses is Wolf being bombastic, especially in the chorus of believers (Platen indicates shepherds here, but this was insufficiently solemn for his purposes, so Wolf told Grohe, hence their new designation as ‘Gläubigen’) and the final chorus, and the work is in consequence not an unmitigated success..." Wolf "intensified the expressive vocabulary of the lied by means of extended tonality and post-Wagnerian declamation while retaining the defining elements of the song tradition he had inherited from Schubert and Schumann. Profoundly responsive to poetry, he incorporated detailed readings of his chosen poems in the compositional decisions he made about every aspect of song: harmonic nuances, tonal form, melodic design, vocal declamation, pianistic texture, the relationship of voice to piano, etc. Seeking an art ‘written with blood’, he went below the surface of poetry – even where his musical purposes were inevitably distinct from the poet's – in order to recreate it in music of remarkable intensity, written, as he once proclaimed, for epicures, not amateurs."         The Flowers of Japan and the Art of Floral Arrangement. With illustrations by Japanese artists.

. Tokyo, Hakubunsha / Yokohama etc., Kelly and Walsh / London, Sampson Low, Marston, & Co., 1891. 35,9 : 26,6 cm. 136 text pages with 26 b/w illustr., 14 full page colour woodblock prints by Yoshitoshi et al, 40 b/w outline plates and colour woodblock illustrated covers.. First edition. - "This beautiful and informative book was the first glimpse most Westerners ever had of the Japanese art of ikebana. - Its author, Josiah Conder, was a British architect invited to Japan at the end of the nineteenth century to help create Japan's first Western-style buildings. Conder remained there for the rest of his life, and his love of the country and its culture inspired him to undertake years of study of Japanese Painting, gardens, and flower arrangement. - Conder's classic text with its eloquent explanation of why certain seasonal flowers should be used, why some are "felicitous" and others "ominous", and how even the simplest-looking arrangement can mean much more than meets the eye has a great deal to say not only about ikebana but about Japan's sense of ceremony and custom. - Richly illustrated throughout, and with sixteen pages of grand color pictures, this new edition of his pioneering work retains the period feel of the original. For modern enthusiasts of ikebana or of more Western-style flower arranging, the book offers a fascinating insight into the sensibilities that helped form the art, In addition, a wealth of written and pictorial information on the various containers used-bamboo tubes, bronze vases, lacquer ware, and baskets-will appeal to those who have an interest in Oriental antiques." (Philadelphia Museum of Art, Library). - Cover slightly stained and edges partly worn, half-title with small tear at upper edge, interior very fine and clean.

        New Light on Dark Africa:

London: Ward, Lock, and Co.,, 1891.. Being the Narrative of the German Emin Pasha Expedition, Its Journeyings and Adventures Among the Native Tribes of Eastern Equatorial Africa, the Gallas, Massais, Wasukuma, etc., etc., on the Lake Baringo and the Victoria Nyanza. Translated from the German by H. W. Dulcken. Quarto. Original red cloth, titles and vignettes of explorers to spine and front board in gilt, black, white, and grey, black endpapers. Frontispiece portrait with tissue guard, 32 full-page plates by Meisenbach, 48 illustrations in text, and one coloured lithographic folding map in rear pocket. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Binding a little soiled and rubbed, spine gently cocked and sunned, spine ends and corners slightly bumped; a couple of small chips and a short closed tear to bottom margin of map, minor split along one fold. Otherwise an excellent copy. First English-language edition of Die deutschen Emin-Pasha expedition published in 1891 in Munich. Carl Peters (1856-1918) was one of the most prominent German colonialists and explorers in the Bismarckian and Wilhelmine periods. In 1884, after a four-year sojourn in London during which he studied British history and colonial policy, Peters returned to Berlin and founded the Gesellschaft fur Deutsche Kolonisation. Following this, he would visit East Africa four times between 1884 and 1892. Initially, the rationale behind Peters' travels in the region was to establish a German colony. New Light on Dark Africa is the account of the third of Peters' journeys to the region, during which he sought to find Emin Pasha, a German explorer thought to be trapped by Mahdist forces in the province of Egyptian Equatorial Sudan. As a result, in 1889, Peters 'set about organizing an expedition to relieve Emin Pasha... But, like that of rival Henry Morton Stanley, Peters's ulterior motive was the acquisition of new territory and access to the upper waters of the Nile' (Howgego). With newspaper clipping concerning Peters from the Times, 20 November 1899, tipped in on rear flyleaf.

Oscar Browning, 1837-1923, was an English teacher and historian. Condition: The binding is loose and split in places, with cracks to the spine.
