London: Griffith and Farran, 1880 - Octavo. Original green diagonal-fine-ribbed cloth over bevelled boards, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board in gilt and black, blind frame to rear, brown coated endpapers, top and fore edge untrimmed. Extremities lightly rubbed, a few small pale markings to boards, mild foxing to fore edge and advertisements, a few trivial spots to title page and text. An excellent copy. Folding map frontispiece. First edition of this "rather interesting account of a tour throughout South Africa from march to October 1878. The author, who was in search of health, started from Pietermaritzburg, and enjoyed some good shooting en route; amongst other places visited were Spitzkop and Lydenberg, and there is an excellent description of these goldfields at this period, together with notes on the Boers and natives" (Mendelssohn), as well as the Sekukuni campaigns. The game he hunted included springbok, blessbox, klipspringer, reedbuck, wildebeest, lion, buffalo, and giraffe. A handsome copy of this "well-written work that ably describes the terrain [and] climate and encounters with native tribes and wild beasts" (Czech). The author (c.1856-1894) is recorded as an officer in the Royal Perthshire Militia (gazetted lieutenant 1874). Czech p. 246; Mendelssohn II p. 267; SABIB IV p. 126. [Attributes: First Edition]

By the end of 1880, only 49 copies had been sold at one guinea. A near fine, if not the finest surviving copy of one of the great rarities of nineteenth-century literature. Workers in the Dawn, described by Sutherland as having the ?melodramatic excesses of a first novel?, centres on the wretched life of Arthur Golding and his destructive relationship with two women, Helen Norman, a clergyman?s daughter, and Carrie Mitchell, a young prostitute. Arthur takes pity on the ?whoring and brandy-drinking? Carrie and marries her in an attempt to cure her ways. He fails miserably and flees to America seeking a melodramatic end by hurling himself into Niagara Falls screaming ?Helen! Helen!? Loosely inserted is a typed unpriced catalogue description of this set by the New York dealer James F. Drake, Inc. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Their route took them through most of the former khanates of Central Asia, just recently absorbed into Russian Turkistan - Tashkent, Samarkand, Ferghana, Kokand, and Kuldja - before visiting Omsk in Siberia and returning to Moscow via the Urals. The superb binding was designed and executed by Charles Magnier who became renowned for his edition bindings at this high point for French book production.

Day, F. Holland- Original Watercolor by Day] Keats' House at Wentworth Place, Hampstead

      - A superb, finely executed small watercolor painting by F. Holland Day, noted bookman, publisher, artist and co-founder of Copeland and Day in Boston of Keats' House at Wentworth Place in Hampstead. 5 1/2 x 4" on watercolor paper. Executed most likely ca. 1880's-1890's, when Day had his large Keats collection. Captioned in white box with white lettering lower right, with "Hampstead" mispelled as "Hamstead," a typical error by Day, who was not known for spelling. From the collection of Tom Boss, noted Day collector and expert, and before that, directly from the Joe Kraus collection, bibliographer of Copeland and Day. Fine condition. A wonderful piece of Keatsiana, especially considering Day's fascination with Keats.

         Nineteenth-Century American Kindergarten Embroidery Album

[United States] 1880 - Nineteenth-century American embroidery album, featuring scores of colorful patterns and figures executed on cardstock. In the 1830s, German educator Friedrich Froebel developed his original "system of kindergarten," a revolutionary program for children that emphasized spatial literacy and graphic design. The "Froebel gifts" were a series of twenty interactive toys, including building blocks, origami papers, modeling clay, and embroidered cards like the ones collected in this album. Milton Bradley & Company, which offered the toys for sale in the United States, featured embroidery kits as "the twelfth gift" in their 1873-1874 catalog: "The embroidering is done with needles and colored silks and worsted on paper. . . . the pupils produce, in course of time, the most beautiful representations of natural and artificial objects -- mute, eloquent tokens of an early acquired taste in regard to form and color, and of manual dexterity and skill rarely witnessed in children of such tender age." The format of this unsigned and undated album corresponds directly to surviving nineteenth-century American examples, such as Philadelphia kindergarten teacher Lettie Allen's 1880 embroidery album (Institute for Figuring, Los Angeles). Frobel's emphasis on line, form, and pattern as basic elements of thought anticipated the modernist turn to abstraction: "With their pages of multicolored 'letters' forming words in no known tongue, the books passed down through the families of nineteenth-century kindergarteners are like mysterious Bibles" (Inventing Kindergarten, 76). A near-fine survival. Oblong concertina album, measuring 9.5 x 11.25 inches, 16 panels. Original black textured cloth ruled in blind, titled "Sewing" in gilt to upper board, black ribbon ties. 64 embroidery patterns and figures worked in colored thread on ivory cards, each card measuring 3.75 x 4.5 inches, mounted four cards to a panel. Light shelfwear to album, ribbon ties frayed, crease to edge of panel 15 (not affecting sewing). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Series of Picturesque Seats of the noblemen and gentlemen of Great Britain and Ireland. With descriptive and historical letterpress.

