Lettre autographe signée à la Comtesse Potocka : « Maupassant prêtre libre »

1880 - - Paris s.d. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Signed autograph letter of Guy de Maupassant to Countess Potocka, 26 lines in black ink on a sheet of laid paper headed "GM 83 Dulong Street". Maupassant evokes the episode that marks his entry into familiarity with the countess: the famous story of dolls. Following a lost bet, the Countess Potocka sent Maupassant rag dolls representing the ladies invited to a future dinner. By play, Maupassant took six of them and stuffed them with the belly of cloth before autograph dedication of the author them back to the countess. In a word that accompanied the mail, Maupassant boasted of having them all engrossed in one night. To get out of an evening that he would prefer to spend with the countess he had to "[.] make diplomacy, employ the ruses and machinations of the most skilful. In spite of everything, he will only be able to: "[.] save around eleven o'clock or eleven thirty. In order to know the guests who will be at the party, he asks Potocka: " I'll have to give six dolls back to me ". A little joke that reflects their level of intimacy. He regrets to have committed for this evening which prevents him from going to the countess's house: " Do you see where I am? The evening for which I had engaged should not begin to be pleasant until midnight, all guests left. At last, he proposes to: "[.] scream, like the brother-in-law of your friend:" To me camphor and water lily "! Both substances were used as anaphrodisiac or to calm nervousness. Despite his lack of desire, he will have to go to this dinner but he plans to offer: "[.] to God, and to you, this sacrifice which will seem delicious to me. I will come with feelings of contrition and sacred exaltation. To conclude the most humorous of Maupassant's letters to Countess Potocka, the author signs: " Maupassant free priest ."         [SHIPBOARD PRINTING] Southern Cross and Lusitania Herald. No. 1. Wednesday, October 20th, 1880.

[Lusitania : at sea, Australia bound], October 20 1880. Folio, [4] pp bifolium of bluish laid paper with watermark of W. Howard Kent and Britannia surmounted by crown, lightly ruled in blue; drop-head title; the first 3 pages with mimeographed printing in purple ink of a manuscript text; pages 1 and 2 in two columns, page 3 with single column text, and a cartoon illustration; final page not printed, but with a contemporary annotation in ink referring to one of the passengers, 'David Coffey / Shoes Boots / Merchandise'; original folds, two spots of old glue residue at bottom and top margins (not encroaching on text); the printing has faded badly in a couple of sections, although the text is complete and mostly legible; [together with] [Concert Programme] Orient S.S. Lusitania / London to Sydney / Grand Vocal and Instrumental Concert / Friday 18th Oct. 1880. [Lusitania : at sea, Australia bound], October 18 1880. Single leaf, small octavo (176 x 113 mm), on laid paper, printed on one side only in purple ink (as the preceding item), comprising a manuscript list of the 15 acts performed at a concert by named passengers; original vertical and horizontal folds, in very good condition. Neither the Southern Cross and Lusitania Herald nor its associated concert programme is recorded. The copies we offer here, as well as being extremely rare examples of nineteenth century shipboard printing in general, are possibly unique, and, in much the same way as a passenger's ship board diary, they provide an insight into life on an emigrant ship and the various activities that were organised to relieve the tedium on the long voyage to Australia. The Lusitania was built in 1871 for the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, but in 1877 was transferred to the Orient Line. She first sailed on the Orient Line's new service from London to Melbourne on 28 June 1877. The passage at that time (prior to opening of the Suez Canal in 1881) was around 7 weeks. On her second outward voyage of 1880 the Lusitania sailed from London on September 30 and Plymouth on October 2, arriving at Melbourne on November 15. The Southern Cross and Lusitania Herald includes snippets of news of the outside world received by telegram at St. Vincent (Cape Verde), where the ship called on October 11, and informaton about ship board activities such as music and a spelling bee. About half of the third page is taken up by a fairly crude lampoon of the ship's captain, captioned "Our Chairman". The concert programme lists musical pieces or songs performed by various first and second class passengers, one of whom is a Mr. Coffey (mentioned on the back of the Southern Cross); other names include Mrs. Yeats, Mrs. and Miss Cohn, and Miss Bowman. The type of printing process used on board the Lusitania appears to have been a very early form of stencil or mimeograph such as the Papyograph (patented 1874) or Trypograph (patented 1877).

