      FIRST EDITIONS of Francis Galton’s important 1890 and 1891 papers providing a scientific basis and model for fingerprint identification and analysis, offered here in separate leather bound volumes. Galton provides a detailed statistical model of fingerprint analysis and identification and encourages its use; the exhaustive statistical models he provides proved enough to encourage law enforcement to begin to use fingerprints and courts to then sanction that use. The first paper is an ‘Abstract’ of a paper appearing in the Transactions in the same year. The second paper is a first edition, first printing. The papers can be viewed as the basis for his Galton’s "Finger-Prints" of 1892 (Printing and the Mind of Man 376). Galton was able to establish that human fingerprints were remarkably stable from early youth to advanced age, even to after death. They changed size with growth, but (with one small exception) they did not change in their minutia. He described and classified described and classified fingerprints into eight broad categories. 1. plain arch, 2. tented arch, 3. simple loop, 4. central pocket loop, 5. double loop, 6. lateral pocket loop, 7. plain whorl, and 8. accidental. Date of publication suggested by the British Library which possesses two issues with different plates. Vivid chromolithographs, whose artful juxtapositions aid in transporting us back to the nineteenth century carnival and to see the kinetic energy and color of such occasions through a child's eyes. Here is the wonderment without the grime and sordidness that was surely the underside of peripatetic productions. The illustrations bring to life "les Animaux Savants", the wild animals, the organ grinder, the souvenir vendors, Punch and Judy, the minstrel band, the jugglers, the balancing acts, Indianqs, the monkeys, balloons, and then such innocent fun as cycling. BEAUTIFUL EARLY 20TH CENTURY OLIVE GREEN TEXTURED CALF, HANDSOMELY GILT, BY SANGORSKI & SUTFLIFFE (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), covers with double-ruled gilt border and blindstamped in a basket weave pattern, raised bands, spines lavishly gilt in compartments with central cruciform ornament framed by wide densely gilt cornerpieces filled with leaves, flowers, and small tools, each spine with two maroon morocco labels, turn-ins gilt in a lacy filigree, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges rough trimmed. Three volumes with portrait frontispiece. Light rubbing and flaking to one joint (only), spines uniformly sunned to a mellow olive brown, one leaf with a triangular tear at upper right just into the text (no loss), isolated very minor stains or foxing, otherwise A BEAUTIFUL SET IN FINE CONDITION, the handsome bindings very lustrous and with no significant wear, and the text fresh, clean, and bright. Though not to be found atop the Mt. Olympus of American literature, James Russell Lowell (1819-91) made significant contributions over a long period of time as a journalist, editor, critic, poet, philosopher, and essayist. He was the first editor of the "Atlantic Monthly" and later co-editor of the "North American Review"; he was the second president of the Modern Languages Association; and he achieved literary prominence not only in America, but abroad, where he enjoyed a triumphal European tour from 1872-74. He was at his best when dispensing folk wit and wisdom, something that obviously informs his first significant work, "The Biglow Papers," which Day describes as "a masterpiece in the genre of folksy philosophizing in American dialect." Among other important contributions is his long poem "A Fable for Critics," which includes--in not always laudatory terms--his personal characterizations of major contemporaneous American writers and his reviews of their work. Our bindings here provide a very pleasing and uncommon decorative combination: the spines offer a sumptuous display at the same time that the covers, with their interwoven texture, offer a more subtle blindstamping.

The majority of the volumes in original gilt lettered and decorated dark green cloth, 1915 in a variant silver lettered and decorated black buckram binding bearing a Brigade gift label to the front pastedown, the final eight years in dark green gilt faux leather, a good number of volumes up to 1920 with all edges gilt, some of the earlier volumes with contemporary ownership inscriptions. Profusely illustrated throughout, mostly one or two illustrations to a full page plate, a number of volumes with folding maps. All but a handful of the volumes with a list of illustrations to which the set has been collated, all plates present bar three in the 1900 volume. Some occasional wear or marking, some spines faded, the 1922 volume sometime rebacked preserving most of the original spine, chips to the foot of the spine of the 1924 volume and the head of 1925, tear with small loss to corner of the folding map of Burma in the 1894 volume. Comprising the first 76 years of the Chronicle, the set provides a comprehensive record of the Brigade through numerous campaigns including the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars and Malaya along with other tours across the world.

