        The Sign of Four

London: Spencer Blackett., 1890. Octavo. Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in red morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single gilt fillet rule to boards, twin rule to dentelles, dark green endpapers, gilt edges. With frontispiece by Charles Kerr. Very occasional spot to text leaves, an excellent copy in fine binding. First edition. This copy has both internal issue points, "138" on the contents page is incomplete and appears as "13" and "wishes" is misspelt on p.56 as "w shed". However, these issue points are present in both the first and second issue of the first edition, the only way of determining between the two issues is by the binding. The second issue was reissued by Griffith Farran and Company, with the original title page. The covers are also the same except for the imprint at the foot of the spine which reads "Griffith Farran and Cos/ Standard/ Library". As this copy has been rebound it is not possible to distinguish whether it is a first or second issue of the first edition. This copy is bound without the publishers' catalogue found in some first edition copies.

        The Tragic Muse

London: Macmillan and Co. 1890 - First English edition. One of 500 copies. Three volumes, original publisher's blue cloth. Louis Auchincloss's copy bearing his bookplate to each volume. An additional former owner bookplate to the front pastedowns of each volume, some wear with fraying to spine ends and corners, short tears along spine, hinges cracked and secure. A good, completely unrestored set, housed in a custom cloth box with folding chemise. Edel & Laurence A34b. Auchincloss's writing embodied the old New York traditions of Henry James and Edith Wharton. Auchincloss wrote in his 1977 novel, The Dark Lady: ".Do you know Henry James's The Tragic Muse? It's the best novel written about an actress. A rising young diplomat asks the heroine to give up her career to become his wife and a future ambassadress.Ah how James saw it, the idiocy of any man's thinking that a real actress could even consider balancing love against the stage!" Originally published serially in seventeen installments in the Atlantic Monthly from January 1889-May 1890, The Tragic Muse was Henry James' longest novel to date. The plot tells of two aspiring artists, painter Nick Dormer and actress Miriam Rooth, who endeavor to find both artistic and commercial success. The large cast of characters that encounter Nick and Miriam throughout the text comprise a panoramic view of nineteenth century English society. James originally offered The Tragic Muse to Macmillan, but was dissatisfied with their offers. Accordingly, the first edition of this text was published on June 7, 1890, by Houghton, Mifflin, and Co., and was followed by this first English edition on June 28th of the same year. Notorious for heavily editing his serialized stories before book publication, James naturally made many revisions to The Tragic Muse, and his dual publication lead to slightly different revisions in the American and English editions. Notably, the use of punctuation, specifically commas, varies significantly in the Atlantic Monthly, Houghton, and Macmillan editions, with the heaviest use in the Atlantic Monthly and lightest in Macmillan. As James was known for using commas sparingly, this first English edition most closely mirrors the author's natural writing style. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Photograph Album of a Trip to England

Oblong folio. Leather over flexible boards with blank black paper leaves. An album with 419 mounted photographs, 57 unmounted photographs, and one drawing. Many different sizes and processes, mostly gelatin-silver prints with a few cyanotypes. Photographs are mostly near fine, a few have creases or small damage, some are a bit oxidized, overall very good; the boards are near fine. The unmounted photographs are mostly captioned on the verso, perhaps the mounted ones are as well. Undated but circa 1890-1895. Perhaps slightly more than a dozen of the images are cabinet card portraits or commercial images, the rest are originals. Several of the unmounted images have the stamped back mark of Rev. Leonidas E. Coyle of Bridgeton, New Jersey, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church (also laid in is an interesting stamped label from a grocery and dry-goods store, presumably where the album was purchased). Most of the images are from a journey to England. The album begins with shipboard photos, but the major subject in England is churches and church ruins (Lincoln, Chester, Tintern Abbey, and many others), occasionally leavened by a small child or stodgy-looking clerical gentleman. The quality of the photographs are generally quite accomplished. Perhaps the last quarter of the album consists of portraits of young children with hoops, tennis gear, reading, canoeing, throwing a ball, with false mustaches, dressed as a soldier, with dogs and cats. Many seem quite pensive. Perhaps because of the fidgety nature of children, the childhood photographs seem of a lower artistic quality, but many are still quite charming. .

