The English Gypsy Word Book; Being George Borrow's Romany Vocabulary Transposed.

London Taylor and Francis 1889. 8vo. Printed for Private Circulation. 94pp. Bound in publisher's quarter red morocco with dark red title label to spine over yellow and black striped cloth boards (although the black is closer to dark brown pebble grained cloth). All edges are coloured to match the tricolore design.Minor edgewear and scuffing, gilt ruling to spine, a little dustiness here and there but essentially a very good, strong copy. Marbled endpapers, bearing the bookplate of John Quinn, (possibly the patron to Augustus John; who had a particular fascination with the British Romany) to front pastedown. A privately printed, rare and unusual extraction of the Romany volcabularly from the Romano Lavo-Lil and subsequent works. More a Romany vocabulary rather than a dictionary, with no detail pertaining to grammar, pronunciation or dialectical differences. It is clearly quite a deluxe production, attractively printed and, like all of Borrow's gypsy related gleanings, instantly fascinating. There will inevitably be inaccuracies, over romanticisings and downright bigotry attached to the history of British and European Roma, gypsies and travellers, but Borrow, essentially sympathetic, and certainly entranced, contributed at least some complexity and cultural depth to groups that previously were described in terms of suspicion, fear or as outcasts. It is insome ways quite ironic that the entire 19th century, with it's tremendous need for regimented progress, generally punitive reactions and strict social castes and systems, should also have been the age of the unrestrained romanticisation of the exile and the pariah; from the gothic to the pseudo-scientific, a public consciousness surrounded by the increasing vigour of the urban and industrial moved by inclination towards the deep woods and the high passes. Whilst Borrow and his contemporaries may have done as much to parody a culture as to preserve its history, it is through works like this that at least some remnants of a period voice remains.

        Navajo Woman with a Rug

1939. Painting on silk. Signed and dated lower left. 21.5 x 16.5 inches. From the biography by Michael Anderson: James Perry Wilson, known to his family and friends as Perry, was born on August 13th 1889 in Newark New Jersey. When James Perry Wilson was laid off from his architectural job in 1932, he went right to work at his passion, painting his favorite spots in Westchester and Monhegan. Of the 269 dated plein air paintings spanning from 1918 to 1974 that I have documented in private collections and in museums, 58 are from 1932-1934, the two year period before he began to work at the American Museum of Natural History. A mystery from this time is that Wilson took a class in 1932 at the Arts Student League with John Carlson. This is the only painting class to my knowledge ever taken by Wilson. He was 43 years old and had already been painting in his mature painting style for decades

SYLVIE AND BRUNO [With:] SYLVIE AND BRUNO CONCLUDED (Very Fine Set,)

London: Macmillan, 1889. Carroll, Lewis (Charles L[utwidge] Dodgson). SYLVIE AND BRUNO [With:] SYLVIE AND BRUNO CONCLUDED. London: Macmillan, 1889 & 1893. First Editions. A perfectly matched VERY FINE, fresh set. Much is made by those in commerce about having SYLVIE AND BRUNO CONCLUDED in original dust jacket, yet it surely must be one of the most common 19th century dust jackets available (at any given time, one can usually find eight or ten online). What matters here is that the 1889 SYLVIE AND BRUNO is a stunning copy to match its 1893 sequel, a truly uncommon opportunity. The author considered these books to be his magnum opus and, having worked on them for over twenty years, was quite disappointed to be met with poor sales by a Victorian public seemingly desperate for another Alice. While it may be tempting to see these first editions as ideal door stops based on their length and ubiquitous presence in rare book catalogues, they are genuinely worthy of any decent Lewis Carroll collection and, in this condition, hopefully irresistible! Housed in an especially nice double slipcase.. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. VERY FINE. Illus. by Harry Furniss.

Photo Album]: Canary Islands, Madeira, Bermuda, and the Caribbean

Various 1889 - Large folio. Half leather ruled in gilt and paper covered boards. Boards stained and rubbed, internal foxing, some fading to some images but overall very good. 114 mostly larger albumen prints, mounted on card leaves (between one and four to a page; usually two), and numbered on the leaves below the image (the album is numbered to 120, with space left for the other six images, but those spaces are unnumbered and with no evidence that the images were ever mounted in the volume). Image sizes range mostly between 4" x 6" and 9" x 12". A fair number of the images have captions in the image, many others are captioned in ink on the mount. A wonderful album that begins in Portugal with nine images of the Coast of Funchal in Madeira (harbor views, various images of the public gardens, "bullock cart," and two men bearing a woman lying in a hammock), nine of Tenerife in the Canary Islands (La Laguna, Mount Teide, harbor views with ships, massive dragon tree,), and the Azores (two photos creating a panorama of the Ponta Delgada harbor, Church of St. Sebastian, hot springs, baths at Furnas); and then extends to several islands in the West Indies including 23 of Trinidad (Port of Spain, dock views, ice house, botanical gardens, date palms, government house, water works, and pitch lakes), 21 of Bermuda ("Devil's Hole" on the north coast, Mullet Bay in Tucker's Town, lily fields, stone quarry, floating dock, Princess Hotel), 17 of Jamaica (Kingston Harbor, Kingston street scenes, fruit sellers, barracks at Newcastle, Hamilton sugar workers), nine of Barbados (Bridgetown, cabbage palms, arrowroot mills, "Negroes Houses," sugar cane harvesting, collection and processing), four of Cuba (Havana, taxi driver, policeman, tobacco plantation), three each of the Bahamas ("convicts at work," sponge shipping), St. Lucia (harbor), two of St. Thomas (sailing ships), one of Martinique (harbor), and concluding with three of the harbor in Plymouth, England (lighthouse and sound). Near the end are also a group of portraits, possibly commercial images, of native islanders captioned below: "Negress," "Mulatto," Quadroon," "Native with 'Fer de lance [snake],'" and "Women wearing Capote."Of the 114 photographs only about a dozen can be credited. Seven of the images from Tenerife are marked in the negative "J.H.T.E." While little is could be found about J.H.T.E., our research did turned up an auction record for an album sold in the late '90s containing several of his images of Gran Canaria, and as well as a letter credited to the same initials in a 1876 issue of *The British Journal of Photography* asking about transporting dry photographic plates over long distances. The other photographer that can be identified is Jacob Frank Coonley, a sign painter turned photography from New York who, with partner George Bernard, worked for Matthew Brady for several years during the Civil War. Following the conflict he worked photographing railroad construction in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia for the military, then in 1880 he worked with theatrical portraitist J.M. Moran, before relocating to Nassau in the Bahamas in 1889. While only three photographs are credited to "J.F. Coonley," we suspect three additional images of nearby Cuba might also be his workAn exceptional album of photographs. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
