Autograph Letter, Signed

N.p. (Hartford): N.p., 1889. (3)pp., rectos only. Dated July 15, 1889, from Clemens to his daughter, Clara, signed “Papa,” about a train disaster in Virginia. An update about the wreck arrived in a letter while Clemens was dining with his friend, Charles Dudley Warner, a fellow American writer. Clemens’s vivid description of the event brings alive the immediacy of the disaster. He writes, “... that late accident still grows & grows. There had been a washout; several hundred feet of the road were gone; two hours after midnight that sleeping-car train dashed in to that vacant space in a pouring rain, & mingled its wreckage with the chaos of rocks, weeds, rails & freshet-rubbish contributed by the washout; the crushed passengers woke up & wailed out in that rainy thick darkness; then the cheerful car-stove came to their help; & gave them light, & burnt them up.” He goes on to describe how a young girl (Miss Patty Carrington) was killed in the fire, and how the girl’s adoptive mother, Mrs. Judge Thompson, who survived the crash, lost all of her clothing and baggage containing two centuries-worth of family heirlooms as well. The accident to which he refers happened on July 2, 1889, on the Norfolk & Western Railroad line near Thaxton, VA. It was the most serious accident in the railroad’s history: seventeen people were killed and many more were injured. Clemens closes the letter on a lighter note, describing a piece by Beethoven performed by his neice: “the one where, all along & all along, half a dozen of the bass notes keep rolling back down stairs a little way — only to the first landing; & get up again & roll down again & are the darling of the piece & the charm of it.” He signs the letter, “Goodbye dear heart — write me again. Papa. P.S. I don’t mean this letter as an answer to your letter, it is merely a response.” With the original envelope addressed to Clara in Elmira, NY, where Clemens and his family kept a summer home. A dramatic and historical letter that captures Clemens’s instinct for storytelling. Fine.

        Victoria, B. C. 1889 [bird's-eye view]

Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada: Ellis & Co., publishers of "The Colonist", 1889. Tinted lithographic bird's-eye view after R.H., numbered on the image with a linked identifying index beneath. 27 1/4 x 42 1/8 inches. A fine image: Victoria viewed from high above the straits of San Juan Fuca, looking north Rare: Reps records just 8 examples (4 in Canada and 4 in the United States). Reps notes that the artist is 'R.H.' but gives no further information. The key beneath identifies 63 places or buildings of interest (including the publisher's offices on Government Street) and all the main streets are also identified. Victoria was founded by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1843 as Fort Camosun as a fur trading post, the settlement was later called Fort Victoria, in honour of Queen Victoria. When the crown Colony of Vancouver Island was established in 1849, a town was laid out on the site and made the capital of the colony. The Chief Factor of the fort, James Douglas was made governor of the colony, and would be the leading figure in the early development of the city until his retirement in 1864. With the discovery of gold on the British Columbia mainland in 1858, Victoria became the port, supply base, and outfitting centre for miners on their way to the Fraser Canyon gold fields, mushrooming from a population of 300 to over 5000 literally within a few days. In 1866 when the island was politically united with the mainland, Victoria remained the capital of the new united colony and became the provincial capital when British Columbia joined the Canadian Confederation in 1871. Victoria was incorporated as a city in 1862. ... In 1886, with the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus on Burrard Inlet, Victoria's position as the commercial centre of British Columbia was lost to the city of Vancouver. The city subsequently began cultivating an image of genteel civility within its natural setting, an image aided by the impressions of visitors such as Rudyard Kipling, the opening of the popular Butchart Gardens in 1904 and the construction of the Empress Hotel by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1908. Amon Carter Catalogue 1867; Catalogue of the National Map Collection. National Archives of Canada H3/640-Victoria-1889; Hébert & Dempsey Panoramic Maps of Cities in the United States and Canada 1077; Reps 38 (8 copies).