We have blurred the image for public viewing as it is a nude. Pluschow's photos can be found in the collections of many museums and libraries around the world. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

1890. DITTRICH, Max. DER DEUTSCH-FRANZOSISCHE KRIEG 1870 UND 1871. Gedenk- Blatter in Wort und Bild an die Ehrentage der deutschen Nation. Dresden & New York: Druck & Verlag von H. G. Munchmeyer, [1890]. Profusely illustrated with color lithographs and wood-engraved text illustrations. 86pp., plus illus. 17 3/4 by 22 3/8 inches (45.5 x 55.2 cm.). Oblong folio, brown cloth, interlaced border stamped in black to boards, title and decoration stamped in gilt to upper board. This is a near contemporary account of the Franco-Prussian war, which resulted in the establishment of the Third Republic of France and the German Empire, produced in Germany. It is illustrated with 25 full-page lithographs depicting military actions; 24 of which are in brilliant color. The text pages have printed borders and numerous wood-engraved illustrations showing supplementary action and portraits of prominent people and leaders on both the French and German sides. The paper has toned at the edges and is brittle, showing several short tears and some chipping; the title page is torn in half, but both pieces are present. The volume is dampstained along the fore-edge, affecting the text and some of the plates. Two of the plates have closed tears which enter the image. The volume lacks the spine, although both boards are attached to the text block by the sewing cords; the cloth is moderately stained, and the gilt has dulled. This is an interesting historical item with impressive chromoliths; it is offered as is.

The Gentle Art of Making Enemies

London: William Heinemann. 1890. First. First English edition, and the first authorized edition, containing a letter from William Heinemann stating the facts of the case, one of only ten special copies. Near fine in slightly chipped, publisher's brown, gilt-decorated wrappers, bound into similarly decorated, near fine brown morocco by Zaehnsdorf in 1925. Housed in a custom quarter-morocco slipcase with cloth chemise (the latter not shown in illustration). Inscribed by Whistler to his publisher: "William Heinemann - Publisher, Philosopher & Friend!-- [author's butterfly signature] Chelsea. Oct. 1890." Whistler's details of his libel suit against the critic John Ruskin, who in an 1877 published review of Whistler's painting "Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket" had written: "I have seen, and heard, much of Cockney impudence before now; but never expected to hear a coxcomb ask two hundred guineas for flinging a pot of paint in the public's face." (What would Ruskin have made of Jackson Pollock?) The lawsuit nearly ruined both parties -- ultimately the artist was awarded a single farthing in damages and the court costs were split. Whistler had counted on many artists to stand witness at the trial but most declined, fearing the impact on their reputations. For the last several years of his life Heinemann's residence served as Whistler's home when he was in London. An extraordinary association. .

