Sketches for A.H. from S.T.S. [Album of Comical Pen-and-Ink Sketches Mostly (23 ink drawings, one pencil, and one photo)]

Half Morocco. Marbled paper pastedown on boards. . Very Good. Sketches that effortlessly transport us back to Victoria England as experienced by the upper classes. N.d., circa 1870s to 1880s. Folio, 36 by 27.5 cm. The drawings were dedicated to Anna Hill, who herself was the subject of many of them, beginning with the title page illustration which depicts her in Egypt reading a letter from home. This title page reveals instantly the cleverness of the artist's conception as well as his proficiency in executing his artistic vision. A contemplative Anna is in the center, surrounded by vignettes of ancient Egypt that somehow are of one piece but also distinct from one another and interspersed with the title lettering. Hovering above, as in a cloud, is a picture of a High Head Castle, Anna's home in Cumberland (Cumbria). Thanks to a penciled caption beneath this mounted title illustration, we also know some of the details of the Hill family. The illustrations that follow are almost all comical, some broadly so, others, more subtly, some relying entirely on the visual depiction, while others derive their humor in part from a caption. One can easily imagine almost any of these illustrations as coming from "Punch" or another satirical magazine. In "A nice set (?) of audience", a man is reciting something to a small party of women and one older man. One of the woman is listening with a large horn hearing aid, while another is fast asleep. The others are completely ignoring the speaker as the older man endeavors to flirt with them. We especially like an illustration of a woman frightened by a headless scarecrow who appears to be pointing a handgun in her direction. Or another, showing "an interruption in an afternoon billiard party", which has the middle aged and older men staring out the window as two comely young women are playing on a swing, one of whom appears quite cognizant of the effect she is having on the men. Other subjects include a wedding, a flooded basement, the hiring of a cook and a maid, a lady on a high wheeled early bicycle, a knight and a barbarian with a club, etc. One can only fully appreciate the quality and fun of the illustrations by actually beholding them. The photo is of "the George Inn", with a horse and card waiting outside, and the final sketch is of a lady with a parasol reading a letter. This illustrations is dated June 2, 1881. Thayer Smith was the godfather to the Hills Family of High Head Castle, Cumberland, in England -- the castle was destroyed by fire in the 1950s. One of the children for whom this story was prepared, John Waller Hills (1867-1938) was a British Liberal MP from 1906 until his death and was due to be conferred a baronetcy but died prior. Scattered light soiling of the card stock onto which the drawings are mounted. Rubbing and wear to the morocco and edgewear to the boards.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Halle, 4. I. 1881. - 2 SS. 8vo. "Hochverehrter Herr Hofrath!

Conservati in legatura coeva in mezza pelle e percallina

Ottimo esemplare.

        BALLADS ABOUT AUTHORS

Boston: D. Lothrop Company, 1881. Hardcover. Very good. Illustrations by Edmund H. Garrett. Boston: D. Lothrop Company, 1887. First edition. Tipped-in on a prefatory blank leaf is a three-page holographic poem (?Pope?s Mother at Twickenham?) by Spofford, signed by her below the final stanza. This poem first appeared in the August 1891 issue of Wide Awake. A collection of poetic homages to Oliver Goldsmith, Samuel Johnson, John Milton, William Shakespeare, and others by the New England writer best known for her gothic romances, which were set apart by luxuriant descriptions and an unconventional handling of female stereotypes of the era. Her reputation began when the Atlantic Monthly published ?In the Cellar? (February 1859), a tale of Parisian life. Published anonymously, her first novel, Sir Rohan?s Ghost (1860), in the tradition of Poe, is the story of a man who tries to kill his mistress and is later plagued by her daughter, with whom he falls in love. The many works that followed often featured female leads and attracted the attention of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Rose Terry Cooke, Mary Wilkins Freeman, and William Dean Howells, among others. When asked whether she read Spofford?s work, Emily Dickinson responded, ?I read Miss Prescott?s ?Circumstance,? but it followed me in the dark, so I avoided her.? Later, following her marriage to the poet Richard S. Spofford, Jr., she expanded her repertoire to include poetry, essays, and travel writing. Some of her many literary friendships in New England are recalled in A Little Book of Friends (1916). Octavo. Original brown cloth binding, with decorative gilt and green stamping. The spine is darkened just a touch, with some wear to the corners and tips; else very good. BAL 18486.