        Clara's Journal; a Year in a Girl's Life

      (Galena, Illinois; 1890) 185 typed pages typed on rectos only. After Clara's mother passed away in 1870, Clara was given all the letters and notes her mother had saved. Clara wrote her mother often while away. Clara typed all the letters and bound them into a book which would later be given to her daughter Louise. It contains a frontispiece drawing of the house she grew up in, following a lovely poem to Louise with hand colored flowers, a four page letter laid in from Clara to her mother. All nicely bound in 3/4 green leather over white linen decorated with purple flowers. Clara's Journal is stamped in gilt on upper board, spine fully gilt decorated, decorative endpapers, top edge gilt. In Clara's foreword she talks about Hyde park, Illinois in 1858 and about growing up during that time, signing the book, Your devoted mother, Clara Denison McClellan. Clara of Royalton, Vermont was married to Robert H. McClellan who was an Illinois State Senator, Lawyer and the President of the Bank of Galena and later the National Bank of Galena. They purchased and lived at the famous Aldrich house for 40 years and entertained many famous people including Ulysses S. Grant, Mark Twain and President Lincoln. A very nice journal.. Quarto.

      1890. [ZIMBABWE (Rhodesia)] FRY, W. Ellerton. OCCUPATION OF MASHONALAND. Views by W. Ellerton Fry. N.p., n.d., 1891. The title is taken from the front cover. The date is taken from a printed statement of copyright laid-down to front pastedown: "... Copyright and registered at Stationers' Hall, London, England ... 20th October, 1891." Folio. 18 1/2 by 12 inches (47 x 30 cm). 154 mounted album photographs on 41 heavy card stock leaves each with letterpress captions, all edges gilt. Most photographs measure 5 1/2 by 7 1/2 inches (14 x 19 cm), except for five panoramic photographs 5 1/2 by 15 inches (14 x 38 cm). Original green 3/4 morocco, rubbed at corners, titled on front cover. Foxing to the card stock leaves, seldom affecting images. Looking for 'a few paying gold reefs' and with a concession granting him rights to minerals, Cecil J. Rhodes formed the British South Africa Company which sent its heavily guarded Pioneer Column north to exploit the land between the Limpopo and Zambezi rivers in 1890. The Column, consisting of 192 prospective miners, with the famous hunter Frederick Courtney Selous as guide, and 500 troopers of the newly formed British South Africa Police Company, established a camp, Fort Salisbury, at the site of present day Harare. 'An album was produced of 154 of W. Ellerton Fry's original whole-plate photographs, which form a comprehensive record of the historic trek of the Pioneer column from Mafeking to Fort Salisbury in 1890.' William Ellerton Fry (British, 1846- 1930) was born in Somerset and emigrated to South Africa in 1872. He worked briefly as a farmer, trader, and prospector, before taking a post as secretary and computer at the Royal Observatory in Cape Town. He held the post for nearly twenty years, eventually attaining the position of Assistant Astronomer Royal. When the Mashonaland Pioneer Column was being formed, Fry was was appointed the Chief of Survey Department and Official Photographer of the Pioneer Corps with the rank of Lieutenant. In addition to preparing a detailed map from the Macloustie River to Fort Salisbury, he took the first ever photographs of the ruins of the city Zimbabwe in August 1890. Later he worked

        Valley Forge, Pa. 1890

      Myerstown, PA, 1890. No Binding. Very Good. 18 ½ x 25 inches. Green-tinted lithograph. Professionally mounted on paper; repair in lower margin not affecting printed surface, two mended splits at edges just entering surface, else a crisp, clean image; overall very good. A rare, very attractive bird's-eye view of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, with illustrations of iconic events and locales of the American Revolution. It was images of this kind that helped perpetuate certain events in the narrative of the nation's creation. The central scene at top depicts Washington with his wife visiting the winter encampment at Valley Forge. The familiar crossing of the Delaware image can be seen to the right, and on the left is the less familiar image Washington's Headquarters at Valley Forge. The two scenes at bottom show contemporaneous visitors enjoying other notable sites of the town. Because of its significance to the course of the Revolutionary War, the site of the encampment was been preserved as Valley Forge National Historical Park under the auspices of the National Park Service. The view of the town itself conveys, like so many others of its type, a tranquil, somewhat idealized landscape, in which modern transportation (the railroad) and industry (a factory in the foreground) seem to mingle seamlessly in a still largely agrarian landscape. Such views functioned in a number of ways: as lures for both tourists and potential residents; expressions of civic pride for residents; and in this case, as an effort to perpetuate an area's historic significance. Below the view is a legend listing six of the major sites, which are keyed to the view. Although the original artist is not credited on the print, the Library of Congress, which holds a copy, attributes it to T.M. Fowler, a frequent collaborator with James B. Moyer on bird's-eye views (see references below). Thaddeus M. Fowler was a leading artist and lithographer of views during the heyday of promotional bird's-eye views of American towns, which spanned from just after the Civil War to the turn of the century. His work is admired for its precise renderings and attention to cartographic and historical detail. He is likely the most prolific of all the American view makers, with over 400 to his credit during a 54-year career. Fowler's output included 220 separate views of 199 towns in Pennsylvania, as well as of locations in at least 21 states and three Canadian provinces. To put this figure in context, he was responsible for over 10% of the 1,726 panoramic maps recorded in a checklist produced by the Library of Congress in 1984. Perhaps the largest collection of Fowler views belongs to the Library of Congress, which has over 200, with another major collection in the library of the Pennsylvania State University Library, University Park. James B. Moyer was a publisher based in Myerstown and Morrisville, Pennsylvania, who published panoramic lithograph views under his own name as well as frequently collaborating with other artists and publishers. These include dozens of views produced with the prolific artist and publisher of bird's-eye views, Thaddeus M. Fowler (as Fowler & Moyer), and collaborations with O.H. Bailey of Boston (as Bailey and Moyer), and with Albert E. Downs, a lithographer. Reps 3697;