Toronto : William Briggs, 1889. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo. 304 p. : ill. ; 19 cm. A slight rippling to the cover and minor edgewear with crushed end spines. Inside pages are age toned and sporadic spotting. Previous owners name written on back of frontis piece. Generally very good copy. Broken shackles by Glenelg. [pseud.], with portrait of "Old Man Henson,"in his slavery days called "Charley Chance," and a number of illustrations and the front. of "Old Man Henson," . Previous owners with gift inscription "Helen Maxwells from D. B. Rutherford August 1890" Quite rare., In 1889, 'Broken Shackles' was published in Toronto under the pseudonym of Glenelg. This very unique book, containing the recollections of a resident of Owen Sound, Ontario, an African American known as Old Man Henson, was one of the very few books that documented the journey to Canada from the perspective of a person of African descent. Henson was a great storyteller and the spark of life shines through as he describes the horrors of slavery and his goal of escaping its tenacious hold. His times as a slave in Maryland, his refuge in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and his ultimate freedom in Canada are vividly depicted through his remembrances. The stories of Henson's family, friends and enemies will both amuse and shock the readers of this book. It is interesting to discover that his observations of life's struggles and triumphs are as relevant today as they were in his time.

Babbage's Calculating Engines. Being a Collection of Papers Relating to Them; Their History, and Construction. [Compiled by Henry Prevost Babbage.]

London: E. and F.N. Spon, 1889. First edition. The principal source of information for the technical operation of Babbage's Difference and Analytical engines, and a rare book on the market.

& “Toward the end of his life, Babbage began assembling his own and other's previously published writings on the Difference and Analytical Engines with the intent of publishing a history of the machines, but died before he could accomplish this task. He had the first 294 pages of this work typeset and printed on slightly varying types of paper during his lifetime. It would appear that its purpose was to collect the most significant published writings, many of which had appeared as obscure pamphlets or in little-read journals, together with a listing of what remained unpublished, including all of Babbage's notebooks and engineering drawings [listed on pp. 271-294], in the hope that his unfinished projects might be completed at some future date. The book was completed by Babbage's youngest son, Major-General Henry Prevost Babbage, to whom Babbage had bequeathed his calculating engines and everything pertaining to them.

& & “Were it not for this volume and the bibliography of Babbage's works published both here (on the last three printed pages of the book) and in Babbage's autobiography, Babbage's achievements might have been forgotten. As it turned out the information was never implemented literally, probably because construction of the mechanical Analytical Engine was just too complex a project for any organization except a government to undertake. Yet Babbage's ambitions and his ideas remained alive in the minds of people working in mechanical computation long after his technology had fallen into obsolescence. When Vannevar Bush suggested in 1936 that electromechanical technology might be the way to realize ‘Babbage's large conception’ of the Analytical Engine, he cited this volume among his references; and in building the electromechanical Harvard Mark I, Howard Aiken saw himself as fulfilling Babbage's ambition” (OOC).

Hyman 254; OOC 94 (modern reprint only); Van Sinderen CB80, showing that Babbage listed a History of the Analytical Engine as being “in the press” in 1864. & 4to: 287 x 225 mm. Pp. [8], 342, [4]. Portrait, folding table, 15 plates (several folding, including 1 large-folding, with some repairs to the margin). Modern dark green cloth in imitation of the original binding, “Babbage’s Calculating Engines” lettered in gilt on upper board and on spine, some leaves browned due to acidic paper, old repairs to folds of some plates, armorial bookplate on title verso.

LEAVES OF GRASS with Sands at Seventy & a Backward Glance o'er Travel'd. Richard Maurice Bucke's Copy

