General Sir William Howe's Orderly Book

London: Benjamin Franklin Stevens,, 1890. at Charlestown, Boston and Halifax June 17 1775 to 1776 26 May. To which is added the official abridgment [sic] of General Howe's correspondence with the English government during the siege of Boston, and some military returns and now first printed from the original manuscripts. With an historical introduction by Edward Everett Hale. The whole collected and edited by Benjamin Franklin Stevens. Tall octavo. Original brown cloth, gilt lettered spine, top edges gilt, dark brown coated endpapers. Spine slightly rolled, a little wear to extremities of binding, shallow indentation close to lettering on spine. A very good copy. First edition, scarce in commerce and in British and Irish institutional libraries: Copac locating only the copy at the British Library; well represented in institutional libraries worldwide, but, according to OCLC, almost exclusively in the US. "This curious Orderly Book, which presents every detail of the administration and discipline of the English Army in the siege of Bosron, has been happily preserved for the use of historians, among the American manuscripts in the library of the Royal Institution, in London... [it] was begun on the day of the Battle of Bunker Hill" (Introduction). General "Billy" Howe (1729-1814) was one of the principal British commanders during the American War of Independence: "[he] was an accomplished soldier. In more than half a century of service he proved himself a knowledgeable and meticulous officer and a skilful commander. Yet because he did not end the American rebellion when it seemed most vulnerable he was widely criticized, and historians have continued to puzzle over his failure" (ODNB). Howe's meticulousness is certainly exhibited here and the extensive index matches his high standards in its attention to detail.

        Principles of Economics.

London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1890. Vol. I [all published]. Octavo. Original blue-green cloth, three-line rules blind stamped to head and tail of boards continued in gilt to spine, titles to spine gilt, green endpapers. With Macmillan adverts at end dated February 1890. Contemporary ownership inscription on free endpaper, with the printed bookplate of J. H. Reynolds to the front pastedown. Errata corrected in pencil, and with the occasional pencil marginal note. Lower corners rubbed, with exposure to boards, head of spine very slightly worn; a very good copy. First edition of an economic classic, the first full exposition of Marshall's theoretical position. Keynes described its publication as inaugurating "the modern age of British economics" (Economic Journal, 1940). Schumpeter writes that "Marshall's great work is the classical achievement of the period, that is, the work that embodies more perfectly than any other, the classical situation that emerged around 1900 ? Behind the great achievement there is a still greater message. More than any other economist ? with the exception, perhaps, of Pareto ? Marshall pointed beyond himself ? Naturally his work is out of date. But there is in it a living spring that prevents it from becoming stale" (pp. 834, 840). Marshall maintained for twenty years that this would be followed by a companion volume covering foreign trade, money, trade fluctuations, taxation, collectivism and more, but none was ever published. Running to 750 text pages with a hefty text block that places strain on its case, the book is rare in the original cloth. From the library of John Henry Reynolds, promoter of technical education, secretary to the Manchester Mechanics' Institution -see ODNB.

[MODEL OF THE STEAM YACHT OWNED BY J. PIERPONT MORGAN, THE CORSAIR II]

[Philadelphia, 1890. Model boat, approximately 22 x 45 x 8 inches, in a mahogany and glass case, 27 x 51 x 15 inches. Also with a mahogany table stand, 31 x 51 x 15 inches. In excellent condition, and well prepared for display. A scale model of J. Pierpont Morgan's steam yacht, the Corsair II. In all, Morgan commissioned three yachts that he christened Corsair, with this one operating under his ownership from 1890 to 1898, at which time he sold it to the United States Navy for $225,000. The yacht was then converted for use as a patrol boat in the Spanish- American War, and sailed under the name U.S.S. Gloucester. J.P. Morgan, Jr. had a fourth Corsair built in 1930. During its heyday as Morgan's luxury vessel, the boat served as the flagship of the New York Yacht Club, of which Morgan was Commodore from 1897 to 1899. Designed by J. Beavor Webb, and built in Philadelphia by ship company Neafie & Leavy, the yacht measured 240 feet long. It served as a pleasure cruiser in New York, on which Morgan hosted many social events with famous guests such as Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas Edison, and often took Morgan upstate and to various points on the eastern seaboard. More interestingly, the boat also made regular trips across the Atlantic to Europe during the primary period of Morgan's book and art collecting, and therefore served as a ferry for his acquisitions back to the United States. As a result, it maintained a key role in establishing one of the greatest book collections in America. A terrific model, with masts and booms, standing and running rigging, anchors, anchor davits, winch, deck lights, paneled deck houses, deck rails, companionways, deck lights, open bridge with telegraphs, binnacle and helm, five ship's boats in davits, and other details. The hull is finished in black and green with a gold water line, and is mounted on two turned brass columns in an inlaid mahogany framed glass case and table.