One of the inexpensive one volume editions published by Reeves and Turner, who offered a choice of cloth or leather binding. This edition contains corrections made by Morris which were incorporated into the Kelmscott Press edition. This volume is bound in three quarter vellum with black leather title, author, and date spine labels and gilt decorated compartments. Boards are marbled blue, gilt, and cream paper, as are the end pages. Bumping and some chipping to top of boards and spine, and along edge of rear board. Vellum has light smudging.         Archive of Artwork, Fanzines and Correspondence (late 1960s - early 1980s)

      A substantial archive of work by a young, gifted fantasy artist, who had just begun to appear in the professional magazines and had begun an apprenticeship with a master etcher when he died at a young age. Riley had been a contributor to a number of small fanzines, and editor for a time of two different zines. Included are copies of the zines he edited and others he collected or traded for; original artwork, pasteups and manuscripts for zines he edited; other printed materials and others' original artwork; plus a large body of correspondence related to the zines and to fantasy and science fiction in general. Included in the lot are more than 40 different fanzine titles, many of which do not appear on Locus Magazine's online checklist of "Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Weird Fiction Magazine Index: 1890-2006+." Of these 40+ titles there are over 95 different issues, plus an extensive folder pertaining to artist Kenneth Smith's publication Phantasmagoria, which includes prints, original artwork, PR materials, etc. Some notable highlights include: ¶ two sketchbooks of Riley's artwork; ¶ a complete run (Issues 1-9) of Return to Wonder, one of the zines Riley edited, plus manuscripts and artwork for Return to Wonder #6-9; ¶ correspondence from authors such as Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, L. Sprague De Camp, Philip Jose Farmer, Norman Rockwell, Ben Bova, and others; ¶ a 3-page original typescript by science fiction writer Edmond Hamilton, "Look Forward, Look Back," and a copy of the issue of Return to Wonder that was devoted to Hamilton's work, inscribed by Hamilton and by his wife, science fiction author Leigh Brackett; ¶ a typescript of an original piece by Brackett that was published in RTW about becoming a writer, which mentions her collaboration with William Faulkner on the screenplay of The Big Sleep; ¶ a large file of correspondence from artist Kenneth Smith, including artwork, photographs, an "Autobiography" typescript and interview typescript; ¶ a large file of correspondence from Jim Smith, a writer and college roommate of author Stephen King, with many letters, anecdotes, etc., about King as well as short story and poetry typescripts by Smith, 1975-1982 (i.e., preceding King's commercial breakthroughs); ¶ a large file of correspondence with SF/Fantasy publisher Donald Grant, 1971-1980, including a 33-page corrected typescript of an interview with Riley dated June 26, 1976; ¶ a file of correspondence with the literary agent and Robert E. Howard scholar Glenn Lord re Robert E. Howard, to whom one issue of Return to Wonder was devoted; ¶ an extensive file (approximately 120 items) of correspondence from Michael Taylor, co-author and co-editor of Return to Wonder for part of its duration, including a typescript of a co-authored story and a second, extensively corrected typescript. ¶ This is a significant archive that adds to the body of knowledge of 1970s science fiction fanzines; restores and enhances the limited record of one of the fine artists of the genre; and puts the fanzines of that period into historical context.         Animal ABC and Picture Blocks

