The Mate of the Day Light (Association Copy)

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1884. First edition. Inscribed on the front fly leaf: "Lily Fairchild, With love from Sarah O. Jewett, 21 November 1883." Original publisher's brown and green cloth binding; minor shelf wear to head and crown of spine; small bumps to corners; small mark to back cover. Small tear to rear joint but text block fully attached and tight. Internally unmarked and clean. Near Fine Condition. A rare copy of Jewett's short story collection, which she wrote and published in the early years of her relationship with Annie Fields. Jewett and Fields' life together was notably enriched by the creative and intellectually engaging circle of women with whom they surrounded themselves. Among these were Sally Fairchild and her mother, the famed poet and novelist Lily Fairchild (nom de plume C. A. Price) who oversaw an artistic salon in Boston. It is to Lily that Jewett inscribed this copy, presenting it before the book's official release in 1884. The Mate of the Daylight received contemporary acclaim for its vivid representation of New Englanders' lives. "Besides the pretty idyl which gives the title, there are other two of her best pieces, delineating country ways and character, the men and women who figure in them being so true to life that one can almost point out their like in any rural neighborhood. Could anything be more real than the incidents and human nature in these?" (Literary World). Jewett's correspondence with Sally and Lily Fairchild has been documented and preserved by Coe College.

Poetical Drifts of Thought; or, Problems of Progress

Detroit: Lyman E. Stowe, 1884. First Edition. Hardcover. A singularly eccentric work of American 19th-century imaginative writing, combining aspects of utopian literature, futurology, freethought, Swedenborgianism, Darwinism, and social engineering. Stowe's primary medium is verse, but the writing is in places sufficiently discursive that scansion seems but an afterthought. Among Stowe's many visionary conceptions are air travel; television ("Seeing Distant Friends by Electricity's Aid"); control of global weather patterns; and the replacement of solid foods with "nutritive gasses." Our choice to classify the work as essentially a work of utopian literature is based on the extended prose-and-verse entry "Sketches of the City of the Straits," which presents a decidedly utopian view of Detroit in the year 2100, including a glass dome "20 miles square" covering the entire city. The entire volume is profusely illustrated with a combination of stock woodcuts and the author's own rustic sketches, including a three-panel folding panorama of the Detroit waterfront viewed from Windsor, Ontario. Not in Sargent or Negley, despite obvious utopian elements. OCLC notes 20 holdings (about half in Michigan), but quite scarce in commerce. Tall octavo (24cm). Publisher's green beveled, pictorial cloth boards, blocked in gilt and blind on spine and covers; 319pp; illus. A bright, Fine copy, exceptionally well-preserved.

Chinese Music. Published by Order of The Inspector General of Customs. China. Imperial Maritime Customs. II. Special Series: No. 6

Shanghai: Published at the Statistical Department of the Inspectorate General of Customs, 1884. First edition. Hardcover. Very good overall. Scarce first edition of the primary source in a Western language of information on Chinese music right up to the 1950s. 'Chinese Music' is also recognized as a direct source of musical material and information for Puccini in his writing of the opera 'Turandot'. Van Aalst explains, "In the description I give here I will endeavour to point out the contrasts or similarity between Western and Chinese Music, to present abstruse theories in the least tiresome way, to add details never before published, and to give a short yet concise account of Chinese Music" (Preface, iii). J. A. van Aalst (1858 - ca.1914) was a Belgian customs and postal officer in China, recognized for his works on the history of Chinese music and dance. He served in China in the late 19th century as an administrator for the Qing Dynasty imperial government, in the Imperial Maritime Customs Service. While employed in this primarily British staffed department his ability as a musician was recognized by the highly able British Inspector General of the customs service, Robert Hart. The customs service did much more than collect revenue; it also researched and produced reports and publications on numerous China related topics including music. This is van Aalst's most famous work, published in 1884 in Shanghai by the Statistical Dept of the Inspectorate General. Van Aalst was invited to lecture at the 1884 London International Health Exhibition. It is likely 'Chinese Music' was written in preparation for the exposition, where a small group of Chinese musicians was invited to perform. It included participants and exhibits from around the world including from China -- which displayed the first ever Chinese menu seen in Great Britain! 4to, iv, 84pp, many illustrations in text. Unfortunately this copy LACKS the frontispiece and 2 plates. Three quarter black calf and marbled boards. Corners and spine ends slightly rubbed. OCLC: 233003645. Rare in the trade.