Peacock's New Double Dissection. Geography & History. Scotland.

William Peacock & Co., [1880s]., London, - A rare puzzle map of Scotland Double-sided engraved jigsaw, hand coloured, one side a map of Scotland by Gall & Inglis, the other portraits of the monarchs of England from William I to Victoria, one piece with some loss, engraved key sheets; all housed within original wooden box with sliding lid, pictorial label on top. Peacock & Co was a well known manufacturer of dissected maps and puzzles, founded by Edward Peacock, a Baptist minister and carpenter. His "Peacock Puzzles" were inspired by the games and maps produced by his previous employer, Edward Wallis. He founded Peacock & Co in 1853, and was succeeded in 1861 by his son, William, who expanded it to become one of the world's most prolific producers of wooden jigsaws. The Peacocks used existing maps for their puzzles - the map of Scotland used here was produced by John Gall and Robert Inglis, a team of Scottish map publishers based in Edinburgh.

HISTORY OF DON QUIXOTE The Text Edited by J W Clark and A Biographical Notice of Cervantes, by T Teignmouth Shore

London: Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, [c. 1880]. A very early issue of this wonderfully illustrated Cervantes. With 118 spectacular illustrations by by Gustave Doré. Royal 4to. (32 x 25 cm), half green morocco by Maclehose of Glasgow, green cloth boards, upper cover titled in gilt, spine with raised bands, gilt rules and lettering, marbled edges and endpapers. xxviii, 737 pp. A very handsome and sturdy copy, as fine and fresh and bright, the binding is very strong and well preserved, beautiful and of fine craftsmanship. AN UNUSUALLY HANDSOME COPY. VERY SCARCE IN SUCH WELL PRESERVED CONDITION. Gustave Doré was one of the greatest illustrators of his day. He was born in Strassburg in 1832. In 1848, he moved to Paris where "his facility as a draughtsman was extraordinary." He was a prolific worker and his subjects were usually religious or historical. He died in January of 1883. His grand and magnificent style is a perfect complement for Cervantes heroic tale. This great tome presents one of our favorite printings of the Spanish classic and, because of the weight of the text block, is usually found broken and loose. This copy is as sturdy as one could hope for and is especially handsome as well.

Aspects of Verdi, G. Martin, 1988, p. 286]. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Lettre autographe signée à la Comtesse Potocka : « Maupassant prêtre libre »

Signed autograph letter of Guy de Maupassant to Countess Potocka, 26 lines in black ink on a sheet of laid paper headed "GM 83 Dulong Street".Maupassant evokes the episode that marks his entry into familiarity with the countess: the famous story of dolls. To get out of an evening that he would prefer to spend with the countess he had to "[...] make diplomacy, employ the ruses and machinations of the most skilful. In spite of everything, he will only be able to: "[...] save around eleven o'clock or eleven thirty. At last, he proposes to: "[...] scream, like the brother-in-law of your friend:" To me camphor and water lily "! Both substances were used as anaphrodisiac or to calm nervousness.Despite his lack of desire, he will have to go to this dinner but he plans to offer: "[...] to God, and to you, this sacrifice which will seem delicious to me. I will come with feelings of contrition and sacred exaltation. To conclude the most humorous of Maupassant's letters to Countess Potocka, the author signs: " Maupassant free priest ." Paris s.d.         The Works of the Sisters Bronte: The Professor; Jane Eyre; Villette; Shirley; Tenant of Wildfell Hall; Agnes Grey; Wuthering Heights.

London: Smith, Elder, and Co, 1880. Finely bound set of the works of the Sisters Bronte. Octavo, 7 volumes. Bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards. Gilt titles and tooling to the spine, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, marbled edges, illustrated. In near fine condition. A very nice set. The Brontes were a nineteenth-century literary family associated with the village of Thornton in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The sisters, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne are well known as poets and novelists. Like many contemporary female writers, they originally published their poems and novels under male pseudonyms: Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Their stories immediately attracted attention, although not always the best, for their passion and originality. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were later to be accepted as masterpieces of literature.