        Ichi Ban

[San Francisco]: Bancroft Litho, 1881. Handbill. Very Good. Wonderful 8.5" x 11" double-sided, multi-color advertising handbill for Ichi Ban, the first "Exposition of the Arts and Manufactures of the Japanese Empire." The recto includes descriptive text about the commercial venture along with three vignettes showing an imperial procession culminating at the imperial palace. The verso contains additional text about the venture along with three b/w anthropomorphic illustrations by Japanese artists: one showing a monkey teaching a fox to play the shamisen, one showing rats conducting a tea ceremony, and one showing frog preparing a pattern drawing for two embroiderers. Bright color. Light marginal wear including a 1" hard-to-see closed tear. Faint quarter-folds. Ichi Ban, Japanese for No. 1, was the first commercial importer of Japanese goods in the United States. It opened in the summer of 1881, filling most of a block on Geary Street in San Francisco. It's exhibitions of goods were "universally conceded to be the most beautiful displays . . . in the United States-in fact the world. One of the most interesting features . . . is thirty Japanese artists, embroiderers and other artisans, dressed in their native costumes and working after the methods used in Japan . . . in view of all visitors . . . who are welcome to inspect and investigate every article. . . . No one is expected to purchase anything, . . . still all pieces are marked at their values and purchasable," both retail and wholesale. (Marquis Handbook of Chicago, 1885, p. 301.) Ichi Ban was the brainchild of Horace Fletcher, who at various times was a whaler, merchant seaman, commander of a Chinese pirate lorcha, champion marksman, military instructor to the Japanese Army and Navy, boxing promoter, Lieutenant Colonel in the California National Guard, importer, multi-millionaire, amateur painter, diet and health expert, owner of a Venetian palazzo, and friend of Henry James and Mark Twain. (Business Philosopher, Volume 4. January, 1908) Exceptionally scarce. As of 2016, no copies in the trade and no auction records listed at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub.         To Caubul with the Cavalry Brigade. A Narrative of Personal Experiences with the Force under General Sir F.S. Roberts, G.C.B. with Map and Illustrations from Sketches by the Author.

London: W.H. Allen & Co., 1881 - Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to spine, quotation from Henry IV to the front board within double-ruled panel in black with foliate scrolled decoration, repeated in blind on the rear board, pale yellow surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed, some bubbling on the boards, spine a touch sunned, and crumpled and chipped head and tail, binding cracked between gatherings 8 and 9, but the stitching remains entirely sound, light browning, and scatter of foxing to the text-block, overall very good. Lithographic frontispiece and five other similar plates, folding lithographic map at the rear. Second edition, same year as the first. Uncommon account of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Mitford "served with the [14th Regt. Bengal Cavalry (Lancers)] throughout the period it was employed in the war, taking part in the advance on and occupation of Kabul, the action of Charasiab, and the operations around Kabul and the Defence of Sherpur in Dec., 1879, and was mentioned in despatches. [he] commanded the Regiment in the first campaign, and for his services received the Brevet of Lt.-Colonel" (Shadbolt The Afghan Campaigns). Mitford provides excellent detail on the campaign, and writes extremely persuasively, for example on the death of Cavagnari; "They received [him] with a salute of nineteen guns, and after a considerable time spent in compliments, and the inevitable feast the British envoy and his followers were handed over to their new escort, and - to death. When I said good-bye to Cavagnari he was evidently in very low spirits, and I feel sure that nothing but the indomitable courage and determination which was so striking a feature in his character enabled him to conquer the foreboding of evil which he acknowledged he felt, in spite of all efforts to shake it off" (author's introduction). Front endpapers with the bookplate and ownership inscription, dated in 1893, of Sir Lewis Michell, Cape Town banker, "close confidant" of Cecil Rhodes, on his death his executor, and in 1910 his first biographer. Not in Bruce.

Homoeopathic Physician's Commonplace Scrapbook and Ledger

Philadelphia, Ann Arbor, Owatonna, and Detroit, 1881. Scrapbook. Good to Very Good. The album measures 6" x 15.5" and contains approximately 75 pages filled with ledger entries, scores of mostly medically related newspaper clippings, and about 35 ephemeral pieces including business cards, advertisements, printed letters, receipts, prescription blanks, dunning notices, medical society notices, reference book announcements, journal indexes, etc. The original spine has perished and been replace with what appears to be reinforced paper tape. The covers and pages are worn. All but one of the leaves are still attached, however several are beginning to separate. The newspaper clippings have been pasted over most of the ledger entries. Almost all of the clippings and some of the ephemera have been stained by the glue Gilchrist used to affix them to the pages. Gilchrist received his medical degree from the Homoeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania following his service in the Civil War. He remained at that school as an anatomy instructor until 1867 when he became a Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan for two years until he began his private practice in Owatonna, Minnesota, after which he served as the Chief of Staff for the Detroit Homoeopathic Hospital. In the mid-1880s, Gilchrist transferred to the University of Iowa where he was appointed as both a Professor of English and Professor of Homoeopathic Medicine. He remained at Iowa as the Chair of Surgery within the College of Homoeopathic Medicine until shortly before his in 1906. Scarce. As of 2016, no similar American homoeopathic scrapbooks, journals, or diaries are in the trade, although one from Europe is priced at $5,000. No auction records for similar items per ABPC or Rare Book Hub. OCLC shows no similar items at institutions however a series of scrapbooks with biographic clippings about homoeopathic physicians is at Drexel University, and the proceedings of the 1994 San Francisco Conference on Culture, Knowledge, and Healing contain the results of a survey by Arnold Michalousk showing ephemera and manuscripts from homoeopathic physicians are held by 22 institutions.