      Germany:. Ca. 1890.. Very good condition. Charming children's picture blocks in the original box. The chromolithographic illustrations mounted on wooden blocks, depicting various animals, including a kangaroo. Each animal block has descriptive text on the verso. The text for the kangaroo reads, "The Kangaroo comes from Australia. By the help of its tail and enormous hind legs it is able to escape by terrific bounds when pursued". With six columns and four rows, for a total of 24 animal blocks. The illustration of the dog is the German spitz; other animals include the antelope, camel, bison, duck, elephant, flamingo, goat, hippo, ibis, jaguar, lion, monkey, newt, ostrich, porcupine, quail, rhino, tiger, underwing moth, vulture, wolf and zebra. In the original box, with chromolithographic illustration of lions in front of a cave, and 'Germany' stamped at the lower right corner. Edges of box slightly rubbed, a few splits.

      Boston: J. H. Buffords Sons, n.d. (ca 1890). First edition thus. Huge folio (17.5 x 13.5 inches). Original blue bevelled cloth with gilt embossed cover design. Twenty remarkable full-page drawings by J. Noel Paton, a sculptor, illustrator and painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Percy Bate, in his English" Pre-Raphaelite Painters includes Noel Paton (together with Arthur Hughes and other artists) among those painters on whom Pre-Raphaelitism had a permanent influence. A very scarce and prodigious work, this book is seldom seen, and when it does show up, it is usually disbound owing the size and weight. This copy is very good or better, with wear to foot of spine, edgewear, corners peeled, soiling and scuffing to covers, hinges cracked, but clean and bright internally and certainly a desirable and well-kept entity.

A fascinating group of letters whose scope ranges from animism and tree worship to private topics. In one letter, Frazer thanks Allen "for the kind present of 'The Attis'" (Allen's translation of The Attis of Caius Valerius Catullus - with dissertations on the myth of Attis, on the origin of tree-worship -, 1892). Frazer later devoted a section to this subject in Adonis, Attis, Osiris. Studies in the History of Oriental Religion (1906). Elsewhere, Frazer observes, "I should be pleased and proud to make your acquaintance - Whether the profit would be mutual, is, I fear, much more than doubtful. I am no talker and I am afraid you would find me an exceedingly dull fellow. The few ideas I have occur at long intervals, and though, by being stored up and set out together in a book, they make a little show, yet the intervals (which form much the greater part of my life) are times of 'long barren silence' and intellectual vacuity. Not that I am idle at such times, I am reading and studying. But the process of absorbing ideas, however pleasurable to the absorber, is hardly interesting to the bystander. Forgive me for saying so much about myself - It must be very disappointing, after reading a book with interest or even admiration, to find that the writer is a very dull person." The recipient is Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (1848-1899), a prolific Canadian-born writer, reviled in the mid 1890s as "the prophet of the new hedonism." As Vickery notes, discussing The Attis, "the first to make extensive use of Frazer's ideas was Grant Allen - he drew heavily on The Golden Bough, which he calls 'a profound and epoch-making work' - Allen's ideas are of less importance than is the swiftness with which he absorbed and applied the perspectives afforded classical literature by The Golden Bough." Frazer autograph material is quite uncommon, especially with such good content

Fores to record important racehorses of the day for subsequent publication. This connection continued through until his death in 1928.         THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY

      New York: M. J. Ivers & Co, 1890. First edition in book form. Good. Original light blue wrappers, printed in dark blue; in the truncated 13 chapter format; publisher&#39;s catalog at the back. A Good, unrestored copy, lacking the front free end paper, with chips and wear at the extremities and chipping along the top edge of the page block, affecting three quarters of the pages to varying degrees, text not affected. & & An extremely fragile book and incredibly rare to market. Not noted in Mason&#39;s bibliography. No. 195 in M. J. Ivers & Company&#39;;s American Series. The book appeared in Lippincott&#39;;s Monthly Magazine for July, 1890 (printed June 20), and was not reprinted in England until 1891. The present work is possibly a piracy of the Lippincott story, but the date of entry for second class mailing privileges is June 22, 1890, which suggests that the book and the magazine appeared almost simultaneously. & & The author&#39;s only published novel and a gothic masterpiece. A complex psychological study of a man who fully embraces an hedonistic world-view, seduced by the idea of ageless beauty. Drawing on a rich literary tradition, including: "Faust," "Jekyll and Hyde," and Shakespeare, among others, Wilde&#39;s sensational novel met with moral censure from all sides. However, it quickly became closely associated with the aesthetic movement, which espoused that art and literature need only be beautiful, not send a moral or sentimental message. Modern critics and readers agree that "Dorian Gray" now stands within the very top tier of literary efforts. The book also had a profound impact on Wilde&#39;s own life, since a copy was lent by Lionel Johnson to his cousin Lord Alfred Douglas, who begged to be taken to meet the author. Thus Wilde saw his own fictional character come to life. Housed in a custom slipcase with chemise. Good.

