The Picture of Dorian Gray

London: Ward, Lock & Company, 1891 First edition, first printing with "nd" to page 208, regular issue. Publisher's rough grey beveled boards with white parchment spine, gilt lettering to the front board and spine, Charles Ricketts' butterfly illustrations in gilt to the front board and spine. Very good, with minor toning to the spine and board edges, light crack to the bottom thirds of the otherwise secure hinges, light crack between pages 192 and 193, otherwise intact and study binding, former owner's 1891 inscription to the front free endpaper, hint of minor toning to the page edges, otherwise bright and fresh pages, loss to bottom of page 3. Overall, a remarkably clean and tight copy of an extremely fragile book without any of the usual repairs or restoration. A completely unsophisticated copy of the author's first and only novel. Mason 328. Housed in a custom cloth box with vellum spine. Originally published serially in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in July 1890, is a Gothic novel about the handsome Dorian Gray, who, like Faust, trades his soul for sensual pleasures. Specifically, Gray, who knows his physical beauty will fade over time, wills that his beauty never fade so that he may continue to indulge in worldly beauty indefinitely; instead of bearing the responsibility of his sins, Dorian Gray remains youthful and unblemished while his full-length portrait ages and grows increasingly ugly. Ultimately, Gray realizes that the only way to right his wrongs is to atone for his sins by destroying his own portrait, and, effectively, himself. The Picture of Dorian Gray, considered scandalous in Victorian England, was partially censored by Lippincott's Monthly Magazine and received much criticism from contemporary reviewers. Wilde defended his novel, and even expanded the book form, which, according to Mason, contained "six new chapters, many alterations, and much additional matter." Indeed, Wilde continued to defend himself in this first edition's preface, where he argued that "there is no such thing as an immoral or moral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all.". 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

My Life with Stanley's Rear Guard

London: Chatto & Windus,, 1891. Small octavo (170 x 113 mm). Original dark blue cloth, titles to spine and front board in brown, palm block to front board and publisher's device to rear board, both in brown, grey and white floral endpapers. Lithographic folding map by F. S. Weller. Small bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine darkened and gently cocked, extremities a touch rubbed, minor wear to spine ends and corners, endpapers slightly foxed, margins of text block lightly tanned with occasional soiling, a few corners turned. Otherwise a very good copy. First edition of this firsthand account of the Emin Pasha Expedition rearguard. Ward was recruited by Stanley in 1884 and was a Congo adventurer who had been employed by both the Free State and the Sanford Exploring Expedition. The rearguard was left at Yambuya in 1887 to await supplies and reinforcements from Tippu Tib, but hunger, disease, and warfare forced the rear column to languish "for thirteen months, waiting in vain both for the promised supplies from Tippu Tib and for news of the advance guard", neither of which materialised (ODNB). Ward's account is understandably negative and he considered the rearguard an unmitigated failure.

Black and white photographs of Mozambique c. 1900

The city of Beira was developed by the Portuguese Mozambique Company, which was founded in 1891 as a royal company in this Portuguese colony. In Beira the Company ran the post office & public administration, and founded a bank, but took advantage of local conscripted labor. Beira also played an important role as a key port and railroad terminus for the British land locked territories of Zambesia, Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The Beira Railway was formed in 1892; by 1890 Cecil Rhodes had already pushed into the region around Salisbury (Harare) and the settlers there were demanding dependable transport.& & These photographs date from the colonial period in which the Mozambique Company administered Beira. Photographs taken by C. E. Hogg. Thirteen b&w photographs, 4 3/4 x 3 3/4" with titles handwritten on the verso. The titles are as follows: 'Beira' (a view of the city taken from the Indian Ocean); 'a street in the native village', 'men gathering coconuts', 'mother and child', 'Mozambique natives, the elder age 12 + 2 years married, the younger a rescued slave child'; 'a rescued slave girl'; 'Mozambique' (no further title; photo is of sailboats pulled up on a beach); 'Mozambique' (no title; photo is city harbor, taken from the water looking toward the city); 'hotel proprietor, Beira'; 'Gardens, Mozambique'; 'Mozambique boys'; 'Market, Mozambique'; and 'Mozambique hospital'. A few marks at the corners of some photographs, where they were removed from an album; one photo with a diagonal tear ('Gardens'), o/w quite bright.

