Lutetia. Paris.

1890 - Paris: c.1890. Coloured lithographic map on nine sheets conjoined, total 1350 x 1390mm. Laid on canvas. A full-size facsimile of the first geometric plan (as opposed to a bird's-eye view) of Paris, showing the city as it was in 1647. Orientated with north to the right, it shows the layout of the streets in detail, although the major buildings are still shown n profile. In the top corners are a prospect of the city from Montmatre and a view of the Louvre. In the bottom corners of the plan are two neoclassical pedestals containing elevations of the Royal palaces and other country houses, surmounted by trophies and armorials. At the bottom, outside the oak-leaf border is another strip of elevations. Jacques Gomboust, Louis XIV's 'Ingénieur du Roi', compiled this plan from a number of smaller surveys he undertook, publishing it in 1652 with a dedication to Louis XIV and a text describing the problems he had constructing the map. He wrote that 'without extraordinary help, how do you think that an individual could leave this labyrinth? Consider the quantity of streets, the number of churches, convents, hospitals, schools, hotels, bridges, embankments and other public places that are on this map. And imagine how many observations would be necessary to create the map and projection of each one in its correct measurements of length, width and height since the plan and contour of a citadel causes much trouble. We have even judged it necessary not to represent the bourgeois homes whose size and dimensions we could not have given correctly without an infinite amount of time'. The original engraved version of this plan very rarely comes on the market. PETERS: Mapping Discord, p. 75-7.

The new census of the United States—the electrical enumerating mechanism

      1890.
[Hollerith Machine.] The new census of the United States—the electrical enumerating mechanism. Wood-engraved illustration. In Scientific American 63, no. 9 (August 30, 1890): 122 [front wrapper]. Whole number. [122]-142pp. 395 x 277 mm. Original self-wrappers. Stab-holes in gutter margin (not affecting image), small marginal tear in one leaf mended with tape, but very good.

First Edition of this large and remarkable early illustration of the Hollerith punched-card tabulator, which adorns the front wrapper of the August 30, 1890 issue of the Scientific American (the accompanying article, titled “The census of the United States,” is on p. 132). The image shows male and female workers using card-punch machines, tabulators and counting machines, while a group of clerks manually sorts and ties the printed data sheets.

The punched-card tabulator and its accessories, which reigned as the primary large-scale data-processing system until the advent of the electronic digital computer, was invented in the 1880s by Herman Hollerith, a onetime clerk at the United States Census Bureau. Acting on a suggestion by John Shaw Billings, the Bureau’s head of vital statistics, Hollerith perfected a system that used punched cards for recording statistical data; the cards were read by electrical sensors and the results tabulated by machine. In 1890 the Census Bureau contracted with Hollerith to use his tabulator in the 1890 census, an event that has been described as “a milestone in the history of modern data processing” (Cortada, Before the Computer: IBM, NCR, Burroughs, and Remington Rand and the Industry they Created, 1865–1956, p. 48). Hollerith’s machines, which could tabulate data for as many as fifteen thousand people a day, cut the time needed to complete the census by nearly eighty percent over manual methods; they also enabled the Census Bureau to process a larger variety of data than ever before. The age of mechanized data handling had begun.

In December 1896 Hollerith incorporated his business under the name of the Tabulating Machine Company, manufacturing and leasing his tabulators to government agencies and, increasingly, to commercial users such as banks, insurance companies and department stores. Hollerith sold his company in 1911 to industrialist Charles R. Flint, who merged it with several other manufacturing companies to form C-T-R (the initials stood for Computing, Tabulating and Recording). In 1915 Thomas J. Watson became president of C-T-R; nine years later Watson changed the name of the company to International Business Machines (IBM).

The Sign Of Four. Serial Issue

London: Ward, Lock and Co. [Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott.] 1890, 1890. First Appearance. Volume XLV of Lippincott's Magazine spanning January to June 1890. Publisher's yellow cloth overprinted in black, with a red pebble grain coth spine, titled in gilt and black to spine. The yellow is soiled, but solid and bright, and the cloth spine is bumped and scuffed (with a small repair to the head) but is still tight and sound. Internally clean and fresh. A very good copy. One of the more mental (by which I mean typically, madly Victorian) Sherlock Holmes novels with stolen jewels looted during the Indian Mutiny, betrayal (so much nodding to Wilkie Coins it's a wonder someone's head doesn't fall off), a sinister blowpipe wielding Andaman Islander, Dr. Watson's love interest, a fair amount of cocaine and in fact many of the Sherlockian conventions that we hold so dear appeared first in this novel. The second of four full-length Sherlock Holmes novels, originally appearing in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine (Feb.1890). Doyle was reputedly commissioned to write the story following a dinner with the editor at London's Langham Hotel. The function was also attended by Oscar Wilde, who would contribute his only novel 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' to the July 1890 issue. Doyle later discussed this 'golden evening' in his autobiography 'Memories and Adventures' (1924). Green & Gibson; A Bibliography of A.Conan Doyle. Black Forest Photo Album with An Unusual Relief Depicting Putti, One Blowing Bubbles, the Other, Playing Cymbals

Berner Oberland, Switzerland - N.d., circa 1890. The front board is quite elaborate, with a beveled perimeter of a richly painted wood grain. Within is an oblong piece of walnut in the quintessential Black Forest, or in actuality, Swiss Brienzerware, style. By this is meant the delicate foliate relief vignettes which rest on lightly pitted wood. But this frames a light walnut oblong oval with the putti relief that bespeaks more eighteenth century rococo than standard Brienzerware, except that the stones and vegetation at the base are consistent with Brienzerware. The rear board of the album has a pyrographic bouquet such as was practiced by the Swiss carvers later in the nineteenth century. The album, now empty of photos, has 25 thick card leaves, and it is kept closed with a brass clasp. The spine is of brown morocco.

This groundbreaking work of early photojournalism documented the squalid living conditions and dangerous and exploitative working conditions of New York City slums in the 1880s. Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("B. v. Suttner").

Harmannsdorf bei Eggenburg, 7. XI. 1890.. 2½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo..