Autograph musical manuscript. Biarritz, 19. XII. 1890.

1890. Large folio. 66 pp. on 17 double pages, paginated 97 to 162, entitled "III / Animé", and captioned at the end, "Biaritz 19 Décembre 1890 Ernest Chausson". A comprehensive handwritten manuscript, including the third movement of his Symphony in B-flat major, Opus 20 - Chausson's only symphony, written in 1890 and often considered his masterpiece. The ms. covers the first version of the finale in an apparently largely completed full score. - After a lengthy preparation, Chausson started working on his symphony in September 1889 and finished it 15 months later. It was first performed on 18 April 1891 at a concert of the Société Nationale de Musique conducted by the composer himself. Hitherto there have only appeared minor works in the antiquarian trade, and even these are very rare. Our ms. is the first of Chausson's major works to appear on the market since the late 1970s.

Lettre autographe signée ("Votre Stéphane Mallarmé"). [Paris, 24 novembre 1890].

1890. Une page petit in-4. Suscription. - A.-J. A Skipper in the Arctic Seas

Longmans, Green & Co, London 1890 - First edition. Folding colored map, frontispiece, 18 plates & illustrations to text. viii, 271, [blank] pp. 8vo. LAND-LUBBERS IN THE ARCTIC. A jolly account of two "land-lubbers" who charter a whaling vessel and sail to the east coast of Greenland, Jan Mayen and Spitzbergen. Clutterbuck makes no excuses for himself and fellow sailor stating that they know "nothing about the places we were going to or of the 'paraphernalia' of Arctic travel", and their awareness of the sea is limited to it being a "dismally damp place." They departed Peterhead on the whaler Traveller (partially covered in zinc to protect against against the ice) on May 1, 1888, for a five month voyage. Clutterbuck initally struggled to settle into life at sea, first due to sea-sickness and then due to odd meal times. And once he'd finally acclimatised, they immediately found themselves in a fog which took ten days to pass. Their muddled bearings are evident on the folding map.Clutterbuck is a keen observer of life on deck and the world around him. He describes the rocky desolation of Jan Mayen, the dramatic coast of Spitzbergen ("a rocky eminence so steep . it would defy a bird to fly up it"), the ice, and the particulars of the Arctic climate in great detail. They also took every opportunity for sport: killing eight hundred and seventy-six seals, four reindeer and one polar bear on the journey and much of the work is devoted to it. Interspersed with all this are hot baths, huge breakfasts ("if there is anything we consider delicious in this sinful world it is young seals kidneys"), and evening pipes.Although published by Longmans, much about this book suggests Clutterbuck contributed toward costs. Probably printed in small numbers, its scarcity on the market is confirmed by no copies being listed on ABPC or Rare Book Hub. Faux tree calf, spine gilt, red morocco label to spine gilt, all edges marbled, some discreet library stamps and minor spotting. A very good copy Folding colored map, frontispiece, 18 plates & illustrations to text. viii, 271, [blank] pp. 8vo [Attributes: First Edition]