Mother Goose or the Old Nursery Rhymes

1881. first edition. First Edition of Kate Greenaway’s “Mother Goose”in the Extremely Rare Dust Jacket"One of the Prettiest, Quaintest, Most Engaging Little Books Imaginable"[GREENAWAY, Kate, illustrator]. Mother Goose or the Old Nursery Rhymes. Illustrated by Kate Greenaway. Engraved and printed by Edmund Evans. London: George Routledge and Sons, [n.d., 1881].First edition, second issue (Lattice Edition). Small octavo (6 5/8 x 4 7/8 inches; 168 x 123 mm.). 48 pp. With many full-page color illustrations in the text. Original white cloth with pink cloth spine. Covers with “Mother Goose” printed in brown (“G” upside down) surrounded by olive green latticework design. Edges stained pink. Olive green end-papers. Some light offsetting to the preliminary leaves. Original salmon-colored dust printed in red. Minimal short tears to jacket extremities and a few small ink stains to front panel. Small neat ink inscription dated "Xmas '81" on front free end-paper. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. This second issue has “Contents of this Book” on verso of front end-paper; seal of Edmund Evans on recto of rear endpaper; “bush” in last line of p. 18; page number right side up on p. 38; “boys” in last line of p. 47; and no defective letters in the last line of p. 6 and the first line of p. 27."Commercially, the book was not as successful as the Birthday Book, but the press response was as enthusiastic as that to Under the Window. The Magazine of Art was most extravagant, claiming that the books was 'one of the prettiest, quaintest, most engaging little books imaginable'; in their critic's opinion Kate had become a 'fairy godmother': If Miss Greenaway had done no more than Mother Goose, she would yet have done enough. Her place among nursery superstitions will be an honourable and good one for many and many a year." (Rodney Engen. Kate Greenaway A Biography, p.81).Schuster & Engen 140 (1b). Thomson 138c.

        Dalziels' Bible Gallery.

London: George Routledge and Sons (printed at the Dalziels' Camden Press),, 1881. Illustrations from the Old Testament. From the original drawings by Sir Frederick Leighton, E. J. Poynter, H. H. Armstead, F. Maddox Brown, S. Solomon, F. Sandys, E. G. Dalziel, W. Small, A. B. Houghton, G. F. Watts, E. Armytage, F. R. Pickersgill, E. Burne Jones, T. Dalziel; E. J. Brewtnall, Fs. Walker, A. Murch and Holman Hunt. Folio. Publisher's half vellum, red morocco label, lettered in gilt on the front cover, floriate patterned endpapers. Housed in a custom made blue cloth slipcase. Title page printed in red & black, 62 wood-engraved plates by the Dalziel Brothers, printed on India paper. Bookseller's ticket of D. B. Friend (Brighton). Some signs of handling to binding, scattered marginal foxing (clear of images), occasional marginal cockling. A very good copy with excellent impressions of the plates. First and limited edition, number 338 of 1,000 copies. A sumptuous production, "the artistic level of which is surely higher than that in any other of the Dalziels' collaborative volumes. The book is best seen in the India-paper proof copies" (Ray). Gregory R. Suriano, in his The Pre-Raphaelite Illustrators, draws attention to the fact that the Dalziels' Bible Gallery "was a response to the publication of the Nazarene artist Schnorr von Carolsfeld's Bible Pictures (published in Germany 1851 and in England by Williams and Norgate in 1855)". In fact the brothers had been approaching artists to contribute as early as 1863, and most of the work in the Bible Gallery dates from the 1860s. Copies were frequently broken so that a favourite illustration from the Bible could be framed and mounted but this copy is complete. A high spot of Pre-Raphaelite book illustration.

A Naturalist's Wanderings in the Interior of South Africa. 383 pp, frontis, 6 chromolithograph and 9 colored plates, text ill, 3 b/w folding maps and 1 colored folding map. Author was one of the first men to see Victoria Falls in full flood. A very important natural history work on South Africa. Elaborate gilt and colored scene zebra scene stamped on front cover, antelope horns on spine and gilt bustard scene on lower board. Most of the first edition was destroyed in a fire at the publisher's warehouse so true first editions are most uncommon. Carter, Sloan & Company, Makers of Gold Jewelry, Bracelets, and Chains. American Watch Company of Waltham Mass. [Robbins & Appleton]. Alfred H. Smith & Co., Diamonds. Each of the four sections has its own title page and is noted as Copyright 1881. Uncommon, no doubt due to the original expense of production and limited number of serious clientele. Worldcat shows only two institutional holdings, both in Special Collections: Brown University and New York Public Libraries. Paper over board. Spine professionally stabilized and rebacked by Peter Gregoroff. New spine and new endpapers; all else original and complete, with small marginal paper repair to page 31/32.
