Cobbe, Frances Power.
Williams and Norgate 1880. The four essays included in The Hopes of the Human Race discuss the afterlife, sin, godly omnipotence, and divine justice and explore the ramifications of those philosophies on the organization of society. Cobbe takes particular issue with the conflation of religious ideals and the law, like legally punishing women for Òsins of unchastityÓ (p. 92-93), and asserts that moral good must exist Òoutside of conscious or recognized religious influencesÓ (p. 205). Octavo. 222 pp. PublisherÕs mauve cloth with gilt-titled spine. Dark red rule and gilt fleur-de-lis on upper board. A bit of toning to spine and some light rubbing to extremities. Two light smudges on lower board. Partially unopened. Some light foxing to the first few leaves and a bit of faint toning to margins. A very good, clean copy inscribed by Cobbe to Philip G. Peabody, CobbeÕs friend and a contributor to her book Vivisection in America Second edition. Presentation copy inscribed to Peabody Òfrom his old friend,Ó with the inscription dated August 1896. The first edition was published by Williams and Northgate in 1874. Frances Power Cobbe (1822 Ð 1904) was a suffragist, a nonfiction writer, and an animal rights advocate who founded both the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection and the National Anti-Vivisection Society. Cobbe was also an acquaintance of Charles Darwin, though she took issue with his theories on the supposed biological inferiority of women and published an article, Darwinism in MoralsÊ(1871), to critique his Descent of Man. Cobbes other works include On the Pursuits … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Come Nuovo. William Addison Dwiggins (1880-1956) was among the most influential and innovative designers of the early twentieth century. He was a master calligrapher, type designer, illustrator, private press printer, and a pioneer of advertising, magazine, and book design. Despite this, too few contemporary designers and design enthusiasts are familiar with the full scope and remarkable creativity of Dwiggins's work. The Book W. A. Dwiggins: A Life in Design will offer an engaging and inspiring overview of the designer's wide-ranging creative output and lasting impact on the graphic arts. Bruce Kennett's careful research, warm prose, and inclusion of numerous personal accounts from Dwiggins's friends and contemporaries portray not only a brilliant designer, but a truly likable character. Deluxe edition, limited and numbered. This copy is 72/211 Signed by the authors. Advance Praise for W. A. Dwiggins: A Life in Design "A book to spend a year with. This book is many things, but most of all it is proof positive that if there is any doubt about the origin theory of graphic design, Dwiggins did more to promote, diversify, and integrate the graphic, typographic, and printing-arts disciplines than anyone of his generation." -- Steven Heller, author, art director, and design historian "One of the many strengths of this book is that it deals both with Dwiggins's familiar typefaces -- Metro, Electra, Caledonia -- and with his less well-known types, illustrated with drawings or trial cuttings. The result is the most complete conspectus we have of an extraordinary variety … [Click Below for Full Description]

[publisher not identified] 1880-1900s, [Japan]. An album of twelve elegant colour woodblock-printed erotic scenes, probably produced at the end of the 19th century. Stains along the margins, but attractive and very good (with a neat ink drawing of a house on the verso). [With]: Small handbill for Maxwell's Prepared Gypsum. Measuring 4.5" x 8". Not illustrated. Some foxing and a small ink correction, near fine. [With]: Small trade card. Measuring 3" x 4.25". MONTAGUE, William Edward.
Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, , 1880. Octavo. Original moderate blue fine oblique-grain cloth, gilt-lettered spine, gilt rustic titling to front cover flanked by a pair of pictorial roundels, dark brown-coated endpapers. Rear inner hinge cracked but sound, top fore corner of front free endpaper lost. A particularly nice copy, clean, bright, and square. First edition of this surprisingly uncommon eye-witness account of the Anglo-Zulu War. This attractive copy with a highly appealing provenance: the front free endpaper verso bearing the ownership inscription of a serving officer, "Captain Belford, 17th Lancers". Ernest Augustus Belford (b. 1848) was present at the last major battle of the war, fought at the Zulu capital of Ulundi (4 July 1879), where the lancers assisted in the final pursuit once the fearless Zulu assaults had been broken by a withering fire of combined artillery and musketry, described by Montague as "our blazing, deadly wall of fire" (p.233). He then recounts briefly the moment when "the square opened out and let forth the cavalry, which swept across the … ground; and in fifty minutes from its commencement the battle was won". The 17th's charge was a popular subject for some of the leading military artists of the day, including Orlando Norrie, John Charlton, and Henri-Louis Dupray. Fortescue gives a good account of the action in his regimental history, "once clear of the square, the regiment formed in echelon of wings, rank entire … and charged. It was met by a hot fire from the Zulus, who were concealed in long grass in a donga [a dr … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: , 1880-1910. London, 1880-1910. Unique. 