Philatelic Ephemera - Annual Mail Packet Steamer Itinerary

London, 25 November 1890. Packet steamer broadside presenting an itinerary for mail delivery in the year 1891 to Grand Turk Island and Bermuda in the British West Indies, via Londonderry and Halifax in Nova Scotia, a service then recently established and offered by Pickford & Black of Halifax, from 1888, with the ship 'Alpha' which was formerly a Cunard Line vessel. Folio. Printed ephemeral document on a light blue leaf, measuring approximately 32,5 x 20,5 cm. Printed for Her Majesty's [Queen Victoria] Stationery Office. Colonial Philatelic Material from the Turks and Caicos is exceedingly scarce. The Nova Scotia Archives (CNSA), Halifax, holds a Pickford & Black collection comprising business and shipping records, detailed registers and manifests, ship logs and so forth. An exceptionally rare West Indies and Halifax ephemeral postal history document, in that it deals with mail steam packet service to Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos, this broadside dates to the Golden Age of Sail, and served to advertise voyages departing from Londonderry and Halifax in Nova Scotia, to deliver letters and parcels to colonial settlers in Bermuda and the Turks and Caicos. According to contemporary publications the vessel on this mail route was the steamship 'Alpha' operated by Pickford & Black West India Steamship Lines, a firm established in Halifax, landing on Grand Turk Island being reputed as particularly dangerous. She plied this specific sea mail route for seven years from 1888 to 1894. The post office notice was also published in the July 1890 issue of the Board of Trade Journal. Sixteen (16) voyages were made in 1891, reminding us of how very much communications have changed in the past century. The Handbook of Jamaica, published in 1892, states: "In 1888 two new lines were established. Messrs. Pickford and Black's West India Steamship Line, which runs the Steamer 'Alpha' between Halifax, Bermuda, Turks Island, Kingston, and... the Anchor Line..." "The 'Alpha' or another steamer is appointed to sail on the following dates - from Halifax the 15th, Bermuda the 20th, and Turks Island the 23rd of each month, arriving at Kingston on or about the 25th. Leaving Kingston on the return voyage on the 27th she calls at Turks Island on the 29th, and Bermuda on the 2nd of each month, arriving at Halifax on the 3rd." The Handbook of Jamaica, published in 1893, further states: "There is a monthly mail service between Jamaica, Halifax, Bermuda and Turks Islands, by means of the steamers of Messrs. Pickford and Black, which arrive here about the 25th of each month and leave three days after. The steamers are subsidized by the Government of the Dominion of Canada." [The itinerary remained the same as in 1891.] The screw propeller steamship 'Alpha' was built in Glasgow in 1863 and first registered to William Cunard, the youngest of Samuel Cunard's two sons. It was initially employed on the Halifax-New York-Bermuda feeder service. In 1869 'Alpha' was purchased by Pickford & Black of Glasgow. In 1880 she was re-fitted by J & G Thomson with new engines. Under the firm of Halifax & West India Steamship Co., which was incorporated in June 1887 with both Pickford & Black being primary shareholders, 'Alpha' operated a mail and passenger service with monthly voyages between Halifax, Bermuda, and Grand Turk Island, from 1888 to 1894, at which time she was replaced by her refitted sister ship 'Beta'. 'Alpha' was sold in 1894 to an S. Barber in Vancouver for trading around Vancouver Island, and wrecked off the coast of British Columbia in 1900. Robert Pickford (1841-1914) and William Anderson Black (1847-1934) were the founding partners of the Halifax shipping firm Pickford & Black established in 1876. At the time of its inception, Pickford & Black was a ship chandlery and hardware firm outfitting fishing and other vessels. In 1877, the partners purchased Seeton's wharf, which was to become known as Pickford & Black's wharf at 51 Upper Water Street, where the ship chandlery branch was extended. By 1887, the firm expanded into the steamship business. In 1888, two years after Cunard's Halifax Bermuda service was canceled, Pickford & Black purchased Cunard vessels 'Alpha' and 'Beta' which had been operating the Halifax-Bermuda route. Pickford & Black's route included also Grand Turk island and Kingston in Jamaica. In 1889, Pickford & Black of Halifax introduced a second service, from Saint John and Halifax, via Bermuda and the Windward Islands, to Demerara, British