Hi, This lot is an 1880 Rebound Wisden , with the original covers bound within. This is the 17th edition and the the range of the harder to get years in Original form. This book is in Good Condition mainly due to the rear cover marking it down. The boards are in Brown with gilt to the spine and also Gerald Brodribb to the front. The front cover is nice and tall, there is some darkness , the egdes of the cover is very worn and there is a tiny loss in the middle of the cover next to a small tear, name to the top of the page. The rear cover has some major loss and the biggest downside to this book, please see the pictures but it is a couple of inches missing. No trimming to report, these are very tall books. There is minimal foxing and nice clean white pages. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Hi, This lot is an 1880 Rebound Wisden , with the original covers bound within. This book is in Excellent Condition and I can't expess that enough. The boards are in Brown and mimic the modern day hardback on the frotn and WW2 HBs to the spine, the boards look pretty new and the content of the book is very nice. The covers are tall, mark free and very light, to both the front and the rear, tinyest of mark to the top middle of the rear cover. The inside pages are bright white with only a couple of dots to the top of the page block. Tip Top. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Hi, This lot is an 1880 Original Paperback Wisden. It is in good+ condition. The spine and cover corners have had touch ups. The covers are very nice, odd small mark and touch ups around the edges but tiptop. There is a name in pencil to page iii at the top. Internally there is some spotting it is mainly to the page block but does come into the book at the edge of the pages , it is quite ugly in places so have marked the price of the book down considerably. BINGHAM [Robert Jefferson]; COLLIN [Raphael?]; GOUPIL
Bingham Collin Goupil et Michelez, 1880. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Tall folio, 2 volumes, illustrated. Measuring about 36cm x 50cm (14" x 19.5"). Near fine in contemporary full cyan-blue crushed morocco, with elaborate patterned silk endpapers and doublures, gilt borders, top edge gilt. Spines faded to deep green/brown, though the gilt titling and stamping remains about 80% bright. Just a hint of rubbing to the joints, but really a well-preserved set, housed in what are likely contemporary blue cloth slipcases, worn at the extremities, and somewhat tender, but structurally sound. A magnificent production; presenting ninety-five works of fine art in major French collections of the period, reproduced photographically by major photographers of the period. Each photograph is mounded to heavy handmade apper, and then matted with the same paper stock. Each is protected by a tissue guard which includes the printed name of the artist and the work below (a few tissue guards are partly torn or creased, but nearly all are pristine). Very little in the way of bibliographical information is provided in the published book; there is no date or place of publication, nor is the handsome, elaborate binding signed. The surnames of the four photographers noted on the title page are reasonably easy to locate, however; "Bingham" is certainly Robert Jefferson Bingham, a pioneer of the collodion process, who built a successful career in Paris on his ability to photograph works of art. According to Monovisions Magazine, "[Bingham's] reproductions of paintings were famed for their suggestion of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mendeleev, D.
Issue 1 [and all]. St-Petersburg: V.Demakov, 1880. [2], 160, 80 pp., 14 folding plates, printed separately at the cartographer A.Iliyin in Saint-Petersburg. Contemporary quarter-leather binding. Slightly foxed. Pre-revolutionary stamps of Tiflis Arsenal on the title page, p.1 and front endpapers. The most important Mendeleev's work on the aeronautics. His interest in the topic has emerged in 1850s, when he finished up his dissertation 'On the Specific Volumes' (1856), after which he suggested that to prove the theories from the work it's important to get to upper atmosphere. This led to the project of aerostat that Mendeleev presented in 1875 with the purpose to go to the stratosphere where he designed a cabin for the researcher, supplied with the compressed air. Later he even proposed the plan for 10-15 experimental flights but 30 000 rubles needed for that were not found. In 1878 he has made his first air flight in Paris, on Giffard airship, and met with Dupuy de Lôme and then with James Glaisher in London. Coming back home Mendeleev finished this work, which became the first work in Russian on the subject. The founding father of modern aerodynamics Nikolay Zhukovsky (1847-1921) later claimed that this book 'became the foundation for the later development of the air flying and the ballistics'. In 1880 Mendeleev finds the 7th department of Russian Technical Society, dedicated to the aeronautics. In 1887 Mendeleev undertook the famous flight on the hot air balloon near Klin to witness the full solar eclipse. The weather conditions were poor and he was suggested not to parti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Excellent état de l'ensemble. Bonne reliure solide et décorative. Intérieur parfait. Sans rousseurs. Edition originale rare. [Click Below for Full Description]

