Cowden, Robert
Dayton. Oh.: United Brethren Publishing House, 1883. 293pp. Original blue cloth stamped in gilt and blind. Soiling and edge wear to cloth, spine ends and corners worn. Front free endpaper excised, rear hinge starting. Occasional spotting to text. Good plus. A rare regimental history of the exploits of an African-American Civil War unit, composed largely of freedmen from Tennessee and commanded by officers mainly from Ohio. Initially, the name of the regiment was the First Tennessee Infantry (African Descent), but was changed to the 59th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry in March 1864. The regiment saw most of their action in the Volunteer State, often against Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate forces. Cowden's work is comprised of a history of the war from the first ordinance of secession through the muster-out of the regiment. The history covers the organization of the regiment, their early drills, their move to Memphis, their part in the disastrous Battle of Brice's Cross Roads (also known as the Guntown Disaster), and their participation in the battles at Pontotoc, Tupelo, and Harrisburg. Luckily for them, the 59th USCT were not present at the Battle of Fort Pillow. The unit's history is followed by short biographical sketches of the white officers of the regiment, along with some of their post-war correspondence. The author, Colonel Robert Cowden, achieved great success in organizing the Fifty-Ninth Regiment. He also commanded the troops assigned to capture John Wilkes Booth, and later testified at the trial of the surviving Lincoln assassination conspira … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sherman, Edwin A., compiler & translator
[Oakland, Ca, 1883. 320,11pp. Form mounted to front pastedown. Contemporary blindstamped pebbled cloth, title stamped in gilt on front board. Wear to extremities, small chip to head of spine. Small ink annotation on titlepage, a few small tears to edges of leaves due to rough opening (no text affected), a few leaves dog- eared. Very good overall. A rare and curious anti-Catholic work, attacking the Jesuits ("this Society of Thugs") and the machinations of the Pope, and accusing the Catholic conspiracy of being behind the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Sherman contends that while an attorney in Illinois, Lincoln told an off-color joke about a group of French priests in a courtroom during one of his trials (the story is recounted on pages 136-39). As a result, Sherman writes, "the priests were terribly offended, and their eyes showed a malignity of intention of revenge to be gratified in the future which their tongues dared not utter." The titlepage notes that this work was "sold by Private Subscription only, and under Stipulated Conditions." Accordingly, affixed to the front pastedown of this copy is a partially printed form, completed in manuscript. Numbered 723, it contains an oath, signed in manuscript by Thomas Calvin Hyde of Baker City, Oregon and dated 1894, by which Hyde pledges not to loan or even show this book to anyone. Hyde's obituary describes him as "one of the foremost attorneys of Eastern Oregon" (DALLES TIMES- MOUNTAINEER, November 21, 1896). The eleven-page gathering following the main text details the instances in which sex is a mortal sin, excerpted fr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Swinburne, Algernon Charles
London, 1883. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Very good +/very good +. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing in a Very Good + copy of the EXCEEDINGLY RARE DUST JACKET (being the oldest Chatto and Windus dust jacket available on the market as of the time of this listing). The volume shows some bubbling to the cloth as well as some rubbing to the board corners and the dust jacket shows some variation in colour relatively modest wear and tear, and a vertical fold to the rear flap, as well as a few quite small stains. The book contains a group of Roundels, a form of Poetry created by Swinburne and which he described as "...wrought as a ring or a starbright sphere, With craft of delight and with cunning of sound unsought." As an undergraduate at Balliol College, Oxford, during the late 1850s Swinburne came under the influence of a French revival of medieval poemes a forme fixe (i.e. poems in a fixed form), such as the ballade, rondeau, rondel, and triolet. These forms in had been established by Poets such as Duke Charles d'Orleans and Francois Villon. Swinburne and others (such as Austin Dobson, Edward Dowden, W. H. Henley, Andrew Lang, and R. L. Stevenson) had, by the 1870s, popularized these medieval French fixed forms in England. Swinburne reworked Villon's rondeau to invent his "roundel" publishing "A Century of Roundels" in 1883. A Roundel is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as: "an English modified rondeau", by Collins Dictionary as: "a form of rondeau consisting of three stanzas each of three lines with a refrain after the fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Crawhall, Joseph
London: Field & Tuer. [et al.], 1883. Very good.. Limited first edition of this idiosyncratic collection of re-designed chapbooks, based upon the collection of chapbook-collector Joseph Crawhall - his own copy, inscribed to him by the publisher. Crawhall's vision belongs in the same philosophy of William Morris's Kelmscott Press and others in looking to past styles of book production for inspiration as a reaction to industrialization - but with vastly different results. Simon Houfe observes that "Crawhall enjoyed the spirit of book making and began to assemble material from various sources, writing, illustrating and putting the book together himself [...] Crawhall attempted to bring back the personality to books, dead since industrialization."This book contains 8 chapbooks, each approximately 30 pages, with separate covers and pagination and printed on various colored rough textured papers. Illustrated by Crawhall with his wonderful and characteristic boldly outlined woodcuts, hand colored. The limitation statement notes: "As the illustrations herein are all hand colored the issue is necessarily limited - Joseph Crawhall." An excellent association copy, especially of interest to those who collect on the topic of book collecting itself.

John Wisden
Hi, This lot is a 1883 Rebound with Covers Wisden, in good or better condition, the main thing to note is that the front cover has some loss to the edge and the corner but the price easily reflects this. Internally it is very clean inside with nice pages, it is bound very tidily in brown with gilt to the spine. Odd mark to the rear cover and light line. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