460 glass magic lantern slides, in original labelled wooden slide boxes: 266 of London itself, 95 depicting characters from Dickens, 194 depicted scenes and locations that appear in Dickens’ novels, 32 images of castles and cathedrals, and a further 53 images depicting Boswell and Johnson related environs. Mostly 3” x 3” and in excellent condition. The majority are monochrome, but there are numerous tinted and hand coloured examples. The whole collection, with a cased 1920’s era electric lantern complete with a box of spares and accessories, comprises what must have been a rather thrilling and informative exhibition of the kind extremely popular in the last quarter of the 19th century. A fascinating collection viewed in the main, through the lens (no pun intended) of “Dickensian” London and its surrounding area. The breadth of the collection, and the clear labelling and arrangement of the slides in their boxes suggest a rather professional presentation, possibly in the form of a lecture series, or a travelling entertainment. The entertainer, or lecturer would have been able to begin with an atmospheric overview of London of the time, interspersed with specific characters, buildings, and events, offer some historical context and social overview, segue back into whatever literary or artistic specifics he fancied (or were requested by his audience), regale everyone with the splendours of Hampton Court Palace, emphasise the sheer energy and pace of London life with views of Oxford St. and some luminous hand coloured im … [Click Below for Full Description]

[California]
Oakland: Thompson & West, 1880. 234pp., including colored "Map of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona" plus eighty-three full-page or double- page lithographs (the first included as part of the pagination). Oblong quarto. Original half sheep and green cloth, stamped in blind and gilt, spine gilt. Hinges reinforced, corners neatly repaired, front and rear end leaves with some neat tissue repairs at the edges. Titlepage and two contents leaves with a mended vertical tear, not affecting text. Final text leaf with a small tear in the outer margin, not affecting text. Very good. A magnificent illustrated history of Nevada County, California. The wonderful lithographs ably show how in just thirty years the area that had been a rough and tumble center of gold rush activity was transformed into a lovely group of communities in the Sierra Nevada foothills. "The colourful and airy rendering contributes much to the appeal of this extensive series of images that forms one of the most comprehensive visual reports carried out on any Brazilian city in the period" (Correa do Lago). The album was first issued in 1873 under the title Album de Pernambuco e seus Arrabaldes [Album of Pernambuco and its Environs] with 50 plates. It was subsequently reissued with varying numbers of plates, some copies having as few as 15 to 20, and with the composition rarely repeating. Carls was a German graphic artist, designer, and photographer who joined the wave of German immigration to Brazil, settling in Recife in 1859, and establishi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zürich, Orell Füssli & Co., 1880. 4to. With 24 numbered chromolithographed plates (each printed in 2 to 6 colours). Contemporary red half morocco. 17, [1 blank] pp. + 24 plates Extremely rare first impression of the first and only edition of 24 colour-printed plates showing ornamental designs using stylized leaves and flowers. Cinncinnati, OH: Cincinnati Lith. Co., 1880. A large promotional image for the Columbus Buggy Company which in its heyday, manufactured one of every five buggies used anywhere (some accounts say the US, other claim the world). Clearly, this image implies the world over. With a promotional trade card for the company. In the upper right corner is a ship where any number of buggies have been offloaded. Coming down the road are people in buggies drawn by ostriches, although the illustrator thought they would evoke emus. The main image shows a properly dressed man and woman in a buggy being drawn by four harnessed ostriches pulling the buggy, with two brown boys riding them. The implication is that they are Aboriginals but they have nothing of the stature of an Aborigine. Below this is written "Columbus Buggy Co. Standard. World Over. Columbus, Ohio. U.S.A." The lower corners illustrate different scenes. The lower left corner has a scene of kangaroos bounding and emus running, somewhat reminiscent of the images in the Illustrated London News earlier in the century. The lower right corner illustrates the massive factory complex with at least 6 buildings and the caption "View from Union Depot of portion of the worksof COLUMBUS BUGGY CO. and PETERS DASH CO. AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY & LITERATURE] [ANONYMOUS PHOTOGRAPHER]
[N.p., n.d., photographer unknown], 1880. Eight clear and well-composed images, clearly the work of a professional or highly-skilled amateur photographer, documenting an African-American settlement in what appears to be the Great Plains or Semi-Arid west. Based upon architecture and style of dress, ca. 1880s-90s, and we believe there is fair evidence that the subject matter is Nicodemus, Kansas, a town in western Kansas founded by ex-slaves after the Civil War. The images here collected appear to be unknown, or at least unpublished. Extensive on-line searching for analogous images of African-American pioneers in the Great Plains and Western U.S. has turned up no exact matches. Very little contemporary photo documentation of Nicodemus exists (making these slides a potentially exciting discovery), but what there is has been published in the substantial guide to the Nicodemus Historic Site by the National Park Service (Promised Land on the Solomon: Black Settlement at Nicodemus, Kansas. USGPO: 1986; a copy included with this collection). Those published photographs display a marked simillarity in architecture, landscape, and human subject to the ones collected here. The Park Service guidebook notes that, while the earliest structures in Nicodemus were build of sod and stone, by the mid-1880s - coinciding with the likely time-frame of these photographs - Nicodemus was in the midst of … [Click Below for Full Description]
