London: George Newnes. Four bound volumes of six monthly issues in each volume. 1891 to 1894. 1st edition. hb. Royal 8vo, Uniformly bound in 3/4 leather over maroon "pebbled" buckram with gilt rules to the spines. . Conan Doyle introduced the character of Sherlock Holmes to the reading public in 1887, with the publication of the novel "A Study in Scarlet" and, later, his second novel, "The Sign of the Four". The first Sherlock Holmes short story, "A Scandal in Bohemia", was not published until July, 1891, in volume II of The Strand Magazine. It was the first of twelve stories which ran in the magazine until June, 1892, and which were later combined and published in one book entitled "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", published by Newnes in October, 1892 (see G&G A10). Our offering is four bound volumes of The Strand Magazine, containing the first appearance in print of 23 of the first 24 of the Sherlock Holmes "adventure" stories (see G&G, pp. 54-58) before the "great hiatus", i.e. the period between the "killing off" of Holmes in "The Adventure of the Final problem", and his return in 1903 with the publication of "The Adventure of the Empty House". Volume II contains adventures one through six; volume III seven through twelve; volume V fourteen through nineteen, and volume VI twenty through twenty-four. All that is lacking is the single story ("The Adventure of Silver Blaze") contained in volume IV. Each story is illustrated by Sidney Paget. In addition to the Sherlock Holmes adventures, each volume contains many other original stories by famous authors. Each volume shows rubbing to the leather. Some hinges tender, but binding tight. Spine label of volume V quite rubbed. Overall, a very nice set. .

Derrotero del Estrecho de Magallanes, Tierra del Fuego i canales de la Patagonia. Desde el Canal de Chacao hasta el Cabo de Hornos

Santiago, Chile: Imprenta Nacional, 1891. Some moderate foxing and intermittent browning, as to be expected of paper stock of this nature, yet a most attractive copy overall.. Thick quarto, with 95 plates and coastal profiles (many folding and printed in smaller format); but a very good copy overall in later quarter calf over old marbled boards. Scarce pilot guide to the Straights of Magellan and the coastline of Tierra del Fuego, publishing the results of Chilean naval surveys conducted from 1888 to 1890. The book is notable for the extensive maps and profiles - some 95 in total - and is divided into four sections respectively treating the Straits of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Patagonian channels, and a better route from Chacao Channel to Cape Horn. The author was a captain in the survey party, acting under instructions from the Ministry of Marine (which are provided in the preface to this volume). The intention of the survey was twofold, firstly to provide accurate charts and coastal profiles for shipping through these notoriously hazardous waters, and secondly, to assert Chilean ownership over remote regions contested by Argentina.

American Harvester's photograph album of an Australian sales trip, with images of Australian aborigines, kangaroo hunting, Melbourne, Ballarat, Sydney, Adelaide & Launceston.

Ca 1891 - 1893 - A remarkable album of Australian images, compiled by famed Hoosick Falls, New York manufacturer (Walter A. Wood Co.) of agricultural equipment visiting and exhibiting at Australian agricultural fairs in the 1890s. Walter Abbott Wood, the son of a blacksmith, founded his first company in 1852, making cast iron plows and repairing farm machinery. He started designing and improving mower reapers and by 1860 had produced a combined mower reaper, a machine which required just one operator. Wood was so successful that he opened overseas offices with Europe becoming his largest market. In 1865 he incorporated the Walter A. Wood Mowing and Reaping Machine Company and developed the first commercially successful binding harvester, which allowed a single machine to cut and bind grain into sheaves. By 1880 the original design, which used wire for binding, was replaced by one using twine; this design was perfected just before Cyrus McCormick's twine binding harvester. The first image in the album is an exterior view at the Melbourne Fair Grounds 1891, showing three large reaper-binders, with banners reading "Walter A. Wood Single Apron Reaper and Binder". The reaper at the right has a painted signboard which reads, "I'm 12 years old and have cut and bound over 2,000 acres of wheat". The album includes another image of harvesting company employees inside an exhibition hall, and is titled "Representatives of American Harvesting Machines, Launceston Tasmania Exposition 1892".The album also includes two images of a kangaroo hunt, and two images of aborigines. The kangaroo hunt images possibly includes employees of the Walter A. Wood Company. The first Aborigine image shows two bearded men holding long spears, both wearing loin cloths, taken in a studio with painted backdrop. The second image, titled "Group of Australian Natives" shows a large group in European dress, with a standing row including two men holding boomerangs, possibly from Lake Tyers. Some of the images in the album are unsigned; the signed photographs are by Charles Rudd (1849-1901) and Stephen Spurling II (1847–1924), with the Rudd images signed in white at the lower right "C. Rudd photog." and the others blind stamped "S. Spurling". Charles Rudd's subjects include Melbourne city and Victorian country views. Rudd had studios in Melbourne in Little Collins Street (1882-1886) and in Bourke street (1886 - 1901). Rudd traveled around Victoria with his large format view camera, glass plates, and possibly a portable laboratory.Stephen Spurling II was from a family of 3 Stephen Spurlings, all photographers. He set up a studio in Launceston and is noted for his claim to be the first in Tasmania to use dry plate work. His photographs of Tasmania in the album include: the post office, Launceston city views, Cataract Cliff grounds, Cataract Gorge and River Esk, Silver Falls at Mt. Wellington, Hobart Harbor, Governor's Residence, Hobart Harbor from Kangaroo Point, and fern trees. The Walter A. Wood Co. trip to Australia ended in April 1893, departing on the S. S. Oroya Mail Steamer out of Melbourne. An image of the steamer with caption stating that the "W W C left Melbourne Aus per S. S. Oroya April 1st, arrived at Naples, Italy May 4th 1893." The last part of the album with 6 images of Colombo, Ceylon, including street scenes and a coffee plantation.Album with a total of 78 images laid down on album stock, 38 at roughly 12 x 9" and 40 at roughly 8 x 6", with manuscript captions below. Some of the photographs numbered in red. The album boards lacking, white moire patterned end papers present; the photographs in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Picture of Dorian Gray