London: William Mackenzie, [1880] - Quarto, 6 volumes. Publisher's full red morocco, extra gilt on spine and boards, raised bands, marbled endpapers, roll to turn-ins, gilt edges. Some occasional light foxing, an unusually bright set in excellent condition. Coloured woodblock vignette title pages, 240 coloured woodblock plates (heightened with gum arabic) by Alexander Francis Lydon, printed by Benjamin Fawcett. First edition in book form; "the book's publishing history is complicated. It is described as having been issued in parts between 1864 and 1880, but selections from it like The Ancestral Homes of Britain of 1868 also appeared during this period" (Ray). Morris's Seats offers an unparalleled survey of British and Irish country houses in their late Victorian heyday, Lydon's superbly detailed and carefully composed plates - projecting an image of supremely placid and untroubled estates - were printed with considerable subtlety by Benjamin Fawcett, "the leading provincial colour printer of the age" (ibid).

In Zululand with the British Throughout the War of 1879.

London: W. H. Allen & Co., 1880 - Octavo. Original diagonal-ribbed green cloth, title gilt to spine, decorative friezes in gilt to head and foot, extending over boards in blind, gilt block of three assegais to front, brown coated endpapers. Extremities very lightly bumped, a few short nicks to spine-ends, inner hinges very slightly tender, foxing to frontispiece, title page, the mount of the Frere portrait and facing leaf, and the folding map, short closed tear to map stub and one fold partially split. A very good copy. Tinted photogravure portrait frontispiece of Chelmsford, one similar plate, mounted photograph of Sir Bartle Frere, wood-engraved portrait of Cetywayo (Mendelssohn: "very dissimilar to the majority of other delineations of the Zulu king"), 8 folding plans, large folding military map to rear. First edition of this "especially vivid and insightful" eyewitness account (Raugh). The author was "well acquainted with the country and had a good knowledge of the natives and their language and customs" (Mendelssohn). He was the only correspondent in the country at the outbreak of hostilities and immediately immersed himself in the action: "With the Central Column rode Charles L. Norris-Newman, a retired Army Captain, known to his close friends as 'Noggs'. In the tradition of keen special correspondents, Norris-Newman was the first white man to splash across the river and set foot in Zululand. He represented the Natal Times and the London Standard and had attached himself to the staff of Commandant Lonsdale of the Natal Native Contingent and sported their badge, a twisted piece of red cloth tucked in the loose muslin band that encircled his sun helmet" (Wilkinson-Latham, cited after Roth and Olson, Historical Dictionary of War Journalism, pp. 220-1). The appendices include the list of officers and men killed at Isandhlwana, the official report of the defence of Rorke's Drift, and the proceedings of the court martial on Lieutenant Cary in connection with the death of the Prince Imperial. Mendelssohn II p. 98; Raugh 148. [Attributes: First Edition]

         Confidence.

London: Chatto and Windus, 1880 [1879].. FIRST UK EDITION, preceding the first US edition. In two volumes. Octavo, pp.[2] 309 [1]; pp.[2] 253 [1]. Missing half-titles and publisher's catalogue. In recent tan half calf with raised bands, gilt titles to contrasting red and green labels to spines, and marbled boards. Edges untrimmed. Very light spotting to title pages; very good overall. First appearing in serial form in 'Scribner's Monthly' between August 1879 and January 1880, James published a small run of 500 copies in London in December 1879 in order to secure the UK copyright. This makes the UK edition both extremely rare, and the true first edition in book form.

On the forms of logical proposition.

1880 - Williams and Norgate. 1880. 8vo. Contemporary khaki cloth, gilt lettering to spine; pp. viii + 592 (Venn pp. 336 - 349); small paper library labels to spine, very good. Provenance: donation bookplate of Edward Seymer Thompson to Christ's College Cambridge to front pastedown, with college library inkstamp to title page and blindstamps to prelims, deaccession inkstamp to ffep. Thompson was a college lecturer in law who was known for his translation of Plato's Meno. Joint first edition of the announcement of the creation of the Venn diagram, in Mind, a quarterly review of psychology and philosophy, vol V, 1880. Published at the same time in the Philosophical Magazine as "On the diagrammatic and mechanical representation of propositions and reasonings". There is controversy over which is the true first edition, as each appeared in the July edition of its respective journal. John Venn (1834-1923) was an Anglican priest and mathematician who turned to serious maths having invented a cricket ball bowling machine of alarming accuracy. While working in Cambridge as a lecturer in logic and probability, he was drawn to the representation of logical propositions in overlapping circles, it seeming a natural approach to him. "The uses of these kinds of diagrams in logic were used before Venn - for example, by mathematician Gottfried Leibniz and Leonhard Euler - but Venn was the first to comprehensively study them and formalize and generalize their usage" (Pickover, The Math Book, 272). His diagrams have now become widely used in all areas of statistics, probability, logic and computer science. This volume of Mind also includes papers by Francis Galton on "Statistics of Mental Imagery", Watson on Kant and two authors on Herbert Spencer's ethics. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Mexico Pintoresco Artistico y Monumental. Vistas, descripcion, anecdotas y episodios de los lugares mas notables de la capital y de los estados, aun de las poblaciones cortas, pero de importancia geografica o historica . las descripciones contienen datos cientificos historicos y estadisticos.

