The Great East River Suspension Bridge

New York: Currier & Ives, 1890. A MARVELOUS BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF NEW YORK FEATURING THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE Frame size: 381/2" x 34" | Window size: 211/2" x 26" No city surpassed New York as a symbol of growth and optimism. The city's rapid rise towards becoming an international power was, to many, capped by the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, which linked Manhattan with the borough of Brooklyn, from which many made the long ferry commute every working day. The bridge meant that life could move faster, increasing productivity and success. In many ways, the utilitarian function of the bridge signaled what would make New York the preeminent world power: efficiency, ingenuity and progressive thinking. . Book.

(vlg. dazu Brockhaus, 19. Aufl. XIII, 509).

        The Sign of Four.

London: Spencer Blackett. 1890 - Octavo. Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in red morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single gilt fillet rule to boards, twin rule to dentelles, dark green endpapers, gilt edges. Very occasional spot to text leaves, an excellent copy in fine binding. With frontispiece by Charles Kerr. First edition. This copy has both internal issue points, "138" on the contents page is incomplete and appears as "13" and "wishes" is misspelt on p.56 as "w shed". However, these issue points are present in both the first and second issue of the first edition, the only way of determining between the two issues is by the binding. The second issue was reissued by Griffith Farran and Company, with the original title page. The covers are also the same except for the imprint at the foot of the spine which reads "Griffith Farran and Cos/ Standard/ Library". As this copy has been rebound it is not possible to distinguish whether it is a first or second issue of the first edition. This copy is bound without the publishers' catalogue found in some first edition copies. [Attributes: First Edition]

Illustrated boards with cloth spine, edge & corner wear, cover soil, lacks FFEP, first two pages with creasing, pg. 48 with marginal chip that effects one word, soil at page edges. Originally suggested to his publisher in 1881, the work was not printed until 1889.         Southern California and the Santa Fe Route.

May 1890 - Oblong 8vo., (3 4/8 x 5 4/8 inches). 17 fine pen and ink sketches, and one watercolour drawing of striking views in and around California and the Santa Fe trail through Arizona and New Mexico, each captioned and dated by the artist. Original maroon paper boards heavily embossed in gilt, inscribed by Brownell on the front free endpaper (a bit worn at the extremities). Brownell a landscape and still-life artist born in Providence, Rhode Island "sketched and painted some of the most distinctive scenery of any American artist, he had a natural scientist's curiosity for the minute details of nature, and made voluminous sketches in both pencil and watercolor of specific nature studies as well as more complete landscape compositions. He kept meticulously detailed notes of his surroundings, both as inscriptions on individual sketches as well as in a series of picture diaries [as here]. Brownell's pictures broadly follow the style of the Hudson River School; he painted many oils and watercolours of the same New England views popular with other landscape artists of the time, as well as subjects drawn from the vicinities of his family's properties in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Brownell's most significant contribution to American landscape painting, however is his body of landscapes of the island of Cuba, which he first visited in 1853. Free from financial worries, Brownell traveled extensively throughout his life, and seems never to have stopped sketching. In all his works, there is a strong sense of place, of a particular location sensitively recorded at a specific moment in time. Brownell's sketches are souvenirs of the many places he visited. They were intended as such; each is annotated careful in clear script, with date and location generally recorded along with vantage point, common and botanical names of plants, and other relevant information. Brownell kept these sketches to remind himself of precisely what he saw at various times and places as, in effect, a visual diary that could rekindle his memory. Bound by the artist into books, these sketches were kept in his possession until his death" (Zachary D. Ross "Charles de Wolf Brownell: A Decade of Travel, 1856-66" pages 5-6). The sketches in this album are: San Diego, Cal. From Florence Heights May 4.1890; Meru - Old Spanish Mission - near San Juan, Cal. May 9.1890; Santa Ana May 9. 1890; View North, from near San Borodino May 9. 1890; Mojave Desert May 9. 1890; Mojave May 9.1890; Mojave Indians at the Needles - on the Colorado River May 10.1890; At the Needles - course of the Colorado River May 10.1890; Dum Palms - Arizona.         Two Years Ago &

