      - This is the most complex, extensive, and richly illustrated series of manuscripts on the techniques of the manufacture of silk and other textiles I have encountered (and over the last 39 years I have had many). There are 285 fabric samples tipped-in along with 179 hand-colored paper diagrams. The text is richly illustrated as well with highly and minutely detailed colored diagrams throughout. Lyons has been a textile and silk center for many centuries; in the 19th century, a large proportion of the city's population was engaged in one aspect of the textile trade or another. The École Municipale de Tissage et de Broderie was established in 1883 to offer organized instruction and training for silk workers in both the theory of weaving and the actual operation and maintenance of the machines. The Poulats, father and son, were instructors at the school and these are their highly detailed manuscript guides to weaving, kept in manuscript to preserve their secret proprietary information. What is so extraordinary about these manuscripts are the detailed instructions given for the seemingly infinite variety of structures of cloth and its ornamentation by weaving has been worked out by the Poulats on squared paper and pasted in as well as depicted in the main body of the texts. We name but a few of the fabrics depicted and analyzed: satins, sateens, brocades, backed and reversible fabrics, compound cloths, piled fabrics including chenille and velveteen, and crossed weaving. The first volume, by Emile Poulat (and numbered on the spine "III") begins with a detailed account of the art of sericulture from incubation to the cocoons and their preparation for reeling. The processing of washing and reeling is shown in the fine full-page drawing. There are several other illustrations of machinery used to prepare the silk. Wild silks are also considered. There are hundreds of diagrams of increasing complexity depicting the warp and weft designs to achieve different effects in the silk fabrics. Part II contains descriptions and diagrams along with actual silk fabric samples pasted-in for many kinds of fabrics: taffetas, satins, velours, "pékin," etc., etc. For each of the hundreds of fabrics, there is a detailed account of the materials required, techniques of weaving, etc. The final section describes the weaving machinery employed in Lyon, with numerous fine close-up drawings of various sections of the looms. There are sections on dyeing and bleaching. Vols. II (numbered "I") and III (numbered "II") again show further - nearly endless -variations in textile design and the technical requirements, with many fabric samples pasted-in. In fine condition.          Life on the Mississippi

Boston: James R. Osgood, 1883 FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, in the original deluxe binding. The first state has the illustration of Twain's head and urn in flames at page 441 and the "St. Louis" caption on p. 443. Twain's wife Livy had objected that the illustration, which came at the end of a chapter on cremation, was "morbid." In the second state the illustration is lacking. This is a very appealing copy of Twain's autobiographical narrative of his days as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River. BAL 3411. Original three-quarter calf gilt, deluxe publisher's binding. Minimal wear. A fine copy.

Leipzig Breitkopf & Härtel 1883 - (22 x 15 cm). X, 245 S. Broschur mit altem Material, unbeschnitten. Erste Ausgabe. - "The significance of atomic weights in the demonstration of chemical periodicity, and the suspicion that some atomic weights were not accurate, led Meyer and Seubert to examine critically and to recalculate all atomic weights then considered important. Their study was published in 1883. All atomic weights were referred to the standard of unity for the atomic weight of hydrogen, a standard that Meyer championed. In 1903 the newly created International Commission of Atomic Weights decided to publish parallel tables based on H=1 and O=16, a practice followed for many years" (DSB). - Einband etwas fleckig, sonst wohlerhalten. - DSB 9, 347 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

         La Poupée . exemplaire unique.

Imprimerie de "l'Illustration",, Paris 1883 - First edition: A children's story written for the author's daughter and her doll: 'Exemplaire unique', but actually one of two recorded copies (the other in the Bibliothèque nationale). Pailleron was a prolific and successful literary figure in Paris, as co-director of the Revue des Deux mondes and author of many plays. The Bibliothèque nationale copy contains an inscription permitting the recipient (presumably the printer or editor) to print one more copy only (presumably this one). Several later editions followed, but we can find no more examples of the first. Young Marie-Louise Pailleron appears (with her brother) as the co-subject in John Singer Sargent's first dual portrait, painted in 1880 (she later recorded that she made no less than 83 sittings for it). Large quarto (320 × 242 mm), pp. 11, [3], engraved title vignette and illustrations. Paper slightly cockled throughout, title lightly duststained. Slightly later limp calf, gilt. Rubbed. After studying under Giuseppe Hyzler, Perziosi subsequently completed his art education at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. He moved to Constantinople in 1842, fell in love with the city, and was able to make a living painting the places and people that surrounded him. It is noted in the Atabey catalogue that "Preziosi was well-known .... His studio is mentioned in Murray's guidebooks for 1854 and 1871. By that time he had become an institution in the city... He produced views of the city, and genre and costume drawings" ( The Ottoman World p.535).His paintings sold well to both the affluent local and the Grand Tourist, and his reputation was such that also served as a court painter to Sultan Abdul Hamid II.With his published work, Preziosi was offered the opportunity to share his love of his adopted home city with a wider public: he here offers a catalogue of daily life in the city; an aide-memoire and a momento. The work offers a real cross-section of humanity, ranging from a street performance by a family of gypsies and their bear, to street vendors, to established shopkeepers of various kinds, to military and religious figures, to high-class Turkish ladies, to a powerful eunuch of the Sultan's seraglio. But behind the main figures, can be glimpsed locations and small incidents that are what gives the city its unique quality: from the Süleymaniye Mosque to the Bosphorus, from the shops in the alley-ways, the coffee houses, to the courtyard of the sultan.First published in 1858, the present re-issue, limited to 500 numbered copies, was published under the direction of the Encyclopédie des Arts Décoratifs de L'Orient.Colas 2423; Blackmer 1353 (1865 edition); Atabey 999 (1861 edition).
