35 eigenh. Briefe mit U. und 12 Telegramme.

Berlin, Dresden, Marienbad, Wien u. a., 1891 bis 1896.. Zusammen 70½ SS. auf 58 Bll. Verschiedene Formate. (a. d. Br. v. [Oktober 1896]). Original three quarters leather over marbled boards, gilt toolin the the spine, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels. Marbled enpapers. In very good condition. The Chronicles of Barsetshire " revealed a new humorist and type of humour. No such picture of the special features of cathedral society had been given before, nor has anything so good been done since, excepting the corresponding portions of Barchester Towers and the rest of the Barsetshire novels…. These, however, are much more complex, Trollope having discovered that the same gifts which enabled him to portray clergymen were equally available for other classes of society. For humour, Barcester Towers perhaps stands first; for the suspense of painful interest, Framley Parsonage; for general excellence, The Last Chronicle of Barset. They stand at the head of his writings" (Sadleir, 245).

        In Darkest Africa

New York - Charles Scribner's Sons, 1891. New York - Charles Scribner's Sons, 1891 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An account of the expedition to rescue Emin Pasha, the governor of Equatoria, by the famous Welsh explorer and journalist Sir Henry Morton Stanley. Second US edition. Sir Henry Morton Stanley, was famous for his exploration of Africa and his search for David Livingstone. Upon finding Livingstone, Stanley allegedly uttered the now-famous greeting, Dr. Livingstone, I presumeIn 1886, Stanley led the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition to rescue Emin Pasha, the governor of Equatoria in the southern Sudan. King Leopold II demanded that Stanley take the longer route, via the Congo river, hoping to acquire more territory and perhaps even Equatoria. After immense hardships and great loss of life, Stanley met Emin in 1888, charted the Ruwenzori Range and Lake Edward, and emerged from the interior with Emin and his surviving followers at the end of 1890. But this expedition tarnished Stanley's name because of the conduct of the other Europeans: British gentlemen and army officers. An army major was shot by a carrier, after behaving with extreme cruelty. James Jameson, heir to an Irish whiskey manufacturer, bought an eleven-year old girl and offered her to cannibals in order to document and sketch how she was cooked and eaten. Stanley only found out when Jameson had died of fever. With forty-five plates throughout and three coloured folding maps tucked into pockets on the rear pastedowns of the books (collated complete). Complete in two volumes. Condition: In decorative green cloth bindings. Externally smart, though with some bumping and marks, with some wear to the heads of the spines. Internally, generally firmly bound, although loosening in places, with the front few pages of volume II detached. Front hinges tender. Previous owner's ink stamp to recto of front free-endpaper. Pages are bright, with just some light marginal age-toning and the odd spot. Some closed tears to the maps. Generally a very bright copy of a notoriously hard book to find in acceptable conition. Overall: GOOD..

        NEW GRUB STREET

Smith Elder & Co. , 1891. Smith Elder & Co. , 1891. First edition, first issue with integral title page. Original publisher's green morocco grained cloth, titled in gilt to the spine and black to the upper cover. With two page terminal adverts in volume I as called for by Sadlier. A superb, fine set, bright and crisp with just the most trivial wear to the spine tips and some hairline splits to the hinges. Overall an exceptional set. Regarded as the author's best and most influential work, it highlights the threats and opportunities of mass culture in late Victorian London. The novel has strong autobiographical elements. Edwin Reardon, a gifted scholar, finds some success as a writer, but is determined not to bow down to the pressure of commercialism. His pursuit of the moral and literary high ground and the financial difficulties it leads to is juxtaposed with those who are happy to follow the paths of commercialism and greed and who appear to derive greater success. Issued in an edition of only 750 copies, about half of which were sold to circulating libraries, it is rare encountered in commerce in original cloth, especially in such exemplary condition.         THE LITTLE MINISTER

Cassell , 1891. Cassell , 1891. First edition. Three volumes, all in original cinnamon cloth lettered in gilt on the spines. A near fine set, with the hinges of vols II and III showing a little wear and a couple of trivial marks to the covers, but a generally bright crisp set. Housed in a quarter morocco box. Regarded, critically speaking, as Barrie's best work of literature, this melodramatic work was a great success on publication, vying with Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles for the year's most hotly read and discussed new novel. It was adapted for the stage in 1897 and filmed on several occasions, most notably in 1934 staring Katherine Hepburn. Set in rural 1840s Scotland, the plot focuses class and social issues. The setting is based on Barrie's place of birth, Kirriemuir. Sadlier 167

        Autograph Manuscript (unsigned).

      - This Chicago journalist, essayist and children's poet penned such classics as "Little Boy Blue" and "Wynken, Blynken and Nod." Unsigned AM, 3pp, 7½" X 10" (separate leaves), n.p., n.y. Near fine. This beautifully penned manuscript, in Field's usual incredibly miniscule but highly legible hand, has been superbly bound in full dark brown calf with raised bands, gilt lettering on spine and front board (reading "EUGENE FIELD / ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT / SUGGESTIONS FOR / 'VIGNETTES' / FOR HIS / 'ECHOES FROM THE SABINE FARM' / 1891") inner dentelles, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Very good. Spine (mainly) and edges lightly sunned to golden brown, else tight and lovely. Whoever had this bound, likely around the turn of the 20th century, also had a hand-calligraphed title page created which reads in Gothic letters, "Original Manuscript / Suggestions for Vignettes / For his / 'Echoes from the Sabine Farm." This collection was privately published in 1891 in New Rochelle, New York, and is a parody of Horace's Odes; in 1893 A.C. McClurg and Company published a trade edition. This manuscript consists of a list of 45 numbered subject ideas, starting with "1 -- A bough in leaf, from which is suspended a garland of roses" and ending with "45 -- Two little children singing from the same book." A few others at random: "8 -- Cupid scourging a maiden with a cat-o'-nine tails," "17 -- A birds-eye view of Chicago," "24 -- A smiling babe swinging from a crescent moon," "31 -- A mouse about to enter a baited trap," "38 -- An owl perched beside a tiny sparrow and regarding it yearningly," "42 -- A Roman in a hammock with his head bandaged up." Most unusual and handsome. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
