Historia da America Portugueza, desde o anno de mil e quinhentos do seu descobrimento até o de mil e setecentos e vinte e quatro .

Lisbon, Francisco Arthur da Silva, 1880. - Large 8°, contemporary red half sheep over dark green pebbled cloth (minor wear), spine gilt in five compartments, raised bands, marbled endleaves, original green on yellow printed wrappers bound in (small repair at outer margin of front wrapper; tiny repair at outer margin of rear wrapper), edges sprinkled. Title in red and black with publisher's monogram. Six lithograph plates. Double-page engraved map of Brazil. Overall in fine condition. xxviii, 404 pp., 6 plates and 1 double-page map. *** Third edition but First Illustrated Edition of the first general history of Brazil, which was first published in Lisbon, 1730, and again at Bahia, 1878. This edition is described in error on the front wrapper and the title-page as the second. It was revised and annotated by J.G. Goes. The illustrations depict landfall in 1500, the city of Salvador, Bahia, the death of Padre Ignacio d'Azevedo, João Fernandes Vieira, panning for gold, and Rio de Janeiro. There is also a double-page map of Brazil.Burns describes Rocha Pitta as "one of the foremost eighteenth-century historians" (Perspectives on Brazilian History p. 16), although Rocha Pitta is often condemned for his florid and ornate language, and for not using primary sources. Southey's harsh assessment has been widely quoted: "The only general history of Brazil is . . . a meagre and inaccurate work, which has been accounted valuable merely because there was no other" (Preface to the History of Brazil, London 1810-19). On the other hand, Southey testified to the importance of Rocha Pitta's Historia by numerous citations of it throughout his own work. And while Southey rejected Rocha Pitta's methodology, the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico (established 1839) respected and sometimes adhered to it. The Historia is an important source on the history of Minas Geraes (where gold, diamonds and emeralds were all discovered during his lifetime), on the "Guerra dos Emboabas," 1708-1711, between Paulistas and recent immigrants from Portugal and coastal Brazil, and on the "Guerra dos Macates," 1709-1711, between the sugar-planters in Olinda and the new bourgeoisie in Recife.Rocha Pitta (1660-1738), a native of Bahia, traveled to Coimbra to take his degree, then spent most of the rest of his life on his family's plantation in Brazil.*** Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 678.          [Photo Album]: European Travels

, 1880. 1880. Near Fine. Oblong folio. Full brown leathers with the words "album of photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. 11" x 14". A collection of 65 sepia toned albumen photographs some include captions and photographer information in the plate. The photos vary in size with most of them measuring 8.25" x 10.5" or 6" x 10". Very good with modestly worn edges and some foxing on the pages. An assemblage of photographs from roughly 1880 beginning in Paris with detailed exterior and interior photographs of La Sainte-Chapelle and the Hotel de Ville. The album continues through Belgium, Nuremberg, Switzerland, Prague, England, and Milan among others, displaying some of the most impressive attractions and architecture of each country or city. Some of these include La Fleche de la Cathedrale in Strasbourg which was the tallest building in the world until 1874; Lausanne Cathedral of Switzerland; and The Frauenkirche Church in Nuremberg. Towards the middle of the book are scenes of locals, one of a dark skinned gondolier, uncaptioned but presumably in Venice, a boy and an older woman sitting in an ally in San Remo, and priests sitting by a well on the grounds of the Carthusian monastery in Florence. Photo credits include the Italian photographer, Edizioni Brogi, A. Wimmer, and the German photographer Giorgio Sommer. The album is full of beautiful European landscapes and views of numerous churches, abbeys, and castles throughout the continent. A lovely assortment of late Victorian photography.

Treasures of the Snow. Eight Flowers from the Arctic Regions Collected during Swedish Polar expeditions. Painted by Ebba de Ramsay [so titled to box].

Hamburg: Gebr. Lüdeking, n.d. c. 1880s - 8vo. pp. [2, explanatory text] plus 8 chromolithographed plants, each captioned with Linnaean title, place and dated found, name of expedition leader, and with a verse from the Bible at foot; loosely contained in the original box with attractively chromolithographed lid showing Eskimos and ships in an Arctic setting, vignettes of kayaker and polar bear hunt, two sides of the box lacking and the box now laying flat, gift inscription to bottom of box. This set of illustrations depicts plants painted after dried specimens collected on voyages by Nordenskiöld, Fries and Malmgren, mostly on Spitsbergen from 1858 to 1868. According to the printed sheet that accompanies the plates, “The profits of the work are to be given to the Mission, carried on at Wilhelmsro near Jönköping in Sweden”; this was the home for disabled children founded by Ebba Ramsay in 1874, and which later became the first Swedish institution for children with epilepsy. The box of illustrations was published to raise funds for the home, and the sheet suggests that it was published also in Germany and England (by Partridge and Co.). [Attributes: First Edition]

         Louisa May Alcott Manuscript Leaf.