Camden, New Jersey: Self Published, 1889 Whitman, Walt. LEAVES OF GRASS with Sands at Seventy & a Backward Glance o'er Travel'd Roads. Camden, New Jersey, [May 31st,] 1889. Privately Printed. First edition thus. 8vo., 382pp + 20pp. Late 20th-century limp black morocco, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. A very good copy showing some use with some modest restoration to the spine crown & corners. Custom clamshell case. One of only 300 copies of Leaves of Grass printed in commemoration of Whitman's 70th birthday, boldly signed by Whitman on the title page. With six portraits of the author, including the famous original mounted frontispiece photograph with a butterfly resting on his finger. This copy is further enhanced by its association with Whitman's great friend & his literary executor, Richard Maurice Bucke, who has inscribed & signed the front fly-leaf: "J. N. Greenshields from his friend R. M. Bucke [three line quotation from "I Sing The Body Electric", these lines underscored in the text] Asylum, London, Ont. 6 Nov. '95." Greenshields was a prominent Montreal lawyer & important financier. Bucke was born in England & raised in Canada, studied medicine & served as superintendent of the London, Ontario Asylum for the insane from 1877 until his death in 1902. He wrote two enthusiastic studies of Whitman; Walt Whitman: A Contemporaneous Study, [1883] [was the first biography of Whitman ever written] & Walt Whitman: Man and Poet, [1897]. Bucke helped edit Whitman's Complete Writings, [1902] & In Re Walt Whitman, [1893]. Bucke's Cosmic Consciousness, [1901] reflects much of Whitman's mysticism. "Whitman's influence over Bucke, a prematurely modern man smothered by the starched collars & repressed sexuality of the period, was profound. Whitman's fearless, infectious enthusiasm, prodigious lust for life & distain of convention consumes Bucke & frees him from his social bondage". An important & notable Association Copy. "When the superintendent of the Canadian insane asylum, Dr. Maurice Bucke, meets poet Walt Whitman, his life and that of his wife and patients is radically changed. Like Dr. Bucke, Whitman has avant-garde ideas on the subject of mental illness. "Dreamers" is based on true events." - From a review of the 1990 NFB film Beautiful Dreamers, staring Rip Torn as Whitman & Colm Feore as Bucke.. Signed by Author. 70th Birthday Edition.

        The Carrier Dove

San Francisco: (Library of Spiritual Experience), 1889. Professionally rebacked, interior fine. Quarto. Volume VI. Nos. 1 -52. Illustrated custom bound in full brown calf ornamented and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, patterned endpapers Our search for information concerning Julia Schlesinger and The Carrier Dove led us to the Schlesinger library at Radcliffe (there is no connection) and then to the California State Library. There, Mrs. Sibylle Zemitas of the California History Section proved quite helpful. Noting that Schlesinger's book Workers in the Vineyards is listed in only four libraries, she searched their "California Information File 1846-1945" and the "California Death Index 1945+" and the "California Newspaper Index: 1904-1949", to no avail. Mrs. Zemitas did forward a photocopy of the San Francisco Call May 27, 1896, which reproduces a line-drawing of Julia Schlessinger [sic] on page ten, captioning her as secretary and Director-elect of the State Association of Spiritualists. The text notes that she was also elected State librarian and that she resided in San Jose.& Back to the Carrier Dove. The last issue of the year on December 28, 1889 carries a biography of Julia Schlesinger which is frustrating in its generalities. A vague reference to her having been born and reared in the west, a mention that she has children, originally started the Carrier Dove as a children's paper and that in January she will also be writing for a forthcoming monthly periodical The Gleamer. The facing page contains a line drawing of an intelligent looking woman of early middle age which the "biography" calls "an excellent likeness".& Various of the fifty-two mastheads list her as Editor, Co-publisher and member of the paper's Board of Directors. An earlier issue presented a frontispiece of Dr. Louis Schlesinger (presumably Julia's husband) together with only a slightly more informative biographical sketch.& Mrs. Zemitas concludes her informative letter: "It is very exciting to have been able to acquire The Carrier Dove for 1889, a rare find with interesting topic. Much has been written on spiritualism in California and in San Francisco. It seems that prominent women of the movement are only mentioned in most sources..." .

Autograph musical quotation signed in full, being four measures from the composer's tone-poem for orchestra, "Tod und Verklärung," op. 24

Undated, but after 1889. Attractively double-matted in two windows and framed in decorative gilt together with a photographic image of Strauss as a young man. Overall size ca. 455 x 355 mm. . Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration) was first performed, with Strauss conducting, on June 21, 1890 at the Eisenach Festival. The work represents the reflections of a dying artist on his life - the innocence of childhood, the passions of youth, the artist's aspirations, attainments, and failures and, finally, the soul's leaving the body to find that which was unobtainable in life.
