(Sallaz/Am Rhyn, Handfeuerwaffen Gradzug-Systeme.         Idylls of the King

Henry Altemus, Philadelphia, 1889. Fine with no dust jacket. First Edition Thus. First Printing. Hard Cover Publisher's full blue cloth, spine in six compartments separated by gilt borders, gilt lettering in two compartments, gilt devices in remainder, elaborate gilt, silver and black decoration on cover. Includes all 12 books, each with its own title page. Illustrated with 37 full-page, tissue-protected plates by Gustave Dore. Idylls of the King, published between 1859 and 1885, is a cycle of twelve narrative poems by the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892; Poet Laureate from 1850) which retells the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him, and the rise and fall of Arthur's kingdom. The whole work recounts Arthur's attempt and failure to lift up mankind and create a perfect kingdom, from his coming to power to his death at the hands of the traitor Mordred. Individual poems detail the deeds of various knights, including Lancelot, Geraint, Galahad, and Balin and Balan, and also Merlin and the Lady of the Lake. The Idylls are written in blank verse. Gustave Dore (1832-1883) is one of the most popular illustrators of all tme. He was a prolific engraver, artist, illustrator, and sculptor, working primarily as a wood and steel engraver. He produced over 100, 000 sketches in his lifetime, and lived to be 50 years old. Even though he was an untrained, self-taught artist, who never used a live model, and who could not sketch from nature, his work is considered some of the most important in the entire engraving art world. Although he illustrated over 200 books, some with more than 400 plates, he is primarily known for his illustrations to The Divine Comedy, particularly The Inferno, his illustrations to Don Quixote, Idylls of the King, and Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. Expertly refurbished, tight, square and clean. All of the illustrations are in perfect condition. FINE. B Drawings. Folio 13" - 23" tall. 363 pp

Includes a 200-foot long sea serpent that occasionally ventures out of sea and chases the natives, a fountain of youth which rejuvenates limbs put into it, a pool which petrifies flesh instantly, giant birds of prey with 30-foot wing spans, ruins of a vast uninhabited city of great antiquity at the north pole, and more.         The Revision of the Statutes of the State of New York and the Revisers . An Address before the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, January 22, 1889. By William Allen Butler

Banks & Brothers, New York and Albany 1889 - (10 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches). [2], ii, 100pp. 3 engraved portraits. Extra-illustrated with 10 letters (9 ALS, 1 TLS) on legal matters. Half dark blue crushed morocco and marbled paper covered boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, lettered and decorated in gilt. Provenance: Adrian Hoffman Joline (bookplate) Large paper edition, one of only 25 numbered copies: this copy extra-illustrated with letters by Butler, Duer, Spencer and others. The 1828 revision of the statutes of New York, undertaken by John Duer, Benjamin F. Butler and John C. Spencer, holds a celebrated status in the legal history of the state. It "was the first attempt to create and establish for any commonwealth governed by the English Common Law and by legislative statutes . of a body of written law systematically arranged, based on the principles of law as a science, regulating the exercise of public and private rights, establishing domestic, property and contract relations and covering the administration of every department of the government, without touching the integrity of the unwritten law, or transcending the proper bound of legislative control" (Goodrich, Restatement and Codification , p. 253). Fearing that the importance of the revision would be lost on future generations, William Allen Butler (B. F. Butler's son and a noted New York lawyer) organized portraits of the revisers to be commissioned and the present work published to detail the history of their project, as well as provide biographical details on their lives. The present issue is a rare large paper edition, limited to 25 numbered copies (this being number 19). An early owner of this copy has extra-illustrated the work with letters by William Allen Butler (3), Benjamin Franklin Butler (3) , Duer (1) and Spencer (1) Francis L. Stetson (1) and Thomas Addis Emmet (1), all on legal matters, some written to each other. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        [The Chronicles of Barsetshire:]