London - Macmillan and Co., 1890 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A late nineteenth century edition of two of Charles Kingsley's novels, attractively bound together in leather with gilt lettering, decoration, and spine label. Yeast: Fourth Edition. Bears the insignia of the School of St John the Divine on the front board. Charles Kingsley (18191875) was a novelist, Church of England clergyman, and controversialist. In 1848, despite his interest in the problems of urban workers, Kingsley turned to the plight of agricultural labourers when his novel Yeast appeared serially in Fraser's Magazine. The Crimean War and the outbreak of cholera in 18534 were invoked in his novel Two Years Ago (1857), his most successful and coherent novel of contemporary life. Kingsley's continuing concern with sanitary reform, which had led him to join a deputation to the prime minister on the subject in 1854, was dramatised in the efforts of his doctor hero to combat cholera and unhealthy housing conditions. However, in the novel hedid express satisfaction with improvements in the conditions of agricultural life since Yeast. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. The rearhinge is just starting, but still firm. The front board and pastedown is attached by the cords only, and may become detached in the post. There is some mild wear to the extremities, with some mild bumping with loss to theleather at the top of the spine, andsome mildrubbing to the edges. Internally the pages are clean with mild browning. Overall the condition is good only due to the damaged hinges, with a very good interior..

Autograph Letter Signed, in Italian, with translation/transcription, 4 pages on one 8vo sheet of Regina-Palast-Hotel, Maximiliansplatz, Munchen illustrated stationery, August 20, 1921. Signed, "Your Muckilini."

Signed, "Your Muckilini," Puccini composes a love letter to Rose Ader (1890-1955), Austrian light soprano and mistress of Puccini. Although a letter to his love, the great passion of his final days, it is not as much a love letter as a description of a devious ploy to arrange for them to be with one another in his home at Viarregio. He explains to her that she needs to write him a letter, preferably in "bad Italian," to say she is coming to Viarrego, but to say it in a way that should his wife open the letter, she would have no idea of their secret love. He tells her to say, "I do not know, dear Maestro, if you remember me... I am your Suor Angelica of Hamburg. I hope to have your protection in singing and studying in Italy. I have a great desire to learn your beautiful language...." He suggests that by writing this way, "there may be less reason for mystery and perhaps fewer sorrows for them." Puccini met Rose Ader in February of 1921 when she premiered in the role of Angelina in the Hamburg production of Puccini's Suor Angelina, the second opera of the trio of operas Puccini wrote called "Il Trittico." At the time she was only 31 years old. Their love affair, though possibly largely or even wholly platonic, began in the spring of 1921 after exchanging photographs. Their affair lasted most likely until the end of Puccini's life. At the time of this letter, Puccini was working on his opera "Turandot" which did not premier until after his death. While only one love letter from Puccini to Rose Ader is known to have been published (see Julian Budden's "Puccini: His Life and Works" which states that only a May 1921 letter had been published to date), several others, mostly from 1921, are known to exist. A few of them are signed, "Your Muckilini" or "Your Giacomuckilissimo," clearly endearing terms. Puccini also mentions seeing the opera, "Joseph," which he thought was "a fine spectacle, but poor music." He comments, "Strauss not very beautiful." "Joseph" (also known as "Joseph of Egypt") is an opera by the French composer Etienne Mehul, first performed in 1807. A new version of it by Richard Strauss was given at The Dresden State Opera in November of 1920. This is, no doubt, the performance that Puccini saw. In Josmar Lopes' March 18, 2014 review of the "Team of Operative Rivals... at the Met," [see josmarlopes.wordpress.com] he writes, "Yes, they were rivals. Giacomo Puccini and Richard Strauss... Or so the accepted wisdom goes. But even as such, they were not openly antagonistic toward one another... Though separated by language, culture and country, the two composers were more alike than either cared to admit... They enjoyed playing cards together, at least according to William Berger, author of Puccini Without Excuses, but 'pointedly avoided discussing music theory,' a wise course indeed." He also reports having had a row with Schnabl, but who is now behaving properly. Count Riccardo Schnabl Rossi (1872? - 1955) was a long time friend of Puccini who he had known since 1899. He promoted Puccini's operas throughout Germany, Austrian and Italy. He coached Rose Ader in the title role of Suor Angelina for her Hamburg performance in 1921. Schnabl was also known to have been Puccini's confidant in covering for Puccini with many of his mistresses [see Michele Girardi's "Puccini: His International Art," page 436]. A fine letter revealing intimacies and intricacies of the great composer's life.