      London: Chapman and Hall, Limited,, c.1890. 21 volumes bound in 16, octavo (174 × 118 mm). Contemporary red half morocco, titles and elaborate decoration to spines, raised bands, marbled boards, endpapers and edges. Illustrated throughout by amongst others Robert Seymour, George Cruikshank, Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz), George Cattermole, John Leech. The occasional minor blemish, spines and board edges ever so slightly rubbed, an excellent set. The Charles Dickens edition. A handsomely bound set of Dickens&#39;s works.

        THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY Together with Works by Bret Harte and Lafcadio Hearn

      Lippincott Monthly Magazine. Very Good with no dust jacket; Here printed for the first time in the July 1890 edition of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. 100 pages, in 13 chapters. Wilde later added 6 more chapters to give us the edition generally reprinted today. But that is not the only wonderful item between these marbled covers. This is a bound edition of Lippincott's for May to August, 1890, with several other high spots. These include the complete Sappho of Green Springs by Bret Harte, from the May 1890 issue and a piece from that same issue titled Karma, by Lafcadio Hearn. Another illustrated piece on Palmistry, also called Cheiromancy. Each piece is separately paginated, as they were issued separately. The Picture of Dorian Gray was originally issued as a paperback by Lippincott's Monthly, and copies of the standalone volume are generally in very poor condition and still sell for $2000 or so. This copy is 9x6, bound in purplish half leather with gilt titles and marbled boards. Some age lines on the spine, but the leather is holding up very well. A couple of wonderful old rubber stamps from William V. Pippen, Dealer in Books, New & Old, 327 Charles St. , Baltimore, MD. In very good condition, almost impossible to find. 1890. First US Edition; First Printing. Magazine. 8vo; The Philadelphia edition (simultaneous with the London edition) bound together with stories by Bret Hart (Sappho of Green Springs) and lafcadio Hearne (Karma) and Mrs. Alexander (What Gold Cannot Buy) .

      Lippincotts Monthly Magazine. Philadelphia. 1890. FIRST EDITION. First publication of Doyle&#39;s second Sherlock Holmes story. 8vo. (8.9 x 6.inches). Engraved frontis, 147-290pp. The sign of four is published between pages 147 and 223. The rest of the pages contain stories, poems and essays by various writers. A very good example which has been finely bound, without any advert leaves, in half red morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe of London. Spine with raised bands, the compartments lettered in gilt. Red cloth on boards. All edges gilt. The binding dates from the mid to late twentieth century. A fine copy.

      Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott. Jan-Jun 1890, 1890. First US Appearance. Large 8vo. 915pp. Bound in contemporary half brown morocco over maroon cloth boards. Light rubbing and scuffing to extremities, strong and tight, very good indeed. Light spotting to page edges, internally clean. The first American appearance of this story, with its own dedicated frontispiece and title page. An impressive survival.

        Autograph Letter Signed ("R. F.B") from Richard Burton to Leonard Smithers concerning their collaboration on Catullus

      Maloja, Upper Engadine, [Switzerland], august 18, [1890]. 8vo. 3-1/2 pp on a single folded leaf. Two small tears at old folds, else near fine and bright, with original mailing envelope. Laid in an half blue morocco and cloth slipcase. Nelson, Publishers to the Decadents, pp. 17- 23, et passim; Penzer pp. 156-167 . An interesting literary letter that documents the association between Burton and Smithers, who collaborated on an edition of the Priapeia published in 1890. Burton is known to have been working obsessively on his translation of Catullus at this time, and this letter to his friend and collaborator Smithers covers progress to date, as well as news of travels in and around Swiss spas, and of acquaintances they have made. Written on stationery of a Zurich hotel with the address struck through and Maloja, Upper Engadine, substituted in Burton&#39;s hand. "Of course, at the time when the work on Priapeia was completed, only months before his death, Burton, having no knowledge of its future fortunes, counted his first collaborative effort with Smithers a success. Consequently he had gone to work together with Smithers on another volume of Latin erotica, Catullus&#39;s Carmina ... So caught up was Burton in this publishing agenda that he seriously considered during the last months of his life giving up his diplomatic duties and devoting himself entirely to the project that he and Smithers envisioned" (Nelson, p. 18). Burton died in October 1890, and the joint translation was not issued until 1894. It remains one of the major works of late Victorian erotica issued through the Erotika Biblion Society.         Rivers of Grass. An Homage to Marjory Stoneman Douglas