London: Ward, Lock & Co.,, 1891. Small quarto. Original quarter vellum, bevelled grey paper boards, titles and decorations to spine and boards gilt, olive endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a green quarter morocco solander box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine tanned with ends professionally restored, corners just a touch rubbed, a few small and very faint markings to boards, occasional tanning to deckle edges, internally clean and fresh. An excellent copy. Signed limited edition, number 189 of 250 copies printed on Van Gelder handmade paper and signed by Wilde, really very rare in this condition. Wilde's only novel and considered by many to be his greatest work, Dorian Gray combined the supernatural elements of the Gothic novel with the sins of French decadent fiction. Wilde insists in the Preface, "There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That's all" (p. vi). Critics nevertheless attacked the work for its immorality. Though Wilde claimed, "I wrote this book entirely for my own pleasure… Whether it becomes popular or not is a matter of absolute indifference to me," he also responded to critics: "Leave my book, I beg you, to the immortality that it deserves." Dorian Gray first appeared in Lippincott's magazine simultaneously in Philadelphia and London, on 20 June 1890. This publication was immediately followed by publication of an unauthorized, pirated version of the tale, printed 22 June 1890 in New York by M. J. Ivers & Co. Wilde then substantially revised the work and added six new chapters. This deluxe signed edition is of considerably greater rarity and value than the unsigned first trade edition issued three months earlier. At least one contemporary review praised this edition in particular: "the book, with its unique and piquant binding and lettering, its characteristic title page and yet more characteristic preface, is a delight to eye and hand" (Glasgow Herald). Title page, half title, and cover designed by Charles Ricketts, who designed the bindings of many Wilde volumes.

        The Saga Library

London: Bernard Quaritch,, 1891?-1905. Done into English out of the Icelandic. 6 volumes, octavo. Original dark green morocco-grained quarter calf, green cloth sides, titles and decorations to spines and front boards gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. 14 folding genealogical charts, one large folding map in end-pocket of Volume I. Bookplate of Albert E. MacColl to front pastedowns. A couple of spines very gently sunned, slight spotting to edges, prelims and endmatter. An excellent set. First editions, first impressions, of the complete set of the Saga Library. The culmination of Morris's interest in the medieval literature of Iceland, the Saga Library was translated and edited by Morris together with his friend and scholar Eiríkr Magnússon (1833?-1913) and sought to make the material more accessible to an English-speaking public. Morris's passion for the sagas was strong enough to bring the untravelled author to Iceland, to travel by pony across rough often uninhabited terrain. "Morris travelled very little outside Britain. His two voyages to Iceland, in 1871 and 1873, must rank with his undergraduate tour of the Gothic cathedrals of France as the most influential journeys of his life" (ODNB).

        Autograph Letter Signed

1891. Signed. TWAIN, Mark.Autograph Letter Signed.Arlington Hotel, Washington: January 16, 1891.Fine autograph letter signed by Twain, declining an invitation to participate in a public function. Attractively framed with a portrait of Twain.Twain's letter is addressed to Kate Foote, and reads: "Yours of day before yesterday has reached me from Hartford just as I am taking the train for home after my capitolian visit. I wish I could say yes—I would do it in a minute if the circumstances would allow it—but the recent deaths in our family circle forbid me to assist at any public function for the winter. I wish I had time to run around & have a glimpse of you, but train-time is too close at hand. Sincerely Yours, S.L. Clemens." At the time of this letter, Twain was anxiously awaiting word in Washington that a prospective investor, John Percival Jones, would exercise an option to create a parent company to produce and market Twain's infamous typesetting machine. By mid-February Jones pulled out of the deal, much to Twain's fury; it would not be until the end of 1894 that Twain would finally abandon the project, after losing a large part of his fortune in the endeavor. Fine condition.

