1881. London 1881-1911. 7 volumes bound in 18. 4to (305 x 245mm). pp. x, 316; xv, 824; xii, 717; xii, 432; xv, 690; xii, 372; xxxiv, 572; x, 494; vi, 354; vii, 750; vii, 513; (6), 396; vi, 221; xii, 525; xx, 625; (4), 374; xii, 276; x, 249, with 350 lithographed plates. Publisher's blue cloth, gilt lettered spines. The complete coleoptera section of this highly important work on the fauna and flora of Central America. 'The best example of an entomologist who devoted his main efforts to the study of exotic faunas was H.W. Bates (1825-1892). In his early career he spent more than ten years in South America, partly in company with the famous A.R. Wallace; he was a great general biologist, the first to discover the form of mimicry in butterflies that afterwards was named after him. He worked on different insect groups, with his first paper published in 1843. After 1870 he almost exclusively turned to Coleoptera and may be termed the father of coleopterology not only for tropical America, as manifested by his volumes on Carabidae, Longicornia, and Lamellicornia in Godman & Salvin's 'Biologia Centrali-Americana' (Smith, R.T., History of Entomology p. 145). The whole work was published in 215 parts in 63 volumes from 1875-1915. It was 'the most thorough study of the animals, plants, and human beings of Central America ever attempted' (Nature in the New World p. 187). The zoological section described 38,637 animals, approximately half as new species and half as new genera. A very fine copy. B.M. (Nat. Hist) VI, p. 380..

With the University Press: John Wilson and Son on the copyright page. A very bright copy. "To the legal historian, Justice Holmes was to be the leading prophet of the new era. Holmes was part of the generation that had sat at the feet of Darwin and Spencer… When Holmes asserted in his Common Law that 'the law finds its philosophy (in) the nature of human needs,' he was sounding the clarion of 20th-century jurisprudence… If the 19th century was one of Legal Darwinism, the 20th was, ultimately, to be that of Mr. Justice Holmes" (The Law in America, 190-91).

Handbook of the Bombay Presidency. With an Account of Bombay City

London: John Murray,, 1881. Second Edition. Most Carefully Revised on the Spot, and for the Most Part Rewritten. Octavo. Original red combed cloth, title in gilt to the spine and the upper board, blind panelling to both boards, edges sprinkled red, grey advertising endpapers. 4 folding maps, the general map of the presidency in an end-pocket. 50 pages of advertisements dated 1888-9 at the rear, and 4 pages of advertisements for Stanfords after the half-title. Lightly monsooned, boards a little mottled, the cloth a touch cockled, spine sunned, very minor damping to the front endpapers and just touching the exterior of the map in the pocket, contemporary pencilled ownership inscription to the half-title, and notes to the verso of the front free endpaper, text-block clean and sound, overall remains a very good copy. First edition, Murray published A Handbook for India, comprising separate volumes on Madras and Bombay in 1859, this "Second Edition" was "so completely re-written that it might fairly be called a new book" (Preface). This an uncommon book, COPAC listing just 6 copies. The text was originally written by the diplomat and orientalist E.B. Eastwick, whose family had "a long history of service with the East India Company" (ODNB). Ill health forced Eastwick to leave India for employment at the East India College at Haileybury. He was subsequently appointed a Political Assistant at the India Office, and accompanied a number of diplomatic missions overseas. In his retirement "he devoted himself to literary work … [writing] several interesting handbooks on various cities of India" and making translations of Sa'di's Gulistan (The Rose Garden) and Kashifi's Anvar-i Suhaili (The Light of Canopus). He died in 1883. Rarely encountered complete, and desirable thus.

        EARLY SPRING IN MASSACHUSETTS

1881. Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1881. Original dark green cloth with facsimile signature in gilt, beveled. First Edition of the first of Thoreau's "four seasons," edited from his journal by H.G.O. Blake (this is the only one of the four in which Blake is unnamed). The other three seasons would be published over the next eleven years (curiously not quite in order): SUMMER in 1884, WINTER in 1888, and AUTUMN in 1892. The first edition of EARLY SPRING consisted of only 1018 copies -- fewer than any of Thoreau's books except his first one, A WEEK ON THE CONCORD AND MERRIMACK RIVERS, which consisted of 1000 copies.~This is an unusually bright copy, near-fine with some light soil on the (blank) rear cover. Bookplate of Henry Hornblower. Borst A8.1.a; Blanck 20123.

To the Central African Lakes & Back

London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1881. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Joseph Thomson (1858-1895) was a Scottish geologist and explorer who played a role in the European Race for Africa. Thomson's Gazelle is named for him. In 1878 Thomson was appointed geologist and naturalist to Alexander Keigh Johnston's Royal Geographical Society expedition to establish a route from Dar es Salaam to Lake Nyasa and Lake Tanganyika. Johnston died early in the journey and Thomson assumed leadership. This two-volume work is very good overall in the striking, original, and unrestored decorated cloth bindings. The bindings are very good with only light wear, nicely rounded spines, and excellent shelf appearance. The only significant binding appearance issue to note is a rectangular section of moderate fading to the lower third of both front covers. The contents are clean and crisp with age-toning at the untrimmed page edges. No spotting. All illustrations and maps are intact. Previous ownership marks are limited to a discreet private lending library ink stamp on the blank title page verso. The structural flaws in the sets are gutterbreaks - a break at page 48 of Volume I with the binding cords still holding and a front hinge break at the Vol. II pastedown with the mull still intact. From the Preface: "I, who had been selected only as an assistant, found myself unexpectedly in a position of difficulty and responsibility which I felt myself far from being competent to fill. But I remembered I was the countryman of Livingstone, and my Scottish blood would not allow me to retreat till I had performed my duty to the best of my ability." Thomson successfully led the expedition over 3000 miles in 14 months. His explorations and observations are recorded in this book. The Royal Geographic Society continued to support his explorations and a later expedition and subsequent book by Thomson, Through Masai Land, become a bestseller.

STRATFORD SHAKSPERE [Histories, Comedies, Tragedies of William Shakespeare] Edited by Charles Knight

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1881. 6 volumes. A handome early set of Knight’s important edition. With an engraved plate for each play. 8vo, handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards, the spines richly gilt decorated in compartments between gilt stippled bands, two compartments with contrasting dark brown and dark green morocco labels lettered and decorated in gilt, endleaves and all edges marbled. An fine and handsome set, internally fresh and clean with no foxing or spotting whatsoever, text firm and appearing unread, the binding sturdy and very attractive with fine hinges and only the most minor of evidence of shelving at the tips and edges, uncommonly fresh and well preserved. A FINE EARLY SET OF KNIGHT’S IMPORTANT EDITION. It contains Knight’s excellent “Life of Shakspere”, notes on various readings and glossery. The vignette style engravings for each play are a delightful addition as well. "The text given by Mr. Knight... is founded upon the most careful collations; and a reason is assigned in those editions for every deviation from the received text of the modern copies. To print the Text of the Words of Shakespeare, such as we may judge that it proceeded from his pen, so as to make his real words accessible to all, is the object...”