      Boca Raton, FL: Minerva: The Press at Wimberly. 2012. One of 36 copies, on Yu Kou heavy for the images and text and interleaved with Yu Kou light paper, hand numbered and signed by the artist on the colophon page, "DKrause." Page size: 9-7/8 x 6-7/8 inches; 10pp. Bound: loose as issued housed in envelope made of terracotta Lokta oil paper fastened with tie (combination of terracotta and light orange string and tan leather cord) on lozenge-shaped seed-pod from mahogany tree serves as the fastener, printed letterpress (with a small amount of ink) with the words RIVER OF GRASS and Dorothy Simpson Krause on the lower left front corner. The artist tells us that the envelope, 7 x 10 inches, was selected as the sort of thing an early settler might use to carry a parcel of documents. & The seven images (six images plus titlepage) in the book were produced from historic images selected by the artist (credits listed on last page) as well as the artist&#39;s own photographs. The photographs of the Everglades were combined with the historic images on the computer and, in each, separated a layer that became the letterpress printing plate. The resulting images have achieved a depth and luminosity not otherwise possible. Ghost-like images reflecting the history of the Everglades combine with the disastrous effects of industrial mismanagement. However, the beauty and vastness of this natural wonder shine through in each image. A laser printer was used to print the under-layer for letterpress. The unprinted margins of the paper were torn away to create a deckle edge. Each sheet was then folded into a folio and then opened flat and a sheet of Yu Kou sheer was used between each folio. The interleaving of lighter- weight sheets somehow, when turning the pages, suggests the movement of the grasses in the Everglades. Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890-1998) was an American journalist, writer, feminist and environmentalist. The worked for "The Miami Herald" and wrote over 100 short stories. It is, however, for her 1947 book, THE EVERLADES: RIVER OF GRASS, that she is most remembered. Compared to Rachel Carson&#39;s SILENT SPRING for its impact on the environment, it redefined the national image of the Everglades, pointing out that the entire ecosystem of south Florida was dependent on this natural wonder. & Dorothy Simpson Krause&#39;s homage to Marjory Douglas, and, therefore, to the Everglades, is a beautiful book with a strong and vital message. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/10574.jpg >Image.</A><br>

        [BROADSHEET PROGRAM AND TWO CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPHS OF MISS OLOF KRARER, "THE LITTLE ESQUIMAUX LADY"]

      Illinois. 1890/1893.. 4pp. on a folded folio sheet, with two cabinet card photographs, 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches. Old folds, some chipping and wear to program. About very good. Cabinet cards near fine. Promotional items for Miss Olof Krarer, "The Little Esquimaux Lady," an Icelandic dwarf who toured and lectured about her supposed life as a Greenland Eskimo. The program, which indicates that Krarer will speak at the Presbyterian Church in Richland, Michigan on Friday evening, April 18, 1890, gives testimonials about her talk, as well as biographical information about the lecturer: "Miss Krarer was born and lived in her native country, Greenland, until 15 years of age, when she left home with a party of shipwrecked sailors, and after traveling one thousand miles over frozen seas at last reached Iceland. She remained in Iceland about ten years, when she left there with her father and finally reached Manitoba. Many friends becoming greatly interested in her welfare induced her to study the English language, which she has done to great advantage during the past six years, and now speaks it fluently. The story of her life, as she tells it, is more thrilling than any fairy tale." Indeed, as she told it, her life was a fairy tale. Krarer (1858-1935), an Icelandic native, emigrated to the United States at the age of nineteen. Unable to find any work beyond the circus sideshow, she reinvented herself as a Greenland Eskimo and took to the lecture circuit, where she told outlandish (and incorrect) tales of life as a Greenland native. Her talk was extremely popular, and she toured for many years, delighting audiences across the country. The two cabinet cards, printed in Ottawa, Illinois, show her in "native dress" (i.e. a white furry suit) and in the latest Victorian fashion. Both the cards and program note that she is "40 inches in height, and weighs 120 pounds."