Extremities a touch rubbed, minor worm damage to bottom of Volume I joints, margins of text blocks gently tanned. An excellent set. First English-language edition; editions in Italian, English, German, and French were all published in the same year. The Italian explorer Gaetano Casati's (1838-1902) account of his adventures in southern Sudan; he set out for Sudan in 1879 at the request of the Milanese geographical journal L'Esploratore. An early European visitor to Azande and Mangbetu lands, Casati's account greatly expanded contemporary European geographic and ethnographic knowledge of equatorial Africa. However, Ten Years in Equatoria also includes Casati's reflections on various political conflicts, including Emin Pasha's battle against Mahdist forces in Lado and Casati's own run-in with King Kabarega of Unyoro. This set is from the library of Thomas Conant (1842-1905), with his ownership inscription to front flyleaf: "Tho. Conant. Oshawa, Canada. 13 May 1899." Conant was the author of two early modern histories of Canada: Life in Canada and Upper Canada Sketches.

Crozet's Voyage to Tasmania, New Zealand . The Ladrone Islands, and the Philippines in the Years 1771-1772. Translated by H. Ling Roth. With a preface and a brief reference to the literature of New Zealand by Jas. R. Boose

Truslove & Shirley, London 1891 - Octavo, eight photogravure plates, folding plan of outrigger canoe and large folding chart (corner of title page clipped, tear to map repaired with paper tape); a good copy in the original cloth. First English translation. First English translation of Crozet's account of the South Pacific voyage of Marion-Dufresne, who in 1771 sailed to return the Tahitian native Ahutoru, who returned to Paris with Bougainville. The expedition was launched from Mauritius where the traveller Abbé Rochon was stranded; although he was denied permission to sail with the expedition Rochon later edited the present narrative from Crozet's log. The account contains a brief account of the Tasmanian Aborigines and a longer description of traditional Maori life, rich with primary information on food, hunting, warfare, shelter, fishing etcetera. After some misunderstanding Marion-Dufresne and about twenty crew were massacred by the Maori; the present edition contains Rochon's speculations on the cause of the massacre with an additional mid nineteenth-century anecdotal account included. Numerous scattered vignettes clarify issues in the narrative and there are informative appendices: aside from discussion of the massacre there is an appendix on the early literature of New Zealand and another on native canoes taken from Anson's Voyages. The edition was limited to 500 copies. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Autograph Manuscript (unsigned)

This Chicago journalist, essayist and children's poet penned such classics as "Little Boy Blue" and "Wynken, Blynken and Nod." Unsigned AM, 3pp, 7½" X 10" (separate leaves), n.p., n.y. Near fine. This beautifully penned manuscript, in Field's usual incredibly miniscule but highly legible hand, has been superbly bound in full dark brown calf with raised bands, gilt lettering on spine and front board (reading "EUGENE FIELD / ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT / SUGGESTIONS FOR / 'VIGNETTES' / FOR HIS / 'ECHOES FROM THE SABINE FARM' / 1891") inner dentelles, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Very good. Spine (mainly) and edges lightly sunned to golden brown, else tight and lovely. Whoever had this bound, likely around the turn of the 20th century, also had a hand-calligraphed title page created which reads in Gothic letters, "Original Manuscript / Suggestions for Vignettes / For his / 'Echoes from the Sabine Farm." This collection was privately published in 1891 in New Rochelle, New York, and is a parody of Horace's Odes; in 1893 A.C. McClurg and Company published a trade edition. This manuscript consists of a list of 45 numbered subject ideas, starting with "1 -- A bough in leaf, from which is suspended a garland of roses" and ending with "45 -- Two little children singing from the same book." A few others at random: "8 -- Cupid scourging a maiden with a cat-o'-nine tails," "17 -- A birds-eye view of Chicago," "24 -- A smiling babe swinging from a crescent moon," "31 -- A mouse about to enter a baited trap," "38 -- An owl perched beside a tiny sparrow and regarding it yearningly," "42 -- A Roman in a hammock with his head bandaged up." Most unusual and handsome.

Christmas and New Year Greeting Souvenir of Australasia 1891-1892 . Issued by the Officers of the Post and Telegraph Departments

Melbourne & Sydney: Tatchell, Garritty & Dobson, 1891-, 1892. Oblong octavo, illustrated throughout; a very good copy in original decorated wrappers, rebacked with paper spine. A celebration of the Australian Christmas with illustrations by one of the founding members of the Heidelberg School, Walter Withers. Issued as a souvenir by the Post and Telegraph Departments, this charming work includes many portraits of the government officers, together with depictions of their offices (ranging from the Sydney General Post Office to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station). It is further illustrated by many views of Australian cities and landscapes. This is the only recorded publication by the artists, Fred Kneebone and Ernest Ferris, but all three artists have almost equal shares in the production. Walter Withers had first arrived in Melbourne in 1883 but did not settle there until 1888, opening his Melbourne studio in 1891. Produced when Australia began to be hard hit by the depression of the 1890s, the artists would have been glad for the income derived from the production as it was around this time that Withers seriously contemplated returning to England due to lack of work. This work is surprisingly rare with only two holdings in Australian libraries. Formerly in the Ingleton Collection, with his bookplate and shelf number.