YAMAMOTO, Akio (or Keigu)
1880. Scroll (420 x 12,000 mm.), with elaborate silk brocade endpaper at beginning. [Japan]: 1880-86. This beautifully rendered scroll of natural history paintings was executed, with one exception, by Akio (or Keigu) Yamamoto (1827-1903), Confucian scholar, doctor, botanist, and highly gifted artist. He was born in Kyoto, the son of the prominent doctor and botanist Boyo Yamamoto (1778-1859), the direct disciple of Ono Ranzan (1729-1810), the famous professor of botany who wrote a series of classic botanical books. Keigu "continued his father's work in his private school in Osaka and spent his time organizing meetings that were regularly attended by both honzogaku amateurs and Japanese biologists."-Federico Marcon, The Knowledge of Nature and the Nature of Knowledge in Early Modern Japan, p. 301. Keigu travelled widely throughout Japan, drawing plants and animals. He gave botanical instruction to the Meiji emperor and other members of the royal family. Keigu also wrote several standard works on materia medica and left many sketch books and scrolls, which entered the Kyoto rare book trade in 1932; some of these were published only in the 1980s. All of his sketch books and scrolls offered valuable and unique information regarding native plants and animals as well as those that had been introduced into Japan. Our scroll contains 14 very finely executed color paintings of plants, birds, and animals. The paintings are quite unique in their remarkable spaciousness. For instance, the image of the octopus is 1410 mm. long. The images include a most unusual morn … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

A hint of rubbing to joints and extremities, a couple of faint finger smudges to preliminary leaves, otherwise A VERY FINE SET, quite clean, fresh, and bright internally with ample margins, in sound, lustrous bindings. This is a deluxe limited edition of Eliot's historical novel, offered here in lovely custom bindings from a leading English workshop. The sole Eliot novel to be set in the distant past, "Romola" was inspired by a visit to Italy the author made with her lover George Lewes. According to DNB, "in Florence, Lewes drew [Eliot's] attention to the history of the city in the late fifteenth century, particularly the role in public life played by the Dominican monk Savonarola, who led a religious revival after the fall of the Medici family but was tried and executed as a heretic in 1498." It is against the background of Savonarola's fall that our story takes place. Our volume features a graceful design from one of the most respected English binders during the last half of the 19th century. Born in London in 1836, John Ramage served an … [Click Below for Full Description]

ELIOT, George
Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons,, [c.1880]. 8 volumes bound as 7, octavo (184 x 119 mm). Contemporary half calf, brown morocco labels, gilt titles and decoration to spines, raised bands, gilt rolls to marbled sides, marbled endpapers and edges. Title page vignettes and 20 plates. Tips lightly bumped, occasional mild wear and chips to extremities, couple of marks to boards, light foxing to a few leaves. Stereotyped Edition. This handsome set includes Eliot's seven novels and Scenes of Clerical Life. Eliot's novels were popular for their political views and depiction of rural society for which she drew on her own early experience. However, Eliot did not confine herself to her bucolic roots. Romola is a historical romance set in late 15th century Florence, reflecting her wider reading and interests. Whilst Eliot's verse was not so well received, the popularity of her novels has endured. Middlemarch is still considered one of the greatest English novels and has been described by Virginia Woolf as "the magnificent book that, with all its imperfections, is one of the few English novels written for grown-up people."

Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Macmillan and Co, 1880. 1307 Pp., 8vo, James MacLehose and Sons binding, finely finished hardcovers in full textured brown leather, with five raised bands, outer boards and spine decorated with triple blind rule stamped borders accented by floral devices at corners, inner dentelles mirror exterior board pattern, marbled endpapers, full gilt leaf edges, binder's stamp on front free endpaper, upper left top corner. Binder note: James MacLehose (1811-1885) was a well-known Glasgow publisher and bookseller, who opened up a fine bindery alongside his other business concerns. No ordinary trade work was done. All the books bound there were either the firm's own work or the work of private customers. Levant, morocco, and a special calf are the principal styles, hand finished and single lettered, and though many of the books were elaborately bound with special designs, a large share were crafted in "a severely plain style", which found favour particularly in Scotland . Examples of MacLehose s more elaborate bindings can be seen in Glasgow and London, but these volumes are more representative of the severely plain style mentioned. The beauty of the bindings comes from carefully executed blind rules and heavily textured calf or goat rather than from a profusion of tooling. So, what makes these books special? This sort of investigation opens up intriguing windows onto how books were valued and presented in nineteenth-century Scotland, as well as providing some examples of the book binder s art from a period which is less heavily studied than earlier centuries. But I think it also provi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bunnell, Lafayette Houghton
Fleming H. Revell, Chicago, 1880. First edition of Bunnell's account of the discovery of Yosemite Valley with the Mariposa Battalion in 1851. Octavo, original cloth with gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel, patterned endpapers, illustrated with 21 engravings including frontispiece portrait of Bunnell. In very good condition with wear to the extremities and rear panel.     American physician, author, and explorer Lafayette Bunnell was best known for his involvement with the Mariposa Battalion, the first non-indigenous discoverers to enter Yosemite Valley. Discovery was not the main purpose of the trip: the Battalion rode out in search of Native American tribal leaders involved in recent raids on American settlements. Bunnell explored the Valley and named many of its features. Discovery of the Yosemite, and the Indian war of 1851, first published in 1880 contains his account of his exploration and the actions of the Battalion. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1880. Very Good. Set of 14 photographic prints depicting scenes from Montana. 11 photographs are mounted albumens. 9 of these 11 measure 7 ½" x 4 ¼" and depict Montana scenes, the other 2 mounts contain portraits of various unknown individuals and measure between 1" x 1" and 3" x 3". Three photographs are not mounted and measure between 3 ½" x 3 ½" and 7 ½" x 4 ½" and depict a scenic mountain view and Dillon, Montana street views. 1880. Very Good. Set of six mounted albumens depicting artwork of early Cincinnati, Ohio by artist John Casper Wild. We believe the photographer of these images is James Landy, of Landy Photo, Cincinnati, although no imprint is present. Likely taken around 1880s. All albumens are on original mounts which measure 15" x 17 ¾"; albumens measure 10" x 13 ½". All are identified in pencil on mounts; no content on verso. Also included in this set is a 5"x7" sepia-toned photo print of one of the albumens and two color lithographs published by the Cincinnati Historical Society in the late 1960s. Mounts have moderate soiling and light wear; original mounts are affixed to modern cardstock mounts; a couple of the albumens have minor soiling and all have light yellowing. Overall very good. John Caspar Wild (1804-1846) was the artist of the original watercolors depicted in these photographs. He was born in Switzerland, lived in Paris for 15 years and came to Philadelphia in the 1830s. He lived in Cincinnati between 1835 and 1837. Wild's original watercolors were created in 1835, and are currently found at the Cincinnati Museum Center. The photographer of the albumens is believed to be James M. Landy (1838-1897). He was prolific in Cincinnati and won awards in Chicago, Paris, New York, Vienna and London. Mosè Bianchi (Monza 1840 - Monza 1904)
1880. Acquaforte, acquatinta e puntasecca misure: mm 176 x 120; 172 x 118 Pittore e incisore italiano. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Indiana]. [Moran, Thomas]
Auburn, In: George W. Weamer, 1880. Very good.. [56]pp. plus frontispiece. Original grey printed wrappers. Light wear and soiling, contemporary ownership inscription on front cover. Faint dampstain to lower corner, otherwise internally clean. Lovely copy of this illustrated almanac, which combines art, the calendar, and odd facts and prose pieces. In fact, the calendar would seem to be a standard byproduct of the almanac format, with illustration as the main focus of the publication. The work includes numerous wood engravings -- nearly one on every page and some a full page in size -- by Thomas Moran, John S. Davis, F.B. Schell, J.D, Woodward, and others. We find one copy in OCLC, at the Indiana State Library. Given the dearth of records, and that the other recorded copy extant is also for 1880, we surmise this was a short-lived venture, and that this may be the only year published.

Sebah & Joaillier
Istanbul: Sebah & Joaillier, 1880. This magnificent pair of panoramic photographs of Istanbul, measuring 11 ft. and 8 1⁄2 ft. respectively, provides sweeping views of the great buildings, monuments, and geographical features of the city. These include the city walls and seven towers, Süleymaniye Mosque, Sultanahmet Mosque (the Blue Mosque), Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Golden Horn, and the Bosphorus. The images also capture domestic and commercial architecture, daily street life, bridges, and the bustling waterway of the Golden Horn. The two towers from which these images are taken are prominent in the centers of their respective panoramas. The first series of photographs, a 10-part panorama, looks across Beyoglu (the European side of modern-day Istanbul known until the 20th century as Pera) and the Golden Horn toward the ancient city with its great mosques. This series of photographs was taken from the top of the fourteenth-century Galata Tower. The panorama is by Sebah & Joaillier, one of the most distinguished photography firms in late 19th-century Constantinople. [with] (ISTANBUL.) Berggren, G. There is an interesting advertisement on the inside rear cover for Paul Wagner's Bazaar, 22, 24, & 26 Commerce Street, San Antonio, Texas, Importer and Dealer in Fancy Goods, Toys and Notions, Mexican and Indian Curiosities." Among the views are the Alamo, James Bowie, Col. Benjamin Milam, Alamo Plaza, Wagner’s Grand Bazaar, San Antonio River, San Pedro Springs, Our Mexican Citizens, exterior and interior shots of the missions (Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan Capistran, & San Francisco de la Espada), various street scenes, Texas Cowboys in Camp, military posts, etc. These photo-lithographs were produced by Louis Glaser of Leipzig, printer of souvenir books and postcards. He used a method, the Glaser Process, in which monochrome images were produced by using at least five different lithographic stones, not for different colors but for different tonalities. The result was a much sharper image with a greater depth of field than was available in photographs of that period.