Quads within Quads: Quads for Authors, Editors, & Devils

London: Field & Tuer; Simpkin; Hamilton, 1884. 146, (16)pp. Comprises the miniature version of Quads for Authors, Editors, & Devils as well as the "enlarged edition." A book of jokes relating to printers, with a sixteen-page glossary. Quads, explains the preface, are "little metal blanks used by the printer for filling up gaps, and are not of much account, although we cannot get along without them." The miniature copy is housed in a compartment scooped out of blank leaves at the end of the enlarged edition -- a 12mo., 94-page version of the book, with expanded text that contains additional stories and bon mots about the printing profession. This version is done in numerous typefaces and illustrated with amusing wood engravings. According to the prospectus, which is tipped in on the front endleaf, Quads within Quads was "likely in future ages to rank high amongst the treasures of the book-collector... As a mere curiosity, irrespective of its extremely amusing character, [it] is a covetable book." Both versions bound in gilt-lettered vellum, and miniature has gold ribbon ties intact. Fine, with only minor soiling to vellum and slight warp to boards. Covetable, indeed. (Bondy, p. 149; Bromer/Edison, p. 186; Welsh 6857). (1 5/8 by 1 1/16; 41x26mm).

Der Ursprung der Familie, des Privateigenthums und des Staats.

Hottingen-Zürich, Schweizerische Genossenschaftsdruckerei, 1884. - VI, (7)-146, (2) SS. Zeitgenössischer Leinenband mit Resten eines Rückenschildchens. 8vo. Stammhammer I, 73, 20. Marx-Engels Erstdrucke 45f. (mit Abb.).         OUR BASE BALL CLUB and How It Won the Championship

1884. With an Introduction by Al. G. Spalding of the Chicago Base Ball Club. New York: E. P. Dutton and Company, 1884. 1 page undated ads (for Spalding baseball goods). Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, beveled. First Edition of "the first novel devoted exclusively to baseball" [Grobani 12-2c]. The first book about baseball was 1859's THE BASE BALL PLAYER'S POCKET COMPANION (nonfiction -- there are only about ten known copies, the most recently-exchanged of which was priced at $39,500). There was an 1877 volume in the "No Name Series," THE GREAT MATCH, which could also lay claim to "first baseball fiction" but which is not entirely about baseball. About these two books Strecker et al. have written,~Both THE GREAT MATCH and OUR BASE BALL CLUB highlight tensions between the country and the city. More importantly, they reveal the baseball team's central place in local communities and feature insight into nineteenth century baseball debates about participation versus competition, and amateurism versus professionalism.~This is a hefty, large-format (quarto) volume, with ten handsome illustrations. OUR BASE BALL CLUB was issued in two different bindings -- paper-covered boards with a front cover lithograph, or full pictorially-decorated cloth, either grey or blue or (as here) bright red. This is a bright, very good-plus copy, with a small damp-mark on the rear cover and very minor shelf-wear at the spine ends.

Flatland A Romance of Many Dimensions

London: Seeley & Co.,, 1884. With Illustrations by the Author. Octavo. Original wrappers enclosed in a vellum jacket printed with titles and illustration in black. Illustrated throughout by the author. Manuscript titles added to spine. Vellum jacket shipped at the ends, wrappers a little marked, some splitting to front joint, spotting to ends and endpapers and a little within, an excellent example of this fragile book. First edition of this cult classic, a mathematical fantasia describing a society of two-dimensional geometrical shapes, the denizens of Flatland, authored by "A Square" (pseudonym of English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott.) and dedicated "To The Inhabitants of Space in General... by a Humble Native of Flatland In the Hope that Even as he was Initiated into the Mysteries of Three Dimensions Having been previous conversant with ONLY TWO So the Citizens of that Celestial Region May aspire yet higher and higher To the Secrets of FOUR FIVE OR EVEN SIX Dimensions Thereby contributing To the Enlargement of The Imagination". A revised edition was printed in the same year, but this is the first. In the 1920s, after Einstein's publication of the general theory of relativity and its suggestion of a fourth dimension, it was acknowledged that Abbott's Flatland "at the time of its publication... did not attract as much attention as it deserved" (William Garnett, "Letter to the Editor", Nature 12 February 1920) for its imaginative yet scientific engagement with idea of further dimensions. It has also been the inspiration for several stories and films.