London: Chapman and Hall,, 1889?-91. The Warden; Barchester Towers; Doctor Thorne; Framley Parsonage; The Small House at Allington; The Last Chronicle of Barset. 6 works in 8 volumes, octavo (194 x 130 mm). Contemporary brown half calf for Sotheran & Co, twin red and tan morocco labels, spines richly gilt in compartments, brown cloth boards ruled in gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. With wood-engraved frontispieces by F. A. Fraser. A few minor marks to cloth. An excellent set. An attractive set of the collected Chronicles of Barsetshire. Trollope was famously never published in a complete uniform edition and Chapman and Hall's collected Chronicles of Barsetshire, which was originally published in 1878, is the nearest attempt at a collected edition, aside from the Chapman and Hall and Ward, Lock and Co.'s cheaply produced editions. "The history of [Chapman & Hall's 1878 collected edition of the Chronicles of Basetshire] is not without interest. Trollope himself was very anxious that his Barsetshire novels should be brought together in a uniform series. Originally the venture was to comprise only six volumes, for he did not himself regard The Small House as one of the Barsetshire set; but he consented to its inclusion at the urgent request of Chapman & Hall" (Sadleir p. 245).

        A Nine Men's Morrice

London Longmans, Green and Co. 1889. 8vo. 358pp. + 16pp ads. Publisher's deep red cloth titled in gilt to spine. Minor rubbing and edgewear to extremities, sunning to spine and light bumping to spine ends, a very good copy. Broughton Reading Room and Library labels to front flyleaf and the second blank leaf preceding the half title, which particular depredations of librarianship are only balanced by the fact that the book is inscribed by the author to the title page:#"With the author's kindest regards (as well as blotting paper will allow them to be written) Walter Herries Pollock."#Otherwise internally clean, with some thumbmarks here and there, a tight solid very good copy. Walter Herries Pollock is one of those forgotten characters of the 19th century literary scene; editor of The Saturday Review, published poet and critic, enthusiastic and successful amateur fencer and friends with all the glittering literati including Kipling, Stevenson and Wilde amongst others. He penned a biography of Henry Irving and generally put himself about a bit. This collection of weird and eerie tales is another to join the ranks of books that shouldn't have been forgotten but have, and Pollock is now best known for having written a biography of Jane Austen and collaborated in the revival of historical fencing techniques. Scarce.

Notes sur le théorème de Bachet. 1889-1893

        Looking Backward 2000-1887

Ticknor and Company, Boston 1889 - A lovely early rebind (by Case, Lockwood & Brainard, Hartford), half leather over marbled paper-covered boards, with peach endpapers, of the stated "sixteenth edition" (meaning "sixteenth printing," in modern parlance) of Bellamy's "utopian" novel, of a future America where no need is seen for money or wages, since the great collective simply distributes to every person what he or she needs, even replacing ridiculous "individual" umbrellas with a vast collective rain shield when it rains. (Whether the trees and flowers consider this "utopian" is not revealed.) An ever-popular collectivist fantasy (see the similarly cashless, wageless society of Gene Roddenberry's initial "Star Trek") though the author might have thought to consider the history of virtually every early American colony, including the Massachusetts Bay, where Gov. William Bradford reported the colonists went hungry for years because they refused to work in the fields, preferring instead to steal other people's crops before they were ripe. But then, in 1623, Gov. Bradford reported that "Instead of famine now God gave them plenty, and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God." What had happened? Why, in 1623 Bradford simply replaced the earlier "utopian" system of collectivism, in which everyone was to take what they needed from the empty storerooms of "the common stock," and instead "gave each household a parcel of land and told them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit." Their "early form of socialism" was "why the Pilgrims were starving," explains historian Richard J. Marbury. But then Gov. Bradford "abolished socialism" in the colony, "replacing it with a free market, and that was the end of famines." Or, to let economist Thomas Sowell summarize (from his book "Marxism: Philosophy and Economics"): "The disjuncture between vision and experience was nowhere better illustrated than in the traumatic post-revolutionary experience of Lenin, as he applied the Marxist vision and watched a whole nation sink into economic chaos and starvation by the millions." Reality can be SO inconvenient. Still a significant piece of early American science fiction, no matter how wrongheaded. Previous owner Cora E. Andrus has dated this copy to top of title page "1889." (Copyright reads 1888.) Top board corners are peeking through the leather. 470 pp. followed by 8 pp. of ads, mostly for other Ticknor & Co. titles, but also including wonderful ads for a bristle-free felt tooth polisher and for the Boston Pants Co., 111 Chauncy St. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Photo Album]: Canary Islands, Madeira, Bermuda, and the Caribbean

