Twain, Mark
1883. [first issue, and gilt-edged] With More Than 300 Illustrations. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883. Original brown cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, all edges gilt. First American Edition, published five days after Chatto & Windus's London edition. LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI is really two books combined. The first twenty-one chapters are his early impressions of the great river., written [and serialized] in 1875 [and] here reprinted, with the balance of the book, chapter twenty-two to the end, being his [new] story of his trip down the river as an honored guest [Johnson]. This copy is of the first issue (which in our experience is less common than the second): the illustration of "Twain in flames" is present at the end of his discourse on cremation on p. 441 (it is absent in later copies, because Twain's wife objected to the illustration!); and the incorrect caption "The St. Louis Hotel" (rather than the proper "The St. Charles Hotel") appears on p. 443. Furthermore this copy is in the preferred binding state, with all edges of the leaves gilded: as the title page indicates, this book was "sold by subscription only" -- and not many buyers chose this extra-cost option. In our experience, only about one of every twenty copies encountered has gilt page edges. This is an unusually bright copy, with scarcely any of the usual erosion of the binding gilt. It is in just-about-fine condition (the slightest of wear at the spine ends). Blanck 3411; Johnson pp 41-43. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Grasset, Eugene.
Paris: H. Launette, 1883. Later three-quarter red morocco and marbled boards by Sanford with gilt emblems on spine. Original color wrappers bound in. 239pp. First regular edition after the limited edition of 200. With chromolithographs by Grasset printed by Charles Gillot. A history of the four sons of Count Aymon during the time of Charlemagne. It was designed and illustrated by the Swiss-born Grasset and took him over two years to complete over the 200 individualized page designs. This was the first photoengraved book in color. Ray called it "a turning point in the history of illustrated books" that "became an inexhaustible source for other artists as Art Nouveau became the dominant style of the period" (Ray "Art of the French Illustrated Book"). The very attractive binding is in very good shape with some light scuffing to the cover edges and some light wear to the spine hinges which are quite firm. The original wrappers have some soiling. The text is very good with some light soiling and wear. Foreign postage extra on this 5 pound book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Poitevin, Alphonse
Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1883. Second edition. 8vo., xiv, 280 pp., errata, phototypie portrait frontispiece with tissue guard. Quarter cloth and marbled paper over boards, titled in gilt on the spine. Occasional light foxing, board and spine edges lightly rubbed; else very good. Alphonse Louis Poitevin (1819 - 1882) was trained as a chemical engineer. After the early discoveries of Daguerre and Talbot, he became interested in photography, experimenting with daguerreotype plates for the production of printing plates. His experiments led to the method of photomechanical engraving on silver or gold coated metal plates. His experiments with the action of light on bichromated gelatin were the bases for carbon printing and photolithography. His contributions to the development of photomechanical processes made him one of the outstanding inventors of the nineteenth century. Vidal experimented with carbon processes and chromolithography during the period that this book was published, and in 1877, he invented a process for photographing in natural colors. This is the second edition of Poitevin's 1862 work with a similar title. In this current edition, Léon Vidal has made corrections to the text and has added an appendix to each chapter, bringing up to date the advances that others had made to Poitevin's process. Roosens and Salu No. 8164. OCLC locates only eight copies; none in North America.