The Complete Works of Bret Harte

13 - London - Chatto & Windus 1890 - A nice cleanuniform leather bound set of Harte's worksBound in half green leather with marbled paper covered boards and gilt foredges. Francis Bret Harte (1836 1902) was an American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in California. Irony with a realistic texture, yet softened by sentimentality, was the hallmark of Harte's style. Typical of his best fiction was his nativity parable The Luck of Roaring Camp (August 1868), published in the second issue of the Overland Monthly. In a mining camp a prostitute, Cherokee Sal, dies in childbirth, leaving an infant christened by the miners Thomas Luck. For the boy, who is being bottle-fed with ass's milk, they import a rosewood cradle. A metamorphosis begins. They wash, plant flowers, eschew profanity. The Ingin baby survives into spring, when melting snow and rain inundate the foothills. A flash flood sweeps away the cabin in which Kentuck, a miner, is sleeping with The Luck in his arms. Vanished also may be the brief moment of civilisation. (Stanley Weinstraub, ODNB)The volumes are entitled:Vol. 1: Poems and drama -- Vol. 2: Earlier Papers, etc. -- Vol. 3: Tales of the Argonauts etc-- Vol. 4: Gabriel Conroy -- Vol. 5: Stories and condensed novels -- Vol. 6: Tales of the Pacific slope I -- Vol. 7: Tales of the Pacific slope II -- Vol. 8: Tales of the pine and the cypress -- Vol. 9: Buckeye and chapparel -- Vol. 10: Tales of trail and town. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm. There is some wear to the extremities including fading to the spine, slight bumping, some very small areas of loss and some markings. Internally the pages are generally bright and clean with some volumes having the occasional handling mark or mild spot throughout, and some mild spotting to the first and last couple of pages of most of thevolumes. The frontispiece of volume one has offset slightly onto the title page. Overall the condition of these books is very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1890 - 85 Dessins de George Roux. 12 Grandes Gravures en Chromotypographie. 2 Grandes Cartes en Chromolithographie. Paris: J. Hetzel et Cie., n.d. [1890]. 8 pp ads dated 1890-1891. Original red cloth decorated in black, gilt and silver, all edges gilt. First Illustrated Edition of one of Verne's great mysterious tales of travel: ~Cesar Cascabel and his family have made enough money to return home to France from California. Unfortunately their trip east is cut short, when all their money is stolen. Their only option is to return to France by traveling west, via Alaska, the Bering Strait and Siberia. Along the way, they encounter Mr. Sergius (a Russian) with his companion Kayette (an Alaskan native) both of whom join the band on their trip west. However, Mr. Sergius has a secret which may jeopardize the safety of the family when they reach the Russian frontier. [Kytasaari]~This was the only Verne title that first appeared in this binding -- the cartonnage "aux deux elephants" which some other tales shared, but no other has some of the front cover panels in silver, as here. Not only is this the earliest binding style for CESAR CASCABEL, but also the ad catalogue at the rear is the earliest issue (dated 1890-1891). This is a remarkably fine, bright copy (spine very slightly faded but much less than usual, and with none of the usual foxing within) -- of one of Hetzel's most extravagant bindings. Bottin pp 159-160. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Mademoiselle Clairon. D'après ses correspondances et les rapports de police du temps

Paris: G. Charpentier 1890 - 8vo., printed wrappers, 524 pages; scattered foxing and a touch of edge wear, otherwise a handsome copy of a most fragile publication. First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed to "his friend" Emile Zola: "Zola, son ami, Edmund de Goncourt," on the half-title page. The influence of Goncourt's writings was especially strong on Emile Zola and the Naturalist school. Six years after "Mademoiselle Clairon" appeared, Zola presented the principal eulogy at Goncourt's funeral. He described Goncourt as having a "noble gallantry of mind. [His] errors, if he were guilty of any, were errors arising only from his burning passion for literature." An extraordinary association copy, enclosed in a custom-made folding box [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The Origin of the Aryans: An Account of the Prehistoric Ethnology and Civilisation of Europe

New York: Scribner & Welford. 1890. Second American edition (originally published in the US in 1889). Front hinge amateurishly restored, although not particularly offensively, corner bumped and rubbed, near very good. Front fly, and rear pastedown stamped: "Personal. Morris (Moe) Berg." Signature of "E. Berg," almost certainly that of his sister Ethel Berg, with whom he spent a substantial part of his life, and who later wrote a very scarce and desirable biography, My Brother Morris Berg. The Real Moe. The first half of the book is extensively underlined by Berg in pencil, with occasional notes in his hand. Berg is a remarkable figure, a lower middle class Jewish boy born in New York who was a Princeton and Columbia Law School graduate and professional baseball player who spoke seven languages (and who inspired the remark, "and he can't hit in any of them"). He appeared on the quiz show Information, Please! and put on a dazzling performance, belying the image of the knuckle-headed ballplayer. He used his time on a barnstorming tour of Japan to film Tokyo Harbor, the footage of which proved important to the eventual American war effort, and later was a spy for the US both during and after WWII. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he refused (but which Ethel accepted on his behalf after his death). His baseball card is reportedly on display at CIA headquarters. His life inspired several books, among them Nicholas Dawidoff's 1995 biography The Catcher Was a Spy: The Mysterious Life of Moe Berg. .