Autograph manuscript page from Louisa May Alcott's Jack and Jill, Chapter VIII, page 129. One page. The manuscript page reads, "up no capers with that child! The idea of a hot bath in the middle of the day, and him full of dinner, and croupy into the bargain! Wet a corner of a towel at the kettle-spout and polish him off if you like, but you won't risk his life in no bath-tubs this cold day.' Miss Bat's word was law in some things, so Molly had to submit, and took Boo away, saying, loftily, as she left the room, 'I shall ask father, and do it tonight, for I will not have my brother look like a pig.' 'My patience! How the Siamese do leave their things around,'she exclaimed [crossed out a moment after'] as she surveyed her room after making up the fire and polishing off Boo. 'I'll put things in order, and then mend up my rags, if I can find my thimble. Now, let me see,' and she went to exploring her closet, bureau, and table, finding such disorder everywhere that her courage nearly gave out. She had clothes enough, but all needed care; even her best dress had two buttons off, and her drawers were a perfect chaos of soiled ruffles, off gloves, old ribbons, boot lacings, and bits of paper. 'Oh, my heart, what a muddle! Mrs. Minot wouldn't think much of me if she could see that,' said Molly, recalling [crossed out 'that Mrs.'] how that lady once said she could judge a good deal of a little girl's character & habits by a peep at her top drawer, & went on to guess how each of the schoolmates kept hers, with great success." The final printing reads slightly differently. Matted and framed opposite a photograph of Alcott. The entire piece measures 17.5 inches by 20 inches. Manuscript pages from Alcott seldom enter the market. Jack and Jill: A Village Story was originally published in 1880. The story takes place in a small New England town after the Civil War where Jack Minot and Janey Pecq are best friends and next door neighbors. Always seen together, Janey gets the nickname of Jill, to mimic the old rhyme. The two go up a hill one winter day, and then suffer a terrible accident. Seriously injured in a sledding accident, they recover from their physical injuries, while learning life lessons along with their many friends. They are helped along their journey to recovery by various activities created by their mothers.

Carta Geologica del versante settentrionale dell'Appennino compreso fra i fiumi Montone e Foglia

Report and Journal of Examination of the Country North-East of Eucla

[Adelaide, Government Printer], 1880. Foolscap folio, 9 pages plus a large folding map ('Plan shewing Country north east of Eucla examined by Mr James W. Jones with the view to decide upon boring operations for water', 555 x 705 mm). Drop-title, sewn as issued; bottom corner of the front page slightly dusty; small blank corner piece of the map slightly creased; an excellent copy. The map embraces the entire extent of the Nullarbor Plain within South Australia covering 'an area of 16,500 square miles ... [with] a complete description of the country from the coast to the route taken by Mr Ernest Giles on his exploration trip to Perth'. It also includes 'Professor Tate's track shewn in red' (presumably relating to Ralph Tate's travels there resulting in his lengthy paper, 'The Natural History of the Country around the Head of the Great Australian Bight' in the Transactions ... of the Philosophical Society of Adelaide, South Australia for 1878-9: see McLaren 15803). The journal 'gives a minutely detailed description of the country passed over ... It will be seen that this hitherto comparatively unexplored country has been thoroughly examined. I found that in many important particulars the surmises in previous reports respecting this country were not borne out'. No less interesting is the account of the discovery of the waggon and last campsite of Fairie and Woolley, who died of thirst north of Eucla two years earlier. South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 191 of 1880; the quantity printed is not stated, but around 700 copies was usual (and this item is rarely encountered on the open market). McLaren 10540.

Leaves from a Journal being a Record of the Visit of the Emperor and Empress of the French to the Queen and of a Visit of the queen and H.R.H. The Prince Consort to the Emperor of the French.

London: Printed Strictly for Private Circulation,, 1880. Octavo. Original blue sand-grained cloth over bevelled boards, title gilt to the spine, and to the upper board, gilt double fillet panel to both boards, black surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed, corners bumped, head and tail of spine crumpled, front board creased with consequent crack to the front pastedown, pale toning else very good. Small quantity of relevant clippings loosely inserted. First edition, extremely uncommon, Copac lists Oxford University only, and OCLC locates a single copy at the Australian National University. This copy inscribed by Victoria on the half-title; "To The Earl Cowley, In recollection of happy past days, from Victoria R.I., Nov. 21 1881". The Crimean War had "transformed Napoleon III into Britain's closest ally. An imperial visit to Britain in May 1855 convinced Victoria of the emperor's qualities; Empress Eugénie too met with her approbation, for Victoria admired beauty in other women. Victoria paid a reciprocal visit in August to her ally in Paris, where she was 'delighted, enchanted, amused and interested, and think I never saw anything more beautiful and gay than Paris', and paid a visit of respect to the tomb of the first Napoleon. The visit sealed the alliance …" (ODNB). The recipient, Henry Richard Charles Wellesley (1804-84), became ambassador to France in 1852, and was instrumental in fostering Anglo-French relations during the period; "Cowley was close to Napoleon by the time the Crimean War broke out. 'I am not generally of a confiding character in regard to foreigners', he wrote a little later, 'but there is something about that man that always imbues me with a feeling of his sincerity'". A superb association copy of a genuinely scarce book.