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1883. 1883 Darwin Origin of Species Descent of Man Evolution APES Monkeys Science RARE"One general law, leading to the advancement of all organic beings, namely, multiply, vary, let the strongest live and the weakest die."― Charles Darwin, The Origin of SpeciesA rare edition of Charles Darwin's 'Descent of Man,' and first American edition of Charles Darwin's 'Origin of Species' - one of the most important scientific books ever written. 'Descent of Man' is the work in which Darwin's theories of evolution by means of natural selection were realized. Before this book, Darwin applied his thoughts to animals and plants but had not yet decided they also could be realized in Homo sapiens. In fact, the world 'evolution' had not appeared in any Darwinian work prior to 'Descent of Man.' Many of Darwin's theories that were prevalent in 'Descent' have been misconstrued and misinterpreted - most notably that humans descended from apes. Darwin never said humans came from apes or monkeys. Darwin's actually said that "human ancestors, if alive today, would have to be classified among the Primates." (De Beer).'Origin of Species,' originally written in 1859, helped lay the foundation for many of the theories of evolution that would shape thinking for the next century. According to Glick,"'Origin of Species' greatest impact on German biological practice lay in the introduction of historical modes of explanation for the observable phenomena of living nature. The historical approach to nature was rejected, not only by the opponents of evolution, but also by th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Good. This in a genuine Antique, Original 1883 copy of . . . THE WINE PRESS AND THE CELLAR: A Manual for the Wine-Maker and the Cellar-Man by Emmet Hawkins Rixford Payot, Upham & Co. and D. Van Nostrand, San Francisco and NY, 1883 Hardcover, 240 pages, 8 by 5-1/2 inches Fancier 1st editions of this book are available for $2,000; This appears to be the 'plain-Jane' binding for workin' folks. It's the same size and published by the same publisher in the same year - and still very rare and very cool. Rixford's book is considered culturally important, as the first California imprint devoted solely to wine making rather than grape growing. The name of a prior owner is written in pencil on the back inside-cover page: "Arthur A Barricks, Eastern & Foreigh Sales Manger, California Wine Assn., San Francisco, California" The book is in Good antique condition - complete, totally readable, and unmarked (except for prior owner's name and title) with overall tanning, occasional smudges, a few light stains, and a rare small tear. The book has an an intact sewn binding, except the copyright page is trying to escape and is a bit fragile (see next to last photo). The textured cloth cover shows some stains and wear - and fading from what may have been an original dark green. With us, you will always see several photos of the actual item you will receive! Hi, This lot is an 1883 Rebound Wisden , with the original covers bound within. This is the 20th edition and the the range of the harder to get years in Original form. This book is in Good to Very Good Condition The boards are in Brown with gilt to the spine and also Gerald Brodribb to the front. The covers are very nice and tall, there is some darkness to the front cover and a small loss to the corner, the rear cover is not as good as it is worn with loss to the edges. The final couple of pages have small losses to the corners. No trimming to report, these are very tall books. There is some foxing to the first and last couple of pages but after that the pages are nice clean white pages.

Twain, Mark [Samuel L. Clemens]
Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883. First American edition. Very Good +. First State, with the image of Twain in flames on p. 441 and with "The St. Louis Hotel" caption on p. 443. In the original publisher's brown cloth with gilt vignettes on the front board and spine. A solid VG+ copy with some slight spotting to the front board and bumps to spine extremities. Gift inscription to front pastedown, and ownership signature and bookplate of Emma Hutchinson to pastedown and front endpaper; mild offsetting to upper corner of endpaper. The author's first-hand look at navigating the Mississippi by riverboat and the changes to that area many years after the Civil War. Written concurrently with Huckleberry Finn and sharing several themes and even a few passages with that masterpiece. "The material offered by observations on the journey is various beyond enumeration, and much of it is extremely amusing. Hoaxes and exaggerations palmed off by pilots and other natives along the way upon supposed ignorant strangers; stories of gamblers and obsolete robbers; glimpses of character and manners; descriptions of scenery and places; statistics of trade; Indian legends; extracts from the comments of foreign travelers, -- all these occur, interspersed with two or three stories of either humorous or tragic import, or of both together" (The Atlantic Monthly, September 1883). Very Good +.

[Old Guard State Fencibles]
Philadelphia, 1883. Very good.. Vol. I, Nos. 1-13. Each issue 8pp. Large folio. Loose issues stitched together at an early date. Light wear and soiling to outer leaves, heaviest to first leaf. Daily newspaper published by the Old Guard State Fencibles of Philadelphia during the Fair of the Infantry Battalion held at Industrial Hall in Philadelphia in November 1883. The State Fencibles were a Philadelphia militia unit founded in 1813 and disbanded in 1900 with the advent of the National Guard. The fair for which this paper was issued was a gala bazaar fundraiser which lasted two weeks and drew over 10,000 visitors on the opening evening. The content is comprised primarily of advertising, with a few pieces on members of the unit and goings-on around the fair. Notably, the first page of each issue features a woodcut portrait of one of the members. We find no copies of this periodical in OCLC, and presume it was issued in a small number for members of the battalion. It was clearly a souvenir of the event, and has been saved here as such.

[Attributes: First Edition]