Guiana, using the vessels Tayworth Castle and Duart Castle, which continued until 1913. They also operated steamer lines in the Atlantic provinces. The firm also acted as agents for several leading marine insurance underwriters, including Lloyd's of London, as well as for numerous European steamship lines, including the owners of the ship Imo, which was involved in the Halifax Explosion in 1917. From 1889-1893 and again from 1908-1911 Pickford owned the now historic house (listed on the Canadian Register) at 1991 Prince Arthur Street in Halifax. Robert Pickford retired in 1911 and the company became Pickford & Black Ltd. The company is still in business, with its office located in the Gogswell Tower on Barrington Street in Halifax. This document further marks the beginning of a new era of communication, for Bermuda at least, with the official opening of the Halifax - Bermuda submarine telegraph cable line on 12 July 1890, which had a decisive impact on Bermuda's tourism and commerce. It was not until 1898 that the first telegraph cable reached the Turks and Caicos, with connections installed from Bermuda to Grand Turk, and from there to Jamaica. Some highlights of early British West Indies mail service: In 1833, mail carrying packet vessels terminated their routes at Halifax, until, that is, Samuel Cunard was awarded a contract by the British Admiralty to provide a monthly mail boat service between Halifax and Bermuda. This was his first trans-Atlantic service before his shipping line expanded hugely and later became world famous as the Cunard Line. Regular 'steamer' mail service began in the West Indies in 1842 when the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company started a twice-monthly service between Falmouth and the West Indies, having established its base and a coaling station on Grand Turk Island. Alas, in the same year the steamship 'Medina' of England ran upon a reef on the coast of Grand Trunk Island, and was sunk. Mail service from England was discontinued to this island for a short time. On March 1st, the first steamship to enter Bermuda waters anchored at Five Fathom Hole. She was the Royal Mail Steam Packet Thames, inaugurating what would become a regular call on her trips between the West Indies and England. Her route originated at Nassau in The Bahamas and the stop at Bermuda afforded an opportunity to both pick up and deliver mail in transit to and from the English port of Southampton. Due to the high risks of safe shore landings, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company quickly transferred its main West Indies packet station from Grand Turk Island to St. Thomas in Jamaica in September 1842. As a result, St. Thomas became the first stop on the Leeward Islands route and a British Post Office was opened there in late 1842. The Government of the Bahamas was paying for "postal communication between Grand Turk and Nassau", which consisted of a schooner making regular trips to and fro. In 1850, Bahamas governor John Gregory wrote a note "pointing out the benefits that might be derived from substituting for the present miserable schooner which conveys mails and passengers from St. Thomas to Nassau with a small screw steamer that might drop the English Mails at Grand Turk and Inagua and take the homeward bound mails from those islands on her return from Nassau to St. Thomas." In November 1850, Samuel Cunard introduced his steam packet service from New York to St. Thomas, with a call at Bermuda in both directions. It was an extension of his successful 1840-incorporated British and North American Royal Mail Steam-Packet Company on the Liverpool, Halifax, Boston route. Annoyed that his passengers had only sparse hotel accommodations in Bermuda, he threatened to withdraw his ships, which led to the construction of Bermuda's first luxury hotel, the Hamilton Hotel, built by the Corporation of Hamilton. The New York portion of the service was not as successful as his earlier Halifax-Bermuda direct service, and was canceled in May of 1854. In May 1854, Cunard extended his direct Halifax Bermuda service. This route remained in place until January, 1880, when a number of West Indian islands replaced St. Thomas as ports of call. The West Indies postal routes of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company called for at least 12 steam vessels covering hundreds of thousands of route-miles, with stops at some 60 ports. These early steamers were of the side-wheel type with auxiliary sails. Screw propeller steamers were introduced in the 1860s.