Various. [circa 1889]. Large folio. Half leather ruled in gilt and paper covered boards. Boards stained and rubbed, internal foxing, some fading to some images but overall very good. 114 mostly larger albumen prints, mounted on card leaves (between one and four to a page; usually two), and numbered on the leaves below the image (the album is numbered to 120, with space left for the other six images, but those spaces are unnumbered and with no evidence that the images were ever mounted in the volume). Image sizes range mostly between 4" x 6" and 9" x 12". A fair number of the images have captions in the image, many others are captioned in ink on the mount. A wonderful album that begins in Portugal with nine images of the Coast of Funchal in Madeira (harbor views, various images of the public gardens, "bullock cart," and two men bearing a woman lying in a hammock), nine of Tenerife in the Canary Islands (La Laguna, Mount Teide, harbor views with ships, massive dragon tree,), and the Azores (two photos creating a panorama of the Ponta Delgada harbor, Church of St. Sebastian, hot springs, baths at Furnas); and then extends to several islands in the West Indies including 23 of Trinidad (Port of Spain, dock views, ice house, botanical gardens, date palms, government house, water works, and pitch lakes), 21 of Bermuda ("Devil's Hole" on the north coast, Mullet Bay in Tucker's Town, lily fields, stone quarry, floating dock, Princess Hotel), 17 of Jamaica (Kingston Harbor, Kingston street scenes, fruit sellers, barracks at Newcastle, Hamilton sugar workers), nine of Barbados (Bridgetown, cabbage palms, arrowroot mills, "Negroes Houses," sugar cane harvesting, collection and processing), four of Cuba (Havana, taxi driver, policeman, tobacco plantation), three each of the Bahamas ("convicts at work," sponge shipping), St. Lucia (harbor), two of St. Thomas (sailing ships), one of Martinique (harbor), and concluding with three of the harbor in Plymouth, England (lighthouse and sound). Near the end are also a group of portraits, possibly commercial images, of native islanders captioned below: "Negress," "Mulatto," Quadroon," "Native with 'Fer de lance [snake],'" and "Women wearing Capote."Of the 114 photographs only about a dozen can be credited. Seven of the images from Tenerife are marked in the negative "J.H.T.E." While little is could be found about J.H.T.E., our research did turned up an auction record for an album sold in the late '90s containing several of his images of Gran Canaria, and as well as a letter credited to the same initials in a 1876 issue of The British Journal of Photography asking about transporting dry photographic plates over long distances. The other photographer that can be identified is Jacob Frank Coonley, a sign painter turned photography from New York who, with partner George Bernard, worked for Matthew Brady for several years during the Civil War. Following the conflict he worked photographing railroad construction in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia for the military, then in 1880 he worked with theatrical portraitist J.M. Moran, before relocating to Nassau in the Bahamas in 1889. While only three photographs are credited to "J.F. Coonley," we suspect three additional images of nearby Cuba might also be his workAn exceptional album of photographs. .