Imprenta de la Reforma 1880 / 82 83, Mexico City - Three volumes, large quartos, pp xxxv, 515, 78, and with 67 plates; frontis., vi, 534, 7, and 70 plates; 576 (of 633), with 56 plates (of 68). Total number of plates is 193, all full-page, hors-du-texte. The first two volumes deal with Mexico City and its environs; vol. 3 deals with the rest of the country. The lithograph plates in these volumes are of very high quality, on especially thin paper used to enhance the imprint, showing everything of interest in the city at the time, along with descriptive and historical text by the author. The plates as well as the text are of great value in documenting the architectural scene in Mexico, esp. the capitol. (Even included are views of the new streetcar system that had been recently installed.) The lithographs were done by L. Garces and executed by the firm of Murguia. Mathes in his book on Mexican lithography, Mexico on Stone, pp. 41-44, calls the set: "The most important album of Mexican views of the century". Reprinted in the 1970's in a deluxe and very limited edition, the original set is extremely scarce on the market -- no complete sets have apparently ever come up at auction; OCLC notes only 6 library holdings, but with no indication of the completeness of the volumes. (Palau 270223/4) The volumes are bound in red cloth over marbled boards. Aside from the defect noted in vol. iii, very good copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

In Zululand with the British Throughout the War of 1879.

London: W. H. Allen & Co., , 1880. Octavo. Original diagonal-ribbed green cloth, title gilt to spine, decorative friezes in gilt to head and foot, extending over boards in blind, gilt block of three assegais to front, brown coated endpapers. Extremities very lightly bumped, a few short nicks to spine-ends, inner hinges very slightly tender, foxing to frontispiece, title page, the mount of the Frere portrait and facing leaf, and the folding map, short closed tear to map stub and one fold partially split. A very good copy.

Marc, Franz] Bookplate by Franz Marc for Himself

      - Early graphic work by Franz Marc (February 8, 1880 – March 4, 1916) noted German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of the German Expressionist movement. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it. A strikingly Art Nouveau image, on white handmade paper, in 1904 (image size slightly less than 3 x 3 inches). still quite objective and arrested in Art Nouveau. On verso of bookplate is the printer stamp, SH. This comes from the estate of a printer of the Steglitzer Werkstatte, where Marc had at least this (and the example following) ex-libris bookplate printed. The printer was founded in 1900 by Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke, Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens and Georg Belwe. Fine. Most scarce.

The Power of Movement in Plants

London: John Murray,, 1880. With illustrations. Second Thousand. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt and with gilt decorative border at ends, covers blindstamped, brown coated endpapers. With the publisher's 32-page catalogue, dated January 1882, to the rear. With 196 woodcuts in the text. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Minor rubbing to extremities, crease in cloth to front cover, tiny mark to rear cover, edges lightly soiled, short scratch to front pastedown; a very good, largely unopened copy, with a couple of gatherings to the rear clumsily opened. First edition, second issue, released in the same year as the first issue. The collaborative authorship proclaimed on the title page reflects Darwin's concern to introduce his children into the world of science. Francis Darwin had trained as a doctor but turned from medicine to botany, initially working as secretary and assistant to his father. In 1876 he had been for some months at the University of Würzburg, learning laboratory methods from Julius Sachs. "The book was an extension of Charles Darwin's work on climbing plants and it showed that the same mechanisms can be observed in plants in general. By extending the idea of irregular circumnutation the Darwins analysed the growth movement of plants in response to factors of the environment such as light, gravity, and wounds. In addition, they demonstrated that the mechanism of curvature in both roots and shoots was the result of differential growth rates. They could also confirm that the effect of the stimuli on the growth movement was indirect and that light and gravity act on some substance in the tip of the root and the shoot, which is transmitted to other parts of the plant. Francis Darwin later refined some of the experimental techniques and modified their theoretical conclusions" (ODNB).