Urquhart. Hys Booke." Bel ouvrage dans une charmante reliure.1 vol. 12mo. 21 India ink drawings on 19 ll. + 2 crossed out sketches. Contemporary half vellum, boards covered with white silk. Fine set of cartoons inspired by a rare novel by Pithie W. Booth, Euphemia and Salem: A tale. (Aberdeen, Brown for the Author, 1863). Very fine drawings in a nice binding. Mid-Victorian poetry, 1860-1879: an annotated biobibliography. Par Catherine W. Reilly, II, p.48.

Autograph corrections in: P[eter] Tschaikowsky. Eugen Onegin. Lyrische Scenen in drei Aufzügen. Text nach Puschkin. Deutsch von A[ugust] Bernhard. [...] Clavierauszug vom Componisten. Hamburg, D. Rahter, [1890].

1890. Large 4to. Numerous autogr. corrections, insertions and additions on a total of 76 pages of the piano score, comprising 219 pp. altogether. Contemp. green cloth. Mahler's handwritten notes in black ink in the right margin add the names of the actors of the Vienna premiere of "Eugen Onegin" on 19 Nov. 1897: [Louise] Kaulich as Larina, [Marie] Renard as Tatyana, [Margarete] Michalek or [Jenny] Pohlner as Olga, [Edith] Walker [ultimately replaced by Ida Baier Liebhart in the performance] as Filipjewna, [Josef] Ritter as Onegin, [Fritz] Schrötter [i.e. Schrödter] as Lenski, [Wilhelm] Hess as Gremin, [Hans] Frei or [Ferdinand] Marian as captain (both names struck out), [Hans] Frei as Triquet, and, finally, [Anton] Schittenhelm as Gillot. - Also, there are 76 pages with extensive edits, some rather extensive (corrections and occasional deletions), written in pencil and blue crayon. - Provenance: From the estate of the Wagner tenor Hermann Winkelmann (1847-1912), who had known Mahler personally. After Winkelmann's death, the present score was given to his son, Eduard Walter Winkelmann, who saved it after the bombing of Osnabrück - one of the few family pieces salvaged from the rubble. Via his estate to his son Hugo Hermann Winkelmann (1912-2006), President of the Senate of the Austrian Supreme Court, and given by him as a gift to his daughter Heidelinde. Includes Hugo Hermann Winkelmann's statement of authenticity: "This piano score was used by Gustav Mahler for the Vienna premiere of 'Eugene Onegin' at the Vienna Court Opera on 19 November 1897. The handwritten entries including text and tonal changes are from Mahler's hand, as my father told me | Hermann Winkelmann". - Some marginal defects, a few loose leaves; actors' names slightly trimmed by the binder.

Archive, consisting of manuscripts, typescripts, letters by and to Ernst Haeusserman and his widow, numerous documents, and extensive collections. Also includes the partial Nachlass of Ernst Haeusserman's father Reinhold Häussermann. Various places, c. 1890-1983.

1890. "With Haeusserman, a part of Vienna died", wrote Rolf Hochhuth in his obituary in the "Weltwoche", and truly, the final, splendid age of Austrian theatre history passed away with this great man, an age that had begun in 1954, when Haeusserman was appointed director of the Josefstadt Theatre. A favourite of 1930s audiences, the yong romantic lead Haeusserman had to forsake his acting career when Austria joined the Third Reich; after his emigration to the U.S., he continued behind the scenes as personal assistant to Max Reinhardt. After the end of the war, he served as director of the Vienna Burgtheater and of other important Viennese playhouses. - Haeusserman's copious estate contains not only 317 pp. of manuscripts and typescripts and 45 pp. of autograph letters, but also some 3680 pp. of letters to him by such prominent writers as Rosa Albach-Retty, Ingeborg Bachmann, Albert Bassermann, Hedwig Bleibtreu, Franz Theodor Csokor, Ernst Deutsch, Richard Eybner, Adrienne Gessner, Nora Gregor, Friedrich Hacker, Marte Harell, Mirko Jelusich, Oscar Karlweis, Fritz Klingenbeck, Leopoldine Konstantin, Alexander Lernet-Holenia, Wolfgang Liebeneiner, Fred Liewehr, Ernst Lothar, Lilly Marberg, Fritz Molden, Lothar Müthel, Susi Nicoletti, Marcel Prawy, Géza von Radványi, Gottfried Reinhardt, Hermann Röbbeling, Adolf Rott, Robert Stolz, Hans und Helene Thimig, Hilde Wagener, Oskar Werner, Else Wohlgemuth, and Carl Zuckmayer. - Upon Haeusserman's death, Senta Berger, Maria Bill, Gertrude Fröhlich-Sandner, Paul Hubschmid, Friedrich Kayssler, Marthe Keller, Rudolf Kirchschläger, Erni Kniepert-Fellerer, Cissy Kraner, Gustav Kropatschek, Erwin Lanc, Ingrid Leodolter, Conrad H. Lester, Ernst Wolfram Marboe, Fritz Marsch, Peter Matic, Kitty Mattern, Federik Mirdita, Heinz Moog, Herbert Moritz, Klaudia Nagy, Brigitte Neumeister, Romuald Pekny, Gisela Prossnitz, Harry Reich-Ebner, Gottfried Reinhardt, Georg Robor, Sieghardt Rupp, Günther Schneider-Siemssen, Walter Schuppich, Dany Sigel, Marietta Torberg, Siegfried Trebitsch, Michael Verhoeven, Eberhard Waechter, Senta Wengraf, Oskar Werner, Guido Wieland und Hugo Wiener were among those who offered their condolences (a total of 224 pp.). No less interesting is the partial Nachlass of Ernst Haeusserman's father, the Burgtheater actor Reinhold Häessermann (1884-1947), containing some 275 ff. of letters to him, 267 ff. of various documents, 163 photographs (portraits and costume photos, photographed postcards and snapshots, notebooks, and speeches by contemporaries such as Rosa Albach-Retty, Hedwig Bleibtreu, Eugen Schmalenbach, and Otto Tressler.         A fine collection of four late 19th century original photographs of scenes in Hong Kong. Hong Kong, [circa 1890].