        Victoria, B. C. 1889 [bird's-eye view]

Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada: Ellis & Co., publishers of "The Colonist", 1889. Tinted lithographic bird's-eye view after R.H., numbered on the image with a linked identifying index beneath. A fine image: Victoria viewed from high above the straits of San Juan Fuca, looking north Rare: Reps records just 8 examples (4 in Canada and 4 in the United States). Reps notes that the artist is 'R.H.' but gives no further information. The key beneath identifies 63 places or buildings of interest (including the publisher's offices on Government Street) and all the main streets are also identified. Victoria was founded by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1843 as Fort Camosun as a fur trading post, the settlement was later called Fort Victoria, in honour of Queen Victoria. When the crown Colony of Vancouver Island was established in 1849, a town was laid out on the site and made the capital of the colony. The Chief Factor of the fort, James Douglas was made governor of the colony, and would be the leading figure in the early development of the city until his retirement in 1864. With the discovery of gold on the British Columbia mainland in 1858, Victoria became the port, supply base, and outfitting centre for miners on their way to the Fraser Canyon gold fields, mushrooming from a population of 300 to over 5000 literally within a few days. In 1866 when the island was politically united with the mainland, Victoria remained the capital of the new united colony and became the provincial capital when British Columbia joined the Canadian Confederation in 1871. Victoria was incorporated as a city in 1862. ... In 1886, with the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus on Burrard Inlet, Victoria's position as the commercial centre of British Columbia was lost to the city of Vancouver. The city subsequently began cultivating an image of genteel civility within its natural setting, an image aided by the impressions of visitors such as Rudyard Kipling, the opening of the popular Butchart Gardens in 1904 and the construction of the Empress Hotel by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1908. Amon Carter Catalogue 1867; Catalogue of the National Map Collection. SENSAI EITAKU, THE ARTIST: We summarize: "Eitaku [1843-1890] was actually Kobayashi Tokusen, and used several Go or studio names, Eitaku was the most common one. He also was known as Issensai, Sensai. Sharf mistakes his first name for Sensei, which is actually SensAi, Sensei meaning "teacher." Eitaku was a Japanese style painter, born in Edo, at 13 became a pupil of Kano Eitoku Tatsunobu. . A few years later he was employed by the Ii family, the lords of Hikone as their official painter and was given status of Samurai. In 1860 his master was assassinated, [our note]: there are famous stories about Ii Naosuke inquire with us if interested in this true tale of vendetta.] After this Eitaku became a master less Samurai and wandered throughout Japan, returning finally to Nihombashi in Edo. . He edited several textbooks on painting and also did illustrations for the then famous newspaper YOKOHAMA MAINICHI SHIMBUN. He specialized in historical subjects and figures. As Eitoku's pupil, he worked first in the Kano tradition, later he studied Nanga style. . He finally developed his own style of realistic painting." He is well collected by world museums, and cited in Mitchell. See below references. *** THE STANDARD SIZE OF THE SERIES: The size was standardized at 13.4 x 18.7 cm. for each title. *** WHO WAS B.H. CHAMBERLAIN [1850-1935]: . "He was a professor of Japanese at Tokyo Imperial University and one of the foremost British Japanologists active in Japan during the late 19th century. He also wrote some of the earliest translations of Haiku into English. He is perhaps best remembered for his informal and popular encyclopedia THINGS JAPANESE, which first appeared in 1890. . Chamberlain landed in Japan on 29 May 1873. He taught at the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy in Tokyo from 1874 to 1882. His most important position, however, was as professor of Japanese at Tokyo Imperial University beginning in 1886. It was here that he gained his reputation as a student of Japanese language and literature. He was also a pioneering scholar of the Ainu and Ryukyuan languages." . He traveled and lived Among the Ainu, the results of which were the three Ainu Fairy Tales. . "His many works include the first translation of the Kojiki into English [1882], A Handbook of Colloquial Japanese [1888], Things Japanese [1890], and A Practical Guide to the Study of Japanese Writing [1905]. He was also a keen traveler despite chronic weak health, he co-wrote with W. B. Mason, the 1891 edition of A Handbook for Travellers in Japan, of which revised editions followed." . Chamberlain was a friend of the writer Lafcadio Hearn, once a colleague at the University."