        Autograph Letter Signed

Two pages on a halved-section of octavo-sized sheet (8" x 5") with original face of the cover envelope. December 31 [no date], but envelope post-marked 1891. To Mrs. Bryant, the wife of William J. Bryant, of which there are several letters from Christina on record to both William and his wife (esp. Bryn Mawr Special Collections, which has six), all regarding financial misfortunes. William Bryant served as literary secretary for Mackenzie Bell, biographer of Christina Rossetti. A fascinating letter, giving a clear picture of Christina's earnest in helping as well as her resolute and staunch commitment to offer sound advice without further enabling Mrs. Bryant toward failure. "Dear Mrs. Bryant, Your husband writes me a very painful letter. Pray do your very utmost to earn your won livelihood, which would seem not impossible as you have a trade. Or if work absolutely fails could you not try something different- charing or chasing for instance? or at the very worst, why not go into the House till the bitter winter is over? I feel some right to advise you because I have often helped you. Once more I enclose [underlined] 2/0 (P.S.), and I am sending you separately a balnket and one pair of flannel drawers..." She goes on to instruct Mrs. Bryant how to notify her when she has received everything. Signed with a postcript: "With every good wish, Sincererly yours, Christina G. Rossetti. My own health is causing anxiety just now. Do try to depend upon yourself whilst your Husband is amply cared for- it might seem less difficult." Three folds, very good. A scarce and fascinating look at the heart of Christina, along with her solidarity with women's rights, running against the discourse of the day.

M J Ivers & C0., New York 1891 - Paper back book bound in dark and light blue and white, Ivers' American Series # 253. Cover states published on July 24th, 1891 and as such this copy predates the first English edition by three months. This copy with 334 pp and text of last page being identical to the first edition. Green and Gibson in their bibliography note this pirated edition and date but their comment on this date it on July 25, not the 24th as on the cover. Their hypothesis is that only the covers were dated as such to escape the new copyright laws. This copy with both covers chipped and the rear being detached. Pages are tanned but supple. Covers rather frail. An interesting dilemma, is this, a pirate, the true first? Could it be unique? [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        A House of Pomegranates

London: James R. Osgood, 1891. First edition. Very Good +. A Very Good+ copy of the book with all gilt bright and complete. Some toning and foxing to the boards, a few pages show minor separation within the text block, but a handsome copy withal. Complete with the four illustrated plates. One of a thousand copies of the first edition. A collection of fairy tales from the famed writer, wit, and aesthete. "A House of Pomegranates" includes stories of illegitimate princes, mermaids, and hunchback dwarfs. This was actually Wilde's second collection of fairy tales - he had been writing such stories for years -- after "The Happy Prince and Other Tales," published in 1888. A House of Pomegranates was met with some controversy, with many reviewers finding the stories too complex for children. But Wilde clearly had more wide-ranging ambitions, and found it absurd that 'the extremely limited vocabulary at the disposal of the British child [is] the standard by which the prose of an artist is to be judged...'in building this House of Pomegranates I had about as much intention of pleasing the British child as I had of pleasing the British public' "Mr. Wilde is in sympathy with the somber magnificence of old Spain...The make-up of the book is exceptionally good." (Contemporary Review, New York Times). Very Good +.

1891 - A Novel. In Three Volumes. London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1891. Original dark green cloth decorated in black. First Edition, which consisted of only 750 copies -- more than half of which were sold to the circulating libraries, where they were read to death.~NEW GRUB STREET is Gissing's most enduring and significant novel, both as literature and as a 'way in' to major cultural problems and the social forces which shaped them. For NEW GRUB STREET Gissing again drew on his own predicament, explanation enough of its unique strength. Its power seems to have come out of the bleak despair through which Gissing passed at the time. [S&C]~Gissing spent much of 1890 trying to get started on a new novel, but finally, once begun (and once he had met Edith Underwood, the second working-class woman he married, with equally disastrous results), he wrote an average of 4,000 words a day and completed it in about nine weeks. Smith Elder told Gissing they thought the novel "clever and original" but (as always) "too gloomy"; they offered him 150 pounds to buy the copyright outright, and Gissing (unfortunately) at once accepted.~This is a very good set, complete except for the absence of the single ad leaf at the end of Vol I. The volumes are somewhat rubbed at the extremities and there is faint evidence at the bottom of each front cover that a lending library label once resided there; internally, the endpapers appear to be original but they are too clean and intact to be such (especially for volumes that were once rented out). This set has gilt lettering on the spines and black lettering on the front covers; though Collie cites black lettering in both locations, all sets we have seen have conformed to this one. Collie A9b; Spiers & Coustillas M6; Sadleir 971; Wolff 2552. Provenance: with the penciled signatures of noted bibliographer Walter E. Smith. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        INDIENS PEAUX-ROUGES [caption title]

Epinal, France: Pellerin & Cie., [1891].. Handcolored lithograph, 15 3/4 x 11 1/2 inches. Backed with another contemporary hand-colored sheet, tacked down to a later sheet of heavy paper. A few small tears at edges, repaired with tape, minor loss. Light soiling and toning. About good. Issued shortly after Wounded Knee, this French print depicts the Ghost Dance (Danse des Esprits), as well as the Sioux war dance, scalping, and representatives of the Crow, Cheyenne, Ute, Pawnee, Mandan, Comanche, and Apache tribes. The American West was very popular in Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and this print is indicative of ongoing French fascination with Native American culture.