1890. 4 albumen prints, 190 x 725 mm and 205 x 270 mm, all mounted on contemporary paper (285 x 40 mm) with manuscript titles in French. "Hong-Kong / Panorama général": a fine, large-scale panorama embracing all of Victoria, the capital of Hong Kong, from the perspective of the harbour. The scene is centred upon the concentration of major buildings along the grand quayside of the Praya, including the City Hall, the Hongkong & Shanghai Bank Building and the Hong Kong Hotel, the six-story building featured in the centre-right of the panorama. Notably, the hotel seems to still be in a partially-completed state, as construction of the edifice was not completed until 1892, a detail which helps to date the photograph. Numerous boats can be seen plying the harbour in the foreground, evidence that Hong Kong was one of Asia's busiest ports. Victoria Peak rises above the city, and the thin white line shown ascending the mountain, above City Hall, is the famous Peak Tram. This funicular railway was completed in 1888. - "Hong-Kong / La Rade prise de Bowen Road": an engaging view looking down upon Hong Kong harbour from the perspective of Bowen Road. The line of the celebrated Peak Tram, completed in 1888, is shown running up the slope of Victoria Peak, while numerous ships ply the harbour in the background. Bowen Road was named after George Ferguson Bowen, who served as the 9th Governor of Hong Kong from 1883 to 1885. - "Hong - Kong / Anniversaire de la naissance de la Reine": this fascinating view captures the pageantry of the celebration of the birthday of Queen Victoria. Spectators are shown observing vast lines of troops as they fire an armed salute in honour of Her Majesty, while tall ships decorated with banners are moored in the harbor, in the foreground. Queen Victoria (reigned 1837-1901) personified the British Empire, and her birthday (May 24th) was celebrated annually throughout Britain's colonial possessions. Another example of the same photograph, entitled in manuscript, "Queen's Birthday Parade Hong Kong," can be found in the collections of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY (accession no. 86.140.310). - "Hong-Kong / Une Rue dans la ville Chinoise": this photograph captures an interesting street scene in Hong Kong's traditional "Chinatown", otherwise known as the Wan Chai District, located to the east of Victoria. While Victoria had a more "anglicized" appearance, befitting the centre of British colonial administration, Chinese modes of building construction, signage and ways of life prevailed in Wan Chai.

The Journal of Indian Art, Vol 3, Nos 25-32

London: W. Griggs, 1890. Hardbound. Contents are VG or better, front inner hinge and gutter weak. All plates are stamped with a small, one line stamp on the verso from an art school library, and there is no bleed-through to image.. Green gilt embossed publisher's cloth. Unpaginated, and filled with breathtaking colored chromolithographs and other two-tone plates and images. Scholarly literature on the decorative arts in India is scanty and mainly in learned journals. The Journal of Indian Art and Industries (1886-1916) is the most important and contains numerous pioneering studies. Original front and rear wraps from each issue are bound in at the rear. These covers have the contents of each issue printed on the. This is the exceedingly rare third volume of this seminal and Influential periodical on Indian arts. See article by Peter H. Hoffenberg entitled "John Lockwood Kipling, W. H. Griggs and The Journal of Indian Art and Industry" written in 2003 for a complete description of this periodical. He states: "...Kipling's and Buck's vision encouraged use of the latest photographic and reproductive innovations to ensure accurate and attractive illustrations of lasting quality. Griggs and his editorial staff took advantage of that encouragement and of the most current technology to produce exquisite color chromo- and photo-lithographs bound in leather. Black and white illustrations were also included...No doubt the publisher applied chromo-lithographic technologies from Britain and the continent, but the pages of the Journal also included illustrations resulting from innovative work in the heliogravure and collotype sections of India's own Revenue and Agriculture Department, particularly the offices devoted to the Survey of India. " The first 4 or 5 volumes of this publication seem exceedingly scarce.

Septembre 1890. Paulus.