        Book of Drawings, A

1891. first edition. A Night in Town" - Probably Louis Wain's Very First Published 'Cat Caricature'[WAIN, Louis, artist]. [DOBSON, Austin, contributor]. A Book of Drawings. By A. Bryan, L. Davis, A.T. Elwes, Harry Furniss, J. Jellicoe, Louise Jopling, J.B. Partridge, Jo. Pennell, R.H. Moor, H. Railton, Hugh Thomson, L. Wain, C. Wilkinson & W. Wilson: with a prefatory poem by Austin Dobson. London: Privately Printed for Mr. & Mrs. F.T. Davies, [1891]. One of a hundred large paper copies on hand-made paper, signed by F.T.W. Davies, the plates individually signed by the illustrators. 43, [1 imprint] pp. Folio (12 7/8 x 10 3/8 inches; 326 x 263 mm.). Original thin white vellum over parchment wrappers. Front cover decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. A near fine copy. The two Louis Wain drawings, each of which is signed by Wain in pencil are: "A Night in Town" and [A Single Cat].From studying the 209 entries in Rodney Dale's A List of Books Illustrated by Louis Wain, it would appear that A Book of Drawings (Dale 20, 1891) was only preceded by Madame Tabby's Establishment (Dale 141, 1886) and Dreams by French Firesides (Dale 56, 1890). We believe that the drawing "A Night in Town" is most probably the very first published Louis Wain 'multi-cat caricature'.Extremely rare - OCLC lists just two copies in libraries worldwide: Yale University Library, CT., and R. G. Menzies Library, ANU, Canberra."Mr. and Mrs. Davies, who are well known for their unsparing efforts on behalf of the poor of St. Pancras, have issued a book of drawings with the same charitable intentions as have been displayed in their concerts. For this purpose they have secured the services of several well-known artists, who have contributed, each with his own especial style, and the result is a recherché book of pictures not often seen. The title-page is by Herbert Horne, and Mr. Austin Dobson furnishes a prefatory poem; the artists who have sent their charitable mites are W. Wilson, H. Railton, J. Jellicoe, A.T. Elwes, Louise Jopling, Joseph Pennell, H. Furniss, C. Wilkinson, A. Bryan, R.H. Moore, J.B. Partridge, Lucien Davis, Hugh Thomson, Louis Wain, and Selwyn Image, who sends a tail-piece. Anyone wishing to make a Christmas or New Year's Gift will help on the good work Mr. and Mrs. Davies are doing by sending for a book. A special large paper edition, limited to 100 copies, printed on hand-made paper, with India proofs of the drawings, and bound in parchment, will also be issued from Wilsford House, 16 Fitzroy-street, London, W., or may be obtained through Mr. Tregaskis." (The British Bookmaker. Volume V. 1891-92)."Until 1890, Louis Wain had made little or no attempt to portray cats as anything other than fluffy animals which, though they slept between sheets, or wrote letters with quill pens, were otherwise recognisably feline. The 'Louis Wain cat' had not yet been born. But in 1890, he began to explore the possibility of the comic cat; cats drawn in human situations - or humans drawn as cats, which amount to the same thing. He insisted that he did not caricature cats, but drew them as he saw them, though his approach makes it clear that he generally saw them as humans. Naturally, then, he studied humans when drawing cats. ' If I want a mild, irresponsible caricature, a grinning cat, then I have to let loose my nature impressions and let myself go on my own account, and it is astonishing what variety one can get in this way, and how one's moods vary from day to day. I have done as many as one hundred and fifty laughing cats at a time, no two being alike. ' There is another way of sketching cats, and this way I often resort to. I take a sketch-book to a restaurant or other public place, and draw the people in their different positions as cats, getting as near to their human characteristics as possible. This gives me double nature, and these studies I think my best humorous work.' The foundations of this approach were laid in 1890. That Christmas, there appeared in Holly Leaves and the Illustrated London News 'A Cats' Christmas Dance and 'A Cats' Party, respectively… By now, Louis Wain was a household name. He was sufficiently famous to be mentioned by M. H. Spielmann (1858-1948), the eminent Victorian artists' biographer, in his monograph on the Dutch cat-artist Henriette Ronner in which he wrote: "That after all this lapse of time her work should till lately be practically new to our metropolis is equally a misfortune to art-lovers and an injustice to the artist. We have, and have had, cat-painters of ability here in England: in Mr Couldery, Mr Walter Hunt and Mr Louis Wain we have men who understand and appreciate feline beauty and feline character… It is a mrak of Louis Wain's fame that in 1890 he was elected to the Presidency of the National Cat Club, following the resignation of Mr Harrison Weir." (Rodney Dale. Louis Wain. The Man who drew Cats, pp. 26 & 29).Dale, 20.
